OS X :: Making Leopard Mail To Play Notification Sounds?
Nov 29, 2007I have recently thought I was going deaf because I was getting new mail and never hearing the sound for it. I thought maybe iTunes was on too loud or something. However, I've just done a test and no, Mail is definitely not playing the new mail sound. Speakers are the internal default ones, volume is up, but when I send mail to myself from a different Gmail account, when it arrives in Apple Mail there's no sound. This happens whether the app is active or in the background.
I'm sure I've heard it working a couple of times recently, but it's random and seems to be very much in the minority of occasions. Here's another weird thing it does - when I've received new mail during the day but Mail has been turned off, when I get home and open the application it searches for mail, downloads the new ones, and plays the 'No new mail' sound.
I've considered these things might be because I've already received the mail on my Blackberry, but this never used to happen in Tiger, and I'm using a POP Gmail service, not an IMAP one it shouldn't be able to tell I've already had them.
I have Dockstar installed but it worked fine with Dockstar before. Might it be causing a conflict somehow? Dockstar doesn't play any sounds, only changes how the mail notifications appear in the dock icon.
I don't use iChat so I don't know if this problem has affected other Apple apps. I've read some people having problems with that too.

Nov 23, 2009I installed the Mac OS X Snow Leopard and now I can no longer play videos contained in my family picture albums. Is it the new operating system or do you have another solution to assist me. I was always able to play videos prior to the new snow leopard?

Mar 21, 2012If any of you recall, in System 7, you could double-click a sound file and it would just play without launching an app. The OS itself was capable of playing sounds, like system sounds or even music files (you could also use QuickTime). This was pre-iTunes. I miss those days. The other day, I was trying out some sound effects, and double-clicking them launched the behemoth bloatware app, iTunes. Of course, I could pick another app, but I would prefer no app at all, i.e., system-level, ready-to-eat sounds; just click and it plays. Does anyone know of a system-level plug-in or background app that works in this way? An analogous system function would be clippings. Double-click one of those and it just pops up; no app launches. This is how System 7 worked, and I sorely miss it. I use sampled sounds a lot, and I just want to click on them to quickly hear what they sound like in that same simple way we once could.

Mar 18, 2012Is it possible to turn off the feature whereby OSX presents me with a play button in the middle of a sound file? Everytime I want to select a sound file to move or delete it, I move the mouse over the file, click, and the silly thing starts to play. Okay, I know I can click outside the play button, but it is an extra bother to have to precisely position my mouse to avoid playing the file, a bother I can do without.

OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Design Flaw In 'Play Stereo Audio As Mono' Of Universal Access Hearing-tab?
Apr 7, 2012The option to 'play stereo audio as mono' that comes with OSX 10.6 does not work as I expected.When I enable this option it sounds like only one of the two channels becomes mono, while the other one does not sound mono to me.It's hard to notice this, because the total sound does change to 'less' stereo. I've done some testing with different soundcards and testing signals, and found out that when the option is enabled, the mono signals are routed incorrect.While the right channel becomes mono, the left channel seems to be something else; I'm not sure if it's the original left channel of the stereo signal, though. I have reason to believe that the resulting mono sound on the right channel correctly is the 'monofied original sound', but that from the left channel.The resulting mono sound on the left channel sounds like the original left channel of the stereo sound, maybe added with the mono sound of the right channel.
Why do I think so? When using a sound card with more than two outputs, I can clearly see that sound is being sent to the second and the THIRD output, instead of the first and the second output, immediately after I enable mono. Resulting in output on THREE channels:original leftmonofied (left) monofied (right) On my soundcard I can disable the extra outputs, and than I hear:original left + maybe monofied rightmonofied (left) I think the programmer of this great feature made an 'off-by-one error', consequently sending the monified output to the wrong channels;to channel[1] + channel[2] instead of channel[0] + channel[1] I don't know what happens to sound that is sent to channel[2] (the third channel) on a two channel soundcard.It could be mapped to the the first channel, but that of course is speculation. Could be tested though, with the right audio signal.

My configuration is i have a new Imac, and I have alot of movies in avi. format that I want to burn on a DVD and be able to play on my PS3 as that is all I use to watch movies. And I doubt that I can just burn that avi to a DVD and boom it works. So I need to know what I need to convert them to, and what is the best program to convert them (doesn't have to be free software either, just the best because it will be watched on a 61" tv, so I need quality to be awesome cause otherwise it will stretch and distort). And how to burn them with what program for them to work on my PS3.

MacBook Pro :: Will Only Play Certain DVD's
Mar 28, 2012My MacBook Pro will not play third party DVD's such as Dragon Dictate but will play Apple DVD's and DVD's that I have burned. I get the message I get is "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer." think this started after the recent system update to 10.7.3. I tried the DVD in onother MacBookPro that did not have the system software update and had no problems. I downloaded the combo update and re-installed the system software but this did not correct the problem.
