OS X :: Why Extensions Not Installed Properly

Jul 26, 2010

I recently did an erase and install of Snow Leopard. After the install I used Migration assistant to restore all my files. Before it completed I got about 7 messages that extensions were not installed properly and need to be reinstalled. One of them had something to do with my Canon Printer and the other was for my Elgato TV Tuner. I'm not sure what the other extensions were. Is it normal for some extensions to not restore correctly after using Migration assistant?

Windows On Mac :: BootCamp Update 3.1 Not Installed Properly

Sep 5, 2010

I've installed the Boot Camp drivers that came with the Snow Leopard dvd. Then after everything is installed, I look in the Apple Software Update program for the 3.1 Boot Camp-Update. I try to install this, but during installation several errors pop-up from the bluetooth, trackpad and keyboard driver.

After restarting the laptop, I can't use the functions (like brightness, volume,...) on the F1-F10 buttons anymore. The only solution to make it work again is to reinstall Windows. System Restore or trying to install the original Boot Camp drivers doesn't work. I thought this was just some corrupt download so I reinstalled Windows, but the problem still occurred. I then did it again, but still.

MacBook Pro :: Error - System Extension Cannot Be Used

Apr 6, 2012

I have a problem with Norton AntiVirus and have spent hours on-line with three levels of Norton Engineeers.  Norton will not perform an idle-scan and loses its license on restart, requiring re-entry of the product key.

When removing Norton files for a re-install an alert pops up System extension cannot be used The system extension "/System/Library/Extensions/SymInternetSecurity.kext" was installed improperly and cannot be used.  Please try reinstalling it, or contact the product's vendor for an update. As noted, I have spent many hours on the phone and LiveChat with Norton engineers.  The last one has suggested I contact Apple Support for assistance.  They will call back on Monday. I am running a 15" MacBook Pro (Early-2011), 2.3 GHz Intel i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3, OS X Lion 10.7.3, 512 GB Solid State SATA (Crucial)

ITunes For Mac :: System Extension Cannot Be Used After Installing 11.4

Installing latest version of iTunes (11.4) today led to the following error message: System extension cannot be usedThe system extension “//System/ Library/ Extensions/AppleUSBEthernetHost.kext” was installed improperly and cannot be used. Please try reinstalling it, or contact the product's vendor for an update.

I'm able to use my USB drive for Time Machine, and that appears to be functioning ok. And what does it mean for the continued safe operation of my MacBook?(Other than the distraction of getting a worrying error message that I take time out to report?)

OS X :: System Extension Cannot Be Used When Adding Printer Driver

Sep 11, 2009

That's the message I got when adding a new printer driver. The reference was system/library/extension/cnqe202-classicnotseize.kext. Or close to that. I think I got that message also when upgrading to 10.6.1. As I recall there was also a note about updating this extension but no info on how to do it. Searching for .kext brought up a long list from last August having to do with crash reports with skype, real player, fire fox and a couple more; but nothing permanent and everything is working fine. Anyone have any thoughts about this? I'm using an iMac, 20".

PowerPC :: Repair Extension Program For The Powerbook G5?

Sep 8, 2008

My neighbor's 3 year old iMac G5 (iSight) recently developed the all-too-common lines problem. She took it to the genius bar and they told her it would be $760 to fix. This was rubbish, so I set her up with an external monitor until I could figure something else out.Today, I decided to call Apple and try my luck at getting them to repair it for her. The first person I talked to told me to take it to the genius bar, so I asked politely to speak to his supervisor. At first, he tried to tell me about the repair extension program for the power issue, which this computer was not eligible for, though the serial number was close. He thought the problem was related to that. I told him several times that it was not related in any way. I then explained to him that I felt Apple should fix the screen free of charge because it was a defective product. He then said "I'm going to have to say no. You've used the computer for almost three years, I don't see how that is defective" I countered back by saying that it was not an isolated issue and that hundreds of people are having the same problem with their computers in the same serial number range.

PowerPC :: Dead HD - Repair Extension Program Offered By Apple?

Dec 21, 2007

First the question, then the story:

Does anyone suspect that a dead hard drive in a 20" iMac G5 could somehow be related to the component failure described in the iMac G5 Repair Extension Program offered by Apple?

Although the article does not list hard drive failure as one of the symptoms caused by this component failure, I am still concerned that it could possibly be related, based on the fact that it was purchased during the date range specified, and the serial number falls within the range specified.

So here's the story: A short while back, the iMac suddenly stopped booting. It only got as far as a gray screen with a small folder image in the center, alternating between a question (?) mark and the Mac Finder face. After asking around and checking a few forums, the ultimate consensus was that it was unable to detect the hard drive. So I took it to a Genius Bar; the fellow who was helping me tested the startup, then took out the hard drive and put it in an enclosure to test it, and concluded that the hard drive is dead. He pointed out that, even in the enclosure, it had no power at all; the only solution would be to buy a new hard drive.

I did some more online searching after coming home, and found quite a few forums discussing the above warranty extension, several of which cited the logic board as the problem component referenced in the article from Apple, and that there were bad caps in these models that were overheating. Sadly, I don't really know what any of that means... But should I be hesitant to simply replace the hard drive, for fear that the same thing could happen again? And does the fact that the article references power issues, combined with the fact that the Mac Genius told me that there was no power in the hard drive, mean that it could perhaps be related? Do I have a case to try and pursue the extension repair?

PowerPC :: G4 Not Booting Up Properly

Mar 12, 2008

Yesterday I installed Ice Clean and ran a few of the maintenance procedures. This morning when I tried starting my laptop, it started with grey screen and apple symbol, then black screen with white text stating:
Mar 13 08:02:44 launched: can't exec /bin/sh for single user: no such file or directory.

I tried contacting Ice Clean, they claim it is not related. I checked my system profile and I thought I had 1gb of RAM it only says 512gb. Could a RAM failure cause this problem? Have started using target disk mode with my old faithful G4 and everything on the hard disk is still intact. Ran disk utility and all ok!

MacBook :: Does Mac Operating System Not Work Properly With YouTube

Aug 21, 2014

I noticed that my Messages on youtube are instantly deleted when I comment on some peoples Youtube channels. I don't think its the person that owns the youtube channels doing it because it is deleted almost instantly after I log out. It's very odd and I don't think its youtube censoring my comment because I'm not cursing in the comment and I don't believe cursing is against the TOS on Youtube anyways.

Another thing I notice is that when I'm on a flash based chatroom that when someone I am talking to has left the chatroom it will still say they are in the chatroom until I click on my friendlist and than they turn red as if they are gone. It is very odd that I am noticing these strange bugs. However the chatroom thing could be a chatroom problem because it might do that on my Windows side which I never checked because I'm usually on that chatroom on my Mac side.

PowerPC :: Interface Hasnt Been Connecting To My Emac Properly?

Jan 13, 2011

I've been on a 1.25 GHz Emac for 2 or 3 years now. I use it for pretty much everything, but mostly messing about in logic 7. I have a M audio firewire 410 interface, and daisy chained into that is a Iomega firewire harddrive. Everything has been fine for a long time with the exception of some very occasional digital distortion.

But since sometime last week, my interface hasnt been connecting to my emac properly. When booting up, the interface's blue power light is meant to flash until it connects. But at the moment, it never stops flashing as it never connects.I initally thought the interface just needed its firmware updated, or had a dodgy cable. But I've also tried plugging my external straight into the emac, and that dosnt mount when its on its own either.

So far I've tried: 2 cold starts, hundreds of restarts/power cycles, zapping PRAM, reseting NVRAM, reinstalling the interface's firmware, installing the "combo update" and using the alternative firewire port. However none of this has worked.'ve spent a long time just trying to get it work and i really cant.Does anyone have any ideas of what I can do to get my firewire ports working ?

PowerPC :: Ethernet Not Working Properly - Randomly Connects / Disconnects

Oct 11, 2006

I've been having problems staying connected on my Powerbook G4. The wireless works perfectly but the ethernet does not. I've been using the dorm ethernet jack to connect. The problem is that my computer can't maintain a consistent connection through ethernet so it randomly connects and disconnects. I called my campus' IT department and they told me that it must be my computer because they're system said that it didn't detect my computers IP address. I called Applecare and the person told me that it must be something wrong with either the network card or the ethernet port. Anyway, he gives me a case number so I can go get a repair. Unfortunately an Apple Store is far away from where my school is so I went to my school's bookstore instead.

The bookstore is an authorized service place. I drop the computer off to them and they sent it to Apple. I got a call today from the bookstore guy saying that the Apple technicians discovered that "liquid" had gotten into the motherboard and refused to service my computer. I was really angry when I heard this because I keep absolute care of my laptop. I know for a fact that no water has ever been around my laptop. I'm guessing it must have been negligence on the bookstore's part. I declined the $1300+ repair estimate so now its on its way back to me. I have a brother that works at the Apple Store and he just suggested going directly to an Apple Store this time. Will they just refuse warranty repair again?

PowerPC :: G4 Combo Drive Works Fine But Not Eject Properly

Dec 15, 2006

I found this iBook in my dad's attic at his business. He said he had bought when they released and planned on using it for financial stuff, but figured his Windows laptop would do better. It was in its box BTW, not collecting dust.

Anyways, it's out of warranty and it's specs are:
1.07 GHz PowerPC G4
768 MB DDR SDRAM
Combo drive
12" screen
30GB HD

The combo drive is not fun. It takes a good push, no shove, into the slot for it to go in. It reads it fine and all, and can burn CD's, but pulling it out is plain horrible. I can't just take it and pull it out, I have to have my dad hold the iBook, and I grab the CD and pull it out. The CD ends up having deep scratches and is unreadable from then on. What do I do? Replace it? Or is it repairable?

OS X V10.7 Lion :: "System Extension Cannot Be Used"

Jul 3, 2012

I was having some weird problems with file sharing on my network recently, so I tried changing around some of the permissions on my drives to see if I could resolve it. For some reason I was getting messages saying I didn't have permission to copy files from one computer to another on my network. This seemed to come on randomly as we have been doing file transfers this way for quite some time now. I looked at our file sharing preferences in the System Preference's and added all 4 drives from my Mac Pro in there and made sure that my username had full read and write capabilities. I then tried logging into my Mac Pro from my iMac, just like I've done in the past, and I was still unable to copy the files. So I removed all the folders and turned off file sharing. I then clicked 'Get Info' for my main Macintosh HD and tried changing the permission settings there. I clicked the option to make my username the owner, and then I clicked 'Apply to enclosed items...' and this brought up a progress bar that I let go for about 10 minutes. Then I got a pop-up error message stating "System extension cannot be used" and had an extension path listed underneath, saying it was installed improperly and cannot be used. This happens an endless amount of times. It seems to be giving me this message for every single extension on the computer. If I hold down enter the pop-ups just keep coming with different extensions listed.

PowerPC :: Doesn't Boot Properly - Blinking Folder With Question Mark

Jul 6, 2009

I'm having an issue with my PowerBook G4. It wouldn't turn on at all before, so I installed another motherboard. Now it will power on, but it only shows this folder icon that blinks. I'm a complete n00b to macs. If this were a PC I would of fixed it by now. I need some help. I've tried the installation disk, but when I hold down the C key, it takes longer, but it just shows that folder again. When I hold down the Option key, it only gives me a reload button, and an arrow button, but no boot up options. Do you think it could be a problem with this other used motherboard? Or is it that I just didn't put it in right? I've double checked all the hardware, and it seems to be all connected. The keyboard lights up, and the trackpad works, and it makes the boot-up sound.

OS X :: Just Installed New System And Forgot Password?

Sep 26, 2009

I finally decided to do all the back up and such to update the system. It was one of those if it ain't broken don't fix it type situations. I just installed Leopard to my old 14" Mac G4 laptop. Everything was going fine until the first screen dialog box asked for my password. I tried the usual suspects.. even my hint was "the usual one" and I cannot get the computer to accept it or anything else. I am in a loop and cannot get any further. The dialogue box gives you log in, restart and shut down. Is there a work around? How do I get out of this mess? I am in deep poop as I need to access my computer. What can I do... I'm logging on to someone else's computer until I can get back into mine.

PowerPC :: 12" PowerBook G4 Not Booting Properly Unless In Safe Mode After Clean Install

Jun 29, 2009

I recently purchased a sort of beat up 1.5GHz 12" PowerBook G4, top of the line, and it arrived today. It boots up normally when the apple appears, then it shows the blue screen and then the mouse turns into a spinning wheel. Also, when I move the cursor, a second cursor from the same spot stays in the top-left corner. The PowerBook will only work normally as a headless server (powers on, lid closed), unless booted in safe mode. Another issue is the screen. The seller said there were lines going up and down the screen, but it varies depending on what is displayed on the screen. If the screen is grey or in target-disk mode, they do not appear, but on the 10.5 standard desktop pic, it changes pattern. The lines can be seen here: [URL]
