MacBook Pro :: Keyboard Backlight Control Buttons Not Work
Dec 4, 2010
My keyboard backlight buttons dont work. The keyboard backlighting works when I'm in low light conditions, but I can't control them with the buttons. When I press them it comes up with this:
I looked all over the system preferences pane, and although I can change the setting for the screen itself, I cannot over-ride the light sensor controlling when I can use the backlit keyboard.
There are some cases where I want the backlighting on, but when I press the button to turn it on it won't let me because the sensor is picking up too much ambient lighting.
My keyboard backlight isn't working... whenever I try to turn it up it gives a circle with a line through it. I have read that there is an ambient light sensor that turns off the keyboard backlight when it is too bright, however that has NEVER happened before and I have used it in direct sunlight and the backlight still obviously works. It's not even bright right now but it won't work. This is very frustrating, there should be no sensor that turns it off it should be the brightness I tell it to be.
i have had a 13" Macbook pro for around a year now, and i never really noticed that it didnt have a backlight on the keyboard until my mom bought a 17" one (what a biter, amirite?) and it had the awesome backlight. I've tried researching this and i've downloaded labtick and it doesn't work.
Edit: I've also never spilled anything on the keyboard or anywhere. It's been like this since purchase
The backlight still lights up behind the keyboard but only brightly in a V shape in the middle of the keyboard, the rest of it is very dim.
This happened to me a while back and I just got the laptop back the other day. They had put in a new keyboard (along with a new hard drive and optical drive - but those are another story).
Just now, my backlight came on since I turned off the room's main light and turned on a small lamp and lo and behold...the backlight is messed up again! Same as it was before, I know for a fact it was working earlier today.
All I've done is change the ram and use migration assistant to get a couple things over. I'm not sure how I could have damaged the light by taking out the 3 screws for the ram door...I didn't put barely any pressure on them. I'm not sure if either of those two things caused it but I'm shocked.
Now I have to give up my computer again. Nearest apple store is over an hour, it was 3 weeks last time I gave my computer up (gave it to school's IT crew, who forwards it to apple - but I get a loaner this way).
Water spilled on the right side of my keyboard, but everything worked fine right after. However a day later the Delete, Eject and Volume buttons stop working. I took off the keys and cleaned underneath with a Qtip. still not working.
I recently purchased a new keyboard. It seems that the top keys will not work even when enabled. Is this because I am running OS X10.5.8 and the minimum is 10.6.8?
The play/pause and skip/rewind buttons on my keyboard are not working with the latest version of iTunes (11.3.1). I've read about fixes related to the Google Chrome extension, but I don't have that extension. I noticed that the buttons work with Spotify but not with iTunes. When I test the buttons on iTunes, I make sure that Spotify is completely closed. The play/pause function is especially important to me, as I use it to transcribe interviews quickly.

I have an iMac G5, running OS 10.5.8, and a new Apple Keyboard with Numeric Keypad. My keyboard volume control does not work. Any have ideas as to why ? (I have a similar set-up at work with no volume problems.)

Completed the Safari 5.1.4 update late last night and since then when trying to use youtube. Videos will play sometimes. Other times they will play but I have no control over volume, search bar, play buttons and the like. Also the biggest issue I am having is the like, share, add and other buttons don't work.

I used to just closed my Mac instead of pressing the shutdown button; I tried this time but I cannot shut it down anymore, also my keyboard cannot control the volume or turn on the keyboard-light. Also I remember there is like a back-up shortcut (or something like that don't know what is it exactly named) consisting of three keyboard button.
I have a Macbook Pro (Newest gen.) and sometimes the keyboard backlight wont turn on. I suspect it to happen when I have had the Macbook on standby, but I don't know for sure if that is what does it.
Then i press the backlight-adjust buttons on the keyboard, this OSD-symbol turns up: http://peecee.dk/uploads/122010/Scre..._big_thumb.png
Is there any fix to the keyboard backlight problem? My keyboard work only setting manually on. It won`t set keyboard lights on when it`s at the darkroom etc. Is there any fix for this problem?
In regards to a 2010 13" macbook pro's illuminated keyboard.
1.) Is there a way you can make the keyboard's backlight become brighter in low light situations? 2.) Is there a way for the backlit keyboard to turn off in lit rooms and turn on in dark rooms?
For some reason the backlit keyboard becomes dimmer in low light situations. I'm finding it really irritating. I have a feeling this is the way it is suppose to be so that the keyboard doesn't blind you. Any programs to hack the light sensor?
My Macbook pro keyboard backlight not working since the first day I bought. F5 & F6 keys are working but the light didn't turn on... Is there any setting to change or?
For the first time last night, I was using my new 13" MBA ultimate and noticed the keyboard back light was not working. Is the some way it has been turned off, and if so how do I turn it back on?
I was surfing the web when my keyboard backlight started to fade on and offat somewhat regular intervals. After about a mintue or two of this, the backlight just went off all together. Now, when I press the F5 or F6 key to brighten or dim the keyboard, the keyboard backlight does not respond. The usual screen pop-up that shows how bright or dim the keys are no longer increases or decreases but shows the symbol of O with a slash through (like the no smoking symbol).

I just installed Windows XP on my new alum MBP, and I can turn the black light on the screen and keyboard up and down but I can't totally turn off the back light on the keyboard.
My backlit keyboard has recently started to act up. It has recently started at random times to not let me manually adjust backlight at all, randomly turning it off and disabling the two buttons to adjust it. It is a Unibody MacBook 2.4
Just got a new MBP 15" AG this week and was wondering if you can adjust the sensitivity of the keyboard backlight. It seems to come on even in a fairly well lit room and I mainly only need it in a completely dark room. So I find myself hitting the backlight keys to turn it off and then whenever it wakes from sleep goes back to full bright. Didn't find anything in the keyboard preferences and found a program called Lab Tick which will take care of the level on wake.
In SysPref I found the < Illuminate Under Low Light > button.
I can see the backlight has come on , but it is not at all bright. At least it is nowhere near as bright when compared to a 13" MBP we own. Is there an " Intensity " setting for the keyboard backlight?
so I got my MBP last week. It's the 15" base unibody model. Is there any way to have the computer setup to automatically turn on the backlight keyboard using ac power? Then do the opposite using the battery?
it only illuminates in bright settings. if its dark, it wont illuminate. seems backwards to me, why is it doing this? i dont think it was last night when i first got it.
first macbook pro had a blemish on it. now this one the keyboard isnt backlighting correctly.
just read to put my hand over the webcam and it seemed to kick it back into gear. but then it dies and only takes bright settings to illuminate.
edit: maybe its hitting the sensor (some light from the window at a weird area) in a darker room and it works fine i think.
I have a 15 inch MacBook Pro core i5 and I would like the keyboard backlight to turn off automatically when I go into fullscreen mode when I watch a video. Is there any setting I can change, so I don't have to turn it off manually every time I watch a movie?
