Hardware :: Moving Files On An External Firewire Drive?

Dec 1, 2009

I recently bought both a new MacBook Pro running Snow Leopard (10.6.2) and a 500 gb Western Digital firewire drive to back up my files. I copied a large amount of files to the external drive, but when I try to move those files into a different folder on the same drive to organize them, it tries to copy the files instead of just moving them. I can't figure out how to just move them into a new folder for consolidation without creating a duplicate file. Am I missing something basic here?

ITunes :: Moving Music Files To External Hard Drive - Ipod Syncing?

Dec 27, 2010

I am running out of space on my laptop so I am moving all my music to an external hard drive. If I keep my file directory structure and naming the same, can I simply "re-point" iTunes to this new storage location and all my songs (etc...) will keep working in iTunes? Will storing the music on an external hard drive effect the performance (speed) of iTunes and/or iPod syncing?

Applications :: Moving ITunes To External Hard Drive - Orignal Files Missing?

Jan 15, 2009

I recently bought a 160GB external hard drive, and decided to transfer my iTunes music to it. I followed the instructions in the Help section of the iTunes program. The first time, I mistakenly created an empty "iTunes" folder and put an "iTunes music" folder inside, where i proceeded to copy the files. I had already set the defult location of the library to my F: drive, my external hard drive. However, the original location of the files stayed in iTunes. Again, following the advice of the iTunes program, I deleted the original folders, and I dragged the new iTunes music folder into the window - at which point i had TWO copies of each file - the first one with an exclamation beside it (original file missing) and the second being my new copies.

MacBook Pro :: Why Doesn't Disk Space Free Up After Moving Files To An External Drive

Feb 28, 2012

I have a 750GB internal HD but film a lot of movies. To free up space, I have moved my iMovie clips off to a secondary hard drive, but I have not seen my free disk space free up on my Macbook pro. Why is this? I moved, not copied the files. They only show now on the external hard drive. I am looking at the free space in Finder > Get Info. I have easily moved a few hundred GB off to the new drive, but my internal HD still shows as over 500Gb used.

IMac (Intel) :: Moving Files To External Drive Not Creating Hard Disk Space

Sep 2, 2014

My 500gb iMac (purchased April 2010) is about at capacity.  350gb of space is taken up by home movies (.mov) in iMovie.  I bought an external hard drive and have moved about 200gb over to that drive.

After transfer, I deleted the original Events off iMovie and emptied the trash.  I checked in both iMovie and in Finder and no longer see those files present on the Mac.

I thought this was going smooth and everything worked perfectly, but….when i went to check how much storage space i created on the Mac, the amount of available space barely budged (i moved 200gb of data to the new drive and i created about 30gb of space on the Mac).

Are these "deleted" files hidden somewhere and I need to go delete from somewhere else?  How do I make sure I get back the storage that i need?

I need to import my movies via firewire, but can only do it through my brother's macbook, as my new macbook does not have firewire. Therefore, I imported 100 GB worth of movies onto his computer, then transferred the iMovie Events and iMovie Projects folders onto a hard drive, then transferred them from the hard drive to MY macbook. Now they are sitting on the desk top. How do I get them into iMovie on my macbook, now that I have transferred the files from my brother's macbook onto my macbook's desktop?

OS X :: Moving Files From PC External HD To New Mac External HD?

Sep 22, 2010

I have an external HD connected to my PC which contains all of my music, video, photo, etc files. I recently purchased a new 1TB LaCie d2 quadra drive to use with my macbook. Both of these drives are currently connected to my mac so i can move the files from one drive to another. I understand that the mac cannot write to the NTFS drive but it can read from it. I thought the best way to move the files over would be through the mac, i.e. using finder to move the files from one volume to the other. Is this the best, easiest way? or is there another way?

Applications :: Moving ITunes Files From External To Internal HD?

Sep 3, 2010

I recently upgraded my internal HD from the factory 120 gig to a 500. Because my itunes library is so large (250 gigs) I had been keeping most everything on an external WD drive. Now I'm trying to figure out how to move all these files from the external to my new internal drive without having to reset all my playlists and such (I have two iphones and an ipad pulling from certain playlists. It would be a huge undertaking to redo all this).

Does anyone know of an easy way to accomplish this? I thought about just copying and pasting all the music directly to the itunes folder. But then when I go to play the song in itunes it says the file cant be located (the external HD is disconnected) and asks if I want it to search for the song. For a few songs this would be fine. But with 46,000 its out of the question.

OS X :: Firewire 800 External Drive Is Slower Than USB2.0?

Feb 5, 2010

I recently bought a VANTEC NexStar 3 NST-360FBSU-BK. In the exclosure, I have a SATA drive capable of 3.0Gb/second. It's attached to my Late 2009 Mac Mini via FireWire 800. Based upon my understanding and in this situation, the FireWire should be the bottleneck. Therefore, I should be enjoying bandwidth somewhere shy of 800Mb/second. nfortunately, I'm not getting any where near that speed. I can transfer a 726MB file in 18.6 seconds. According to my math, that's ~5808Mb/18.6 seconds = ~312 Mb/second. This is not even FireWire 400 or USB 2.0 speed. For completeness sake, I also just upgraded from 2GB of ram to 4GB (both PC8500) but nothing seems negatively affected (in fact the computer is much, much more snappy!).

OS X :: Firewire 400 Vs 800 - External Hard Drive Solutions

May 21, 2010

I have a few macs running Tiger and Leopard and do not have a hard drive that is filled to more than 20GB of the capacity. Looking for external hard drive solutions. I have found a couple of very good drives that only have FW 400 and USB 2.0, one in particular is a older model G-Drive 500GB for $50 that is supposed to be quite reliable. These drives are being blown out due to newer ones have esata and fw 800. Would I see a difference in speed cloning or backing up to a a fw 400 drive even if I get a newer mac that only has fw 800 ports and I use a 400-800 adaptor? The better drives are faster 7200 RM vs the slower 5400 drives, mostly portable that I have been looking at. I have been reading posts that for applications such as mine I would not see a difference. For the most part I use the computers for office related tasks including Word, Excel etc with not much else, although I have some different utility programs. I just want a bootable drive should my hard drive fail. I use Carbon Copy Cloner to clone my drives. My main comp has two drives where the primary is cloned to a secondary, but want a external that I can easily plug into a new mac and clone the hard drive in that Mac to my external drive!

OS X V10.7 Lion :: No External Drive Will Work Via Firewire

Mar 13, 2012

I am having a heck of a time trying to get either a brand new Lacie d2 Quadra OR a G-Tech G-Drive (both 2TB desktop models) to work on my iMac via the Firewire port. Mac is running 10.7.3, 2.8ghz Intel Core Duo.

Both drives are brand new out of the box.

When I connected them using Firewire they look like they mount, but they are unusable. They won't unmount if I try to reformat. Get error messages if I try to reformat, verify or disk repair. Messages say something about not being able to read some information. Keep in mind there's nothing on the drives. I have tried getting them to work with Time Machine with no luck. A few times it would backup for several hours only to give an error message and crash. Something is clearly wrong when I use Firewire.

But when I connect using USB? Voila! No problems at all. Repair, formatting, storage, etc. all work fine.

What the heck is it with Firewire? I am dealing with slow transfer speeds for now, but I'd really like to have them connected via Firewire and off my USB ports.

I have zapped the PRAM and permission module to no avail. Not sure what else can be done.

Hardware :: Vanishing Files On Firewire Drive?

Sep 20, 2008

I recently bought a 1TB Seagate FreeAgent Pro drive that I have partitioned 14 ways and hooked up via a firewire 400 connection to my eMac G4 1.0GHz running OS X 10.4.11. I use four of the 60GB partitions to store music files in several different folders.

Frequently after I boot up the drive, I open iTunes and it gives me a broken link, saying it can't find such and such a song. I look in the folder where the file should be and it's GONE -- sometimes along with all the other files in the same folder, occasionally with other files still present. (Are they invisible, maybe?) I search for the missing file in the Finder and sure enough it shows up, but as an outline icon with no folder path. I run Disk Utility to verify permissions on the affected disk and it tells me everything is fine. Then the file suddenly shows up properly again and iTunes can recognize it.

Applications :: Moving IPhoto To External Drive?

Mar 20, 2009

I have a 60GB iPhoto 08 library that I want to move from my internal iMac drive to my iomega 1TB NAS drive. Both the NAS and the iMac are connected via Gigabit ethernet. I have dragged a ton of files, namely my Itunes database, and it flew threw very quickly. But copying my iPhoto database, and pasting it to the NAS drive, it is crazy slow. 60 minutes later and it just finished it's first Gig. It says I have about 61 hours remaining to copy the remaining 59GB.

iPhoto is closed, and there is not much else going on with the machine. Even while this is copying I can drag and drop lots of other files and they fly through the network. Is this what I should expect?
