Hardware :: Drive Recognized When Connected Via USB But Not When Connected Via FireWire?
Jan 28, 2009I consider myself very good at all things Mac. But this one has me stumped.
I've just arrived home with a WD My Book Home Edition 1TB external drive. Formatted for Windows it mounted correctly via FireWire and USB.
First things first: I formatted it for the Mac... Mac OS Extended (Journaled), two GUID partition tables. So far so good. Each partition is recognized, each mounts like it should.
Time Machine then backed up my Intel iMac... again, everything's normal. No odd or unusual behavior.
Here's where things get strange.
For whatever reason I formatted the drive via USB. But my intention hereafter is to connect via FireWire... I need each USB port for peripherals.
But the drive isn't recognized through FireWire. I'm asked if I want to initialize it. When reconnected through USB the drive mounts again.
What's going on? Why is the drive recognized when connected via USB but not when connected via FireWire?

Dec 27, 2006I'm having some troubles with an external enclosure and my sister's new imac. The enclosure I'm using is a Tao Tec 2500 (2.5" drive) IDE --> USB device with the Y-cable. The drive has been formatted to NTFS and has some files on it. As far as I can tell though the version of OSX the new imac is running should support read capability with the file system though. The computer is a latest generation imac (purchased about 12/20/2006) and running a new revision of OSX (about 1.0.4.7 I believe). My problem seems to be the computer simply does not recognize the drive. Disk utility doesn't see it nor the usb manager in system tools. The LED indicator on the drive indicates that it's receiving power and I've tried swapping the usb ports around just to be sure I don't have a bumed port. It simply seems like OSX just doesn't know the drive's there.

Oct 9, 2007I am a photographer. I use 4 X 1TB LaCie external hard drives to store my digital images. 2 as masters for different business segments and 2 as their back-ups. They are daisy-chained using Firewire 800. Recently my G5 has stopped recognizing one of the drives. Is there any way to get my machine to re-recognize the missing drive? I have rewired the four drives to see if there was a problem with the cabling, but this does not appear to be the case. I am coming up to the 1 year warranty period on this drive and need to get it back to LaCie if there is no other solution.

Apr 11, 2012I recently invested in a refurbished iMac which is running Mac OS X Lion 10.7.3 (11D2001).
I am trying to access my existing external hard drive through the machine and although this lights up when plugged in, it doesn't appear in the finder. Other Memory sticks work without problem.
It is a Western Digital Elements 160GB Portable Hard Drive that has worked and continues to do so without problem on my ancient iBook G4.

Jun 1, 2014I have used a Samsung HX 1Tb external hard drive under OSX Snow Leopard with absolutely no problem. Since I upgraded to the free (improved?!?) OSX Mavericks my Macbook Pro cannot "see" my hard drive. All I get when I plug it in is the following message -
my MacBook thinks that the hard drive is formatted for windows - but why should it work OK under Snow Leopard but not with Mavericks? I don't want to simply reformat the external drive because I'll lose all the files stored on it.Is there suitable software/Apps that I can use to let my Mac access this external hard drive.Incidentally my partners new Macbook Air can still read this hard drive.Â

Jan 20, 2009I have two external hard drives, one 250GB for my Time Machine, and one 500GB for other stuff. I had accidently formatted my 500GB to use for Time Machine, but realized, I didn't need that much storage, so reverted to the 250GB for Time Machine and the 500GB for storage. But it seems, in the formatting stage (for Time Machine), it set my file system for the 500GB to Mac OS Journaled. I can see this hard drive on the Mac, but it does not recognize it in Windows (although I hear the USB plug in sound, doesn't show up in "My Computer"). Does this have to do with the formatting? If so, how can I format it so that the external hard drives can be read by both Mac OS X and Windows? Does it require moving my data (before formatting?)?

Jan 31, 2010Another one of those "external hard drive not recognized" problems: I am using a Mac Mini. The external LaCie drive is in one of those beautiful boxes designed by a guy named Porsche. It's connected via Fire Wire. I have my iPhoto library stored on it. It was working just fine for the past two days after I first connected it.
Now it does not show on the Desktop. It is identified only as "Unknown device" in "About This Mac." iPhoto doesn't recognize it. I've looked at the other threads on this subject here and have reset the PRAM. Disk Utility recognized it for a while and said the disk was OK. Now Disk Utility does not recognize it at all.
I turned off the drive and turned it back on. That resulted in an alarming series of beeps, almost like somebody was sending the Morse code symbol for "E" over and over again. I turned the drive off and then on again. Now the light goes on and the drive whirs nicely. I am using System 10.6.2. Or rather, at this point it is using me.

MacBook :: External Hard-drive Won't Mount Or Be Recognized
May 31, 2012I just installed a new internal hard drive into my macbook as my old one was failing. Before doing this I backed up all of my information through Time Machine onto a Seagate FreeAgent external hard drive. I've been using this external hard drive for the past two years and I've never had any problems with my macbook mounting it. Once I had all of my personal information backed up I took out the external hard drive and then proceeded to take out my old internal hard drive and installed the new one. I installed the Mac operating system and the Macbook started up just fine but when it came time to reload all of my personal setting using Time Machine my macbook didn't recognize that there was an external drive plugged in. I know it isn't the external drive as it mounts just fine on other laptops. how I can get my macbook to mount the drive so that I can transfer all of my information onto this new internal drive?Â

Nov 16, 2010im looking for an external enclosure that provides a firewire option for my macbook pro. The reason i am doing this is because my macbook will randomly eject my usb powered one for no reason. I have been reading that firewire does not have this problem. Im only looking for an enclosure as I replaced my stock 320gb hardrive with a 64gb ssd for my main drive. Preferably something in the 30$ range because im a poor college student . Anybody know of a good enclosure to go with?

Feb 5, 2010I recently bought a VANTEC NexStar 3 NST-360FBSU-BK. In the exclosure, I have a SATA drive capable of 3.0Gb/second. It's attached to my Late 2009 Mac Mini via FireWire 800. Based upon my understanding and in this situation, the FireWire should be the bottleneck. Therefore, I should be enjoying bandwidth somewhere shy of 800Mb/second. nfortunately, I'm not getting any where near that speed. I can transfer a 726MB file in 18.6 seconds. According to my math, that's ~5808Mb/18.6 seconds = ~312 Mb/second. This is not even FireWire 400 or USB 2.0 speed.For completeness sake, I also just upgraded from 2GB of ram to 4GB (both PC8500) but nothing seems negatively affected (in fact the computer is much, much more snappy!).

May 21, 2010I have a few macs running Tiger and Leopard and do not have a hard drive that is filled to more than 20GB of the capacity. Looking for external hard drive solutions. I have found a couple of very good drives that only have FW 400 and USB 2.0, one in particular is a older model G-Drive 500GB for $50 that is supposed to be quite reliable. These drives are being blown out due to newer ones have esata and fw 800. Would I see a difference in speed cloning or backing up to a a fw 400 drive even if I get a newer mac that only has fw 800 ports and I use a 400-800 adaptor? The better drives are faster 7200 RM vs the slower 5400 drives, mostly portable that I have been looking at. I have been reading posts that for applications such as mine I would not see a difference. For the most part I use the computers for office related tasks including Word, Excel etc with not much else, although I have some different utility programs. I just want a bootable drive should my hard drive fail. I use Carbon Copy Cloner to clone my drives. My main comp has two drives where the primary is cloned to a secondary, but want a external that I can easily plug into a new mac and clone the hard drive in that Mac to my external drive!

Mar 13, 2012I am having a heck of a time trying to get either a brand new Lacie d2 Quadra OR a G-Tech G-Drive (both 2TB desktop models) to work on my iMac via the Firewire port. Mac is running 10.7.3, 2.8ghz Intel Core Duo. Â
Both drives are brand new out of the box. Â
When I connected them using Firewire they look like they mount, but they are unusable. They won't unmount if I try to reformat. Get error messages if I try to reformat, verify or disk repair. Messages say something about not being able to read some information. Keep in mind there's nothing on the drives. I have tried getting them to work with Time Machine with no luck. A few times it would backup for several hours only to give an error message and crash. Something is clearly wrong when I use Firewire. Â
But when I connect using USB? Voila! No problems at all. Repair, formatting, storage, etc. all work fine. Â
What the heck is it with Firewire? I am dealing with slow transfer speeds for now, but I'd really like to have them connected via Firewire and off my USB ports. Â
I have zapped the PRAM and permission module to no avail. Not sure what else can be done. Â

Apr 30, 2012Have late 2006 iMac 24'' and I can't boot from external FireWire drive. If I connect the same external drive via usb2 I can boot from it but it is slower than FireWire800 would be. The external drive is in i-tec 3.5 External Case.Â

May 29, 2012I backed up some movies for the kids onto an external drive (USB without power cord). Now when I plug it in, it does not even show up. If I try to look at it with the disk utility it sayd the file system is not recognised. Last time I accesed the disk was under leopard. Could it be that the change to lion has cut off access now?I do hear the disk start up when it plugs in and I have not seen any strange history with this disk before switching to Lion. (A drive of the same make but bigger and with power cord plus USB still works from before and after Lion). Small disk is Freecom 1TB (pocet size), Large disk is 2TB also Freecom but with powerfeed seperately.

Mar 22, 2009I am in need of an external hard drive for backups of my new 24" iMac due to arrive on Wednesday March 25. I am moving from the PC works (old Dell) and will need something larger than the old one I have for the long term. I have an old external hard drive case and a 250GB ATA hard drive inside I can use for the time being with the new Mac if I reformat it.
That said, I would like to get a drive that is at least equal to what is in the iMac with is 1 TB. I have read a lot of postings and believe I will get a Western Digital MyBook for Time Machine backups (unless someone has a better alternative). Is there any reason to get the Studio 1 or II (FW 800) over the Essential (USB 2.0) for my purposes - backups only? The price difference is $40-80 for equivalent drive space with connections being the difference.

Dec 1, 2009I recently bought both a new MacBook Pro running Snow Leopard (10.6.2) and a 500 gb Western Digital firewire drive to back up my files. I copied a large amount of files to the external drive, but when I try to move those files into a different folder on the same drive to organize them, it tries to copy the files instead of just moving them. I can't figure out how to just move them into a new folder for consolidation without creating a duplicate file. Am I missing something basic here?

Dec 16, 2009im trying to install Mac OS X 10.5 on to an external drive. I want to run Leopard off of an External Hard Drive which will connect via Firewire of USB 2.0. I have booted up using the install DVD that i bought a couple years ago to upgrade from Tiger. However each time i install i get an error saying that it cannot be installed. It allows me to start the install and is almost complete before i get this error. I have it partitioned using the Apple Partition Map so i can boot up on a PowerPC computer.
What should i do to install 10.5 on an external drive?
