PowerPC :: External Hard Drive Not Recognized By Computer
Sep 19, 2010
My WD firewire 800 drive has stopped working, I can hear it spinning when I plug it in but the light doesn't come on and my computer doesn't recognize it. I've tried both the firewire and usb connections.

I plugged in my hard drive into my Macbook Pro and it wouldn't show up on the desktop. Opened the finder, and it wasn't there either. I went into the disk utility and it was there. So then I thought maybe rebooting the computer would help. Then I plugged it into my friend's Macbook and it showed up no problem. The last time I used it I remember that error appearing where it forces you to shut off the computer. Does that have anything to do with it? I do photography and I have my entire collection on this hard drive, so restoring it is not an option. Like I said, the device was recognized and worked fine on my friend's laptop, just not on mine.

I have tried troubleshooting, searching this forum, & googling to no avail. I'm hoping someone smarter than me can figure this out.
Short Version:
Purchased this hard drive:

and purchased this external enclosure:
[URL]
when I plug it into my macbook, PC, or a powerbook, the disk is not recgonized, I can not get Disk Utility to even recognize that the hard drive exists. I thought it may be a bad drive, so I sent it in to Seagate Warrenty, they sent me a new one and I'm still having the same problem. Does anyone know how I can format the drive or any way I can get it to be recognized?
Longer Version:
My powerbook crashed, so I purchased this HD to replace it. I installed the 1st seagate and when i went to install OSX and said select destination drive, there was none there to select. I was able to repair the original HD so I reinstalled it and went to install OSX and it DID show the drive to install it on, so I don't think that it is the computer/motherboard. Then I sent in for the 2nd seagate, tried getting it to work with the external enclosure and installing internally in the powerbook, etc. nothing seemed to work.
I am wanting to install the new drive in the powerbook as the old drive is on its last leg (but currently works). Every thread i have searched for that was similar, there was no solution that I could use.

I am a photographer. I use 4 X 1TB LaCie external hard drives to store my digital images. 2 as masters for different business segments and 2 as their back-ups. They are daisy-chained using Firewire 800. Recently my G5 has stopped recognizing one of the drives. Is there any way to get my machine to re-recognize the missing drive? I have rewired the four drives to see if there was a problem with the cabling, but this does not appear to be the case. I am coming up to the 1 year warranty period on this drive and need to get it back to LaCie if there is no other solution.

I recently invested in a refurbished iMac which is running Mac OS X Lion 10.7.3 (11D2001).
I am trying to access my existing external hard drive through the machine and although this lights up when plugged in, it doesn't appear in the finder. Other Memory sticks work without problem.
It is a Western Digital Elements 160GB Portable Hard Drive that has worked and continues to do so without problem on my ancient iBook G4.

I have used a Samsung HX 1Tb external hard drive under OSX Snow Leopard with absolutely no problem. Since I upgraded to the free (improved?!?) OSX Mavericks my Macbook Pro cannot "see" my hard drive. All I get when I plug it in is the following message -
my MacBook thinks that the hard drive is formatted for windows - but why should it work OK under Snow Leopard but not with Mavericks? I don't want to simply reformat the external drive because I'll lose all the files stored on it.Is there suitable software/Apps that I can use to let my Mac access this external hard drive.Incidentally my partners new Macbook Air can still read this hard drive.

I have two external hard drives, one 250GB for my Time Machine, and one 500GB for other stuff. I had accidently formatted my 500GB to use for Time Machine, but realized, I didn't need that much storage, so reverted to the 250GB for Time Machine and the 500GB for storage. But it seems, in the formatting stage (for Time Machine), it set my file system for the 500GB to Mac OS Journaled. I can see this hard drive on the Mac, but it does not recognize it in Windows (although I hear the USB plug in sound, doesn't show up in "My Computer"). Does this have to do with the formatting? If so, how can I format it so that the external hard drives can be read by both Mac OS X and Windows? Does it require moving my data (before formatting?)?

Another one of those "external hard drive not recognized" problems: I am using a Mac Mini. The external LaCie drive is in one of those beautiful boxes designed by a guy named Porsche. It's connected via Fire Wire. I have my iPhoto library stored on it. It was working just fine for the past two days after I first connected it.
Now it does not show on the Desktop. It is identified only as "Unknown device" in "About This Mac." iPhoto doesn't recognize it. I've looked at the other threads on this subject here and have reset the PRAM. Disk Utility recognized it for a while and said the disk was OK. Now Disk Utility does not recognize it at all.
I turned off the drive and turned it back on. That resulted in an alarming series of beeps, almost like somebody was sending the Morse code symbol for "E" over and over again. I turned the drive off and then on again. Now the light goes on and the drive whirs nicely. I am using System 10.6.2. Or rather, at this point it is using me.

I just installed a new internal hard drive into my macbook as my old one was failing. Before doing this I backed up all of my information through Time Machine onto a Seagate FreeAgent external hard drive. I've been using this external hard drive for the past two years and I've never had any problems with my macbook mounting it. Once I had all of my personal information backed up I took out the external hard drive and then proceeded to take out my old internal hard drive and installed the new one. I installed the Mac operating system and the Macbook started up just fine but when it came time to reload all of my personal setting using Time Machine my macbook didn't recognize that there was an external drive plugged in. I know it isn't the external drive as it mounts just fine on other laptops. how I can get my macbook to mount the drive so that I can transfer all of my information onto this new internal drive?

I have an external hard drive that I have been using for back ups for several months, but now I get an error message that says, "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer". I looked up other peoples issues with this, and they have used things like disk warrior to fix it, but I am not very interested in saving what's on the hard drive anyways. I just want to clear out the hard drive and start fresh.

I have a hard drive that I connect to my computer via an IDE to USB adapter. It works quite well, most of the time. A couple days ago I tried copying a large file to the drive (which is in FAT-16 I think) and the copy froze after 28 MB. The hard drive failed to eject, so I just disconnected it without ejecting. After I dismissed the device removal warning, I immediately plugged the HD back in and opened disk utility. I tried to reformat it, but the computer froze and my screen dimmed and the warning came up telling me to reboot in several different languages.
Now, whenever I plug in the hard drive, it is not acknowledged by the computer at all. I always end up unplugging it after a couple minutes. After I unplug it, a folder with the name of the drive (which happens to be "untitled") appears on the desktop, but I can't do anything with it. This folder is classified as a disk and it is acknowledged by Disk Utility. A couple minutes after I disconnect the HD, Mac OS X always quits and I have to reboot. How can I repair this hard drive? How can I get Disk Utility to acknowledge it?

I am looking to buy an external hard drive for my intel Mac and MacBook Pro to download and save some 8,000 plus photos. My computers only have USB 2 connections. I am finding that most new external hard drives have USB 3 connections. Can I use an external hard drive with a USB 3 connection on my older Mac computers? If so do I need an adapter to connect USB 3 to USB 2?

I know there are already several threads with questions on how to wipe an ibook hard drive but this one is slightly different. I can't seem to boot my computer from the install disc that came with it. I turn off the computer, hold down c and get a folder with a question mark in it. However when the computer starts I can see the disc folders. I open up disc utility and can wipe the drive but is this really wiping it? I thought I had to boot up from the CD? I ask as I am selling my machine and don't want to think I have wiped something when I have not. I have also been through the same process (from the disc just running in the drive) to install OSX Tiger. But again how do I know if it has cleared all my old settings? Do I have faulty discs if I cannot re-boot from them. All I want to do is a clean and install.

when I insert my 'FAT' formatted external hard drive (Samsung M3) into my mac book pro it comes up with the error message that says "the inserted disk is not readable by this computer" and I therefore cannot access the files. The story (potential further details):
1. I had a problem with my mac where it took hours to load each time I turned it on, would only work when power was plugged in etc. so I had to reformat my mac hard drive (when I tried to veriify it said repair, that wouldn't work). So i'm starting with a recently reformatted, clean mac.
2. Before doing this I reformatted my external hard drive (whilst on windows machine) to FAT32 (so I can use on both windows and mac) so that I could back up my files.
3. I then transferred files from mac onto external hard drive and then also put them on a windows machine.
4. After reformatting mac hard drive when I then tried to transfer files back onto the mac I get the 'not readable' error.

My external hard drive has been repeatedly ejected improperly and now it is not displaying on my computer, not even in disk utility. How do I re-mount this external hard drive? In the past when this has happened, all I had to do was go to Disk Utility or use DiskWarrior to fix the issue but now it won't even show up in either of these apps.

I just bought a new 1 TB external hard drive for back up purposes. When i connect it via USB to my Snow Leopard macbook pro, it gives me a "this disk not readable by this computer message". I click ignore, and it lets me do whatever i want to the disk - read, write, etc. I have tried repair disk - tells me it's good to go, and tried reformatting several times - thought not zero disk data or the 7 pass bs.
