Software :: Pubsub And Feeds Folders In User Library?

Dec 5, 2009

In user/library/pubsub/feeds: the Feeds folder contains a gazillion items and I am not sure what they are. I am also not clear on the definition of the pubsub folder and what feeds are. Is it some sort of cache that I can get rid of on a routine basis? I am one to keep things clean and know that SL does a lot of its own maintenance and I don't mess with the system or system library folders. Just at times in my user folder, only when I know exactly what I am doing.

OS X :: Creating New User Folders For Every Log In

Jul 11, 2010

I was having the low memory available error so I deleted all unused programs ( garage band etc) I moved pics on a flash drive then deleted them ( and emptied the trash) (but whats odd is I put 6+ GB on the flash drive but only recovered 2-3 GB ?) anyway I was looking to see where all my space is and I found the users folder that has a lot of folders that look like archives of my disk, the newest one has my recent desktop and photos etc, why are these here? they take up to 14 to 35 GB each! can I delete them? they have all the pics and movies I thought I deleted ( as well as garage ban app) so when I look at the info section they all say they where created on the same day- march 18th which is the day I stupidly re-named by home, I eventually put the old name back and copied the created archive back in home and I thought all was well. since then the only thing I have noticed is a slow start up ( after log in password. Is it looking for the folder that takes so long? I have file vault turned on. sorry this is long and confusing, I am new to this type of thing- I am off warranty also

here is pic of the user folders listed ( at the bottom that can't be seen is my home folder): [URL]

OS X :: Won't Unlock Folders / After Transfer One User Name To Another

Sep 20, 2010

So I have two user names on my iMac, and tried to transfer my iTunes library over from one user name to the main user account. I transfered it over, but now tons of folders and files are locked. I can manually go in and unlock them, but I want to be able to just unlock everything.

How can you easily unlock the entire contents of a folder, and all the sub-folders within that?

OS X :: User - Specific Application Folders

Oct 31, 2010

I want to separate the application folders of both myself and my girlfriend using the same Mac. She doesn't need to see my system tweaking tools and DVD conversion software, and likewise, I don't need to see her BlackBerry Desktop software and Facebook album tools. Currently, all apps reside in HD/Applications, as is default. My question is: is it safe to simply copy all applications into HD/User/USERNAME/Applications, or is this going to cause problems will existing file structures?

OS X :: How To Disable User Access To Folders

Nov 14, 2009

I am currently setting up a few iMacs for my computer lab.

I use the Parental Controls to freeze the dock and to restrict the use of applications to only specific ones, and it's all working great.

It would just be great to have a way to restrict access to the "Library" folder in the "User" folder, as well as the "Developer", "Library", and "System" folders at the "Macintosh HD" level. I know using the permissions is not possible, and all the monitoring apps I've seen only enable you to restore the account and see what's been done and moved around.

So I am looking for a way to disable user access to those folders, so that when they try to open them they get a message saying they can't access it, just like in the windows-based computer labs.

OS X :: How To Change Ownership Of All Files And Folders Under Another User?

Mar 8, 2010

Not too long ago I went through a process of changing my user in OS X to another name. It seemed to go smoothly enough. However many of my old applications are owned by an "_unknown" now. This is fine and dandy, except that every time I go to rename or move something in these places, it either has to authenticate or just tells me I'm not allowed.

What would be a simple, effective way to change ownership on all files/folders tied to "_unknown" to my current user?

OS X :: Connecting And Syncing Folders Between User Accounts?

Jul 27, 2010

I have recently returned to the Mac fold after a long absence wandering in the pc desert and have just purchased a 21.5 inch iMac. In setting it up I have created two user accounts, one for myself and one for my wife. I am attempting to set it up so that folders such as pictures, music, downloads, etc. can be accessed by both of us. I'm also hoping that there is a way to make it so that if I upload photos to my iPhoto library they are also synced to her iPhoto library. Is this possible or a pipe dream?

Mac OS X Lion Server :: Set SSH User-permissions Only To Specific Folders?

Mar 17, 2012

I'm aware of how enabling sFTP support in Lion Server by enabling SSH access in the Hardware settings.

Now, if I do log in using sFTP in Transmit client Software with a normal user account who should be able to access via SSH but got only permissions for the "Public" folder on the Server, that user via SSH/sFTP can see/access the root Directory of the server anyway!

how to set specific folder permissions to users using the enabled SSH/sFTP option?

OS X :: What Is Difference Between Library Folders

Jul 30, 2009

I've been wondering, what is the difference between ~/Library (i.e. the home-folder's Library), /Library (contained in the root) and /System/Library (contained in the System folder)?

I've been installing a couple of plugins for QuickLook and whatnot and I'm always confused as to which Library to use. They all for example have a folder called -/QuickLook. And installing the plugin works in all of them. I know if I put it into ~/Library it will only be available for me, but what would be the difference in placing them in /Library or /System/Library?

OS X Server V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Manage Local User Home Folders?

Apr 27, 2012

We are using Mac OS X 10.6.8 in a classroom. Hard drive has two partitions, one for OS and apps, the other for student's files. Computers are bind to the Active Directory. Unfortunately, local home folders are on the boot parition. Over a time when apps FCP and Avid are frequently used, the boot partition gets filled with files and finally it's full. With zero kb available, users cannot even login anymore. Manually deleting files by admin is cumbersome and time-consuming task.

I'm looking for a way to keep /Users folder clean. Putting user's home folders to server is not an option, because of latency issues etc. Unfortunately the local home folder is the default saving place when user issues the Save As command. I've tried to tinker with the User Template to lock the Documents folder but apps like Microsoft Word and Final Cut Pro go crazy when they cannot save there. Forwarding /Users to other partition does not solve the problem, it just moves the problem to another place. Logout Hook to automatically purging the files could be an solution, but there's always one hapless soul who saves his or hers files to wrong place and loses them. Or maybe a script which looks at the modfication date and deletes old files.

OS X :: Lots Of Dupes In The Folders Of Itunes Library

Jan 11, 2011

Recently my buddy's macbook pro died. When we realized it was on it's way out, we moved his itunes library to an external hard drive. We had to consolidate it a couple times to get everything. We setup his new macbook pro to look at the external drive for his itunes library.

However, the new macbook pro is still storing music files locally (the external drive is always plugged in). I did a consolidation last night and noticed something weird. It's not jsut looking for the files that arent in the itunes library on the external drive and adding them, it is making full copies of the itunes libraries on the external drive. So, that means that my buddy has about 4 of each song in his itunes library folders (only one copy of the song shows up in itunes itself). So his Dave Matthews folder will show the album Crash as it's own folder, but within that folder there will be four copies of each song that is on the album.

OS X :: Looking For Program That Can Search With In System And Library Folders.??

Sep 4, 2009

I installed a scanner driver (Musteck A3 600 USb scanner) and found it so dame useless and frustrating that I went out and bought an epson 10000XL scanner (even sharper than my V700). which has a very good driver (I use silverfast for my Epson V700)

but this dam musteck driver still shows up in Photoshops Input list. (there was no uninstaller on the mustek disk. and it is one of the most useless things I have ever bought)

if i take the Twain plug in out of the Photoshop plugin inputs folder, the the Epson Scan is no longer on the input list..

I have tried looking for where this bloody scanner driver is to remove it but cant find it.

is there any search program that will actually look inside the system and library folders to find files.

OS X :: Read Only Permissions On System And Library Folders

Sep 16, 2009

I'm running 10.5.8 of OSX and have some strange permissions problems. These have been around for a while and whilst they aren't so bad that I can't live with them, they're really annoying and I want to install Snow Leopard but would like to fix this first. When I go to a lot of the folders in the upper hierarchy of the OSX install (the likes of System and Library), I can't modify the contents of any of these folders even as admin.

I have checked the Get Info and seen that it says that "You can only read" under Sharing and Permissions. Surely as admin I should be able to have read and write. I have attached a pic of a screenshot of the Get Info for my System folder. How am I now not a member of the "System" group (I am sure that I haven't had these issues the whole time I have had Leopard...only in the last 6 months) and what is the "Wheel" group?

Applications :: Is It Possible To Rearrange The Folders In The IPhoto Library

Dec 28, 2009

I have been handling my family's photos for some time now, using iPhoto on my mac. Now I am about to buy a ReadyNas. I want to store the iPhoto library there and give the rest of the family access to it. The problem is that I am the only mac-user, all the others have windows.

The plan is that they will use Picasa when reading from the iPhoto library. There is a problem though. I am afraid that it will be all messy since iPhoto stores both modified pictures and the originals. I addition to this the subfolders to these main folders have got inconsistent names since the photos were taken before I started using iPhoto. The result will be that the person using Picasa will see tons of folders with just a few pictures in them.

ITunes :: Use One Library.itl File For Two Different Media Folders?

May 20, 2012

Can one itunes library.itl file be used for music in two different itunes media files? I have an Air. Want to have music in MP3 format on the Air and the same music in Lossless format on a large external HD. Would like same playlists etc for both types. Lossless takes up too much room on the Air but for playing tunes on the road, MP3 is fine. Want to keep same music as Lossless for archiving and for playing on very good speakers at times; would be kept on the external HD. Would like to have the same playlists, ratings, etc., for music that is in both MP3 and Lossless format. For example, rating Dylan's Blood on the Tracks album as a 5 for both the tracks that are in MP3 format (that live on the Air) and the same tracks in Lossless format (that reside on the external HD). I realize I could have separate iTunes folders on the Air and the Ext HD but then would have to duplicate all the data on playlists, ratings, etc. for the two independent iTunes folders.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: What Is User's Library/caches Used For

Feb 20, 2012

It appears to not to be backed up by Time Machine - which can not show anything earlier than the latest version. It contains items that suggest that it is regularly used by Apple software (e.g., Safari - for bookmarks?)It appears to be used by some manufacturers (e.g., Garmin) for device software updates - including a very large one that used 2.3 GB and stayed there after the Garmin map update was installed.  (I was running low on hard drive space, so I took a deep breath and deleted that 2.3 GB file)What negative consequences could occur from deleting items from that Caches folder? (Caches may be seen in Time Machine by opening the user's "home" older in Finder, holding down the option key while clicking Go then Library, then clicking Caches, then Entering Time Machine.  After the window settles down, only the latest Caches window and one other mysterious item will remain.) I am using OS 10.7.3 on a MacBook with 1.83 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, purchased in December 2006.
