Applications :: Managing ITunes On External Drive?

Dec 28, 2010

Currently I have my itunes library on an external hard drive that is connected to my AEBS, I have a few things I need to resolve. My external drive is not always on so whenever I go to itunes and download a new tune my library path automagically changes to the default path on my MAC, thus leaving the new downloaded tune on my MAC and not on the external drive! I do not have the space on my MAC to hold my entire itunes library. How can I make sure that my external is always on? I have a mac mini I could hook it up to instead of having it on my AEBS ,would that be a better solution?

Also I have all MAC products (MBP, ipad, iphone4 x2, MAC Mini, Apple TV 2) in the house and I want to make sure that they all can share the itunes library. You guys/gals with large libraries that have multiple devices sharing one itunes library how do you manage your tunes?

Applications :: Installing ITunes On External Hard Drive / Playing Music From External Hdd?

Aug 19, 2007

In other words... I have moved my music library to the external hard drive, as per an earlier thread I read here on the forums. It worked like quite well. Now that it is working perfectly, I am having a hard time leaving well enough alone. It is never a good idea for me to think too much...Can itunes be installed and run on/from an external hard drive? If so, how?

MacBook Pro :: Managing A MBP With SSD And External Drives For Data?

May 9, 2010

Managing a MBP with SSD and external drives for data?

Its come to the point of upgrading my 2007 MBP 2.4 to a new i7 that I'm thinking of ordering it with a SSD drive. Its the biggest 'hit' to increase performance it seems. Problem is the size of the SSD drives for cost. I can justify the 256GB model but not $1300 for 500GB which would be ideal, and even if I wait 6 months or so to get a 500GB I don't see the price coming down all that much. So...

Let say I order an APPLE SSD in my MBP and use it for a boot drive and some files. How do I configure/set-up the external drive to read its files for Aperture, iTunes, documents.... Thinking now is that I would use a WD 2TB external drive in RAID so I have the files on one 1TB and auto back-up on the other 1TB in one inclosure, and another 1TB drive for Time Machine.

This kind of limits my portability, so I'm also thinking I'd also have a portable larger HD to take with me when I need it. How do I sync the files I'm working on and adding to on one external drive with the other (as easy as possible)?

I may be thinking this all wrong, so any suggestions besides just the 'how to?'

OS X :: Managing Tv Shows Metadata In Itunes?

Dec 16, 2010

I'am having a difficult time managing TV Show metadata in iTunes. I have over 100 episodes of a single show. I selected all of the episodes and went to "get info" and set the show's name. That was easy enough, but the problem is numbering the episodes in iTunes. I have to go one by one. I guess there is no auto numbering. Is there any easier way?

ITunes :: Managing Music Libraries Between Two Computers?

Jun 30, 2012

I have ordered a new Retina MBP to replace my early 2008 MBP, and have been contemplating how to manage my music libraries between both computers. My music library is about 60GB, and I don't want to keep it all on my rMBP (to save space with only 256GB available). My 2008 MBP will serve as a repository for all of my music, and regular Time Machine backups will be carried out. I also have a small, portable external drive which will also have all of my music (copied iTunes folder). The goal here is to have the music libraries on my old MBP and this external drive to be identical, for backup reasons as well as to be able to transfer music to my new rMBP when necessary. To do this, I reasoned out the following method:

-Obtain new music on rMBP

-Transfer folder of respective album(s) to copied iTunes folder in external HD

-Connect external HD to old MBP

-Open music files from external HD (they'll copy into both the iTunes library and the iTunes media folder on the old MBP)

-Verify that the music files are in both places

I can also obrain new music on the old MBP and then transfer it to the external HD. This seems like somewhat of a cumbersome manner to go about this (first world problems, I know). Does anybody have any suggestions as to how to streamline, or perhaps even automate this process? I was trying to think of a way I could utilize the "Automatically Add to iTunes" folder, but to no avail.  Again, my primary goals are as follows:

-To have identical music libraries on my old MBP and the external HD

-To have only a small, can't-do-without-it music library on my rMBP; I could tranfer music over as necessary or play it using the library on the external HD.

Applications :: Copying ITunes Library From One External Drive To Another?

Dec 18, 2006

I want to copy my iTunes library from one external drive (currently connected to an iBook) to a 2nd external drive (connected to an eMac). The library is almost 60GB and so can not fit on either machine's hard drive.

The music currently plays through the iBook from the first external drive.

I want to be able to play the same music on the eMac (through the 2nd external drive).

Which is the best way to go about this?

Should I:

a) Connect the 1st external drive to the eMac and manually drag and drop the music from there to the 2nd external drive, or

b)Use Silverkeeper Basckup and do a backup of the Music folder in the 1st drive to the 2nd drive, after connecting the 1st to the eMac?

or is there not much difference in doing either? Or is there a more efficient option using iTunes?

Applications :: How To Import ITunes Library On External Drive ?

Nov 1, 2008

I just bought a MacBook Pro. I have my iTunes library on an external firewire HDD. I want to keep it there, but have iTunes on my new Mac access it. However, even though I have put the path to that drive in iTunes Preferences, the songs there don't show up in iTunes.

The new Mac is authorised, and I have bought a song on the iTunes store, which was saved to the external drive.

So what do I need to do? Do I get one of the library files copied over from the old machine (also a Mac)?

Applications :: Adding Second External Hard Drive In ITunes

Dec 6, 2008

I'm on Tiger 10.4.11, and the latest iTunes. I have an external hard drive on which I keep all my music files, managed by iTunes. I'm running out of room on that drive. At some point, it is not practical to keep increasing the size of the drive, as the reliability goes down. I'd like to keep my drives to 1TB or so. So, the other solution is to add a second external hard drive, where all new music files can go to. How to do it, so iTunes doesn't freak out? Here's what I'm thinking - could you guys help make it work?

I thought to add the second drive and then in iTunes preferences -->Advanced---> iTunes Music folder location CHANGE to the NEW drive. That way, I'd have iTunes copy all new music to the NEW DRIVE. Question: Now, how do I go about having iTunes reference files on the FIRST drive, so that the Library is up to date, and when I select something to play from the FIRST drive, iTunes knows how to find it?

Applications :: ITunes And External Hard Drive Nightmare

Sep 25, 2009

First I am really sorry if this has been brought up a lot but I am seriousply stuck and have no idea what to do and I know this is Mac stuff but I thought it would be better then anywhere else. I have looked on Apple.com and nothing has been able to help. Well here it is I am having trouble trying to get my music from my external Hard Drive.

So my old laptop took a crap on me. I took it in and they told me it would cost more to fix it then to just by a whole new one so I did just that. Well before the company gave me back my old laptop they asked if I wanted all my files backed up onto a external Hard Drive that way I don't have to fuss with it later. So I went out that day and bought a "My Book" External Hard Drive. They did it and well now I am trying to get my iTunes music from that and there isn't any folders of music when I open up the iTunes folder all I have is

-Album Artwork (File Folder)
-Mobile Applications (File Folder)
-Previous iTunes Libraries (File Folder)
-iTunes Library (iTunes Database File
-iTunes Music Library (XML Document)

I have tried dragging them in (When I do that a "UB" is under the iTunes symbol) , I have tried adding File, Adding Folder and nothing happens... it shows nothing in there. Then when I click on them to open all it does is open iTunes and nothing happens. I have tried downloading a couple of programs to get the music off my iPod but they all said there is no iPod connected when it was. I have also tried to unistall iTunes and try and go into the iPod and see if I can get it that way and there wasn't anything in there beside the folders for contacts, photos etc. (Still nothing even in those folders) Please I don't know what else to do and I can't just go onto that old laptop and do an easy transfer since the motherboard went out on it. Is there any hope at all or am I stuck with an unusable iTunes and iPod?

Aug 31, 2010

I have roughly a 35gb iTunes library saved to my external hard drive. Initially, I had the files on my internal, but copied the iTunes folder (like Apple's web site told me to do), and went into preferences and pointed the library to my external. After that, I deleted the files from my internal, and voila, everything was working perfectly.

However, I turned my computer off, and the next day plugged my external in, and opened iTunes, but there was no library, just the iTunes intro screen.

Applications :: Using Itunes For Listening To Music Off External Hard Drive On MBP?

Jan 14, 2011

So I checked the threads on here and tried multiple ways and cant figure this out.

I have a MBP, itunes 10.1.1, and a western digital passport essential.

I loaded pictures and my old itunes library off a HP pavilion desktop.

On my Mac, when I try and open my external hard drive off the desktop and click my itunes library file I stored from my old HP it simply wont open. I right click it and click open with itunes and the file icon fades off my screen very quickly like its trying to import it but wont. I have tried dragging it and holding option when opening itunes, which actually does display the playlist but only with explanation points because the files cannot be found.

I just want to be able to plug my external in and listen to my playlist I have stored on the western digital, on my mac book without erasing my current itunes playlist on my MBP.

Jan 28, 2008

I recently moved my music library to an external library by changing the pathway in Edit/Preferences/Advanced and then consolidating the library. Everything worked for a while but now when I open itunes it is not able to find all the files. Bizarrely for a lot of albums it can find one or two of the songs but the rest all get the "Unable to locate original music file" error message. The music is all there on the hard drive but I don't want to have to manually locate each one. Does anyone know what is causing this or have a script to locate the rest of the music automatically?

Applications :: Adding To An Existing Itunes Folder On External Hard Drive?

Jan 15, 2009

Okay here's the thing: I (not so long ago) copied my entire itunes library to my external hard drive. Now I have updated my itunes library on my powerbook, and want to make sure that I back up the new songs/albums I have. The problem with this is that I have always found that when I drag the itunes folder from my powerbook to the itunes folder on my external drive, it asks to 'replace the itunes music folder'. I don't want this as there are some albums that I have stored in my folder but not on my itunes library and still want to keep them stored.

Is there any way that I could just keep adding to the 'existing' itunes folder on my external drive?

Applications :: Wirelessly Accessing ITunes Library On An External Hard Drive

Dec 9, 2009

My music and video library, totaling about 1.5 TB, is stored on an external USB hard drive. When I want to listen to something, I copy it over to my MacBook Pro (15" late 2009, 500GB hard drive) using iTunes. My home stereo is connected to an AirPort Express for audio streaming.

I can't really afford a TimeCapsule or an AirPort Extreme Base Station, either of which would seem to offer the most elegant way to remotely access my media library over WiFi (true?). Yesterday I found a Belkin Wireless N+ router at Costco for $69 that includes a USB storage port, and am wondering if it would do the same job for a quarter of the cost. Here are my questions:

1) Could I access my media drive wirelessly from my MBP using the Belkin N+ router? Is there another (better?) solution that I am missing?

2) Can I use iTunes to manage my library on the external hard drive, while also maintaining a smaller collection of audio files locally on the MBP's hard drive?

I'm not the only one in this situation! It seems Drobos and other RAID or NAS solutions are quite costly ... more so than an Airport Extreme.

The first time, I mistakenly created an empty "iTunes" folder and put an "iTunes music" folder inside, where i proceeded to copy the files. I had already set the defult location of the library to my F: drive, my external hard drive. However, the original location of the files stayed in iTunes. Again, following the advice of the iTunes program, I deleted the original folders, and I dragged the new iTunes music folder into the window - at which point i had TWO copies of each file - the first one with an exclamation beside it (original file missing) and the second being my new copies.
