PowerPC :: IMac G5 - Find The Bad Component?
Jul 5, 2010
I will try and keep this short and sweet:
Recently acquired an iMac G5, first time booting up I got the question mark of death screen.
Reinstalled the OS and now it is a 50/50 gamble that it will either boot up or give me a kernal panic message.
Question:Is there a way to tell what is the bad component? If it's the HD or Ram, I think I can replace them easily enough.

It does identify my Time Capsule and the G4 Powerbook finds the iMac. Formerly my iMac G5 identified everything on my network.

I am curious if anyone has used the Hauppauge HD PVR with a MAC and an Audio Receiver.
I would like to know if i can plug the component 'out' from my HD PVR into the component 'in' on the receiver and have the video still go out my HDMI, on the receiver, to the tv.

I need to get component video out (HDTV) and am trying to get a video card that can do that. This is for a Quad 2.66 Mac Pro, currently with a 7300GT. Is the HD 3870 it? Since it's a Mac & PC edition and the PC cards have had Component Out via adapter for some time, I am hoping that this card might do it. Naturally I don't want to buy just to find out it isn't. Their website is useless, as usual.

I'm sure most of you are familiar with headphone jack splitters. For those of you who aren't, this is a jack splitter; basically, it lets you plug two sets of headphones into one jack.My question is, does something similar exist for either HDMI cables or Component cables? I'm in the process of redoing my room, and I'm planning on connecting my MacBook, Wii, PS2, and Xbox to an HDTV. The Wii, PS2, and Xbox all use Component input, and I would like to be able to switch between them without having to unplug and replug a bunch of cables. I'm planning on hooking up my MacBook via HDMI, but I'm also looking into getting a Blu-Ray player later on, which will also require HDMI.

My TV doesn't have DVI or VGA inputs, so I can only use component video input to plug my mac mini(mid 2007).
But I have serious problems with it. I have bought a Dvi to component video cable on eBay but it doesn't work with mac mini(it works with old PC).

When I put on computer it was .cdr which could not be used in iMovie. I need to convert to one that will work. I also got MPEG Streamclip, both on advice from a forum discussion. where did it go on my computer? I have searched with Spotlight & it wasn't found.

I purchased a new MacBook Pro. Reinstalled all my applications from my MacBook. But for MPEG Streamclip, it is asking for The Apple QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component, which I bought back in 2009. The Apple Store isn't letting me download it again so I need to find the .dmg on my old MacBook. What is the filename?

I'm wondering if it's possible to play my Xbox on my MacBook display instead of on the terrible standard definition 13" TV I have at school.
Would it be possible to find a component to mini-display adapter?

I am having a problem configuring my mac to display a movie on a tv.
I am using the Dynex mini-DVI to video component. I plugged the component into my mac and the extension cable to the tv.
Once the mac was on, the only thng the tv did was display static.
I tried searching through the display options to reset the resolution and and refresh rate, but was unsuccessful.
The tv I am trying to set up is a Sony 40" HDtv.

How do you find out system specs on Mac OS9? All it tells me on "about this computer" is the RAM and memory used by certain applications. How do I see the hard drive size, processor speed etc...? In Mac OSX you use the system profiler, but what about OS9?

The 60GB HD on my 12" Powerbook is threatening to die on me so I'm thinking now would be a good time to do the harddrive upgrade that I've been putting off for a while. Can anyone offer any advice as to where/how to find a compatible HD for my machine? Will any 2.5" drive work, or does it have to be made specifically for Mac? I found this one, for example, that looked good:[URL]
If anyone can offer suggestions on this drive or on something better it would be much appreciated.

I just inherited a Powerbook G4 17" as my work computer. Model number is A1085. It's the 1.5 ghz I believe. Anyway, it has one problem ? the delete key is broken off. Not only that, but the little rubber spring under the key is also gone. Is it possible for me to replace the key, and the rubber nub, without having to buy an entire new keyboard? Any suggestions on where to get a new keyboard if that is not possible? Best price I can find is $85. I'd hate to have to spend that much (or have work spend that much), for a single key.
I work at a newspaper, and I write stories. No delete key is a big problem.

Ive already googled this subject and i seem to always end up with ridiculous sites trying to sell G4s for like 900 or 1000 bucks. Im looking for a PB G4 for my mom, i just need one that works and is super cheap. She has a sad lil dell that has win98 still and its borderline useless. All she needs it for is internet, typing, and various low key things. My friend has a G4 and it still works great, and i thought it would be nice not having to fix her dell when she gets yet another virus.

Hi guys. I need some help with my Airport. I currently have a D-Link DIR-655 router. The wireless is wonderful when it works but lately the problem is the network has disappeared from my Airport list. I've tried reinstalling the software and it has temporarily fixed the problem but after a minute or so the network vanishes (but I'm still able to connect to it via iPhone). Anyone know what the problem is? I'm currently running 10.5.7 on a 15" Pbook G4.

to make a long story short, my first gen 17" G4 PB had its trackpad/power button cable severed a year ago, forcing me to remove the battery and memory door each time I need to start up. It's been kernel panicking a lot in the last few months, but always restarts fine. Tonight, on startup, it could not find the HD, and the logo shifted from happy mac to question mark and back. Is my HD toast? I know the comp is totally doomed and will be getting a new MBP when they come out (if they come out...), but I had wanted to keep the Powerbook in order to do a firewire transfer of files to the new MBP I get. Can this be fixed? Can the HD be mounted in an enclosure?

I have a dual 1.25 ghz MDD Powermac G4. It was working fine until a couple of days ago. It froze up, I restarted it. I got a blank blue screen.
Also, the computer made some awful clicky noises that I've never heard before.
I booted from the OS X installation CD. Disk utility lists the WD1800 hard drive, but I can't do a re-install and there's no option to repair it.
I can't erase or partition it because when I try, I get a failure message saying it can't be done ("chosen size not valid for chosen filesystem"). The HD is listed in system profiler... with a capacity of 0 bytes.
I assumed that the hard drive had died, so I went to a local PC shop and bought the only IDE drive they had (a Maxtor 6l250r0). I installed it, then booted from the OS X CD.
I know that new hard drives need to be formatted, but I assumed that this could be done with disk utility.
But disk utility can't find the new hard drive, doesn't list in the left column. It shows the optical drives and the install CD and the old WD hard drive which can't be erased or repaired, but no new hard drive.
It's not listed in the system profiler, either.
I checked the cable connections and tried installing it in the front carrier rather than the rear, but nothing works - disk utility and system profiler can't recognize it.
The only other desktop mac I have access to right now is my old 450 mhz Sawtooth G4. I tried putting the HD into the sawtooth and got the same results - disk utility and system profiler can't find the new HD at all, but has no trouble finding the old 20gb HD and the DVD and zip drives.
I'm... not really sure what to do here. Am I doing something wrong?

I'm trying to get iMovie HD running on a Mac here as a matter of urgency. However, I get the above error message when i try to launch it. Its really important I get it up and running today, but I don't have the Install disks for Tiger here at the moment. All I have access to is another Mac with a working install of iMovie on it.
Does anyone know if there's a hidden directory or the like that might have these components stored in it? I've copied across the Quicktime directory from Library, but it doesn't seem to have made any difference.
