PowerPC :: MacBook Pro Metal Blemishes..a La PBG4?
Aug 1, 2006
Has anyone experienced the disturbing dark blemishing/staining/erosion that showed up in several aluminum PowerBook models.like in the handrest area?
I am curious because I have a small little spot that said area and cannot get it clean. While it may be a little dink, I may invest in some kind of protector if word is that others are seeing any blemishes.

I've still got my old PBG4 around after upgrading to my new MBP.
The wattage rating on my old adapter is actually higher than my new MBP, 65W for the old one vs. 60W on the new.
But the plug is different. Does anyone make an old-style PB round DC plug>magsafe adapter so that I can use the old charger with the new laptop?
Since these things are like $80 it'd be nice to just keep using the old one or at least have it as a spare. It's not that I really need one but if I could buy an adapter it would be convenient.

Can anyone recommend a brand/type of super-adhesive metal-to-metal double-stick tape?
I have a very slight warp to the bottom pan of my MBP. So slight as to be unnoticeable save for one rather obvious result: the part that goes over the top of the optical drive slot has come un-glued/fastened/riveted to the frame behind.
I want to secure it back against the frame and tape seems the best option. The pressure on the flange (part over the slot) is not great - it can easily be pressed in and will hold for a second or two - but will not hold with just regular double stick.

I have developed a nasty case of contact dermatitis on my hands, and I think it's triggered by a mild metal allergy to my MBP.
Anybody know where I might find some kind of a cover for the palm rests etc? I'm using an external mouse / keyboard at the moment.
It's hard trying to track down the cause of the allergy but most of my time is spent on the laptop so...

has anyone had tiny cracks in the metal of the unibodies? I have a macbook pro with an invisible shield on it and I have noticed what looks to be a tiny crack about a cm in length. When I rub back and forth on the invisible shield it goes away as is the chemical used to hold on the shield fills it in?

So I am planning to start riding my motorcycle to class, and I need to bring my macbook. While I do have several backpacks that can carry it, I am terrified of ruining it if I were to wreck the bike.

today I received my new MBP15, unpacked, opened the screen..and I found this: [URL:...] it's not in relief, seems some defect in the aluminum, like metal fatigue. Is it common? No way to fix it?

I read that this liquid metal is very light weight and still strong at the same time.
But wondered how it looks.. Is it glossy like stainless steel or brushed as the aluminium used on iPad and MacBook Pros? How dark is it?
There has been alot talking about a Carbon Fibre MBA, as it would take some of the weight - could this be it in stead?

So many users on here complain about the Aqua interface and want Marble. Now I never got to use anything prior to Leopard, this perhaps could explain why, apart from a quick go on my teachers iMac which had Tiger. I for one love the Aqua interface as well as the old Pinstripes used in earlier versions of Mac OS X, I have a thing for stripes as well as pre-leopard OS X.
Now what I want is an update from users on GUI applications out there, all the older threads will be out of date now. So let me know what's going on with them. Does anyone know where the files for GUI are kept in Snow Leopard or Leopard, I'm wondering if you can almost do a transplant of the files from Tiger into Snow Leopard? If there is also anyone who can make a Pinstripe theme for the dock to be used in DockDoctor could you post the files? I've added a screenshot from 10.0 to just remind anyone of the style.
I've also added a poll to get some real data on how MacRumors feels about Aqua.

Is there any way that I can change the skin of Finder from the brushed metal to something similar of Firefox/Mail.app? I have tried using Uno and that gave the perfect result, but it also changed my other apps too. Changing the Uno settings to 'Default Aqua' for all except finder failed also, as it still changed Firefox.
So does anyone know how to get rid of the horrible metal texture of Finder and replace it with something a little more consistent, and without changing any other apps (except other metal textured ones)?

I have a Dual 1.8 GHz PowerPC G5 with 2.5 GB of RAM. My fan starts revving really loud when I am using multiple apps (Adobe CS2, Firefox, iTunes) and while watching a video tutorial or AVI movie (both saved on my desktop). It also happens when I am just watching a AVI movie with no other apps open.
I just added one GB of RAM yesterday thinking maybe this will solve the problem since I am running multiple apps. This did not resolve it. So I searched the messageboard for threads on fan issues similar to mine. I read it may be caused by the tempature in my room. I keep the tower on my floor on top of 2 pieces of wood about a 1/2 inch thick. I live in a small brick studio apartment so the tempature is usaully between 60 to 70 degrees.
I looked into smcfancontrol but it looks like its for laptops only.I also do not have a utilities program for my computer yet. I was wondering what was the best program out there to clean up/tune-up my hard drive so its running at maxium speed.Has anyone had experince with this issue and have any answers? I am concerned this may be very detrimental to my computer in the long run.

I curently have 10.3.9 with a PowerPC G4 dual w/ 1.25 processors and 2 gig of ram. I want the highest upgrade I can get that will be compatibe with my software which is:
Quark 6.5
Acrobat 7.1
Acrobat Distiller 7.0
Illustrator CS1
Photoshop CS1
Microsoft Office (don't know what version but I've had it for years)
I really can't afford to go buy all the software again and I don't want my system to crash. Any suggestions?
This upgrade is mostly spawned due to the recent purchase of a new iPod Nano... Not supported by my current OS! Man, I didn't read the requirements, shame on me. However, the dang thing will work on my kid's PC w/ XP Pro. I only got the Nano cause it's mac - he wanted the Zune that ONLY works w/ PC.

I currently have a PowerBook G4 1.67GHz, 90GB HD, 1GB DDr SDRAM... it's ok, but is now getting slightly outdated. Converting takes FOREVER, programs are slow and often crash, I'm nearly out of hdd space and I can't use new application as some require Intel.
So with Apples announcement of the new 'updates' to the MacBooks and the MacBook Pros, I am really torn on which one to get. My initial thought was MBP but then MacRumors posted information about the Montevina Centrino 2 due in June, and then all the speculation started about the next MacBook and Pros Revisions.
It must have been this time a couple of years ago, and I bought my PowerBook, and then a few months down the line the transition to Intel began...
What do I go for? A MacBook (2.4GH White) or do I just go ahead and get a MacBook Pro (2.5GH 15")?
I really feel like I'm downgrading if I go for a MacBook.
When I got my first mac it shouldn't have been a PowerBook, I should have went for the iBook (is that what it was called?)
For the last 4 Months, all I've used my PB for is: writing with Word and Final Draft, iTunes (movie, music, tv shows), converting for itunes, e-mail, internet, and Adium (chatting). I'd like to start a website showcasing my University Media work.

I am kind of new to the MAC world... I once had the really old ibook with the handle a long time ago..and I never got a new Mac due to some problems I faced!
But now, I want to go back to MAC because many things were developed and I missed using a Mac! So, now I am confused between the Powerbook12 inch or the White Macbook 2Ghz ? I really love the size of the Macbook but I am worried about the intel processor...?

For quite some time now, I've been in doubt whether to buy a new Macbook or Macbook Pro (after Leopard is released). I'd really prefer a MB Pro but my budget won't really allow that. I guess I'll have to settle for a Macbook. A black one, no white in any case. But a MB, though fast and 'cool', remains a consumer notebook. I've always had pro machines : a G3/400 pismo powerbook, quicksilver Powermac G4/800. Now, I've been looking at some second hand Powerbooks, especially the last models (1.67Ghz, dual layer sd and high res screen) are of particular interest to me. I've always wanted a machine like that, but I didn't have the money when they were released at the end of 2005/beginning 2006. Now I do. And it's hard to resist.
I know that a Powerbook G4 quite a bit slower than a Macbook, not to mention a Macbook Pro. But it's not all about processor speed, but rather the whole 'experience' of working on such a notebook. I also believe that a 1.67Ghz G4 Powerbook will be a lot faster than my Powermac G4/800.

the title awkwardly sums it up for ya. My main machine is a 1.33GHz 12" iBook G4 with a gig o' RAM and Tiger. This was my first Mac, I got it in August, but it seems to be showing its Geekbench score of 762. Launching programs is often agonizing, and the Finder is sluggish. Also, 1024x768 is getting a tad cramped...
Anyway, a friend of the family stopped by today, bringing over his MacBook for me to play with. It seems great, especially the size, and the widescreen display is terrific. Running Windoze would actually be a huge benefit for me, because my idiotic sister hates Macs, and of course I need to keep the little princess happy.
I am considering selling my beloved iBook, and selling some of the other Apples in my orchard, to fund the purchase of a MacBook. My problems with this are.

I cannot type for more than seconds before any program kicks my out to the message again. It has taken 15 minutes just to type this post.Â

I am up against the wall with a time sensitive issue. I am trying to learn the new Neonatal Resuscitative Procedures, 6th Edition, released this year. It has a modern DVD. Claims compatibility with most any computer out there. But not 10.7.3, that is for sure. I followed and refollowed all the read me and such to get it to work. It says "You can't open the application NRP2011 because PowerPC applications are no longer supported."
Is there any way to play this disc on my computer? Any emulators or something that will facilitate what it thinks is a powerpc disc? It may or may not be powerpc, or may have a powerpc version included. It claims compatibility with all powerpc and intel macs. I suspect with the newest OS X, it is so hard core intel that anything that smells of the old powerpc days is verboten. Just my guess.
Info:
MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.7.3)
