So I plug my external hard drive into my IMac via a usb port, the drive turns on but the drive never appears on my desktop. How do I access my external hard drive when it is not recognized automatically?

I recently bought a new Mac mini and Seagate goflex 3TB external hard drive. The computer is awesome but if I have the external hard drive plugged in, it messes with the restart/shutdown. The mac will act like it's powering down and go to the blank white screen but will never turn off and shows the little gray lines that go in that circular motion at the bottom of the screen. If I disconnect the USB from the Mac then it completes its power down. I've tried the suggestions of repairing disks or disk permissions, as well as resetting the PRAM, which have worked sometimes but the the problem reoccurs. I've also tried ejecting the external hard drive before shutting down on the Mac but I'll either get an error message or nothing happens and then the above shutdown issue occurs.Â
Why does this happen and what can I do so that I can always have the external plugged in and not have to manually unplug it so the Mac can shutdown?Â

I am a photographer. I use 4 X 1TB LaCie external hard drives to store my digital images. 2 as masters for different business segments and 2 as their back-ups. They are daisy-chained using Firewire 800. Recently my G5 has stopped recognizing one of the drives. Is there any way to get my machine to re-recognize the missing drive? I have rewired the four drives to see if there was a problem with the cabling, but this does not appear to be the case. I am coming up to the 1 year warranty period on this drive and need to get it back to LaCie if there is no other solution.

I am trying to access my existing external hard drive through the machine and although this lights up when plugged in, it doesn't appear in the finder. Other Memory sticks work without problem.
It is a Western Digital Elements 160GB Portable Hard Drive that has worked and continues to do so without problem on my ancient iBook G4.

I have used a Samsung HX 1Tb external hard drive under OSX Snow Leopard with absolutely no problem. Since I upgraded to the free (improved?!?) OSX Mavericks my Macbook Pro cannot "see" my hard drive. All I get when I plug it in is the following message -
my MacBook thinks that the hard drive is formatted for windows - but why should it work OK under Snow Leopard but not with Mavericks? I don't want to simply reformat the external drive because I'll lose all the files stored on it.Is there suitable software/Apps that I can use to let my Mac access this external hard drive.Incidentally my partners new Macbook Air can still read this hard drive.Â

I had accidently formatted my 500GB to use for Time Machine, but realized, I didn't need that much storage, so reverted to the 250GB for Time Machine and the 500GB for storage. But it seems, in the formatting stage (for Time Machine), it set my file system for the 500GB to Mac OS Journaled. I can see this hard drive on the Mac, but it does not recognize it in Windows (although I hear the USB plug in sound, doesn't show up in "My Computer"). Does this have to do with the formatting? If so, how can I format it so that the external hard drives can be read by both Mac OS X and Windows? Does it require moving my data (before formatting?)?

The external LaCie drive is in one of those beautiful boxes designed by a guy named Porsche. It's connected via Fire Wire. I have my iPhoto library stored on it. It was working just fine for the past two days after I first connected it.
Now it does not show on the Desktop. It is identified only as "Unknown device" in "About This Mac." iPhoto doesn't recognize it. I've looked at the other threads on this subject here and have reset the PRAM. Disk Utility recognized it for a while and said the disk was OK. Now Disk Utility does not recognize it at all.
I turned off the drive and turned it back on. That resulted in an alarming series of beeps, almost like somebody was sending the Morse code symbol for "E" over and over again. I turned the drive off and then on again. Now the light goes on and the drive whirs nicely. I am using System 10.6.2. Or rather, at this point it is using me.
I have a new seagate 500gb hard-drive, it is recognized on Disk Utilities and not only that it also says the hard drive is 2tb.

I just installed a new internal hard drive into my macbook as my old one was failing. Before doing this I backed up all of my information through Time Machine onto a Seagate FreeAgent external hard drive. I've been using this external hard drive for the past two years and I've never had any problems with my macbook mounting it. Once I had all of my personal information backed up I took out the external hard drive and then proceeded to take out my old internal hard drive and installed the new one. I installed the Mac operating system and the Macbook started up just fine but when it came time to reload all of my personal setting using Time Machine my macbook didn't recognize that there was an external drive plugged in. I know it isn't the external drive as it mounts just fine on other laptops. how I can get my macbook to mount the drive so that I can transfer all of my information onto this new internal drive?Â

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have had some problems for about the past year with the front USB port on my 2009 13in Macbook Pro 5.5.
As you know, there are 2 USB ports on the left side on a 13inch Macbook pro. The one closest to me (the front one) works fine when I use it with a flash drive. But when I connect my external 7200RPM external drive to it, after about a minute, it ejects then re-recognizes the disk.
I video edit with FCP and use the external as one of my scratch disks.
At first I thought maybe it was the cord or the drive that was messed up. But then I connected my other external drive to this port and the same thing happened. But when I connected it to the back USB port, everything works fine. I haven't had any trouble. So i make sure it's connected to that port when using the external.

I have a late 2009 iMac with Firewire 800 input on the back. I have a Western Digital Passport external hard drive with USB Micro-B input that I would like to connect to the Firewire (4 USB inputs aren't nearly enough on the iMac). I have a Macbook Pro running OS X Yosemite Ver 10.10.1. Whenever I plug in my Apple headphone it in, the iTunes automatically starts and I would like to disable the same. I am talking on FaceTime using my head phone, (I am guessing some small movements of headphone triggering this) the iTunes starts automatically and the songs start to play during the FaceTime call.Â
Does any one know how to disable the iTunes from not starting up automatically, whenever a Headphone is inserted into Mac. I can start iTunes whenever I want like any other application. But I just don’t want any automatic starting of iTunes, when I plug the headphone!

So I bought that LG HD-DVD/Blu-Ray drive for my Mac Pro. I used the extra SATA ports near the fan to install it, and it works great while using OSX, but it won't work in Windows.
I read somewhere about enabling AHCI or something like that in Windows so it can recognize the spare SATA port, and therefore recognize the Blu-Ray drive, but I cannot figure it out for the life of me.
It's awful confusing...
I want to be able to rip my Blu-Ray movies onto my computer to pop them onto the tv, but the only hurdle is having Windows recognize the drive. Any help at all would be very appreciated.
I have a mac air version 10.9.3 running on mavericks and whenever I plug in my apple earphones, or any earphones with a mic and remote on the cable, itunes starts playing music without me touching anything. It plays music every time the contact plug of the earphones moves in the computer (like if I move the computer and the jack plug gets jiggled) and I don't know how to keep it from doing that. I tried quitting itunes but it didn't work.

Then I went to "library" and then "consolidate", and it moved all my library over to my external. I can verify that my songs are all there on my externalHowever, now, itunes won't play any songs of mine. I double click on the song in itunes and it just wont play. There's no error message, there's no exclamation point, it just won't play. Any idea what is goign on? Preferences still shows that my library is directing to the external
