Oct 9, 2007Why were some Powermac G4's names have Quicksilver in them? Is it a special line or what? Whats the diffrence between the G4 "Quicksilver" and the regular g4?

Dec 17, 2008using a MBP in a target disk mode i got the G4 to build, but on its own, the folder with the question mark appears blinking I want to know how do i get on lookign for the right PCi IDe card? Would any do?Is the Fw400 Card a better option? I guess putting a system disk in an external through firewire isn't gonna do it?
But getting a PCI firewire would? is it fasterAm not to sure what i want to do with the machine once i get it working. Maybe put it at my folks house, about time the got to learn the MAC OS x.

Jan 27, 2010 I am wondering how I go about removing my Hard Drive from my Power Mac G4 QUicksilver? I don't know the first thing about removal or location of the HD?
It is a 40GB Ultra ATA/66 (5400 rpm)
I would like to remove it and fit it with a Hard Drive case enclosure so I can use it as an extra external for backing up data.
I was told by Tiger Direct that this enclosure should work:

Aug 1, 2008I found a G4 quicksilver I couldn't help but bid on(eBay). Its 50 bucks with shipping. But before i pay I want to know a couple questions and opinions.
Question: Will this computer be good for some light movie editing and watching home videos and youtube? Cause my g3 is too slow to play any videos. I just want to know to get some advise if this is a really good deal or i should just save up more money and buy a newer mac.

Dec 3, 2009I just set out to initialize the drive of my old G4 800 DP, using the system disc. Everything began fine but when I returned the screen was black, and video wasn't being picked up. I decided to force reboot and start over, but now I cannot get my mac to boot at all. Black screen with no video. Cannot boot from firewire target drive. Machine won't recognize system disc. When I boot there is no chime. I hear the machine apparently working hard to read the system disc but nothing happens and it eventually ejects the disc. I've tried 3 different discs, so I know it's the machine not the disc. Pressing "option" at startup has no effect. I also know it's not my LCD, as it works fine with my other machine. Anyone have any idea about what's going on here and what I can do to regain access to my machine?

May 14, 2009My hard drive from my G4 733mhz wont mount at all. The ? in a blue folder just appears. I have tried to start up from an external mountable drive and the ? again appears. When I disconnect the internal hard drive completely and boot from my external drive it boots up.
Prior to this problem I took the hard drive from my G4 733Mhz and put it in my G4 867Mhz computer to load a new disk image. I did this as I didn't have access to an external mountable drive then. After doing this the hard drive doesn't mount in either computer and when connected all other mountable drives wont mount. I have the internal drive set to master.

Finally i decided last week to upgrade an old Powerpc G4 733 Quicksilver (model before 2002 vers.)
I changed combo with a good Pioneer dvr-112d.
Now i'm asking u an indication: find a video card better than nvidia mx 32 installed with two important targets
1) Should support wide screen 1680x1850
2) should support core image tech in order to work better with last Tiger.
reading around i'm sure fx5200 satisfy nr2 but doesn't support wide, ati like 9600 had big problems of compatibility with my G4 model.
Pls could u point me to the right way ?

PowerPC :: Quicksilver Power Supply On A Gigabit Motherboard?
Mar 7, 2008Recently I didn't do my research, and I purchased a Quicksilver power supply to put on a Gigabit machine. I noticed it had four extra pins which look like some of the ones they use to power processors in some PCs (tho I've come to find this is for the ADC port). I dug a little deeper (Googled "powermac_g4.pdf") and found out that some of the pins have differences between the Gigabit PS and the Quicksilver PS.
Has anyone else had an experience like this? Will the PS work without any wirecutting or do I need to get a new one?

Jul 10, 2009I have two drives in my Quicksilver 2002 G4, one is a 250GB which can be fully used, the other an 80GB. Can U rid both of these drives and install two SATA 1.5TB drives? I do not want to use the PCI slots for a SCSI card and wire additional drives that way, because the transfer speed will be limited to 40mbps I believe. I have a Sonnet card a dual PPC 1,8Ghz card, a PCI USB 2.0 card and have other open PCI slots, but finally ran out of storage, and have a use for this machine to hold a LOT more. Other than the transfer speeds possible on SATA, are there any other differences between the original IDE (ATA) drives? Do they connect the same way?

Apr 18, 2007I have a G4 Power Mac. It's the "digital audio" model that has been upgraded with a 1.2Ghz G4 processor. It works well except for one thing. It shuts down randomly and suddenly. Then after 5 or 10 minutes it turns itself back on, reboots and runs fine. (It is set to re-boot after a power failure.)I suspect what is happing is the power supply is turnning itself off due to some kind of a thermal, self protection switch. The fan seems to work but the PS gets warm.What's the cure? Replace the power supply? If so where to get a new(er) one?

Jun 11, 2008I have a PowerMac G5 dual 1.8ghz running leopard. It worked flawlessly since the day I bought it.
Then as of last week whenever I booted the computer I would get the gray screen with a black box saying to reboot the computer (in 5 different languages). I would reboot the computer. Same screen.
Is there some way to check what is wrong? Is this typically a hardware issue or an operating system?

Sep 19, 2008I was installing Tiger using FireWire from my Powermac G4 and it was nearly done when my Powerbook (target) died due to lack of battery... When the Powermac was rebooted, I get only a question mark and flashing smile.
I tried to test the C and T keys holding them down during boot up but only get the smiley face every single time... I even disconnected the secondary drive to no avail.

I'm trying to boot from the Mac OS cd (tried 10.4 that it came with and 10.5) and both get to the grey screen with the Apple Logo and that's as far as it gets. No spinning loading wheel.
Tried the following..
PRAM reset
Swapping Ram out
Is there anything else i can do. It's a really good machine so i hope it's not needing a Logic Board repair!
PowerPC :: Powermac G4 Will Not Power On
Jan 27, 2009Currently it is almost entirely unresponsive. I came to wake it from sleep a few days ago and it refused to wake. It is totally unresponsive to the power button on the Apple Cinema display and when the power button on the front of the tower is used the button lights up blue and then goes out. There is no fan activity or other sign of life. There is no burned oder or evidence of anything charred.It is a dual 1.42 MDD FW800 machine with AGP graphics. Model: M8570So far I have:
-Removed and reseated the graphics card, RAM and other PCI cards.
-Removed battery and let it sit unplugged over night.
-Performed PMU reset. (once)
At this point I have come to believe the power supply needs to be replaced. it is model: 614-0224 (360w). After looking online they are stupidly expensive, from $180 to over $500 each. I will be ordering a new MB (PRAM?) battery (Saft 3.6v LS14250C) and replacing that as well.
Questions:
- Have I missed anything here? Is there any other explanation or method of troubleshooting I should try?
- Is there any cheaper source for the power supplies? Why are they so absurdly expensive? Does anyone here want to give me a sweetheart deal on one?
- Can anyone recommend a source for the LS14250C battery locally in Manhattan? Radioshack has it as an online only item and wants $15 for it.
