This very fast and very expensive new video card for my Dual Core Powermac G5 doesn't seem to be speeding anything up for me. Is this because the graphics cards on PM G5's still rely on the CPU or something? It still stutters when I'm playing back certain video online.

Okay so i own an imac. the specs of it are a 3.06 ghz intel core 2 duo processor, 500gb, 2gb of ram and an nvidia geforce 8800 gs graphics card with 512mb of video ram. Okay so like most people have asked this before, what is it? The GS only has 384mb of video ram, and this has 512mb of video ram. What is this graphics cards real name and what are the specs of it?

Never had any major problems with the computer itself I am currently living in Korea, and thus have very highspeed internet. However, on my Mac, it is running quite slow. There is no modem that I can reset, because the apartment building is already wired so my ethernet cable connects directly into the wall. A friend came over to test the connection (speedtest.net) with his PC and he was downloading 60,000 KBPS, when I plugged in my MAC I was downloading at 15,000 KBPS. He downloads various things at around 2mb/s and I sometimes only get 50 kb/s.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI have a two year old Mac Pro ( 2GB memory and 2GB RAM) which up until now has worked very well, extremely well really. Alas for some inexplicable reason it has decided to takes it's time coming out of the starting gate. It has gone from around 15 seconds to around 5 minutes. So far I have eliminated apps which I have not been using as well as a few startup items that I didn't really need.I have cleaned up my desktop so that there is only one Icon on it.
I have also de-fragged my startup drive.I have used Disk Utility which tells me that the disc is fine, and it seems to be working just fine when it is up and running. I have also unplugged my firewire and USB connections. I have run my cron scripts deleted all rotated log files and repaired disc permissions. Maybe I didn't need to, but heck, who knows, I am no expert. Maybe a reinstall may solve the problem or resetting the Pram may work. I don't really know for sure but I'll try anything just in case.
I have run Disk Utility and deleted many image files with no improvement in speed. The slow speed came on suddenly. No new programs or devices.
View 5 Replies View RelatedThe iMac G3 is a 2002 model, has a 600 mghz processor and 1 GB RAM. It does not have an AirPort wireless card and Apple no longer manufacturers an AirPort card for this machine (which I bought used), so I bought a USB wireless adapter that appears to pick up a pretty strong signal from my Verizon FiOS router, strongest of course when parked next to the router. Unfortunately, I am only able to generate 3.5-4.2 mbps download speed no matter how close I am to the router, whereas the machine can consistently download at 12-15 mbps with a direct ethernet connection. The FiOS router can download at speeds in excess of 20 mbps. Is there some setting I'm overlooking that can improve the wireless connection speed or am I going to have to settle for wired use only?
View 8 Replies View RelatedI got myself a PowerBook G4, trying to weigh my options as far as upgrades go. The airport inside this laptop gives me horrible reception, always has, always will. Would a wireless card give me a significant boost of speed/reception? If you have experience with it, please add your input as I'm trying to justify this purchase if it will have benefits. Example, I'm in my bedroom, 2 floors down is the wireless router (not that far away), and sometimes reception drops to 0...I'd like to have a solid connection.

My wife complains that the internet is slow & can't stream video.Th is computer is wired to a gigbit switch, then to 100 Mbit switch then to the router. I have a 24" iMac connected to same gigibit switch and have no problem with the internet speed.When I try to send a large file between my iMac & the G5, the transfer is slow. I checked in System Profiler and both computers detect the ethernet speed as 1000 Mbit (1gigabit or something like that).
Ideas on how to resolve? Gigbit ethernet cards that will work in the G5?I don't have Airport on the G5.
I need to find a better download management application than Speed Download. Whenever I run speed, and download more than one file at a time, my memory usage skyrockets and maxes out. System runs VERY sluggish, and i basically can't use my MBP until downloads are done.
I only have a rudimentary understanding of OpenCL, so hopefully the premise of this question makes sense: Comparing the 2 possible graphics cards configurations for the new 15" MBP, would having the 512MB Nvidia 330M instead of the 256MB one mean that OpenCL in OSX will be able to extract more power to facilitate the overall speed of the system?

View 8 Replies View Relatedi've got a 6 year old 12 inch powerbook G4 1.33 ghz that has internet speeds around 5177kbps, but overall its a bit dated sooo I wanted something a bit more new. I recently picked up a white 2.4 ghz Intel Core 2 Duo Macbook, HOWEVER the internet wireless speeds on it is dismal in comparison. I'm getting download speeds on average around 405kbps and upload speeds are pretty much non-existant! I've matched both of them to the same internet settings and they are both running 10.5.8. So again I'm stumped and if anybody can give me some idea as to what to do, Id greatly appreciate it!
View 4 Replies View RelatedMy g4 has two slots for RAM. One is empty, the other has 512MB. I need to increase the amount of RAM prior to upgrading my OS from 10.3.9 to 10.5 (Leopard). One website states I can upgrade to a max of 2MB, while another states I can only upgrade to a max of 1MB. Which is correct? And, does each slot need the same amount (i.e. 512MB in each for a total of 1MB), or can I keep the current 512MB and install 1MB in the second slot.

View 4 Replies View RelatedHer laptop is running terribly slow. She uses this computer for iTunes/iPod and running Safari and Word...not much else. Not sure why she would be having any problems. Hardrive space isn't a problem, as there is about 10G availableThe computer boots VERY slow...it takes at least 5 minutes. Once running, launching any application takes much longer than it should. Surfing the net also is very spotty. A page will load, then for no reason, the spinning beach ball (SBB) pops up and freezes the computer for 30 seconds to a minute. This happens the entire time online for any page...even after the page is fully loaded the computer continues to have the SBB appear every few minutes. This issue is not isolated to Safari...it seems the entire OS is lagging horribly. I tried running Disk Utility, which couldn't even finish. After spending 10+ minutes with the progress bar not moving, I gave up.

Today my 12" G4 powerbook started to become slow, lots of spinning wheel, delayed menus etc. I checked file permissions, rebooted and it just kept on getting slower. Eventually it wouldn't get past the white apple screen. I booted off the Tiger DVD and ran disk utility to fix and repair permissions again. It wouldn't let me repair the disk as I kept getting this error: 'Repair volume failed with error could not unmount disk'.
I had to reboot again, and eventually my hard disk no longer appears in Disk Utility. I tried to boot into safe mode and get this:

I have a mid 2010 27" iMac and just added 16 gig of new ram (first two slots came with 2 gig each and I bought and had installed two more 8 gig - so I can run Final Cut Pro X) Well, after the new RAM was installed by an apple certified dealer - it kernel crashed about 5 times randomly, which it had never done before - It was obvious it was caused by the new RAM - I took it back and they replaced it - and it has now kernal crashed 6 times - Are 8 Gig Ram cards not compatible with 2010 imacs? These guys seem like they know what they are doing - but enough is enough - I know in Apple's literature they mention that only 2 and 4 gig upgrades are possible - but they said the 8 gigs just came out

Everything works fine and will connect to the internet over the ethernet cable.As soon as I plug an Airport card in it refuses to boot, it won't even try so it seems to be a hardware issue.Is it possibly a dodgy Airport card or something else?It's a 2001, 600Mhz, Dual USB, white 12" iBook.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm finding my MBA rev b to be quite slow opening apps, I bought the 1.6 ghz 120gb model.
It seems like everything's rather slow to open. I have 30gb free on the hard drive, iTunes, Safari (5 tabs) TextWrangler and mail open all day.
If I ever need to go into Firefox it takes a fair while to get up and running. I ran some xbench scores and it seems very slow on the random reads, oddly it was much quicker writing to the disk than reading.
Is their anyone in the know who can confirm that this is normal? Or if not, is there anything I can do to give it a boost?
