my hard drive icon disappeared from my desktop.My second internal hard drive icon is there, but not the main one.I've done every version of computer maintenance that I can think of and still no icon.Meanwhile, my computer is running fine, it just seems like impending doom is around the corner.

When I turned it on again, it alerted me that my date was set to something prior to 2008, (Actually December 2000) and that this could cause problems. Also, it no longer remembered my wifi password (which I have had saved for a little over a year now, with no problems.)I also noticed that my hard drive icon was missing!
I restarted the computer, hoping that would fix my problem. When it didn't, I checked for an update and got everything updated. The date is now correct, but my hard drive icon is still missing. I did at some point back up my computer onto a portable hard drive via time machine, but it has been a few months, and I don't know if I would lose any data that I have used or obtained until this point?

Just upgraded to Lion on my desktop machine (iMac) and laptop (MacBook Pro). iCloud is working fine between my laptop and mobile devices (iPhone and iPad), but not with my desktop iMac. This is most obvious with iCal, which still tries to sync with MobileMe (even though the account info says its been upgraded to iCloud.Â

My account setting icon is missing in system preferences. Can anyone provide me with advice on how to fix this problem. Also, whenever I start the computer it makes me log on now.

How do you change the hard drive icon picture in the top right corner to look like the macbook pro computer? I've seen this on a couple people's desktops and was just wondering how you do it. Also, how do you change the folder icon to something that looks cooler.
View 3 Replies View RelatedOver the last few days I've noticed a problem with missing icons. It seems to mainly effect icons in the Trash but I have one or two missing icons for videos and apps within the Finder and on the Desktop. The icon is completely gone - I have to click on the filename to select it. Quicklook works OK (for video).
I can't think of anything I've installed that would have done it except Onyx, but I haven't run that in weeks. I did repair permissions a few days ago but I doubt that could break this. It persists after a reboot. I can't get it to happen on command, it just randomly occurs. Creating a New Folder always works OK.
My time maching back up is 60 GB less than my Hard Drive and I know that the back up is an accurate count of used GB's as I have been keeping an eye on this. I recently empltied my trash and found 15 GB's but I am still showing a 60 GB difference between what my MAC HD says vs. my Time Machine back up HD.  How could this be? and where could I possibly missing 60GB. I would think if they were actually used somewhere that Time Machine would be backing them up as well. Â

I have a MacBook Pro and when I click on the harddrive and Get Info, it tells me I have used 100 gigs of 111 available. But when I right click on Macintosh HD in Finder and Select All of the folders and hit Get Info, it tells me they add up to only 95gigs. Where is the other 5 gigs hiding? My trash is empty.

I currently have a Maxtor external hard drive partitioned into two sections; one for time machine, the other for music, movies, etc. Normally, the two separate partitions would show up on my desktop (labeled "Music" and "Time Machine") but as of lately the Time Machine partition fails to show. I cannot find the volume anywhere, but the Music partition still reads perfectly fine. how I can relocated the Time Machine partition?

I have a 150gb Raptor running Windows XP on my MacPro and unfortunately it'll no longer mount on the desktop. When tested with TechTool Pro and Drive Genius, the drive is recognised but in both instances the volume didn't show. Exactly the same happened with Disk Utility and the System Profiler. I've spoken with Apple and their recomendation is to re-initialise the drive which I really don't want to do as stupidly I dont have a back-up

Once it did finally connect, two external hard drive icons appeared. then everything froze. I restarted my computer, but it wouldn't restart. View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a mid 2011 21.5" 2.7 GHZ I5 IMac with a 1 TB HDD. It is reporting that the startup disk is full (<8gb left). I have surveyed the hard drive and found the "users" folder is using 972GB.The sole "user" folder (me) is using 972 GB An exploration and sum of "folder size" of each of the underlying folders (there are 8: Audio books, Desktop, Documents, Download, Movies, Music, Picture and Public) collectively sums to 316,6GB. The system tool in "about the iMac" (storage tab) shows "other" allocated a 893,97GB. Where is the missing 640GB plus of space? Please can anyone advise me how to identify where space has been allocated and how to rectify the problem? This morning I went to find a band I haven't listened to in a while and it was not in the iTunes library. Did a quick search for the folder on the hard-drive and its not there either. The only thing I can think is maybe the upgrade to Lion did something I hadn't expected. But not sure. Has anyone else had this problem? I THINK I might have it stored on an external...but what a pain to find all the possibly missing music.

I've just got a new external HD, but it's not being recognised by Mac OS X (10.5.7). I assumed it was because it was in a Windows format, so booted Windows, but it then turned out it wasn't formatted at all. What is the easiest way to make this an HFS+ (the Mac OS extended format), and how do I do it as I can't see it anywhere on the Mac (including Disk Utility)?

After I did this all my files have disappeared, but it still shows that all the space that was taken up before is still being occupied. Is there any way I can recover my files? While partitioning my MacBook completely froze and wouldn't unfreeze, I waited about 30 minutes to see if it fix itself, so I held down the power to force a restart, upon rebooting I opened Boot Camp Assistant to try again and I noticed I lost 50 gigabytes of space. Is there a way to fix this and regain my lost hard drive space?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI just bought a used MacBook Pro off somebody online to replace my 2005 pre-Intel Power Mac, which still runs great but I'm just tired of lugging it around. The MacBook Pro was erased but still contains some of the old owner's information (computer name, accounts, etc), and before moving files over I'd like to just wipe it clean and reinstall the OS. He did give me the gray discs, but they are for 10.6 (Snow Leopard) but the computer has been upgraded to 10.7 (Lion); I fear by rebooting I would downgrade to 10.6 since that's the disc I have. Reinstalling 10.7 after 10.6 is out because I don't have the login info used to buy 10.7. I've also considered just keeping 10.6 and just upgrading to 10.8 whenever it comes out (likely soon).

I'm having some trouble changing my hard disk's icon... I can't select it in Get Info to paste in a new icon. It happened randomly after I pasted in one icon, subsequently I couldn't select the icon again...
I have tried repairing permissions and my disk (just via Apple's Disk Utility) and that did absolutely nothing.
I haven't tried changing it over Target Disk Mode and for all I know that might work... but I would kind of like to be able to change my icon without turning off my computer.
I remember in OS 9 you had to make sure File Sharing on the disk was off before you were allowed to modify the icon. I'm aware that that's not how it works in OS X but I tried it for good measure anyway to no avail.
I'm running 10.4.6 on a MacBook Pro 2 GHz. The drive whose icon I'm trying to change is my Startup Disk. I have ~10GB/100GB free on it.
I recently installed the whole Boot Camp deal and (obviously) had to repartition my disk. Afterwards my Mac HD was unaccessible until I ran Disk Utility off my install CD to repair it. Although this icon problem cropped up about a week after the install, I suppose it's possible that it could be related. Interestingly enough, I'm having no problems changing my Windows partition's icon.

We bought the hard drive as our computer keeps popping up with a message saying "Start up disc out of memory" or something to that effect.When we plug the external hard drive in, the blue light appears on it but the icon does not pop up on the desktop to be able to drag stuff onto it. We have tried unplugging and replugging and we have tried rebooting the computer with the hard drive still attached.

I recently bought a 160GB external hard drive, and decided to transfer my iTunes music to it. I followed the instructions in the Help section of the iTunes program. The first time, I mistakenly created an empty "iTunes" folder and put an "iTunes music" folder inside, where i proceeded to copy the files. I had already set the defult location of the library to my F: drive, my external hard drive. However, the original location of the files stayed in iTunes. Again, following the advice of the iTunes program, I deleted the original folders, and I dragged the new iTunes music folder into the window - at which point i had TWO copies of each file - the first one with an exclamation beside it (original file missing) and the second being my new copies.
