PowerPC :: Installing Leopard On G4 And Kernel Panic Error

Aug 11, 2008

I have a PowerBook G4, 1.33 GHz, 512MB ram and I am having trouble installing leopard. I have backed up the hard drive and erased it for a clean install. Every time I go to install if freezes at "calculating estimated time remaining" and gives a kernel panic error. I am unable to check the panic log as the hard drive was erased. I have already repaired disk, reset pram etc.

PowerPC :: Unable To Work With Kernel Panic Error

Jan 17, 2008

I'm having problems with my powerbook freezing up and needing to be restarted. It's been concluded that when you apply pressure left of the trackpad it freezes with a kernel panic error.

Does anyone know if this can be fixed without a new logicboard? What causes the kernel panic error? Is it allways a hardware problem??

I get the boot menu select the external hard drive from witch the leopard dvd is on. I have inspected and tested this and it works on other macs. After o select it about 15-20 seconds go by then the lovely kernel panic happens.

Mac Pro :: Installing OSX Without DVD (SSD And Kernel Panic)

Jul 21, 2009

I'm trying to get OSX installed onto my new intel x25-m SSD, but it just won't happen. Trying to boot from my install DVD that came with my new Mac Pro throws up a kernel panic after about a minute or two of loading.

Trying to boot from my store-bought Leopard DVD does nothing. After restarting it just sits there and the DVD stops spinning after a couple minutes. Is there another way I can turn my new SSD into the boot drive? This is driving me nuts.

Mac Pro :: Kernel Panic - OS X Recovered From Serious Error

Oct 17, 2009

My dad's computer just had a kernel panic and I want to fix it fast. I've already run the basic Apple hardware test and it says no problems found. About last week he added 8GB (2x4GB) modules to his Mac Pro. He's running OSX 10.5.8, when he started it back up, it said OSX has recovered from an error/serious error and sent a report to Apple. The most recent thing he did was change his external backup drive (for TM) to a fresh one - a 1TB Lacie HD. Is there anything I can do to figure out what happened? Is it possible this could be just a once off thing, or maybe it was that mosaic screensaver? When the kernel panic occurred it was on that screensaver.

OS X :: Won't Work With Kernel Panic Report / Showing Error

Feb 23, 2008

I was having kernel panics quite often before 10.5.2, and they don't seem to have stopped even after the upgrade. Someone mentioned that it might have been the aftermarket RAM I installed (which is fully up to apple specs btw). But I noticed something on the error report that leads me to think it might be my M-Audio firewire external sound card instead. I've highlighted the spot in red.

IMac :: Won't Work With Kernel Panic And DIMM0 Error

Sep 3, 2008

I'm having crazy kernel panics on my 1GHz iMac G4, every 15 mins or so. There was a power outage and it wouldn't boot up (stuck on gray screen) so the MacGenius wiped my hard drive and reloaded 10.3.5 (yeah I had 10.3.9 - old stuff). Before the MacGenius got to it, the Hardware extended test showed no memory failures, but now the Hardware test shows: memory error detected, 2 MEM/1/4: DIMM0/J22.

I can't get the software update to run, but the kernel panics happened when I had the latest updates (for the 10.3), so I don't think thats the issue (but another issue).

I have had the computer open before so I'm comfortable with crackin it open, but if I were to pull one of the ram cards, which one is DIMM0 ?

Is the ram bad? Is this causing my kernel panics?

Software :: Won't Work With Kernel Panic Error During Installation

Jul 11, 2009

I'm in possession of a mac pro 2x 2.8ghz intel quad core running leopard. I have a main hardrive and a secondary harddrive. I was attempting to reformat the first hd and reinstall leopard. I pop in the cd as I have with many other systems, click the install startup and reboot, after about 4 minutes of waiting I see the black screen drop and it asks me to restart my comp, presumably a kernel panic error. I've done this with two different hd's to rule out it being an hd problem. I've also procured a friend's copy of leopard and the same problem occurs. The system was acquired from a local business that closed recently and sold off it's stuff which is how I came into possession of the system. It has no 3d party hardware that I can see. I find myself wondering if it is a problem with the motherboard and since the system used to be for business purposes perhaps there is some sort of block or lockout on the mobo that's preventing an installation.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Keep Getting Kernel Panic Error After TM Restore And Migration Assistant Won't Work

Feb 2, 2012

My computer broke down so I had a repaired and the original software was re-installed and it worked perfect. Whenever I restore from Time Machine, I get the kernel panic error. I have to reload the original software and it works perfect again. I tried using Migration Assistant, but it fails every time after 30 minutes of saying 1 minute left to transfer documents. I go in to Time Machine and view my external hard drive and all my stuff is still there, except I noticed my applications are crossed out. At least the non-default ones. That may just be because they're not currently loaded.

What can I do from here? I was using Lion before my computer went down. I'm now using the OSX install DVD. I also have the Snow Leopard, but haven't tried that, if it even makes a difference.

Info:
iMac, Mac OS X (10.7.2)

PowerPC :: IBook G4 Onslaught Of Kernel Panic

May 7, 2010

I bought an iBook G4 a few months ago, with the airport not working, causing kps, but i could still boot up. The repair to this was to open it up, and sandwich a thick piece of paper on the airport card inside the ibook. This solved my airport problem and i could use the internet without any problems. Then one day, I turned on my iBook, and it gave me a bright 'You need to restart your computer'. message with 4 different languages. I restarted it hundreds of times, constantly giving me this kp. Then i formatted my harddrive, re-installed leopard (10.5.6) via target disk (partitioned it, restored the smaller partition with leopard, then booting off that partition in target disk mode). I then deleted that smaller partition with ipartition, resized the main partition, did 3 Disk Repairs (disk utility) and rebooted the iBook. Still the same kernel panic. CMD-S gave me this error: Code: Wed Dec 31 18:12:10 1969 Unresolved kernel trap(cpu 0): 0x300 - Data access DAR=0x0000000000000120 PC=0x000000001761039C Latest crash info for cpu 0: Exception state (sv=0x12de2000) PC=0x1761039C; MSR=0x00009030; DAR=0x00000120; DSISR=0x40000000; LR=0x1761275C; R1=0x16DFBAA0; XCP=0x0000000C (0x300 - Data access)......

PowerPC :: Powerbook G4 - Last Model Before Intel - Kernel Panic

Sep 7, 2010

I have a BIG problem with my old powerbook. I have decided to format it.

It came with tiger, I had installed leopard with an upgrade DVD (not full version).

What I did: I inserted the leopard upgrade dvd and told the pb to initialize and install. After a while I had an error message. It already deleted everything, so when I insert the leopard dvd, it doesn't find any other OS, therefore I can't install the upgrade.

NO PROBLEM, I have the 2 tiger DVD. I insert the first one, pressing C, no. It does not start.

NO PROBLEM, I connect via firewire the powerbook to a macpro. I open the cd 1 of tiger (in the macpro) go to the installation file, and start the installation via firewire. It tells me that I have to partion the disk in Mac os extended with an option "GUI" (something like that).

I have noticed that the GUI mode is for an intel based mac, but mine is ppc...but if I select any other option the system doesn't allow me to continue with the installation of OSX]

I did it, and the installation proceeded well. After a while It asked me for CD2, I inserted it and finished the installation succesfully.

Now I started my powerbook...and is not working, again Kernel Panic...but now there is the OS installed, so...why?

PowerPC :: EMac Kernel Panic Freezing Not Booting?

Aug 11, 2010

my used eMac 1.42 ghz with 2gb ram, tiger 10.4.11 began to freeze a few months ago so I cleared the hard drive and reinstalled = worked ok for a while. Now, it is regularly freezing and even locking up when it has been running for a while - when it heats up. Until it cools off a while, on restart or after shutdown, it will hang at the grey screen or display a flashing folder with an alternating finder icon and a question mark - I assume it can't find the OS. After rebooting, I got the report function with this info

PowerPC :: Tried Booting IBook With MBP Startup Disks - Kernel Panic

Sep 8, 2007

I'm relatively new to Macs and I wanted to try a clean install (or erase and install) on my ibook. I recently purchased a MBP and since Leopard is on the horizon, I wanted to do a "trial run" of installing an updated operating system. I know that you can just hit update instead of doing a clean install, but I've been reading that things run better when you do a fresh install. My old ibook still has Panther on it and I figured I could try to install Tiger on it from my MBP disks.

I know that this represents a violation of the license, but I thought it would be worth it to ensure that I don't make any major mistakes when I'm doing the same procedure with my brand new MBP when Leopard gets released. When I tried booting from the disk from my ibook I got a kernel panic which I interpreted as a sign that it was not a good idea so I abandoned the project. Now every time I try to start my ibook I get another kernel panic and I'm afraid I just broke my old computer.

OS X :: Leopard Kernel Panic On Installation

Dec 25, 2008

I have a 2 GHz Intel Core Duo MacBook with 1GB of SDRAM. I have OS X Tiger v. 10.4.6, and I just recieved Leopard v. 10.5.4, and I am attempting to install it. If it makes any difference, I have my harddrive partitioned - 40GB for OS X, and 30GB for Ubuntu Linux (8.10 Intrepid Ibex), and rEFIt to switch between the two. I booted into Tiger and popped in the Leopard installation DVD. A window popped open with an icon to install Leopard. I double clicked on this, and it told me to restart. So, I pressed the restart button in the window, and the computer restarted, automatically booting into the OSX DVD.

The Apple logo popped up, with the little spinning wheel. It churned for a few minutes, then it had a kernel panic: So, I did as the notification told me, and restarted. It automatically booted into the DVD again, and the same thing happened. Next time, as a booted up, I held the eject key down, and I was able to get the DVD out. So, I'm back to where I started, but I don't have Leopard installed. There are several minor scratches on the DVD, but nothing I would expect to mess with the DVD. Another thing: I popped in the Leopard DVD, and opened the Disk Utility after this fiasco, and verified the DVD. I got this error output:

Code:
Verifying volume "disk1s3"
Checking HFS Plus volume.
Checking Extents Overflow file.
Checking Catalog file.
Checking multi-linked files.
Checking Catalog hierarchy.
Invalid node structure
The volume Mac OS X Install DVD needs to be repaired.

Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit
1 HFS volume checked
Volume needs repair
However, the "Repair Disk" button is greyed out. I don't want to go through the Apple Support Hotline.

OS X :: Kernel Panic When Trying To Install 10.5 Leopard

Oct 15, 2009

Bought a new Macbook Pro 2.8 a few days ago (newest one with longer battery), it shipped with Snow Leopard. However, I believe the Hardware is still the same as before Snow Leopard was released, so it should work with Leopard 10.5.

If I try to use a Leopard disc it just doesn't boot, or it comes up with a kernel panic. I even installed Leopard on my 2.5" in my Mac Pro first, then tried booting it on the macbook pro. Same thing, kernel panic. Have they added some kind of lock to the hardware that stops Leopard from being loaded? I thought they would only do that when new hardware is released.

OS X :: Mac Os X Snow Leopard Kernel Panic On Shutdown

Sep 4, 2009

I am pretty new to the forums but I installed snow leopard on an 2008 iMac 2.4 ghz, 3gb of ram and 250gb hard drive on September 1, 2009 and had no problems shutting down.

Then on Wednesday when I shut down it goes into a kernel panic and tells me to restart. When I go into the other user account it does not do that. I have a picture of the error log that i got when I started the computer up to submit to Apple. Can someone please help.

I have reset PRam, repaired permissions, and reinstalled Snow Leopard but recovered it from a Time Machine Backup. I do not know what to do.

Good news - found a remedy in disabling my screen saver.
I'd like to use my screen saver without getting kernel panics. I've tried erasing my drive and restoring from a back up. resetting PRAM, repaired permissions and ran Tech Tool Pro 5 (file structures and repaired permissions, everything else checked out fine).

Software :: Getting Kernel Panic Before Leopard Started

Jul 23, 2008

I have a Macbook with 10.5.4 and got a kernel panic suddenly. My Macbook was off. Yesterday evening I shut it down and everything was well with it, no problems at all. This morning I turned it on, and after the normal grey screen at the startup, I got a kernal panic before Leopard even started. I am familiar with kernel panics but not when they occur before the system started. I turned my Macbook off and on again while holding the Alt, Apple, P and R keys and waited for the chime, 3 times. After that, my Macbook started normally, no kernel panics, it just started the system and I was ready to go. However, I am really scared now. Does a kernel panic at startup indicate harddisk problems? Was it just a coincidence? I am afraid to turn my computer off, it might get a kernel panic again. I checked permissions and all seemed well, but I am hoping someone can tell me more about kernel panics at startup.

OS X :: Snow Leopard Kernel Panic When Login As User

Aug 29, 2009

I've upgraded my MBP to Snow Leopard today from Leopard and I'm getting a Kernel Panic when I login as one user. Logging in as an Admin user or a new user account is fine, and I still get the Kernel Panic if I boot up in to Safe Mode. It's obviously a problem with the user account and looking at the dump log it seems to be caused trying to mount something, but I can't for the life of me track it down.

OS X :: Installed Snow Leopard - Rebooted And Get Kernel Panic

Aug 30, 2009

Installed Snow Leopard (retail box) onto a last-gen Aluminum MacBook Pro (2.6Ghz model). Did a time machine backup. Put in CD and upgraded. Rebooted with no peripherals plugged in and I get a kernel panic. There's only one user on this machine so I can't see if it's an account problem. I did the same thing on both my Macbook Air and 17" MacBook Pro.

Question: Do I have to now Reinstall Leopard (fresh)
Then update Snow Leopard
Then restore from Backup?
OR
Install Leopard
Recover from time machine backup
Then install Snow Leopard

I don't have all day and really don't want to screw up the process. Is there any thing else that might say why this kernel panic is happening?

OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Kernel Panic While Trying To Backup With Time Machine

May 29, 2012

Over the weekend I tried to backup my MacBook Pro onto an external harddrive, and when about 23Gb out of 110Gb were completed, my mac went into a kernel panic ("You need to restart your computer. hold down the power button until it turns off, then press the power button again." in four languages). Previous backups went fine. So I did a reformat of the ext. hdd, same thing: after about 20 or so Gb of backup, the msg. pops. otherwise the mac runs without problems. Did a virus check, which came up negative.
