MacBook Pro :: Clean Mac OSX Remote Installation?
Jan 8, 2010
Like everyone else, my super drive is bad. Need to clean install Mac OSX Snow Leopard remotely, though I want to do a clean install.Similar to the way Apple has enabled remote OSX Install using a different computers drive for the Macbook Air, I need to enable it on my Macbook Pro. When holding down the option key and booting into the selection menu, there is no option to connect to a network (via the dropdown like the Macbook Air). Does anyone know the terminal command to enable this sort of behavior? I already have the commands to enable remote disc on a macbook pro, which are here (from terminal):
defaults write com.apple.NetworkBrowser EnableODiskBrowsing -bool truedefaults write com.apple.NetworkBrowser ODSSupported -bool trueIn Lehman's terms, I need to be able to connect to my wireless or wired network to utilize a different mac's optical drive from a Macbook Pro (as opposed to an Air, which has this feature enabled). I am almost certain there is a terminal command that will enable it, but have been unable to find the proper documentation.

I have my 15" MacBook Pro, Mid-2010 model, which had Snow Leapord and then from the AppStore I had upgraded the OS to Lion. Now I'd like to have a clean installation of Lion. I have few constraints and have already tried few options but without luck. From the AppStore I downloaded the OS Lion (from Purchases) and I saw a note about create a bootable DVD and have created one. I tried the following...
Problem #1 : My MBP wouldn't boot off the DVD. It just keeps spinning.
Problem #2 : I then tried restarting and then choosing "Options" while coming up to choose the Disk. Again it just spins.
Problem #3 : I chose "Command R" for recovery mode but it again tries to download OS Lion afresh and that's not an option for me right now (I'm not in USA now, but in India. No high bandwidth connection) How can I do a fresh installation of Lion?

I've read many reviews saying that the remote disc installation takes 5-6 hours, so after loading the installation, I thought that I would leave it working through the night...
However the "time left" only showed 1,2 hours
In total it took me no more than 1 hour to get a fresh Mac OSX using Wlan...it's simply amazing in my opinion, I even don't know whether the external drive would have done it better.
So don't be scarde to reinstall it with remote disc guys, or waste money on the drive unless you really need it.

My dvd drive is busted, so I'm attempting to use remote disc to install snow leopard on my macbook pro (running 10.5.5). There doesn't seem to be a clean install option without running the snow leopard disc from boot. Is there any way that I can run the install disc from boot via remote disc so I can run a clean install? I tried restarting my computer and holding down the alt/option key, which showed the only available boot drive as my macbook pro's internal hard drive.

The installer script for OS X 10.5 crashed during the last part of a clean installation on my G5 (see sig.) and left some folders and aliases to folders visible, that I am sure should be invisible. Updated to 10.5.8 same situation. Running DU to repair permissions does not fix this, nor can I set the folders to invisible using Cmnd+I. The system runs just fine, but the folders and aliases listed below should not be visible. Folders Aliases (the folders these point to are also visible).
bin etc
cores tmp
private var
sbin

I purchased a copy of SL that I want to install on my MBA. I know that Leopard can be installed using the remote disk feature since my MBA doesn't have a DVD drive. problem is that I can't find anywhere saying that SL will support that function. Although I did see that the minimum system requirements require a DVD drive, but it doesn't say anything about a remote drive.
I'm sure it would be stupid if it wasn't supported, but then again you can't installed XP without the SuperDrive.

When I try to install Apple Remote Desktop, I get a message that says a more current version is already installed. I look in Applications and see no reference to Remote Desktop.
1) Does Max OS X Lion 10.7.3 come with Remote Desktop installed, as some documentation suggests?
I'm trying to remote from macBook Pro to a windows server via ip address

I've had with my mac in a few years of smooth sailing. I'll take that as a good thing.Anyway, my Mac Mini (PPC, 10.4.11) always just recognized the exact model/native resolution for my display... One day booting up it decided to boot into 800x600 for some reason. When trying to switch back in the system pref the native 1440x900 had DISAPPEARED from the list.

I have just upgraded from a 60GB HD running OS X 10.4.11? to a 250GB drive.
Before changing HDs, I backed up the old HD onto an external FireWire drive using Retrospect Express 6.1.
I made a clean install of 10.5.6 onto the new HD, installed Retrospect Express.
I then restored my entire old HD to a *folder* on my new HD. There is room for it on the external FireWire disk also if that is better.
I expected wrongly to be able to use Migration Assistant to integrate my applications, e-mails, calendar, bookmarks, etc. into 10.5.6 but it did not allow me to select a folder to migrate from (I think it is looking preferably for another Mac attached via FireWire or at least an external disk, but I'm not sure what it's limits are).
I am also now concerned about Migration Assistant losing data (such as filed e-mails) as I have consulted with a tech friend who says it is problematic and I should restore by hand! Can you tell me the most efficient and reliable way to get out of my predicament? I'm crazy busy business-wise and I don't have time to lose wallowing & finding my own way, I can afford the time to do things right though :-) which is why I'm asking.
Obviously I am shut down now, I do not want to start doing "real work" on my computer until all my applications and files are in their proper places.
Applications (Quark, Adobe, Apple), all my Mail accounts, iCal, Fonts, Firefox + extensions & bookmarks are my mission-critical tools.

Question: I already have snow leopard installed on my iMac. But can I still do a CLEAN snow leopard installation onto my imac even though snow leopard is already installed?
I tried it just now like twice but I got the spinning wheel of death. It wouldn't go pass the apple sign and spinning wheel.

I'm looking for a system that can track about 50 MBP's providing both remote wipe as part of an overall security protocol, and also remote screen/desktop for admin purposes. I looked at preyproject.com but it looks like they only do remote wiping/tracking. that I don't want something locked to a single user, it should be centrally managed.

I am trying to follow the following guide to do a triple boot, but I am stuck in Windows 7 installation
triple boot snow leopard, windows 7, & ubuntu
I have done the following:
1. Did a clean installation of OS X Snow Leopard on hard drive (Not yet partitioned the hard drive)
2. Installed rEFIt
I am not sure what the poster means by making sure it works by pressing the option button. I am assuming it means that I will be able to see the options I can choose when I press option? (I do see options to pick either "Hard Drive" or whatever disc in the DVD)
3. Partitioned 30 GB (or was it 40 GB? x.x I forgot sorry) space in Boot Camp Assistant for Windows installation. Chose the option to install Windows later.
4. Inserted OS X Snow Leopard installation disc and boot from there.
5. Opened up the Disk Utility and partitioned a hard drive (called Hard Drive_2) via the Partition section as instructed by the guide. Formatted in MAc OS Extended (Journaled)
So now, in that area I see "Hard Drive", "Hard Drive_2" and "BOOT CAMP" (so I am assuming that is what the poster meant by "3 partitions".
6. Restarted the computer with Windows installation disc.
Problems occur right here:
Problem 1: I do not see anything called "C something" as the poster said. But I do see something called "Boot Camp"
Problem 2: All the partitions that are available says that "Windows 7 can't be installed". So my question is am I supposed to "delete" a specific partition to install it?
I have pictures of the screen which I will upload later if this isn't clear enough.

i would like to be able to remotely access my macbook from anywhere across the internet. but i am looking for something more automatic, than the way i have set it up for my desktop using port forwarding, since i never know where the macbook will be and therefore a given network will already have its router configured and forwarded for my laptop.
i want to have access to file, isight, and screen sharing. i can only assume i need third party software but havent found any.

i just purchased a new MacBook Air and need to install my, also newly purchased, MS Office 2012 software. I have an iMac with the CD inserted and see the MacBook Air has a "Remote Disc" mount point in Finder. What I do not know is how to get the MacBook Air to see the CD in the iMac.
If I am interpreting "remote disc" wrong and would be better off mounting a USB DVD drive

I know the fan will eventually collect a lot of dust.
Do I need to take the bottom of the computer off to clean that? Does that void the warranty?
I don't even know if it is necessary though. Here are my temps. I don't know what they are supposed to be:

The inline remote control in my iPhone earphones is not working anymore on my MacBook. I can adjust the volume but can no longer change the tracks / play or pause. This is on my Mid 2010 13" which was working fine before the upgrade to 10.6.5.I don't think I'm alone with this issue as I've seen a post on this on the Apple discussion boards

while enjoying a beautiful, sunny day here I was outside with my MBA surfing the web. I had a few other apps open at the same time like iTunes, QuickTime and Mail. Safari all of a sudden beach balls and I wait a bit until I try doing a force quit on it. After a while I still have no response and I cannot close it. So, I hold my breath while forcing a shutdown with the power button. To make a long story short, I ended up with the flashing question mark on the gray screen. Now I'm doing a remote reinstall from my MBP!
