Jun 11, 2009i just got my macbook pro 4 days ago and i can't figure out why spotlight does not find my documents folder, pictures folder, or several things in my user section.

Jun 29, 2009Well, I use Spotlight religiously on a daily, hourly, maybe minute basis. I have a ton of organized folders under my Documents and when I search for any of those folders in spotlight no results are yielded. Not even if the whole folder is typed out, or even just partial. I tried typing in many different folder names I have but nothing.
Then I tried typing in spotlight the names of Pages files, Excel Files, Word, etc...you name it. But nothing.
OS X :: Ignoring Specific Folders In Spotlight?
Oct 1, 2009iPhoto has duplicated all my photo folders, so that searching for "holiday 2009" comes out with two difference results. One in the original location I put the folder, and another inside the iPhoto package.
Is there any way of hiding a particular folder or telling it to ignore anything inside iPhoto's package? So that I only end up with one result.
OS X Mavericks :: Applications Not Showing In Spotlight?
Aug 31, 2014For some reason, even though I have 'Applications' listed as number one for searching in Spotlight - they don't show up at all.
Any documents or mails about the app get lists but not the applications.Â
Interesting that even using the Alfred add-on, I can type the app name in and again don't get it in the search at all.Â
I tried rebuilding using disk utility as well as Onyx - to no success.Â

Jul 11, 2010I was having the low memory available error so I deleted all unused programs ( garage band etc) I moved pics on a flash drive then deleted them ( and emptied the trash) (but whats odd is I put 6+ GB on the flash drive but only recovered 2-3 GB ?) anyway I was looking to see where all my space is and I found the users folder that has a lot of folders that look like archives of my disk, the newest one has my recent desktop and photos etc, why are these here? they take up to 14 to 35 GB each! can I delete them? they have all the pics and movies I thought I deleted ( as well as garage ban app) so when I look at the info section they all say they where created on the same day- march 18th which is the day I stupidly re-named by home, I eventually put the old name back and copied the created archive back in home and I thought all was well. since then the only thing I have noticed is a slow start up ( after log in password. Is it looking for the folder that takes so long? I have file vault turned on. sorry this is long and confusing, I am new to this type of thing- I am off warranty also

Sep 20, 2010So I have two user names on my iMac, and tried to transfer my iTunes library over from one user name to the main user account. I transfered it over, but now tons of folders and files are locked. I can manually go in and unlock them, but I want to be able to just unlock everything.
How can you easily unlock the entire contents of a folder, and all the sub-folders within that?
OS X :: User - Specific Application Folders
Oct 31, 2010I want to separate the application folders of both myself and my girlfriend using the same Mac. She doesn't need to see my system tweaking tools and DVD conversion software, and likewise, I don't need to see her BlackBerry Desktop software and Facebook album tools. Currently, all apps reside in HD/Applications, as is default. My question is: is it safe to simply copy all applications into HD/User/USERNAME/Applications, or is this going to cause problems will existing file structures?

Nov 14, 2009I am currently setting up a few iMacs for my computer lab.
I use the Parental Controls to freeze the dock and to restrict the use of applications to only specific ones, and it's all working great.
It would just be great to have a way to restrict access to the "Library" folder in the "User" folder, as well as the "Developer", "Library", and "System" folders at the "Macintosh HD" level. I know using the permissions is not possible, and all the monitoring apps I've seen only enable you to restore the account and see what's been done and moved around.
So I am looking for a way to disable user access to those folders, so that when they try to open them they get a message saying they can't access it, just like in the windows-based computer labs.
OS X :: Newly Created Folders Showing Old Dates?
Jul 2, 2010Whenever I transfer data from my MBP HDD to an External HDD, the folder it creates to copy that data to has a created date of, wait for it.....14th February 1946 at 8:34am. And how to change it so that the dates are correct (i.e. today!) When the folder finishing copying all the dates are fine. It's just that bit in-between whilst it's copying.

Mar 8, 2010Not too long ago I went through a process of changing my user in OS X to another name. It seemed to go smoothly enough. However many of my old applications are owned by an "_unknown" now. This is fine and dandy, except that every time I go to rename or move something in these places, it either has to authenticate or just tells me I'm not allowed.
What would be a simple, effective way to change ownership on all files/folders tied to "_unknown" to my current user?

Jul 27, 2010I have recently returned to the Mac fold after a long absence wandering in the pc desert and have just purchased a 21.5 inch iMac. In setting it up I have created two user accounts, one for myself and one for my wife. I am attempting to set it up so that folders such as pictures, music, downloads, etc. can be accessed by both of us. I'm also hoping that there is a way to make it so that if I upload photos to my iPhoto library they are also synced to her iPhoto library. Is this possible or a pipe dream?

May 8, 2012Couldn't log in to iMac after there was a power outage. Well, sure enough when I inserted the factory startup disk and tried to change the password on the user account the only accounts that were available were the root and guest accounts.
I ran disk repair twice. The first time I got a message that the repair couldn't be completed. I tried again and it was successful. The odd thing is that the user account folder "m1301" seems to be there but it's not recognized as a viable user.

Mar 1, 2012I have this nagging problem for a while, all the "date modified" in most of my folders (application, documents,utility, libraries, download, etc.) are wrong. They all show up with january dates, some this year, some previous years. Recent modifications are noted as "today" and "yesterday", beyond that I get january dates. My date and hour preferences are set ok. Repaired permissions quite a few times, nothing changed. Waited for few system updates (10.7.3 - 10.7.2 - 10.7.1) hoping it would correct itself, but no.

Dec 5, 2009In user/library/pubsub/feeds: the Feeds folder contains a gazillion items and I am not sure what they are. I am also not clear on the definition of the pubsub folder and what feeds are. Is it some sort of cache that I can get rid of on a routine basis? I am one to keep things clean and know that SL does a lot of its own maintenance and I don't mess with the system or system library folders. Just at times in my user folder, only when I know exactly what I am doing.

Dec 1, 2014My original user account had a problem when upgrading to Mavericks, so that i don't have to re-install and run the risk of bring the issue back when reloading I thought that if I could et access to my pictures and files from my new user account then i could just delete that account.Â
I'm wary of upgrading to The new releases until i can sort this out.Â

Sep 17, 2010I am running a fresh install of OSX Snow Leopard, and have been trying to install some the of the fonts I was using before using Font Book. The fonts are being added successfully and validating and are enabled. They are not showing up in any of my apps however, whether that be Photoshop, or OpenOffice etc. It seems that all types of fonts have issues, Opentype, TTF, etc.

Right now all I have in Users is Admin. Barb's account is appearing in Groups, not Users. And I'm not sure if all of Kathy's data is in Barb's account.Â

A window popped up but I had alrdy clicked enter before I read it, but it said something like "...will change settings, is that okay...?" And then wi-fi still would not connect. So I tried restarting my computer, but when it turned on, my user account did not show up and all there was on the screen was two boxes that asked for name and password. I was the only person using my macbook so I never set up a password for it.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Finder Not Showing User Library Folder
Mar 25, 2012When I open Finder on my iMac, then click on my user name in the sidebar, I am not seeing the Library folder for my user name. I need to modify some of the application support folders for specific applications, but I cannot find them using Finder. These folders are specific to my user name and are not located within the Macintosh HD/Library folder for the entire computer.
They should be in the path Macintosh HD/Users/[my username]/Library/Application Support/[application name].
But for some reason, the "Library" folder doesn't even show up in Finder when I click on Macintosh HD/Users/[my username]. It's visible when I open one of the applications and use preferences to access folders in the application support folder for that application, but not when trying to get to the same location using Finder -- which I need to do in order to copy and paste some of the files.

Apr 27, 2012We are using Mac OS X 10.6.8 in a classroom. Hard drive has two partitions, one for OS and apps, the other for student's files. Computers are bind to the Active Directory. Unfortunately, local home folders are on the boot parition. Over a time when apps FCP and Avid are frequently used, the boot partition gets filled with files and finally it's full. With zero kb available, users cannot even login anymore. Manually deleting files by admin is cumbersome and time-consuming task.Â
I'm looking for a way to keep /Users folder clean. Putting user's home folders to server is not an option, because of latency issues etc. Unfortunately the local home folder is the default saving place when user issues the Save As command. I've tried to tinker with the User Template to lock the Documents folder but apps like Microsoft Word and Final Cut Pro go crazy when they cannot save there. Forwarding /Users to other partition does not solve the problem, it just moves the problem to another place. Logout Hook to automatically purging the files could be an solution, but there's always one hapless soul who saves his or hers files to wrong place and loses them. Or maybe a script which looks at the modfication date and deletes old files.Â
