Hardware :: WD World Edition NAS - Good For ITunes / IPhoto Server?
Apr 5, 2009
I am planning on investing in a WD NAS so I can have all the family music and pictures centralized in one place. Is it worthy the investment considering the speed and sharing possibility? I have a regular 1TB and I am considering buying one just for the media. Does anybody here is already using it? I don't see often msgs about sharing the iPhoto Library. Is that possible at all?
I just got a Western Digital My Book World Edition II 2TB Hard Drive and I'm trying to get it all set up. I'm having some problems. 1. I wanted it to back up my iTunes library which is on a external hd. I cant figure out how to get it to do that. 2. I'd like to have my iTunes music, tv shows, and videos able to be played on my PS3.
I just got myself a WD My Book World Edition II 1TB ethernet HD. I can connect to it fine from my MacBook, but on my G5 its a different story. I see the drive on the Network. I then double click on it and get the prompt for the usergroup, username and password, type in the info and I get a error saying it can't see it. What am I missing? OS is 10.4.9 on G5 and 10.4.10 on MacBook.
Information: Power Mac G5 Mac OS X (10.4.9) Dual 2.0 GHz
Just got a WD My Book World Edition II 2TB. I would like to reformat this drive specifically for mac. It's sole purpose is to be used with Time Machine.
I currently have the drive connected to my IMAC via ethernet. Finder shows the external HD listed under Shared as MyBookWorld and another one as MyBookWorld-Backup. Time Machine preferences/select disk shows this drive as "WD_Backup on MyBookWorld-Backup".
Using DiskUtility.app the drive DOES NOT show up!
Should I send this drive back from where I ordered? Anyone have any experience with this drive? Should I even bother to reformat?
I have NOT installed the software that came with the drive? Why should I?
I cant get anything to work on my Western Digital My Book World Edition ii. I have it plugged in via ethernet to the back of my Airport Extreme. I'm trying to put all of my iTunes library on it so that my media can be played on my PS3 and other computers on my network.
I am a small business owner (professional service company) considering the switch to mac from the pc environment.I have multiple professionals in my office and we utilize a server which authorizes different users to log in to different folders. The server also stores our customer database which each of our users logs into in order to work. Our server also provides each of the connected computers in our office with access to the internet. It has a firewall which helps to limit security issues. We have outlook as our mail and the e-mail is stored on our server. How would I replicate all of this (or better yet, improve upon it) in the world of mac?
How much RAM should I stuff in an eMac G4 (1Ghz I believe) to get acceptable performance as both a low-duty File Server and as an iTunes/iPhoto/iMovie '06 Machine? Im currently having this capacity filled by 2 machines: iTunes/iPhoto by a G4/450 and iMovie HD on my G4/1.67 . I know Ill take a slight performance hit, but if it means my PowerBook can go back to being a laptop, its worth it.
I am looking for a good FTP client. I have tried several and none give m what i need. I would like the client to be slip in half, one side to brows the server im connected to and the other to browse my computer. then all i have to do is drag it to the other side to DL it or UL it.There has to be one out there, I have looked but cant find one.
What's a good FTP program for OS X that is really fast and transfer like 10 files simultaneously? I tried that DUCK FTP and it honestly sucked... And panic or w/e. Also how do I stop .ds_store files from being made on server?
The old Mini worked fine with my Westinghouse 24" LCD monitor (HDMI input -connected to Mini via DVI->HDMI cable). The new Mini Server 2010 has HDMI out, so I used a straight-through HDMI cable. The display looks terrible! All of the fonts appear to have a 'shadow' next to them - almost like an old analog VGA with 'interference'.Thinking it could be the cable, I went back to my old Mini's DVI->HDMI cable (and used the new Mini's HDMI->DVI adapter to connect to it). Same results. The Westinghouse monitor's native resolution is 1920x1200. The Mac says that it's configured for 1920x1200.
For two days I've been unable to download music. It keeps asking me to Sign in to view billing information even though I'm already signed in. Then it does it again. And again, and again...
I'm in charge of finding music for a special occasion and this will create big problems for me if I can't get it in time.
iPhoto 11 (9.2.1) can't use iCloud Mail smtp server for email. "The email server didn't recognise username/password combination". Both appear correct in preferences/accounts. Mail sends and receives messages perfectly.
I have a 2011 intel iMac. It is the (supposedly) powerful 3.1ghz i5, and i upgraded the RAM to 12 Gig. Before buying this machine I had a 2008 iMac and LOVED it, it was superb. But this machine is SLOWER than that one was?! I am running OSX lion, iLife 09 and iWork 11. I am having a nightmare with this machine, it hands constantly, i only have a few apps open and still it can take 5-10 seconds (beachballing) for finder to draw my files when i open a folder. This can't be right. I have reloaded the entire machine from scratch twice by cloning files off and then MANUALLY rebuilding it (not using Migrate Assistant to ensure to i was not bringing any bad data or bugs across from old installation or old machine). It is slow as a dog, way slower than my old iMac which had a mere 2 Gig of Ram! If i open more than 10 browser tabs in Safari it goes so slow I can't use the internet. The machine crashes at least twice a week and just hands so I have to force shutdown, and my latest error is iPhoto just lost ALL my photos, 5 years worth and gives the error "Request to server failed" but says nothing else of any use. I am hoping to recover them with TimeMachine but wait and see on that score as nothing seems to be right with this machine so no doubt TM will play up as well.
I have VMWare Fusion installed, latest version. It does seem slower when running that, but it still crashed and plays up when that is not running so I am sure that is not the source of any problems, it just makes them a bit worse due to processor usage. Is it possible to get an iMac diagnostically checked (hardware) at an Apple store? It is still under warranty this machine, but I can't drop it off at a store without wiping all my data (clone) to external drive, because I have confidential information stored on it which I can't leave on if the machine leaves my office. I struggled to afford to buy this machine, and thought it would sky rocket my performance and speed after my old machine started to get slow due to age, but even at its worst it was never this bad. I am now a very very disappointed Apple lover, ex-lover?! One final point I should mention, I upgraded the RAM myself, using proper stuff from Crucial. I read that it didn't matter what order the RAM cards were fitted in, is that true or should I try moving them around?

This has probably already been asked before, but I can't find if it supports the 2006 Mac Pro models? Wait nevermind. It says that it supports 2008 and 2009 on Apple's website. Darn! I wonder if it will work anyway? If someone tries it please let me know.
So, with new UMBP, i saw the RAM is now expandable up to 8 gigs. Seeing as how it is practically the same hardware as the UMB, is the UMB expandable to 8 gigs??? I believe officially, they were only supported to 4, but if 8 is possible, I would love to get 8. Any thoughts/concrete knowledge on this topic?
I don't know if this will work but would it be possible to use the EFI firmware from the GT8800 and flash it onto the GTX285 mac Edition? or something? to make it work on the Macpro 1,1 (2006-2007 Mac Pro Users)
When Windows 7 arrives on October 22, assuming you're updating to it: Which edition best fits your needs? I'm a power user, so Windows 7 Ultimate is the obvious best fit for me.
The 8800GT in my Mac Pro 1,1 just died. I'm back up with the 7300 for now.
Can I adapt the EVGA's GeForce GTX 285 Mac Edition for use? It comes with the cables, and I more than willing to pay the extra $$$ to save myself hunting around for parts.
I'm also a bit confused about the 4870 upgrade. Does the Apple version work out of the box on my 1,1? If so, maybe that's the way to go for now?
Im specifically looking for folks using a the Apple 4870 512Mb , any PC 4870, or a 4890 (Hell let me know if you are using the GTX 285 Mac edition also) in combination with a 30" monitor.
Im looking at this setup and I play WoW frequently , but that is the ONLY game I play..

Does anyone know how Boot camp and pre-activated copies of WIndows Xp are? DO the two mix well?
At my school we can buy these copies called Win XP sp2 Student edition since were students in a special program. This copy is supposed to be used to teach us the installation process of windows Xp on PCS but since i was able to buy one now i was wondering if it will work on my iMac.
Has anyone tried connecting a WD My Book Studio Edition external hard drive to one computer via USB and to another computer via FireWire 800 simultaneously?
What are the chances that both computers would be able to access the drive simultaneously?
