PowerPC :: G4 That Goes To Sleep Every 10 Seconds
Jan 25, 2007
My roomate as a powerbook g4 1.5ghz, it had been running 10.4.8. The computer will go into sleep mode randomly about every 10-15 seconds. Doesn't matter what program he's using. If he leaves the comp off for a few hours, it wont do it for a while and he can use it. Only thing we've found online is that people had that problem when they had faulty trackpads/trackpad sensors. But we don't think that is the issue we weren't getting an error message as they were in the console when it would occur. We called a local mac shop and they said it'd be 100 bucks to diagnose the problem, and probably it sounded like he would need a new logic board for another 700 + Labour.
A friend at school had the Apple Service Diagnostics 2.5.8 boot disk. He told us to give it a shot rather than paying the 100 bucks to get it "checked out" as it would most likely tell us what, if anything was wrong. We ran it, all hardware and software tests passed w/o any errors. We even tried doing a full format and reinstall of OS X 10.4.1, it got through the install procedure, and it seemed to be working ok for about 30 minutes, then suddenly the problem started again! So I that makes me think its not software related. So far two software "tests" and one full ASD hardware test got us nowhere. He's tried a lot of stuff he found online, but nothing has worked. Such as resetting all the various rams and sensors and PMU.

New 13" MBP, and the time to sleep is about 15-30 seconds. My 12" powerbook would do it in a third of the time. Any thoughts? How long does it take others?

Several times my MBA (mid 2011) woke up by itself after setting it to sleep within a few seconds. Following appeared in the console:
kernel: Wake reason: EHC2kernel: The USB device HubDevice (Port 1 of Hub at 0xfa000000) may have caused a wake by issuing a remote wakeup (2)kernel: The USB device Apple Internal Keyboard / Trackpad (Port 2 of Hub at 0xfa100000) may have caused a wake by issuing a remote wakeup (3)
I did a few resets (SMC etc.) and reinstalled Mac OS the first time. It didn't work. Then I did this all again and reinstalled Mac OS a second time. Both times I wiped the SSD. Now my MBA doesn't wake up again by itself. The Apple Hardware Test also was completed with no issues. But the above posted logs still show up when a wake it up by hitting the keyboard. Are these logs failure warnings or normal entries?

Since I've upgraded from MacOSX 10.9 to Yosemite, my MacBook Pro wakes from sleep within 30 seconds. I've tried solutions suggested on Google, but they have had no effect (and usually are about MacBook's waking up after 2 hours).Â
I'm running OSX Yosemite (10.10.1) on s
MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Late 2013)
2.4 Ghz Intel Core i5
8 GB 1600 Mhz DDR3
Intel Iris 1536 MB
256 Gb SSD with 125Gb freeÂ
To figure our what is going on I've started OSX in safe mode and logged in using the guest account. Also I've turned off WIFI and Bluetooth. The problem still occurs. The syslog shows relatively little from the moment that I select 'Sleep' and the computer wakes again (see below).

I had a problem over the weekend where my iMac would wake up seconds after putting it to sleep, and also rebooting after shutting it down. The full story can be seen on this thread here: [URL] At first I thought it was caused by an installation of iMagneto, but it eventually becomes clear that it was caused by what I presume was a corrupted folder (Application Support).
I've not been able to find out any more info about this bug outside of the Apple support forums so I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem. The original thread in the Apple forums dates back to early September so it looks like the 10.6.1 and 10.6.2 updates didn't address it. Is it a very rare bug I wonder?

I've noticed that when my rMBP (late 2013, Mavericks) turns off the display automatically while on battery (as configured via Energy Saver) and I try to wake it immediately, I get a black screen with the cursor, rather than my password/unlock screen. It remains a black screen, with the cursor moveable, for 5-10 seconds or so, and then the password/unlock screen will appear as usual.Â
This does not happen if:I don't try to wake the display/computer immediately after automatic display sleep (e.g., I wait 5-10 seconds and it's fine)I turn off the display using a hot corner and immediately wake the displayI put the computer to sleep by closing the lid and immediately wake it by opening the lidI select Sleep from the System/Apple menu and immediately wake it by pressing a key or clicking on the trackpadÂ
Why automatic display sleep is causing this temporary black screen? I currently get around it by setting the time for automatic display sleep while on battery to 10 minutes instead of the default 3 minutes to minimize the chances of needing to immediately wake the screen. I'd like to keep it at 3 minutes if possible to maximize energy savings, but the temporary black screen is really annoying if I didn't really want display sleep and consequently have to wake immediately.

I cannot type for more than seconds before any program kicks my out to the message again. It has taken 15 minutes just to type this post.Â

I have a G5 / no iSight iMac. There is rumor that a power surge occured. When the machine is powered on, there are a few seconds of static, sounds a bit like pink noise, coming out of the internal speakers. After that, it will boot properly, and there's an occasional static sound. If there is no RAM in the machine, it obviously won't boot, but there is no static at all. Just that "tone" signaling the absence of RAM. Any ideas?

I have a 17" G4 1Ghz iMac, we used it until 10 months ago when I got my new 24" Intel 2GHz machine. That new 24" iMac is now in the basement craftroom as the digital hub for pictures/video/etc., while I brought the 17" G4 1Ghz iMac out from my closet for the upstairs loft general web surfing machine. It worked for 2 days and upon shut down would not re-start. I could only hear the fan and nothing else. If I held the power button for 10 seconds upon trying to start up there was a chime that sounded for a few seconds. Once the fan is making small sound, nothing else, if I hold power button for 5-20 seconds the computer will shut down (fan turn off).
Did some online checking, found article on PMU, so I did try and re-set PMU via the apple support article.Resetting the iMac (Flat Panel) Power Management Unit (PMU). Still, no re-start. It was running the latest 10.4.x update upon being put away for 10 months. Here is a picture of the bottom, the red light is on upon trying power on, my finger is on the PMU reset button. Is there any other diagnostic thing I can do? Is there a battery on this logic board that I can check/replace? I'm 100% ok at taking it apart and trying anything to fix it.

The other day the screen started blinking randomly. It'll flicker for a few seconds and then go white with vertical grey lines for a few seconds. Then it will go back to normal. There doesn't seem to be a pattern to it. Sometimes it will go through that process for five minutes and then stop. Other times I can be working on it for hours and nothing will blink or act screwed up.

I have a G5 dual 1.8 power PC...Bought some ram put it in & booted up. Then a red light came on the logic board behind the power button. The machine wouldn't turn on....I called apple care & we rearranged the ram, now the red light is gone but my system still won't boot up. The white power light blinks every few seconds... the apple store told me sorry can't help because your machine is vintage. Even if my logic board is fried is there a place to buy one on the cheap?

I am using a Mac Mini with a Realtek USB wireless dongle to connect to the internet. The software and drivers appear connected perfectly and i see the wireless utility and I can access my wireless network, which says signal strength 100%. I connect to it and it accepts the wireless key. Says connected. Then after a few seconds the connection is lost and it says 'Disconnected'. A few seconds later it connects then disconnects and this continues indefinitely but Safari never allows me to access any webpages.Â

yesterday evening we had a power outage at my house, My G5 power mac was in sleep mode when the power went out. When the power came back on my mac came back on as if it were sleeping. The LED light in the front will stay on but the comp is non responsive. I 've tried holding the power button down for longer than 2 mins and nothing, I've tried unplugging everycord from the power mac and leaving it unplugged all night then this morning plugging everything back in and it still is non responsive, with the LED light still on. I am not hearing any nosie's coming from the power mac. I read on the apple website that it could be the PMU or SMU But I purchased the power mac late 2004 and as from what I read the only way to reset the PMU is to turn off the mac then unplug the mac and leave it unplugged for 2 mins then plugging it back in, If that were the case then leaving it unglugged all night should have reset it. I'm not sure yet as to if the power mac G5 has the SMU reset button or not because I'm at work.

My PowerBook had a battery problem (dead battery which did not charge anymore). It lost date and time several times while mac was on AC and power cord was removed. Now it has a brand new battery.
Since then, Powerbook does not go to sleep mode anymore:
- if it goes to sleep following settings of energy saver prefs, it doesn't wake up anymore, black screen and LED stays on
- if I force it to sleep through the Apple menu, it freezes with a black screen with the following white text: You Mac needs to be restarted by pressing for a few seconds on the power button.
I have tried to reboot with apple-alt-P-R and waited 5 reboot
I have tried sudo pmset -a hibernatemode 0 in the terminal
Nothing changed...
Any (good) idea out there???

It wont wake from sleep and after I reboot it, it wont even start. After the chime, the screen stays blank and the fans start roaring high after a few minutes. I brought it to the Genius Bar. They ran diagnostics on it and concluded that the problem is the 3rd party RAM. I then removed the RAM when I got home and it worked for a day. Now, the problem is back. I already reset the the VRAM and the SMU. I'll bring it back today to the Apple Store but I dont know if they will even entertain me this time as they didn't even charge me for running the hardware diagnostics last time.

I recently bought a second hand Powerbook G4 1.67. It came without a hard drive so i put a new drive in and installed Leopard on it. The problem, before I upgraded it to 10.5.7 sleep mode would work fine but since the upgrade after waking up from sleep only the mouse will work and the rest of the screen is frozen. Anyone else have this problem or know of a fix?

My G4 PowerBook (Aluminium 15" 1.67Ghz, A1104) keeps putting itself to sleep at odd times. This is without a main battery in place, and a dead PRAM battery, both of which I'm waiting to replace. When I wake it up, it tries to power up, HD spins, but then goes back to sleep without even the screen coming on. I can do this like 5 or 6 times, and then eventually it wakes up and stays awake. For a while.or the first time today it wouldn't actually even start up from a total shutdown 2 minutes revious. It was just dead. After about the 6th press of the power button it started up.

I had an iBook, now I have a powerbook. Both have the feature when I shut the computers and they are in sleep mode, the light goes from dim to bright to dim to bright..... It drives me nuts. I have to put my computer in a drawer or cover it up at night. Does anyone know how to turn the light off? or have it be constant? Is there a download that fixes it?

My G4 Rev E PowerBook won't wake from sleep. The battery died and the computer slept, but now when I boot it, it gets to 3.5 progress bars and freezes. I have tried rebooting but I can't seem to get out of the resume from sleep mode.
Any ideas? It doesn't show the grey Apple screen like it does from a fresh boot, just the progress bars that show up when the battery dies.

Last night I put my iBook to sleep and now it won't seem to wake up. The little snoring light thing is maybe half-lit, but it doesn't snore like normal--just one solid, half-way lit light. I've tried force shuttng down (holding down the power button) and force restarting (command-control-power), and neither work. I've also tried the obvious--closing lid (it was open), unplugging it (the battery still has life though).
Anything else I can do?
