I have a powerbook g4 17 in a1107. The back light does not work. I am not at all sure what the display resolution is. If I install an lcd screen with anything other than the original resolution, will the notebook be able to support it?
View 1 RepliesI have had my Macbook for almost three years now, and for the last month, the backlight for my screen has gone off. However, when I put the brightness down to 0 when the light is off, and put it up by 1 it sometimes turns on for a couple minutes/seconds/hours. Any help? By the way, I am using Boot Camp, I do not know if this happens on my Mac Side, because it comes up with a "stop" sign when I try to boot it up.

I have tried a SMC reset 3 times, I have tried deleted the plist file and I have tried the finger over the isight lens and nothing is working.
The buttons work fine and it increases and decreases on the screen, it is just there is NO LIGHT whatsoever!
I don't know what else to do and don't want to send my laptop off to get fixed if it is just a simple thing I can do.

My iBook G4 is out of warranty and the backlight goes out. Sometimes its seconds, sometimes minutes, sometimes days. Its really annoying because besides that, the computer works perfectly. I want to take it apart and see if theres anything I can do to it (is there?) I know its risky, but I am willing to do it, so don't tell me anything about the risk involved. I would just like to know if its possible (thinking it might be a loose wire or something?) and if it is possible, does anyone have any tips or point me to a good tutorial on how to do this? I just really want to get this fixed, especially with Leopard 6 days and 6 hours away (and 45 minutes and 30 seconds).
View 21 Replies View RelatedI own a macbook pro unibody A1286. I spilled some soda on it and I followed everything that you would do when a liquid spill happens. After a few days I turned on the macbook pro and I hear the charm and can see the screen with light on it. The back light had gone out on the unit. At first I thought It would be the screen, so I ordered a new screen and tried it out. With the new screen it is the same, the back light for the lcd wont turn on. Everything else on the macbook pro is functional except for the back light.
I even own a mini display port to HDMI adapter and hooked that up to my TV and it worked perfectly. The isight camera works, all the ports work, speakers work, optical drive works. Just the Back light on the LCD does not.
My keyboard backlight isn't working... whenever I try to turn it up it gives a circle with a line through it. I have read that there is an ambient light sensor that turns off the keyboard backlight when it is too bright, however that has NEVER happened before and I have used it in direct sunlight and the backlight still obviously works. It's not even bright right now but it won't work. This is very frustrating, there should be no sensor that turns it off it should be the brightness I tell it to be.

View 6 Replies View Relatedi have had a 13" Macbook pro for around a year now, and i never really noticed that it didnt have a backlight on the keyboard until my mom bought a 17" one (what a biter, amirite?) and it had the awesome backlight. I've tried researching this and i've downloaded labtick and it doesn't work.
Edit: I've also never spilled anything on the keyboard or anywhere. It's been like this since purchase

This happened to me a while back and I just got the laptop back the other day. They had put in a new keyboard (along with a new hard drive and optical drive - but those are another story).
Just now, my backlight came on since I turned off the room's main light and turned on a small lamp and lo and behold...the backlight is messed up again! Same as it was before, I know for a fact it was working earlier today.
All I've done is change the ram and use migration assistant to get a couple things over. I'm not sure how I could have damaged the light by taking out the 3 screws for the ram door...I didn't put barely any pressure on them. I'm not sure if either of those two things caused it but I'm shocked.
Now I have to give up my computer again. Nearest apple store is over an hour, it was 3 weeks last time I gave my computer up (gave it to school's IT crew, who forwards it to apple - but I get a loaner this way).

I acquired a gimped Powerbook G4 from one of our 'daughter' companies. The laptop works fine when using the A/C adapter. If I unplug the A/C adapter while the power is on, the screen/keyboard lights will go off. However, the hard drive is still spinning. If I plug the A/C adapter back in, the LCD backlight comes back on, but it does not display what was on the screen. I have to hold the power button down for a few seconds to power it down completely. Upon turning it back on, everything works fine again. Does this sound like a battery issue or motherboard problem? I have checked the battery serial number against the recall list and this one is supposably good.
View 2 Replies View RelatedSo I contacted Apple this morning regarding the LCD Backlight Bleed on my iMac (24", early 2008, 2.8 ghz) They made me reset the PRAM, which I figured wouldn't work, and the issue is still there.
They say it'll have to go in for servicing, and I live nowhere near an Apple Store, so they gave me the location of the nearest London Drugs. Am I going to get the same quality of service as I would from an Apple Store? And what is the exact process that they use, do they just replace it with a new LCD?Also, he said that it will be covered under Applecare unless it is ruled as accidental damage, he said that much of the time, the issue is caused by pressure on the back of the case, and that if that was the case, it wouldn't be covered.I can't really see how this would cause it, and I haven't ever put any pressure or anything on the back, but i did buy the iMac used, what are the chances of this being ruled accidental damage?I have the bleed in all four corners of the screen, if that makes any difference.
While taking apart ibook to replace harddrive on grapghite 466 , I ran into trouble. In taking out the backlight cable, the whole plastic receptor (little white plasatic at J4) on the motherboard came off as well. This is a little part (1/4 x 1/8inch). I can't tell if it was soldered on or just slips on the motheboard since tiny bits of plastic broke off. Can someone tell me if/how this can be repaired.

Both have screen issues as follows: iMac A - dead & stuck pixels, feint grey horizontal bar running along bottom portion of screen, bottom left corner has noticeable backlight bleed. iMac B - dead & stuck pixels, yellow tinge in bottom portion of screen. So here are my questions. Which iMac should I keep and submit for repair? (does it matter and why or why not?) How does the actual repair get done? For example, if I submit iMac B for repair, could I end up with a grey bar or backlight prob like in iMac A?
Are there multiple layers to the display when they fix specific issues? For example, let's say the dead pixels are on one layer while the yellow tinge is on a different layer, or are both issues on the same layer? I ask because if there are two or more separate layers, there is more of a chance to mess up so I may want to submit the iMac that has the least amount of issues.
Lastly and most importantly, has anyone submitted their iMac for screen repair for these issues and got it back 100% repaired? (no dead/stuck pixels, yellowing, grey bar, backlght bleed) These are #4 and #5 in terms of the number of replacements I've gotten now and I'm sick of it so I may opt to go for repair on either of these existing machines instead of going for replacement #6. But do you think a 6th replacement would be better than going for repair on either of these? Or not?
I have tried a few thinsgs to try and get it to work including reseating the cables and that has not helped. As the title says, the back light works as i can see the screen getting blacker/greyer. Also the external output works as well. I'm not sure what to do at this point because I can't find information on an inverter board for the LCD, only the LED backlight think this could be an issue with the video card 8600M or is my LCD dead and I need a new one?
On a side note I have taken very good care of this computer, no drops, making sure the HDD is parked before moving, having it in a protective case, etc. The only difference is that I gave this to my sister to use and after a few days it died. (seems everything she gets that's electronic dies these days, meaning I probably shouldn't give her anything that has a circuit board in it....)
Just had to replace the logic board on my PMG4 DP 1.25GHz machine. For the life of me, I can't remember the operating temperature before I swapped the board. Currently it's running at 130F - 140F. This seem about right for the other folks running these machines?

Reason for the question is that I have one of each, and am going to sell the iBook. I'd like to transfer one of the 256 Mb sticks from the PB to the iBook and then replace that stick with a 1 Gb stick.
So i bought a 3.50 cable from ebay that plugs into the back of my Powermac G4 and allows it to be put on a tv via svideo or composite vga to svideo/composite so i plug it in and i get nothing on the TV so like idk what i did wrong i adjusted the video on the Powermac to 800 x 600 (or the smallest it would go) and i still get nothing except for a black screen?

I have downloaded the latest macam and installed it, dragged the component over to the folder, and copied the component into the library/quicktime folder. When I open macam it recognizes that I have the ps3 eye hooked up, but the screen is black. Skype and yahoo also recognize the camera, but the cam monitor screen is black. I really want this to work, and have seen many posts from people with the emac/eye/macam combo and a lot of people have said it works.

Let the pictures speak for themselves. Theres an odd thing where it displays 1gb at the bottom but 2gb at the top in system profiler. But activity monitor confirmed the 2gb does in fact work. I have a PCI USB2.0 card rev2.2 that I removed from my old G4 MDD.
I upgraded to a used G5 2ghz DP (M9032LL/A) system which has "three open full-length PCI-X slots: one 133MHz, 64-bit slot and two 100MHz, 64-bit slots" from what the specs on [URL] says.
I was told that a PCI rev2.x card will work in a PCI-X slot but when I tried the system didn't even power on.
So... should it work? does it matter which PCI-X slot? or was that guy confused between PCI-X and PCI-e?
Hoping it will work because 3 USB ports isn't enough when you have a WACOM, Scanner, Printer, Mouse, Keyboard, USB Drive, etc...
I'll put a CD in, the drive makes some noises, and then it just ejects. Is my drive screwed?
