PowerPC :: IMac G5 Intermittent Shut Down?

Nov 13, 2006

I have one of the 20" iMac G5's covered by the warranty extension for the intermittent shutdown problem. The problem is that I am out of the country, and where I am has very unreliable Apple service. It would be gone for weeks and weeks. I am considering flying back home to get my computer repaired. The computer shuts down multiple times a day without warning.

What are the chances I can find an AASP in the DC area who can do the repair in a day or two. I have read that the repair is only a power supply swap and can be done in 15 minutes. What do y'all think?

My other option is to just buy a new computer and worry about repairing this one in a year or two, which is a $2,000 hassle.

PowerPC :: Ambient Light G5 2.0 Imac Shut Off?

Oct 28, 2009

So I've done all I can find on the internet on helping my broken computer. It used to have the noisy fan issue and then it would shut off. Now after being off for 12 hours, it may shut off in 2 minutes, maybe in 30. I have reset the SMU by unplugging for 10 seconds and then plugging in while simultaneously holding the power button, then turning it on. Ive also reset the PRAM, but it still seems to shut off. Is it a bad power supply? I dont ever hear the fans blowing hard anymore.

If anyone has basic things to do, I'm all ears. I know last step is probably just reinstall OSX.

I'm on 10.4 right now.

PowerPC :: Intermittent Wireless Connection On G4

May 24, 2007

We have had a little powerbook G4 since about a year now. Such a great little stable machine that we have never had any problems with it. As a consequence, we still know little about it (usually I learn about machines/software by running into problems). Now, the wireless starts working intermittently. Sometimes it works fine and at other times it will not even indicate that our home network is present (whereas we have two other laptops (Win XP) that show that the network is active and has excellent strength). So at these times we are unable to re-connect. This started about two weeks ago and starts to get worse (it will more often not find it). Restarting does not work, but sometimes, when trying again the next day or a couple of hours later, it will work again. Should we just go ahead and get a new wireless card for the p-book?

PowerPC :: G5 Intermittent Blank Screen On Boot Up

IMac (Intel) :: Intermittent Blue Squares That Crashes System

Aug 26, 2014

I'm running a late 2009 iMac, 2.8 GHz Intel Core i7 with 8 GB memory with 27 inch ATI Radeon HD 4850 512 graphics card running 10.9.4 OSX.

I will get spontaneous crash of the system that causes small blue squares over the entire screen. The problem will resolve after 1-2 restarts. I ran the system diagnostic disk and found no problems on the long and short versions. It is an intermittent problem as the display and system are running fine now but daily will have the crash occur. Once the spots are present the computer will be frozen with no response to keys or mouse.

Info:
iMac (27-inch Late 2009), OS X Mavericks (10.9.4)

PowerPC :: Mac G5 Won't Shut Down

Apr 2, 2007

My friend is using a Power Mac G5 and it will not shut down. When shut down is selected, it gets to a blue screen with the rotating progress wheel, or whatever, that is seen on start up. It will stick to this screen until the computer is forced off by holding down the power button. Also, occasionally, when the computer is powered on, the fan runs at full speed and nothing happens until it is forced off and turned on again. I'm guessing these two issues might be related. Any suggestions on what to do? We have tried unplugging all USB devices.

PowerPC :: Unable To Shut It Down

I have a PowerMac G4 that isn't saving the settings when I shut the computer down. I think it might be the battery on the mobo, but I'm not totally sure. does anyone know of any other reason why it would do that or confirm my suspicions?

PowerPC :: G4 Wants To Shut Down After Sleeping?

Mar 25, 2008

My aging G4 Quicksilver is still very operable yet have had mysterious problems with mouse tracking, USB ports not being recognized and now the machine wants to shut off after being asleep for some time. Someone suggested that it could be a voltage regulation problem, but service personnel have not been able to duplicate the problem with a bench test. In short, when I have a startup problem (the startup button will start to glow, at startup and then the light goes out and the machine fails to boot) or if I find the machine turned off after I left it to sleep at night or a few hours during the day, I will open the case and shut it. This little nudge seems to be a temperary fix. Nervous it does make me that my time is short with this trusty box.

PowerPC :: G4 Locked Up - Cannot Restart After Shut Down

Jan 26, 2009

My PowerBook G4 15" alu 1.25 ghz locked up out of nowhere the other night (while only running firefox). Couldn't even force quit, so after a long wait I manually shut it down. Then I couldn't get it going again. I pulled the battery, let it sit overnight, and then it started up, only to freeze up again in 30 minutes. Same routine yesterday (though it lasted an hour or so).

I live in Germany and the only Apple store is hours away. And of course my Apple Care is expired. I've zapped the PRAM, reset the PMU, ran first aid on disk utilities (everything came back OK), but I'm freaking out. This thing is seriously important to me, and I can't afford to replace it. I've read plenty of speculation that it could be the logic board, or that it's locking up from overheating, or maybe the hard drive is going bad (though the tests come back OK).

PowerPC :: Not Starting Up - Automatically Shut Off?

Sep 14, 2009

My powerbook will not start up all the way. It suddenly went off yesterday and did not give any noticeable warning. I left it alone after trying to start it up several times. I tried again today and had the same problem. I will here the motor for a few seconds and then nothing. Also, it did come on twice, went off both times when titled the entire laptop up. So, if I tilt it at anytime it automatically shut off.

PowerPC :: Powerbook Sleeps When You Shut The Screen?

Jul 18, 2005

With my Powerbook, whenever I shut the screen the computer goes to sleep. I was under the impression that (unlike the ibook) this is not supposed to happen? Is there a way to set the powerbook so that it only goes to sleep when i explicitly tell it to (i.e. the option in the Apple menu), so that for example when I shut the screen I can still have it hooked up to external speakers/TV/the network?

PowerPC :: Ibook Shut Off After Re-installing OS X Now Won't Turn On?

Jan 16, 2009

I bought an ibook a little while ago because I wanted a small, simple notebook and I love my home iMac. I found one for a good price on eBay and when it arrived everything seemed ok. I wanted to re-install the OS and set everything to my specifications because I was having a little trouble with some of the apps. Anyway, I went through the lengthy re-install and just as it finished counting down the seconds to completion, it shut down. I thought it might be in sleep mode because the little white light was on, so I hit a key and the light went off but nothing happened. Nothing on the screen, no HD noise, nothing. I'm at a loss because I really don't know much at all about hardware or software, which is why I liked the user-friendly Mac so much. The only thing that tells me it's getting power is the little green light at the power connector. I tried a PMU reset (there's no reset button on my model so it was a button combo of shift-ctrl-option-power I think) but that didn't do anything.

OS X :: Cannot Shut Down IMac

Jan 26, 2010

I was unsure where to post this as it could be either OSX or hardware that is the problem. I am currently unable to shutdown my 2008 Alu iMac. Everytime I shut it down, it restarts instead.

After a little bit of searching the forums/google, I understand that this may be something to do with a driver or application that is refusing to close properly - but have no idea how to try and identify what may be causing it.

I had it scheduled to shut down at 12:30am, and I was already asleep. I woke up about 3am to get a glass of water and I checked my iMac and I was able to wake it up. What am I doing wrong, why won't it auto shut down?

IMac Freezes When Do A Shut Down

Mar 23, 2012

My iMac won't shut down completely any more.It gets to a white screen and then freezes, and I have to hold down the power button to get it to shut down.I have also been getting intermittent kernel panics, maybe one every 3 or 4 days.I went through all of the troubleshooting steps to try and figure out the cause, with no luck. Did a new install of Lion and everything seemed OK for a few days, and then started having problems with programs not responding, not being able to shut down, and now getting kernel panics again.Considering completly formatting the drive and starting fresh with everything, but not sure if that would solve the problem either.

IMac :: Option To Shut Off The Screen?

Nov 17, 2009

I know this has been discussed before, but I cannot stand that there is no option to shut off the screen. I know the Shift-ctrl-eject (not sure if I got this right, I'm at work now) works to turn off the screen, but I'm facing another issue.

At night, I frequently record shows on Eye-TV and export them to iPhone, so I can watch them during the morning commute. When the show begins, iMac's screen wakes up. When the export to iTunes begins, the screen wakes up. I tried few utilities where the brightness dims 100%, but it's not the same as turning it completely off.

Has anyone found a solution where you can turn off the display completely? Since my iMac is in my bedroom, this is a huge problem for me. I miss my Mac Mini....

OS X :: Programs Keep Hanging And Imac Won't Shut Down?

Feb 2, 2010

My Intel-based imac keeps hanging my programs like Word and Excel, Chrome, Firefox, etc. I force quit, then try to re-start, but get spinning wheel. I try to shut down and desktop clears, but won't actually shut down unless I push the button. It's doing it every day, almost every time I go to use any of my core programs.

I got a RAM upgrade, and an OWC Mercury Elite Pro HD to take the back ups.

Oh - I also record a moderate amount of music in Garage Band - could this be clogging up everything?

Desktops :: Intel Imac Will Not Sleep Or Shut Down?

Apr 8, 2010

I have an Intel Imac G5 2.66 gHz 2 core duo running 10.6.3. I am unable to get it shut down or sleep. Choosing either results in the display blacking out, the fans run for about 1 second and then everything come back on as if nothing has happened. I've reset the Pram and Vram, disconnected all USB and Firewire devices, tried it with and without file sharing and Airport operating. A 'hard' shutdown with the power button works fine. I have checked for any firmware updates but mine is fine. This happened once before and clearing out some files from deleted apps cured the problem but it's back now.

IMac :: No Shut Down / Restart Or Logout Users

Nov 12, 2010

I often have an issue where my iMac won't shut down, restart or logout users. Basically, when I click Shut Down or Restart, the desktop icons disappear as if the computer's getting ready to shut down (the desktop wallpaper remains) and it just sits there and won't shut down. I have to hold down the power button on the back of the computer in order to get the computer to shut off. This often happens when I try to logout a user. I'd say this happens about 2/3 to 3/4 of my attempts to shut down or logout a user.

OS X :: IMac 10.5.7 - Frozen On Restart - Forced Shut Down

May 13, 2009

I downloaded Mac OS X 10.5.7 from the Apple website rather than using Software Update only to save time. I used Software Update to get 10.5.7 on my MacBook Pro and it took 35 minutes to download the package. Using the Apple website for my iMac, the download took about 15 minutes.

I then began the installation of 10.5.7 on the iMac. Everything went fine until it was time to restart. The computer froze on restart. I had to hold down the power button to turn off the iMac. Then I started it up and it began to load for quite a while (normal after an update). Then I logged in and went to "About This Mac" and it read that I had Mac OS X 10.5.7.

Obviously, this is an unorthodox way of updating. But am I safe with this method? Was it just a minor glitch?

IMac :: Waking From Sleep Or Restarting After Shut Down

Nov 15, 2009

My 24in iMac is waking from sleep after about 5 seconds every time, as well as restarting itself after I shut down. This problem started early yesterday evening, and so I did the usual: resetting the SMC/PRAM/NVRAM with no luck. I checked console for messages and found lots of references to imagneto_user_agent (I'd installed iMagneto shortly before and then deleted it as it didn't seem to be working properly). With some help from another user I managed to delete all the hidden/locked folders and files connected with this app using a combination of Trash It and fiddling in Terminal.
