PowerPC :: Blinking Screen For Few Seconds And Then White And Vertical Grey Lines
Mar 25, 2009
The other day the screen started blinking randomly. It'll flicker for a few seconds and then go white with vertical grey lines for a few seconds. Then it will go back to normal. There doesn't seem to be a pattern to it. Sometimes it will go through that process for five minutes and then stop. Other times I can be working on it for hours and nothing will blink or act screwed up.
grey screen no apple followed by blue screen with vertical lines. Graphics and logic board replaced <6 months ago. What to do? I held down shift, it gets HOT HOT and makes noises. (for safety mode) followed by a blank grey screen and blue screen. Then tried the other way (I think it's command alt delete? I don't remember) and it turned from grey (no apple symbol) to blue blank. Then third time, grey followed by blue with vertical lines, not blocky clear lines that you can see if you are close to it.
I have a G5 dual 1.8 power PC...Bought some ram put it in & booted up. Then a red light came on the logic board behind the power button. The machine wouldn't turn on....I called apple care & we rearranged the ram, now the red light is gone but my system still won't boot up. The white power light blinks every few seconds... the apple store told me sorry can't help because your machine is vintage. Even if my logic board is fried is there a place to buy one on the cheap?
Simply using my Imac for watching tv on the web, Hulu, and left to help my wife get groceries in the house. My wife checked her email and closed Safari.
I came back in roughly 10 minutes from when she shut down Safari to see a black screen with white pinstriping, and the mac being totally unresponsive. Shut down and rebooted, sent off the report to Apple, and am now here with seemingly no problems.
Needless to say, as a photographer this computer is just about as important as my camera. Should I be worried? discovered the thread to this issue, which appears to be quite extensive.
Info: iMac (24-inch Early 2008), Mac OS X (10.6.8)
I've had my MBP for about 2 weeks and yesterday a white vertical line about an inch long appeared on the right edge of the screen.
It went away after a restart, so I thought nothing of it, but now another one has appeared. Picture:
They mostly appear only on the desktop, but occasionally crop up when I'm running apps.
Is this something I can fix or is it a video adapter issue? I have searched and come up with some similar motherboard issues but they are mostly older macs.
When I boot up my MacBook Pro (Unibody 17" 2011 model), it maks the CD noise, chimes the apple chime, then shows a grey/white screen. normally, this would progress to a grey screen with the apple logo on it, followed by the login screen, however in my case, the computer seems to just shut down. the fans keep running, so i know it isn't powering down completely. i can't change the volume/etc. after the computer has done this, so i'm assuming it isn't a display issue (also the display flashes white). does anybody know what this sequence of events is a symptom of? i'd really like to get my computer working again.
My problem is a screen that is lit but grey, with vertical lines very faint in the background. when connected to a monitor all is well. I have replaced the screen with a second hand one from ebay and it is exactly the same. what is more likely- both screens are duff or is there something obvious i'm missing. i was given the ibook by a friend replaced the harddrive and gave it to my son and it worked for six weeks perfectly until the display suddenly went never to return.
I put my PowerBook to sleep and left home with it about an hour ago. I just opened it and it woke up but the screen was black. I turned it off and back on. The white screen with the apple and progress wheel came on for a normal period of time, but then the screen went all white and there were several uneven horizontal lines across the middle and froze there. I forced a restart and the same thing happened but this time I got the semi transparent window that says need to restart. I did that and I got the same screen without the message.
They started real small I thought it was just me then an hour later it expanded, 6 hours passed, it's a least 5 inches wide.. It started on the right, around where the time is shown.
my screen keeps blinking on and off every 10 seconds or so and if I let it rest for a while it settles down but everything is missing from the screen except my screen saver photo.
I have a problem with the display of an iMac G5 20". It shows up as vertical lines of small squares.
If I change screen resolution, the display will look ok for about half a second, and then it comes back again. Anyone had seen this before? (This is does not look like the usual problem with iMac and thin vertical lines.)
For the past few days, my screen has been going in and out of being entirely covered by 1px white lines that occasionally flicker blue or something. Like, when I'm typing (as I am now) if the window is positioned one pixel off, the blinking cursor won't appear (and on my black screensaver, it looks more like it's white/light grey because literally every other 1px line is white). Well, this morning it got weird again, but it hasn't gone back to normal!
I have a Mid-2007 Santa Rosa Macbook Pro, 2.4 Ghz Core 2 Duo- LED Screen, backlight works fine and if I turn it completely down ('off') the problem persists. I have Boot Camp installed, and the problem persists when booting into Windows as well.
I looked around and tried a few fixes to no avail (slept the screen, reset the PRAM, messed with the resolution a bit).
I took a screenshot and everything shows up normal. I had to finish a paper I was working on, and the screen was getting unbearable, so I tried plugging it into a mate's external lcd and the image came up completely fine, no vertical lines!
So, what could this be, and what could I do to fix it? Could this be the infamous problem with the Nvidia 8600GT M graphics card- so would I have to get the logic board repaired!? (UGH I hope not) Could it just be a connection issue? I did install a new hard drive, a new stick of memory, and Leopard, but that was months ago! Anything else I might be missing? and I hope this problem isn't too serious!
P.S.-on a side-note, has anybody done the upgrade to the latest firmware for the fans (SMC something)? Should I give that a try (or should I do it anyway, regardless of whether it could help)? When it was released, I heard of some bad experiences, so I stayed away.
Whenever I watch videos or anything that moves I will see a line going through the video. Its not very visible, But its still there. Some say it could be a virus, others say hardware problems.
Hi I'm connecting an external monitor to my macbook pro and am experiencing regular vertical lines throughout the external screen. I've tried DVI-D and VGA. I've tried changing resolutions. I have taken a screen shot of the monitor but this screen shot shows a clear image. Attached is a picture of what it looks like. Hard to spot as taken with my isight. (Ignore the cable hanging down).

I've had it sent into Apple once for the horizontal flashing lines, but these are new... it's like a gray vertically striped film covers the whole screen, and unlike the horizontal lines, shaking/hitting the screen does not help.
After installing Snow Leopard, I noticed that when I select a web page from the Safari startup grid (medium 6 web pages), the screen turns white with many vertical lines. This lasts for approximately 4-5 seconds before the web page loads. Any suggestions on how to fix this problem?

My MacBookPro 15" 5.3 worked fine until today, All the blacks (rgb 0,0,0) on the screen become red stripes.
When I boot into Linux or Windows the same problem appears, so it's probably a hardware problem.
I have no expensive adaptor to connect to an external lcd screen, so I don't know yet if the problem is in the mac screen or in the cabling or somewhere else...
Here are 2 screenshots of black squares a drawed in Illustrator, one taken on the mac (cmd + shift + 3)
one taken with a camera (where you can see the red lines)
I want to avoid the MacStore as I want to avoid missing my laptop for a month...
I have a G5 about 2 years old. Recently a pale pink vertical line appeared down the screen, another about 2 weeks later and today a third line appeared. They do not affect the screen's visibility, but I wander if anyone else has found a resolution to this minor problem (without having to go out and purchase a replacement.
I replaced my cracked LCD screen on my 17" macbook pro, and upon firing up you hear the chime, and the apple logo comes up just fine. Then after that it goes to horizontal lines, and no image on it. If I plug in an external, it shows up just fine on it, and if I put in the original cracked screen, I can see my desktop and everything as well.
I have a late 2007 2.2ghz MBP. It seems that the video cable is failing, as I often open it up from sleep and get only half an image on the screen. Image capture does not capture this, so I know that it is hardware related. It does not happen on my external monitor.
It is getting more frequent, and has been going on for about a month, The warranty expired in late September (lucky me!)
This is my first time having some serious problems with my first MacBook, and I was hoping someone out there could help me out. This macbook was bought on June 2006 (a white MB) with I believe the 10.4.6 OSX on. I gave it to my dad which is across the world and he called desperate a few days ago saying that the system won't boot up. When the power button is pushed on and the system starts, rings the Apple bell and soon after colorful vertical lines show up across the screen and the system freezes. Here's what I found out from my research on the topic, for some macs of that generation, when the system updates from 10.4.6 to 10.4.7 some video card issue causes this glitch to happen. The solution: zap the PRAM (by holding control + command + p + r when booting the computer.) My dad has tried this approach many times and it doesn't solve it. We also tried booting it with the installation disc and that didn't work. We also tried the safe mode boot and that also didnt work.
I was using Audacity on my mac running 10.4.11, on some seriously large files (85MB mp3s were exported from these original wav files!), when during this these red vertical lines started popping up on my screen; mainly where a window had been moved. These lines haven't gone away and I'm not sure how to fix this problem. I'm stumped! Having repaired permissions and run the Disk Utility from the Install disk, I'm at a total loss. The intro/gray screen, apple logo doesn't have the red lines, but every other screen does.
It started a week ago while playing Civilization V on my iMac : the screen suddenly displayed vertical blue (altered with dark blue) vertical straight lines, the sound was still working, i could hear the music from the game. Then the screen turned black and i couldn't hear anything anymore, i had to restart the computer with the apple button. The same happened again with civilization, once with green lines. And today, while restarting after this bug, the screen displayed multicolor lines instead of the grey wallpaper with the apple.
