Software :: Missing System Fonts - How To Restore Them
Feb 16, 2007
A couple of weeks ago I had a mess by copying fonts on /Mac HD/Library/Fonts. I Used Lynotype Font explorer to "Clean" my system folder. The problem that I have found is that it has erased (or I Have Erased) some of the files thst should be on this library/fonts folder.
Now Im getting a lot of Not found files. Doing a Spotlight search I connot find the files in My HD. Checking one by one from a list published by someone in this place I have manged to identify at least 15 without even getting to the letter D.
The question is... Is there a way to "Reintall" this fonts from the DVD's without having to reintall my whole operating system?
I recently installed a couple font management tools and ever since I have noticed that I don't have the full list of default system fonts. Below is a screenshot of what I have. I notice that there are a lot of missing fonts that should be there such as Georgia, Trebuchet, Verdana and many more. Is there a way to reinstall them or restore them? I tried the restore Standard Fonts option in Font Book but says no problems encountered. I also downloaded a program called Pacifist but don't know what to do next.
All of a sudden I restarted my computer and the dock didn't show up and the fonts for the clock and battery were different. The widgets also would not show up. Also missing was some of the icons for random programs (applications, illustrator, pictures etc.) I am thinking I might have deleted some of the systems files? In safe mode the dock and widgets work and the fonts are correct however the icons are still missing.
fonts must be messed up in Snow Leopard. Some system things display strange fonts. For example, my user name in upper right hand corner of the screen doesn't look right.ALso, the font on the "tabs," in Safari is not correct, and I can compare it to other SL computers.
I have run into after installing Snow Leopard on my machine. It is really the first complaint I have since I put the OS in on the 28th and I am just having time to sit down and toy around with it and I discovered this issue.
When I was playing around in a few Adobe applications, specifically Flash, it warned me when opening a project that I was missing a few fonts form the project and that they would be substituted.
Going into my font Library I looked for the fonts that it said were missing and confirmed that they STILL EXISTED in the folder. After double checking, I realized that a lot of my fonts were missing from the application.
After opening Word 2008, I noticed that a lot of my fonts missing from Word as well. I shut down Word and tried rebuilding the Font Cache by dragging the Word font cache file out to the desktop but Word did not rebuild it's font menu with the missing fonts.
Here's where it gets interesting. When opening an Apple application like Mail, all of my fonts that are present in the font folder show up. This is INCLUDING all of the fonts that are missing in Adobe and Word. Opening a program like Adium also shows that all of the fonts are there.
I have an extensive collection of fonts (60,0000+). Several hundred of them will crash my system when I open one of them in Finder (double-click the suitcase). I picked one at random for some serious examination. I looked at my sample with many font tools. My latest tool was FontDoctor (v5 and v7). FontDoctor reported "no problems found" with my font. Yet the crash persists. Any tool that can do a thorough job of investigating and repairing my corrupt fonts.
My user fonts suddenly don't show up in font book. I've tried all the standard fixes.- restarted in SAFE mode. - cleared the font cache- verified the disc- repaired permissions- reinstalled both font book and the user font folder from an older version in Time Machine- Verified all the fonts.
I haven't tried tossing them in another user account yet because I find the idea of having to reset up the entire user account alarming. Is there anything else I can try? These fonts all worked just days ago. Â
If I click on the fonts in the user folder they come up 'installed' and reappear. But as soon as I close and reopen fontbook they disappear again. Here's the general console readout (the short version, there is a lot more of the same.) When I download a font, I drag & drop it in to Macintosh HD - Library - Fonts. I basically want to restore the fonts in this folder to the ones that came with my Mac, so I can start from scratch, and catalogue where I get fonts from, make sure they're from a reputable source etc. So how do I do this? I thought I could restore from Time Machine, but I can't, as I imported everything across from my old iBook & the fonts were messy on there too. I tried logging in as Admin rather than my user, but they're not "original" there either. I also wondered if I could do it from the original install disk, but it looks like I'd have to reinstall the whole system, which I don't want to do! I could manually delete the ones that shouldn't be there if anyone has a list of the originals..?Â
I installed a load of new fonts, but unfortunately a lot of them were corrupt, so I had loads of crashes and hangs.I used Font Book to validate all my fonts, but when I clicked the remove button FB always crashed (due to a corrupt font, no doubt...).I tried FontDoctor, which claimed to have sorted out all my problems, but although things had improved FB still reported over 2,000 minor errors.
I have a set of fonts that I need to use for a client's logo design. When I switched over from my MBP to this newer iMac, not all of the fonts in the font book are working. I've gone to several tech blogs and inquired about the issue and have gotten good advice but none seems to be the answer to my dilemma. In the FontBook, I can see the following:Â
New Peninim Ariel Hebrew Corsiva Hebrew Raanana IsraelÂ
But, when I try to engage them in either Photoshop or Illustrator, nothing but blank boxes seems to come up.

I just purchased a 60" monitor for my mac. I have set the resolution in the System Prefs to the smallest image. I have also reduced the type on the finder but my system windows font areas are still too large. Can I reduce the fonts of the system windows, i.e. mail, left area with inbox, junk, etc?
I have been archiving old creative work by copying from a mac server network share onto my external HDD and then burning to DVD.However I am now noticing that while the font files appear to be burned they are attempting to open in terminal on the macs and have 0kb file size.Attempting to figure out why I am browsing to current jobs from the win7 machine and noticing that these also have 0kb file size. But from the mac server they appear fine.
Trouble with fonts from the "Get Go". Now fonts are disappearing in my Adobe CS5 font lists while I'm working. Noticed in my System Fonts folder some fonts I had not noticed before. Is there any way to reinstall my system fonts without reinstalling the entire system. Also all the fonts in my system folder seem to be Windows True Type fonts. Is this correct?

It altered my helvetica font in a way that will cost me hundreds of hours re-kerning / resizing / repositioning text in CAD files for at least 10 large scale projects in progress at my architecture office.
This is an extremely serious & very expensive issue that has to be affecting all architecture firms who use macs the same way as it's affecting me & my business.
In My Suitcase 5, I can see a list of OSX System Fonts > Local, (such as Calibri, Calisto MT, etc.). I realized I cannot locate these fonts anywhere on the HD. I see them in Suitcase and they load, but the physical files are nowhere to be found. I did a search in Finder for Calibri — nothing, like it doesn't exist. I went to all 3 common system fonts folders — nothing. I went to Users / Library/ Fonts — nothing.Â
8 nights ago my drive failed. Tech replaced it & restored data from Time Machine. He said TM gave him no options (time/date of backup to restore). I noticed immediately that several files were missing off my desktop, no idea if other files have gone missing, too. Suspect the final backup was after the drive began to fail, therefore data was corrupted.Â
I don't know how to locate & replace the missing files, nor how to do a restore.Â

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro running OS10.9.x and in an attempt to troubleshoot another issue I moved all the system fonts into a folder on the desktop. I didn't delete the font folder, just moved the fonts. When I went to restart the computer all it would do is flash between a white and gray screen and randomly display a progress wheel but won't start up.
I just got an imac and love it so far. Have been a pc user (and still am) and have a western digital external drive with crazy info on it that I got running on my mac without having to format it to fat32.
Everything was working perfect up till last night and now I can't access any of the contents on the drive.
It seems that everything is there as the drive only shows 62GB of 500GB free but the folder is empty.
I tried to run a disk repair using disk utility on my mac but everything is grayed out. I also tried to run a disk check on my pc but windows cant seem to access the drive without wanting to format it first.
I recently bought a used macbook10.6.8 from a pawn shop without the install dvd, it is missing ichat, address book, and mail. We have an iMac with the restore dvd. My question is when I upgrade to Zion will the missing apps be replaced? Is there away to remotely install the missing apps from my iMac.
I have recently got some awesome collection of font from URL but as first time mac user i dont know how to install them on my mac book . I need to install them as quickly a possible for my designing project .
I'm thinking about buying the new MacBook pro, the 15 inch i7 to be specific, and this thought just came to my head. USB 3.0. Will Apple likely adapt to this technology soon? I know it's dumb to always wait for the next computer just because the specs are not caught up. If everyone did this, no one would ever buy a computer, but I'm going to own this laptop for a long time, and am I really going to want to own something that will be missing USB 3.0 when that becomes the standard in a year?
When logging onto the mac the other day, a questions mark appeared, upon logon all of my system preferences had disapeared, including Itunes, mail etc along with a number of icons. The machine did do several updates and the icons re appeared, but the Itunes and mail are still missing.
I would have liked a camera, ability to watch anything on-line and multitasking, of course, Apple can't add a camera this time around but they can certainly keep their pulse to the ground and add features via software. I also wonder, like those hackntosh groups, that since this is more of a computer then phone, if that community will develop programs? Which begs the question, why not release it from Apple if it's something the consumer wants and make a few dollars from Apple while doing it.
Using 10.5.1, no problem up until now (new 2.8 iMac). Working all day with Adobe Lightroom 1.3.1, again, no prior problems. The computer froze, which I noted when the screensaver when I left to go eat dinner stayed static without fading out to a new picture. After force quitting and restarting, I went to the System Prefs and when I went to the Desktop/Screensaver section, I got a blank window. I confirmed all the other System Prefs icons work fine. It's as if the Desktop/Screensaver settings are erased/gone/whatever.
my hard drive icon disappeared from my desktop. My second internal hard drive icon is there, but not the main one.I've done every version of computer maintenance that I can think of and still no icon.Meanwhile, my computer is running fine, it just seems like impending doom is around the corner.
I've been experience intermediate issues ranging from not showing icons standard in OSX (such as in my shared devices, HardDrive icons tha tmount on the desktop, etc) this is a unibody 2.4ghz i got in February that came with 10.5.5 and used combo updates on each update...ive done a blank install from scratch with nothing on it and i still experience the missing icon issues that dont happen on other unibody mbps i use ??
((the other macbook pro im connecting to is an identical model 2.4 and the other one is a unibody 17, they display the proper icons under 10.5.7, unlike shown below))
My system gets random freezes even when nothing but the browser, word or small applications, it will beachball for aboud 30seconds to 2minutes even after a clean install and a combo straight to 10.5.7 any ideas on these issues? Am I the only one who is having these missing icon issues...even after a clean isntall with the original OSX Install Discs?
