I recently got a Macbook pro OS X Lion and for the past few months have had problems with trying to run movies on Quicktime 10.1. My videos files are usually .AVI but when I try to click on it quick time opens and then tells me that it can't read the file. I've search the internet for answer and have tried a lot of different solutions that others have had success on (including updating Perian and trying to convert the .AVI file to .MOV) yet I still have had no such luck.

Today I discovered that QTX does not play divx files anymore on my macbook even though I have perian installed. Whenever I try to play a divx file, a pop up appears saying I need to install QT7
What I already tried is:repair permissions;uninstall and reinstall perian;create another user-->same issue;get rid of QTX caches and preferences;restart the machine

I am starting a new thread because I am unable to play mov files in QuickTime X. This includes previously downloaded movie trailers from apple, mov files downloaded in itunes, mov files filmed on my iPhone or even files created from hd camcorder files. I am alo unable to play embedded QuickTime movies on the apple homepage, or play move trailers such as: [URL]Neither does the "download" option work. However if I force the files to play with QuickTime 7 or vlc, they play fine. If I use Firefox the embedded videos play ok, but in the example of trying to download the movie trailers still doesn't work.

I used handbrake to rip a DVD to an external hard drive on my old MacBook running Tiger. Handbrake gave it a .mp4 extension. When I try to play it, either on my old MacBook running Tiger or on my Air running Lion, an error message says that 'QuickTime Player can't open "DVD_VIDEO.mp4 because the movie's file format isn't recognised.' A 'tell me more' button directs to this page [URL] which annoyingly assures me that mp4 format is suported!
Is this something to do with ripping the DVD on an old Tiger compatible version of handbrake...?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have imac 24. There is a small window that popped up and says,"Additional software is required for quicktime to playback this media. It may be available from the quicktime components page. Make sure your internet connection is active, then click the continue button to check for the software."The problem is is that I am not trying to use quicktime and nor is it running currently AND when the cursor is over the window it just spins the color pin wheel. This window will not go away. I cannot drag it, close it or press continue on it. I have cleared all cookies, cache and reset safari and nothing works. I restart my computer and it is gone for maybe a few minutes and then it reappears .
View 4 Replies View RelatedI need to distinguish between MP4 and MOV files without using the extension .mov or .mp4.
If I use FTYP major_brand = 'qt ' as the distinguishing factor, is that sufficient? Or do I need some information from compatible_brands as well?
Can we have mov files where major_brand != 'qt ', Ex If 'qt ' is one of the compatible_brands but not major_brand: would we call it a valid mov file?
I've a brand new Macbook Pro with most updated Quicktime on it plus just downloaded Perian - and still it won't let me open up a dang simple m4v.

I am having trouble with email attachments coming into AOL on my imac from one sender. No such problem with same attachments on my pc....

I have several HD videos from my Sony NEX-3 camera that will not play very well from within iMovie. They freeze up, or run in slow motion while the sound track continues without any problem. I've seen other related comments on this forum, but no one has suggested a fix yet. I can play my clips just fine from the finder menu using "Quick Look". Other videos from the same camera work, what has changed?

I have close to a hundred music files that won't play, they have no file ending (.*). They were transferred from a now formatted computer (no way to recover). I have no idea how to get them to work. If I give them an AAC ending RealPlayer will give me the following information but it won't play them. Since it tells me the length of the song it must somehow recognize it.
