I have an external hard drive that I have been using for back ups for several months, but now I get an error message that says, "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer". I looked up other peoples issues with this, and they have used things like disk warrior to fix it, but I am not very interested in saving what's on the hard drive anyways. I just want to clear out the hard drive and start fresh.

1. I had a problem with my mac where it took hours to load each time I turned it on, would only work when power was plugged in etc. so I had to reformat my mac hard drive (when I tried to veriify it said repair, that wouldn't work). So i'm starting with a recently reformatted, clean mac.Â
2. Before doing this I reformatted my external hard drive (whilst on windows machine) to FAT32 (so I can use on both windows and mac) so that I could back up my files.Â
3. I then transferred files from mac onto external hard drive and then also put them on a windows machine.Â
4. After reformatting mac hard drive when I then tried to transfer files back onto the mac I get the 'not readable' error.Â

I just bought a new 1 TB external hard drive for back up purposes. When i connect it via USB to my Snow Leopard macbook pro, it gives me a "this disk not readable by this computer message". I click ignore, and it lets me do whatever i want to the disk - read, write, etc. I have tried repair disk - tells me it's good to go, and tried reformatting several times - thought not zero disk data or the 7 pass bs.

When I booted the computer, it said the drive was not readable or usable or something along that lines so I went to disk utility and erased the hard drive with the Mac OS Extended (Journaled) setting selected. Now the drive seems to work fine but I haven't tested it much. Is everything ok with this drive now? Is Journaled the best setting? Is there a better setting to use for video editing. View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a hard drive that I connect to my computer via an IDE to USB adapter. It works quite well, most of the time. A couple days ago I tried copying a large file to the drive (which is in FAT-16 I think) and the copy froze after 28 MB. The hard drive failed to eject, so I just disconnected it without ejecting. After I dismissed the device removal warning, I immediately plugged the HD back in and opened disk utility. I tried to reformat it, but the computer froze and my screen dimmed and the warning came up telling me to reboot in several different languages.
Now, whenever I plug in the hard drive, it is not acknowledged by the computer at all. I always end up unplugging it after a couple minutes. After I unplug it, a folder with the name of the drive (which happens to be "untitled") appears on the desktop, but I can't do anything with it. This folder is classified as a disk and it is acknowledged by Disk Utility. A couple minutes after I disconnect the HD, Mac OS X always quits and I have to reboot. How can I repair this hard drive? How can I get Disk Utility to acknowledge it?

So, yesterday I moved my wife's iPhoto library to her WD external HD so she could install Snow Leopard on her iMac. Today I get home and she meets me in the driveway telling me that her HD fell of her filing cabinet and the computer won't recognize it. I am hesitant to click the (Initialize) button for fear of an accidental formatting which would subsequently erase our iPhoto library (ALL OF OUR PHOTOS -> 90GB of photos). I have a Macbook Pro with an External 2TB My Book for Mac Hard drive. I used it earlier this week, ejected and disconnected it, went to sleep and then tried to use it the next day and the error message: "The disk you inserted is not readable by this computer." popped up. I recently had a friend fill my hard drive with movies and DVD's. Until this morning I had no problem with viewing the files on my computer and through my tv, other than the fact that I had to download VLC player on my computer as the files were all avi. Last night I noticed that two of the individual files either wouldn't load, or dropped out half way through. I fixed these files by repairing them individually, which solved the problem. This afternoon, my files were working perfectly, with no problems at all. Â

with cloning/copying the content one an external hard drive onto a new external hard drive. Basically, I have a 500GB FW400 drive which I use to store my media files. It's full, so I purchased a 1TB FW800 drive to replace it. Obviously, I thought I could simply copy and paste the media files from the old drive to the new one.I cannot copy the media files to my internal drive first as my internal drive is only 250GB and nearly full itself.I have used Disk Utility to attempt to close the old drive to the new drive, but keep getting "insufficient space" errors.
View 9 Replies View RelatedRecently I bought 2 identical WD Scorpio Blue 1TB hard drives for my macbook pro 13 inch 2010. My aim is to replace the internal hard drive with one of the two I just purchased and use it as my system drive with Lion, Windows and Data partitions. And for the other hard drive I want to use it as a full disk back up for the internal drive (now 1TB hard drive). After I was done with setting up both windows and mac and data transfer, when I booedt into the recovery partition from the internal drive to clone the drive to the external drive, the disk utility gave me this error (Could not validate source - error 254). I also tried using Carbon Copy Cloner but it only could clone partitions, not the entire drive. Yesterday I downloaded a copy of Clonezilla. It worked fine until it had to clone an exFAT partition (my data partition). The exFAT partition appeared as 'RAW' partition in clonezilla. As a result, the whole partition appeared to be full and clonezilla had to copy every single blocks of data in that partition and the estimated time remaining was about 30 hours. So clonezilla is out too. Just want to ask if there is any program/application (bootable or not) which allows can do a full disk clone to an external hard drive.
