I was just wondering what the dual boot options are for booting linux on a MacBook, does it go through Bootcamp or are there other options? Obviously I would prefer a native installation over a virtual machine.

This proved to be impossible as the parts weren't old enough to support OS 9. Now I have a new idea, put Yellow Dog Linux on it and see if it has classic environment. Is this possible. Can YDL run OS 9 apps?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI plan on purchasing a Mac Mini server in the upcoming months and I'd like to be able to dual boot Windows on it when I need to. However the Mac OS Server (as far as I can tell) doesn't come with the Boot camp utility. So here's my conundrum: Do I ignore the server version of Mac and install Snow Leopard client with boot camp assistant or do I just use Disc Utility to create a second partition on one of the Mini drives and install Windows like any other computer? and keep using the server version of Snow Leopard?
I guess what I;m asking is which of these is the better option?
Installing Client and using Boot Camp Utility?
Or Creating a Partition manually and installing Windows on that?
(would my second option even work and would installing boot camp drivers after that process do any good or would it just bunk the Windows install?)
I am interested in booting another OS, Besides OSX, such as linux, from a Flashdrive. I was wondering how I might go about actually getting this to work with OSX. I've found some versions of Linux that can boot from a Flashdrive, but I'm not sure how I would get my Macbook to recognize it.

I have the Windows XP Black Edition image file, when I hit "Continue without Disk" on Fusion, next options are "Use installation disk image file", "Use existing virtual disk" or "Create custom virtual machine".
If I just have the .iso, what option should I go with?
So my old 15" early 2006 Macbook Pro (1,1) no loger recognizes the primary display. I can use an external monitor just fine, but when I go into System Profiler, it's like my primary display disappeared. I reinstalled Snow Leopard, reset PRAM, NVRAM, repaired my permissions, tried to update my mac, but litterally nothing I have tried has worked.
It started when I tried to install both Windows 7 and Ubuntu. After completing the Windows 7 installation, I restarted my computer and it just hung on the Apple logo. I could feel the fans begining to spin really fast and it felt like my laptop was on fire. I restarted my computer, let it cool down, and it hung at the Apple logo again. I rebooted it a final time, and nothing. Black screen. No backlight or image...nothing.

I'm trying to install Damn Small Linux on iMac G3,64MB ram and 333Mhz processor. The problem is that i'm not able to boot the cd. Under windows machine...it boot normally,but if i put it on G3 and hold 'C',it doesn't boot (but i think it try to read the cd becouse i see a small icon with "face"/"?" on the screen).

I had to put in a new hard drive, so I put in a Seagate, 7200 RPM, 3.0 gb/s, 250 GB (just came yesterday). I'm not having any luck getting it to boot from a Linux disc though; my friend gave me a version of Feisty Fawn, no luck. I tried burning a copy of ubuntu, version 7.10 for PPC, from Apple's native utility but that didn't work either. I know that the super drive is reading, though, because if I put in my Macbook Pro copy of OS X it gives me angry messages. When I press the option button on restart, I get a blue screen with two buttons; a return button and a forward arrow button. Also, what's the right way to burn Ubuntu to a disc; I tried using FireStarter FX but it kept on telling me that burning could not be completed.

It didn't crash or anything.When I go to log in to OS X it takes me directly to the Darwin Unix window and asks me to log in there.and into the computer.If I type in (exit) it takes me right back to the same place.I put in the Panther install disc (held down the c key) and selected to boot up on system 9.9.2 so I can use the computer and research online.

I have a MacBook Pro that came with Leopard. I am wondering if it is possible for me to shrink my Leopard partition and then install Tiger on a second partition. I have seen a similar thread about starting with Tiger and then adding a Leopard partition, but I want to go the other way around.
Also, is it possible for me to do this without having to reinstall Leopard, such as making a partition with Boot Camp and then tweaking it with the Disk Utility in the Tiger installer?
I currently have my Macbook Pro (newest version as of Aug 09) set up with Windows XP and Leopard via Bootcamp. I don't use Windows almost ever anymore so I wanted to install Ubuntu on it. IE, just load Ubuntu over Windows. The windows partition is NTFS formatted.

I've been getting the message you need to reboot your computer by pressing the power button message. View 3 Replies View RelatedI have an Intel iMac with with Snow Leopard and Windows 7 on separate partitions. Recently I have acquired an external USB hard drive. I formatted it with Ext4, and installed Linux Mint to it.
The installation went smoothly, but I can't seem to boot from the USB drive anymore. Holding down Option on start-up only gives me two choices: Mac OS X and Windows. The drive isn't recognized in either operating systems anymore: on Snow Leopard I get "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer" and on Windows, it doesn't even show up in My Computer.
I've got a Powerbook G4 that has a booting issue. I will hear the startup "dong" a whirl of the drive, then it doesn't go to the grey screen with the Apple. It just sits there with a black screen.If I wait a few hours and try it, sometimes it starts up fine, or sometimes it will sit on the grey screen with the Apple symbol and do nothing.If it does boot correctly, none of the USB ports work. Any ideas on if its worth trying to repair since its 2 and a half years old and I didn't get the Apple Extended Service plan?

However, it's a little different than holding down the option key at startup. I think it shows both at startup by default and if none is chosen, Mac will boot automatically within a couple of seconds.

I have created a partition in bootcamp but every time it tries to boot from the dvd a black screen comes up with a flashing white cursor and thats it. View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a Dual 2.0G G5 Power Mac here. When you plug the power into the machine, it automatically powers up. The fans come on low and the power light is on. There is no hard disk sound or video. There is no chime or sign of any intelligence. The LED #7 (Checkstop) is on and solid red. I have reseated the video card, and taken out both pairs of memory dimms, rotating the pairs in various slots to eliminate a single dimm or slot. I pressed the SMU reset. I suspect the system board or the power supply. Anyone have a guess on what could cause this and how to test it? Also, anyone know how to get the heatsinks out so I can reseat the processors?

At home I use both...However when I fix the time on Windows Vista that makes the time on Mac OS X wrong...I know this is a dual boot issue...is there any fix for this? Problem I want to Install Boot Camp On my old Macbook Pro, But the "Superdrive" is not super anymore... So I only have the USB option.So I for instance partitioned my Extern HD and installed Lion in hope that it gave me the option to use the USB drive, since Boot Camp 4.0.1 have more options than 3.0.1 But all for nothing the macbook pros s EFI is set to only use the Superdriveport, and not like the Macbook air. I have seen I can use some rEFIt program to go in and change the preferred drive for starup. But I would rather like not to have a to change anything in the EFI with any program.
- So it must be possible to sort of make the Macbook Pro into an Air regarding the drives, if you know any kind of programming, which I dont.
