View 7 RepliesI did a problem free install of Win-doze xp pro sp.2 via Boot Camp and all was well, everything went off without a hitch... However I only partitioned 35 GB for Win-doze which after some thought I realized that having installed windoze for the sole purpose of playing games (which require alot of space) Anyway, I played a few games like "Crysis" and "The Last Remnant" both worked fantastically but I didn't want to get too far in them just to have to re-do the boot camp later and lose the data, so I went ahead and uninstalled the windoze partition and proceeded to go through the motions again, However this time around I set aside a 200GB partition. For some reason everything seemed to take MUCH longer, or instance it sat on the "restarting computer..." screen for 5-10 minutes, finally restarted then windoze loaded and went to the collecting information;Dynamic update;preparing installation;installing windoze
View 4 Replies View RelatedSo my old 15" early 2006 Macbook Pro (1,1) no loger recognizes the primary display. I can use an external monitor just fine, but when I go into System Profiler, it's like my primary display disappeared. I reinstalled Snow Leopard, reset PRAM, NVRAM, repaired my permissions, tried to update my mac, but litterally nothing I have tried has worked.
It started when I tried to install both Windows 7 and Ubuntu. After completing the Windows 7 installation, I restarted my computer and it just hung on the Apple logo. I could feel the fans begining to spin really fast and it felt like my laptop was on fire. I restarted my computer, let it cool down, and it hung at the Apple logo again. I rebooted it a final time, and nothing. Black screen. No backlight or image...nothing.

Like everyone else, my super drive is bad. Need to clean install Mac OSX Snow Leopard remotely, though I want to do a clean install.Similar to the way Apple has enabled remote OSX Install using a different computers drive for the Macbook Air, I need to enable it on my Macbook Pro. When holding down the option key and booting into the selection menu, there is no option to connect to a network (via the dropdown like the Macbook Air). Problem #1 : My MBP wouldn't boot off the DVD. It just keeps spinning.
Problem #2 : I then tried restarting and then choosing "Options" while coming up to choose the Disk. Again it just spins.
Problem #3 : I chose "Command R" for recovery mode but it again tries to download OS Lion afresh and that's not an option for me right now (I'm not in USA now, but in India. No high bandwidth connection) How can I do a fresh installation of Lion?

View 7 Replies View RelatedThe installer script for OS X 10.5 crashed during the last part of a clean installation on my G5 (see sig.) and left some folders and aliases to folders visible, that I am sure should be invisible. Updated to 10.5.8 same situation. Running DU to repair permissions does not fix this, nor can I set the folders to invisible using Cmnd+I. The system runs just fine, but the folders and aliases listed below should not be visible. Folders Aliases (the folders these point to are also visible).

I'm going to update my MacPro Quad Core 3.2 installing Snow Leopard.The machine has a RAID 5 already installed and working perfectly.I'm wondering how the correct procedure is to rebuilt the RAID and install Snow Leopard on it.I don't want to install the update, I want to inizialise all the disks and get a fresh and clean installation.Do I have to use Disk Utility or RADI Utility?

I have just upgraded from a 60GB HD running OS X 10.4.11? to a 250GB drive.
Before changing HDs, I backed up the old HD onto an external FireWire drive using Retrospect Express 6.1.
I made a clean install of 10.5.6 onto the new HD, installed Retrospect Express.
I then restored my entire old HD to a *folder* on my new HD. There is room for it on the external FireWire disk also if that is better.
I expected wrongly to be able to use Migration Assistant to integrate my applications, e-mails, calendar, bookmarks, etc. into 10.5.6 but it did not allow me to select a folder to migrate from (I think it is looking preferably for another Mac attached via FireWire or at least an external disk, but I'm not sure what it's limits are).
I am also now concerned about Migration Assistant losing data (such as filed e-mails) as I have consulted with a tech friend who says it is problematic and I should restore by hand!Can you tell me the most efficient and reliable way to get out of my predicament? I'm crazy busy business-wise and I don't have time to lose wallowing & finding my own way, I can afford the time to do things right though :-) which is why I'm asking.
Obviously I am shut down now, I do not want to start doing "real work" on my computer until all my applications and files are in their proper places.
Applications (Quark, Adobe, Apple), all my Mail accounts, iCal, Fonts, Firefox + extensions & bookmarks are my mission-critical tools.
With Snow Leopard being so much smaller and lighter than previous versions of OS X are there still things to cleanup after a new install? Do programs like XSlimmer still do much? If there are still things to do, are there programs updates for Snow Leopard to automate this?

After I got it I noticed the system requirements only list Windows.For the **** of it I installed it in my Power Mac. The system seems to recognize it in "About This Mac..." as a "Serial Controller". There appear to be serial ports assigned to it: /dev/cu.pci-serial3a.When I try to run a serial terminal program over this port (connected to some known working hardware) I get gibberish. I've checked out the cable and remote hardware on another machine and it works fine.

I tried it just now like twice but I got the spinning wheel of death. It wouldn't go pass the apple sign and spinning wheel.
I am trying to follow the following guide to do a triple boot, but I am stuck in Windows 7 installation

I have done the following:
1. Did a clean installation of OS X Snow Leopard on hard drive (Not yet partitioned the hard drive)
2. Installed rEFIt
I am not sure what the poster means by making sure it works by pressing the option button. I am assuming it means that I will be able to see the options I can choose when I press option? (I do see options to pick either "Hard Drive" or whatever disc in the DVD)
3. Partitioned 30 GB (or was it 40 GB? x.x I forgot sorry) space in Boot Camp Assistant for Windows installation. Chose the option to install Windows later.
4. Inserted OS X Snow Leopard installation disc and boot from there.
5. Opened up the Disk Utility and partitioned a hard drive (called Hard Drive_2) via the Partition section as instructed by the guide. Formatted in MAc OS Extended (Journaled)
So now, in that area I see "Hard Drive", "Hard Drive_2" and "BOOT CAMP" (so I am assuming that is what the poster meant by "3 partitions".
6. Restarted the computer with Windows installation disc.
Problems occur right here:
Problem 1: I do not see anything called "C something" as the poster said. But I do see something called "Boot Camp"
Problem 2: All the partitions that are available says that "Windows 7 can't be installed". So my question is am I supposed to "delete" a specific partition to install it?
I have pictures of the screen which I will upload later if this isn't clear enough.

I heard about people having issues with screens going blank, so I went ahead and followed Apple's instructions on the matter. I put the files they said on an SD card and started into the Windows installer. But after about two screens, it says, "Windows could not display the images available for installation." Then my computer restarts.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have the latest MacBook Pro. I lost the CD that came with it. I'm attempting to reinstall Snow Leopard using a retail disc purchased from Apple. I've tried booting it by holding "C" and by holding "OPTION" and selecting the disc. I've also tried reseting the PRAM. It goes the the Apple screen and I can hear the disk spinning. Then it just hangs there.
Could this have anything to do with the fact that the computer came with 10.6.3 and I'm attempting to install 10.6 from the retail disc?
like a number of ppl, I only had a legit XP Pro SP1 and not an SP2 version as required for a seamless Boot Camp install. (Actually I do have a legit SP2 CD but the activation key has been mislaid!... damn). I was looking at going down the somewhat convoluted "slipstream" path to generate a working SP2 build utilising the SP1 key I had but what I have found is that the BootDir registry hack that had been used in the past for SP3 compatibility, also works for SP1 installs. Basically the problem is that the Apple supplied Windows drivers requires the Installer from an SP2 build and the SP2 update fails on a Boot Camp partition without the BootDir hack. So my suggested install method is as follows... ymmv. (Note this has been done with two identical MacBook Pro's with the latest Leopard build). Create the BootCamp partition as per the standard instructions and using your XP Pro SP1 CD going through the usual Windows install dialogs to the point where it want's to restart. I have found that when the Windows tries to shutdown to perform a restart that it hangs. Just hold down the power button on the Mac to force a shutdown leaving a minute or so just in case Windows is being slow. Boot back to Windows (via standard Boot Camp Option button) and perform the registry hack as published elsewhere for SP3 updates. Basically it is adding a key 'BootDir' with a value of 'C:' to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionSetup
Note that you need to be able to right click on the mouse in regedit to create this key and at this point without the Apple drivers installed I don't think trackpad supports this so I have used a generic two button USB mouse. Once this registry entry is added you can install the SP2 update (as downloaded from Microsoft - WindowsXP-KB835935-SP2-ENU.exe). Once again I have found that Windows still hangs after the SP2 install restart until the Apple updates are applied... so nail the power button again after a pause or two. Once you are back to Windows again you can now install the Apple drivers found on the Disk 1 of you Leopard CD although I would recommend downloading the latest v2.1 from Apple if not. (Note there is a minor update to v2.1.1 available through the Apple Software Installation program). I am not sure if you could go direct to SP3 using this method but I have tended to stick with SP2 as SP3 tends to slow bootup/shutdown. Most Mac users would use FireFox/Safari in preference to IE so you have already improved the security of XP
I am in desperate need of some help. I own a MacBook running OS X Leopard, I love the mac but I prefer the Windows for its compatibility.
I have a Windows XP Pro disk (But it is a copy) and I partitioned a space on my hard drive. I inserted the disk and it rebooted. Now here is the problem.
When Leopard boots up with the welcome tune, it stays at a grey screen. Only after a while the apple sign starts and it doesn't do anything from there. I left it on for a whole night and still, nothing.
I tried holding down the Option key when it booted up, now this is the only way I can start up on my Leopard OS. Then I tried booting it up from the Windows disk. The screen went black and it came up with this message:
"No bootable devise, please insert the disk and press any key..."
Am I doing something wrong? If I am please answer with a detailed response because I do need detailed steps to know what I am doing.
Trying to install Windows XP via Boot Camp, I get this error:
I have an external hard drive with enough space to back up my computer, but I don't know what to do after that. Can someone tell me what to back it up with so I can restore it after I format my computer, and how to restore it?
I assume to format the drive I use Disk Utility from my install CD?
I had some problems regarding my Hard Disk in a previous topic, I managed to fix the errors and format the drive. The disc seems ok but there is no OS on it.
And when I boot (in verbose or single user mode) it keeps freezing on:

Now this makes sense to me since the drive is empty but when I enter my Installation disc press ALT or C while booting it just freezes and does nothing.

I got a problem booting from my DVD installation disc. I got a PowerBook G4 (1GB/133mhz) on which I currently run OS X 10.4. However, my mac has started to lag so I want to erase the hard disc and reinstall from scratch, starting with OS X 10.3. Now the problem is this: When I insert the installation disc, it first seems like it reads from the discs (saying: "preparing installation") but then this little device on the screen starts spinning. And this is as far as I ever get. The device doesn't stop spinning.

I know i'll need a KVM but need assurance it will work with all the converters. I mean one for mac, one for windows and one for data to be shared between the OS's? When I try to create 3 partitions on leopard installation, when I start the boot camp assistant, it doesn't work. Or when I create an extra partition inside windows, mac is not able to see it.
I have one program that I will have to run in boot camp. The rest of the time, I would like to run in Parallels. Will I have to install XP twice to do this and thus take up more hard drive?

I burned a DVD with 1x speed but when I tried to boot via DVD (pressing option key) it shows 2 option for DVD, Windows and EFI. I tried both and none worked. The Windows version starts and a DOS menu appears with 2 options which doesn't show what it is and then it freezes. The EFI option freezes imediately on the boot screen.

The disc keeps spinning, but the windows installation screen never appears.

My leopard installation was giving me a lot of headache so I thought of doing a clean install. Now that Snow Leopard had been out for quite sometime and many issues solved; I thought of installing it instead of Leopard. All I did was follow the instructions to install Snow Leopard [the only option with Snow Leopard was that it did an "Archive and Install" kind of thing by default]. It did take a lot of time [1 hour?] and I was finally taken to my desktop. I looked to check if everything was okay. Though there was nothing spectacular about Snow Leopard. I shut the computer down. Today morning I get this and I can't boot.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI am currently on a macbook that I bought in the summer of 2008, and I just decided I wanted to be able to run Windows on my laptop. I found my WindowsXP installation disk, a factory disk, and opened up boot camp to install Windows. I was following instructions from another thread on another computer I have at home. I got through partitioning my disk and got the windowsXP installation ready to begin when I realized I couldn't find my MacOSX disk, and thus wouldn't be able to install the Windows drivers after installing Windows (I was running Mac OS X 10.5.8), so I stopped the installation there and un-partitioned my harddrive. I then ordered Mac OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.3, and I just received the CD today. I installed Snow Leopard, then did the same thing that I did before with boot camp and partitioned my drive. However, this time when I got to the part where I put in my Windows disk, the computer reboots and starts, but the Windows installation won't begin. It just sits at a black screen with a blinking cursor in the top left corner. I've tried giving it over 30 minutes to start but it just won't go. Logically I would assume there's a problem with the disk, but I used this same disk less than a week ago and got halfway through the installation without any problems. Why won't my WindowsXP installer disk boot up?

Now when I turn my macbook on, I have to hold the option key down and select Macintosh HD or nothing happens. I have used the Bootcamp Utility to partition my hdd back to one, but the boot options are still messed up. How do I fix this to automatically boot into OSX?
