OS X V10.7 Lion :: Can Never Exit Mail So Cannot Shut Down IMac
Jun 8, 2012
I can never exit mail and then I can't shut my computer. Then I have to press the button in the back of the imac but when I turn it back on mail is still on.

I wanted to get started quickly so I put Mac Mail into "Classic" mode. Can't remember how but i think i was asked in a modal dialogue if I wanted to. Been through every Menu item and the Help and can't find any refernece to 3 column view except that it exists. I'm finding Lion a bit rough around the edges even though I'm on 10.7.4. The help is cursory like I said no reference to 3-column except how great it is and can't find a manual for Mac Mail at apple.com.

I recently bought an iMac and I have noticed within the past week that I have had to force the mail program to shut down. Otherwise if I don't force the mail program to shut down the OS will not let me put the iMac to sleep or to shut down.

Whenever I need to shut my computer down from the apple menu it hangs. It does the same thing whenever I try to restart it. It's annoying. The only way I can get results is to physically shut it off.

I have a new imac 3.4ghz - i7 with 16gbs ram that won't shut down unless I hold in the power button. I checked the Console logs but that did not give me any indication of what might be hanging it up. I also, have a Macbook Pro running 10.6.8 and it has no trouble powering down. Â
I am running AVID Symphony which is not qualified for 10.7.4 yet so I am not going to do the update yet. Â

Is this an indication that some hardware item is needing replacing? After a shut-down I'm having to keep the power button depressed for probably up to a minute before the system comes to life.

I have an iMac 1st Gen i5 Quad-Core with two user accounts and since the 10.7.3 update I cannot get the computer to restart or shutdown properly. It seems to happen when both users have been signed on. I log out on both accounts, shutdown (or restart) and it still hangs up. If I use just one account, it's hit and miss. No applications are hanging in the force quit menu.

iMac (27-inch Mid 2011), Mac OS X (10.7.3) (recentrly restarted as I thought it's going to solve my problem)Mail Version 5.2 (1257) (no activity running)No antivirus software Steps to reproduce:
1. Go to Apple icon in menu bar
2. Choose Shut Down or Restart (ticking the Reopen windows when logging back - this is actually the point, so manually force quitting every time cannot be the solution) - some of the applications will start closing and sooner or later I get the following error message: "You haven't been logged out because the application Mail failed to quit. To try logging out again, quit Mail and choose Apple menu > Log Out. To suit an unresponsive application, choose Apple menu > Force Quit (or press Command-Option-Esc.)" Currently I used the workaround to Force Quit Mail and then it works, even if I restart Mail before restarting or shutting down.Â

On my iPhone and iPad mail app, which is sourcing from my Gmail, 'read' mail is changed to read mail (from unread) status on across iPad and iPhone mail application platforms. But not for IMac using Lion.

This morning, I was in mail (I think I was in the midst of a draft which I did not care to save) and realized that I was late so I tried closing Mail using command q. Well, I get the desktop but I can't logout. When I hit the mail icon, it won't even open up my mail to do file, close. So I'm in limbo because I'm not able to shut down.

I am running Mac OSX 10.7.3 and I recently been having issues shutting down my computer with mail running. Sometimes it takes 2-3 mins for it to shut mail down and other times it says it couldn't shut down because of the mail app. Is there anything I can do short of reinstalling Lion?

I have an iMac with Lion 10.7.3, a u-verse email account and Mail V 5.2. Since I got the computer which was about 2 months ago, I haven't been able to get a "new" mail notification on new emails. It has notified me but very few times. Why is that? I thought it had to do with me having my email also setup on my bb phone but I didn't have that problem when I was using Tiger on my old Powerbook computer. I don't open or even check my email on my phone and still I don't get the "new mail" notification. Is Mail broken?

I am having a problem with rules in Mail (OS X Lion 10.7.3). The action rules I make will not stick. We use an Exchange mail server. I want my selected messages to be:
1. Moved to a local (on my Mac) mail folder.
2. Copied to a folder on the Exchange server.
That way I will have a local permanent archive of my mail, and also be able to see recent messages on all my devices (home Mac, iPad). The problem is that after quitting and restarting Mail, the actions get changed so they act on the same folder (e.g. move and copy to my local Mail folder) rather than to the two different ones. I tried removing the old MessageRules.plist in my Library Mail folder, but that made no difference. The newly written rules do the same thing as before.

I was unsure where to post this as it could be either OSX or hardware that is the problem. I am currently unable to shutdown my 2008 Alu iMac. Everytime I shut it down, it restarts instead.
After a little bit of searching the forums/google, I understand that this may be something to do with a driver or application that is refusing to close properly - but have no idea how to try and identify what may be causing it.

Some of my mail is not showing up in my inbox on my Mac but came through on my phone. Am using imap so it should not have deleted from the server...and I have never have had this problem before.Â
It seems to be working again now, but there are 5 or so emails that just will not come through to my Mac inbox even though I can see them in the inbox on my phone...important work emails....concerned this may happen again and something will slip through the net.Â

I have my iMac scheduled to shut down everyday at 12:30 am. Sometimes it will shut down and sometimes it won't. I've only had my iMac for about a month, but am I missing something here? Why won't it shut down automatically.
I had it scheduled to shut down at 12:30am, and I was already asleep. I woke up about 3am to get a glass of water and I checked my iMac and I was able to wake it up. What am I doing wrong, why won't it auto shut down?

My iMac won't shut down completely any more.It gets to a white screen and then freezes, and I have to hold down the power button to get it to shut down.I have also been getting intermittent kernel panics, maybe one every 3 or 4 days.I went through all of the troubleshooting steps to try and figure out the cause, with no luck. Did a new install of Lion and everything seemed OK for a few days, and then started having problems with programs not responding, not being able to shut down, and now getting kernel panics again.Considering completly formatting the drive and starting fresh with everything, but not sure if that would solve the problem either.

I have several iMacs in my office with Lion and Mail 5.1. I have a user who wants to View attachments as Icons to ensure all are attached prior to sending. Unlike all the other iMacs, hers does not have the option "View in Place" and "View as Icon" when she right-clicks on the attachment.
I have found in other posts that you cannot set a defaul to ensure Icons or View in Place will always occur, and that the default depends on the type and size of attachment. I am not sure of that logic, but she can't even choose on an individual email basis. How can those options be enabled?
