PowerPC :: EMac Slow Speed Came On Suddenly?
Apr 11, 2008I have run Disk Utility and deleted many image files with no improvement in speed. The slow speed came on suddenly. No new programs or devices.

View 5 RepliesI was wondering. A friend of mine has a Emac 700mhz equipped with a 56k modem. She has an "intermediary" speed internet connection. With that, she can't really view a video - let's say from Youtube. It just keeps hanging. She only has 256mg of RAM which can be boosted to 1G, and I was wondering if by doing so, it would have a significant impact on her Emac capacity to view such content.
View 6 Replies View RelatedThe iMac G3 is a 2002 model, has a 600 mghz processor and 1 GB RAM. It does not have an AirPort wireless card and Apple no longer manufacturers an AirPort card for this machine (which I bought used), so I bought a USB wireless adapter that appears to pick up a pretty strong signal from my Verizon FiOS router, strongest of course when parked next to the router. Unfortunately, I am only able to generate 3.5-4.2 mbps download speed no matter how close I am to the router, whereas the machine can consistently download at 12-15 mbps with a direct ethernet connection. The FiOS router can download at speeds in excess of 20 mbps. Is there some setting I'm overlooking that can improve the wireless connection speed or am I going to have to settle for wired use only?

My wife complains that the internet is slow & can't stream video.Th is computer is wired to a gigbit switch, then to 100 Mbit switch then to the router. I have a 24" iMac connected to same gigibit switch and have no problem with the internet speed. When I try to send a large file between my iMac & the G5, the transfer is slow. I checked in System Profiler and both computers detect the ethernet speed as 1000 Mbit (1gigabit or something like that).
Ideas on how to resolve? Gigbit ethernet cards that will work in the G5?I don't have Airport on the G5.
This very fast and very expensive new video card for my Dual Core Powermac G5 doesn't seem to be speeding anything up for me. Is this because the graphics cards on PM G5's still rely on the CPU or something? It still stutters when I'm playing back certain video online.

i've got a 6 year old 12 inch powerbook G4 1.33 ghz that has internet speeds around 5177kbps, but overall its a bit dated sooo I wanted something a bit more new. I recently picked up a white 2.4 ghz Intel Core 2 Duo Macbook, HOWEVER the internet wireless speeds on it is dismal in comparison. I'm getting download speeds on average around 405kbps and upload speeds are pretty much non-existant! I've matched both of them to the same internet settings and they are both running 10.5.8. So again I'm stumped and if anybody can give me some idea as to what to do, Id greatly appreciate it!
View 4 Replies View RelatedSorry for the title but I couldn't think of anything better. Hopefully I'll be able to explain my problem. I have a MPR 2.53 ghz, 4 gig ram, I'm using Safari 4.04. I am using the WIFI at a guesthouse in Thailand (but I had the same issue in China, Vietnam ...). I ran a speed test and it said download 7mb/sec and upload about 1mb/sec. I have an "app" that says bandwidth in 1.3kb/sec out 1.0kbs. I thought maybe it was Safari so I downloaded and installed Firefox. firefox gives me similar speeds. When I downloaded Firefox though I had a download speed of over 1mb/sec. But as soon as it finished downloading the speed went back to around 1kb/sec. I have rebooted my MBP many times. I did some Google searches but didn't find anything helpful.

I'm finding my MBA rev b to be quite slow opening apps, I bought the 1.6 ghz 120gb model.
It seems like everything's rather slow to open. I have 30gb free on the hard drive, iTunes, Safari (5 tabs) TextWrangler and mail open all day.
If I ever need to go into Firefox it takes a fair while to get up and running. I ran some xbench scores and it seems very slow on the random reads, oddly it was much quicker writing to the disk than reading.
Is their anyone in the know who can confirm that this is normal? Or if not, is there anything I can do to give it a boost?
Is there a way to tell which one is slow, if anything is going slow? I have an extremely old PC which is normally ok for most things, but gets bogged down if I am doing too many things.I was so annoyed with our national real estate site after they changed the format that I wrote a letter once a long time ago.. and I was ready to let them have it again, listing all the reasons why it is so bad and so much worse than the original.
Today for the first time, I accessed the site (mls.ca) using my new iMac. It was like lightening speed, comparatively speaking.Wow, suddenly I knew why the mls people hadn't changed their new format. But then I started going to other sites.. like airmiles.ca for example, and it was slow as heck... and stalling.. etc.
How would I be able to tell whether it is an internet slowness or the computer being slow?
In the 6 years I've had this Mac Pro 1,1 I've never heard the fans this loud. I'm running 10.7.4 and have a FCP Compressor job running, which I've done quite often, but it's never caused the fans to be audible. It's to the point where It's really distracting. Â I regularly run high CPU activities on this machine (graphic renders, video transcoding, etc..) and have never heard the fans or gotten the speed to go beyond 650rpm (checking on the iStat Pro widget). The temps on the machine are 83 and 85 f on both CPUs (i've also noticed the temps are displayed differently after 10.7.4 update was done). But for some reason, the exhaust and CPU fans are running at full output (2800 rpm each). Â

got an Emac G4 bubble slow to load and sometimes you just get a blank screen and nothing happens ?
Then you turn of the power and mostly it loads with the apple chime.
Sometimes you got to do it three times .
Other times you notice in the little box as it loads a "?" .
What can i do to get it to load properly ?
When it wont load you get a beep instead of the chime.
so for about 6 months I've been using my iMac's ethernet connection as an Air Port for both my iphone and roommates pc around the house. recently I was using my phone and the wifi all of a sudden was horrible, playing a quicktime video that took 2 seconds to begin before was literally impossible to play, and when switched to edge it was much faster.
I thought that something was acting up with my iphone and shrugged it off but my roommate soon complained the internet was being really slow on her pc. So I checked my Mac and it's internet connection was fine. The Air Port was on, I reset it, switched channels but same performance.
I have two memory sticks (loads of space on both of them.)
For about seven days now I noticed that they are incredibly slow (about usb1 speed) and I don't know why?
I have 10.5.4 OS , 2 x 2.8 Ghz Quad, 8 GB Ram with about 5 usb2 ports. I tired ports at both the back and front - same result.
my desktop mac is suddenly incredibly slow!

I bought my Macbook Pro late summer 2011. Suddenly just a week ago it slowed down significantly, so I thought maybe if it was an update that had gone crazy or something so I ran an update check and installed what was missing and rebooted, and it went stuck on gray the apple loading screen. Then I booted from the Recovery HD and ran the disk check, found out that the Mac partition was broken and couldn't be repaired. I copied everything from to my external disk and formatted the partition and reinstalled Lion. Still runs slow and freezes though and I can't figure what to do.
It's something with the hardware, maybe overheat or something. Can't seem to run Hardware Test either, goes straight to the loading screen when I hold the 'D' button.

We had a power outage and I had to reset my home network (two wirelessly extended Airport Extremes). We have four computers on the network.
Speeds are back to normal: 36Mbps down, 6Mbps up near the first AE and about 25/5 near the second wirelessly bridged AE.
Problem is with my iMac and another laptop. The network change must have corrupted both and each are only getting about 1/1 speeds. I tried restarting and renewing DHCP lease and trashing Airport Network passwords in the keychain as recommended by Apple and it solved the problem for a minute or two and then it returned. The iMac is only a year old and the laptop an older white MacBook.

My PowerBook has been working extremely slow for the past couple of days. Restarting hasn't helped. Even though it's about 5 years old, it's never given me any trouble. Now I wanted to start FinalCutPro, and there's a popup saying: Configuration Error This software requires certain hardware or software which is missing. 512MB of RAM.So I can't even start this program. It's really an emergency since I have to work with FCP
View 1 Replies View RelatedIs there something I can do such as a clean up?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have had my Macbook Air for a little more than 2 years. It has always worked pretty well. However, recently I went on vacation for 1 week without my laptop. When I returned home and went to turn on my computer, I noticed that it had become extremely slow. Firstly, turning on my computer has become an abnormally long process. It used to take about 2-3 minutes to turn on. Now, it takes a solid 10 minutes. Not only this, but once my computer has finally turned in, it usually takes another 10 minutes before I can open an internet browser. When I click on the browser (I used Google Chrome) no window will pop up, and after a few more clicks, my screen will freeze completely. Sometimes I will get the rainbow wheel and sometimes the screen just completely freezes without it. Sometimes I will try closing the lid of my computer and then reopening it, but when I do this, the screen stays black for a long period of time even after I have reopened it, almost as if the computer is off. After an excessive amount of key smashing and an abnormally large amount of time, the screen will finally stop being in sleep mode and show my desktop. Even then, my computer will still barely work. Once I finally get a window open and start using the internet, google chrome will end up crashing within at least 20 minutes. The entire screen will freeze, I won't be able to scroll down or exit out of the window, and I then usually have to repeat the painful process that I described above when I attempt to open my browser.
It has been over a week since I returned from vacation, and I deal with these issues every time. My computer has always been fine in the past, why is this suddenly happening? I have tried to remove some of my applications my going into Finder and highlighting the application and clicking Move to Trash, and then emptying the trash. This hasn't helped at all. Do you think that it would help to delete some of my files and data (pictures, documents, screenshots, downloads, ect) or is this irrelevant? Â

I don't know whats going on. My SU was working fine until i noticed last night when I went to download iTunes 9.2, the downloading speed was real slow....like an hour or more on the timer. I tried multiple times then went to bed. internet connection is fine because today I've been downloading stuff on my other computer and just used software update to download iTunes on this machine that has both my Tiger partition and an SL partition, and it downloaded fine on that. However, I tried downloading some software app from apple directly form their website and the speed is fine. And now also, trying to download iTunes from the updater aborts about halfway saying it can't be verified or corrupted. I don't get it. what the heck could be wrong?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI've tried every trick I can think of within my current technical competency and I'm stumped for what to try next.Lately I've had some odd behaivour with it that may or may not be related or even significant...Finder hanging semi-regularly.Different programs preventing shut down.My volume randomly going up and down like the keys are being pushed (possibly a remote issue related to my recently purchased Apple TV, though not actually being used at the time of incendents?)
Current Issues Suddenly this week it feels like everything's causing trouble. Issues inclue...Various programs crashing or hanging (Firefox, Finder, Photoshop, Illustrator etc. - seems non-specific). Finder in particular I can't even get to reboot sometimes.Finder sometimes not loading view of files in folders, no spinning loading wheel either.Power cable light went amber for a period yesterday even though the MBP was at full power and plugged in all day.Photoshop file I created and know was working fine yesterday suddenly had an 'unexpected end-of-file error' today suggesting it wasn't saved properly and is since corrupted.Everything is running painfully slow, even when it works. Things I've changed latelyThe only things I can think of that I've done differently lately are these...
Upgraded my Dropbox to 100gb and started working with large artwork files directly from there.Changed the settings on my Airport Express Base Station at my office, which my MBP is set to try and connect to when possible. Remedies I've triedRebooting numerous times.Zapping the P-ram, which wont even work at the moment. Even with holding in the power button the MBP just loads to the login screen as per usual.Rebooting in safe mode.Emptying the trash can.Running iAntivirus to scan for viruses which came up clear.Repaired Disk and Repaired Disk Permissions.Run Spring Cleaning to clean System Caches.Cleared more space on my hard drive.Updated all software I'm completely out of ideas and I'm still none the wiser as to what the actual issue is.

I have a MacBook Pro with Mac OS X, Version 10.6.8 and Safari has started running really slowly, all of a sudden. I've tried Firefox and Google Chrome, which run faster, but not much. Wi-Fi has been checked and is not the problem. I've emptied my cache and reset Safari. My disc usage is 15%, my system memory says that I have 2.35 GB of free space, and there are no "page outs". All of the programs, on my computer, that do not require internet access run fine. My firewall is off.

I need more ram for my eMac 1ghz. It has 512mb and its a little slow during some things. Like IMovie. What type of ram do I need?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a 1.25 ghz eMac with 1 512 stick currently in. What's the max amount of ram that I can put in? And, do I have to look for anything else except for "DDR SDRAM?" Do I need a certain PC number?
View 2 Replies View RelatedIm purchasing an eMac in a couple days, but am a little confused about performance. Its a 1 GHZ PowerPC G4 with 256MB of Ram but my last pc blew up (literaly) However the 1GB of RAM that was in still works and will fit in it.
Besides that my Questions pertain to Leopard and Time Machine. I Know that Leopard will run on this Mac, But what about performance? and I heard that the eMacs cant experience the i candy Time Machine offers.
How So? is it true? I really want the Ability to use Time Machine. (Right now i'm just using Genie Timeline for my Windows 7 PC)
I am having a number of problems with my 14th month old Macbook.
My wifi is slow whilst my room mate who uses a PC gets a much faster speed.
My general processing speed is slowing down even though i have done a system clean using "Clean My Mac"
Safari is like a snail so I have given up completely and have been using Chrome which initially was great but the past few weeks it also is slowing down, behaves strangely and wont let me sign into either my Twitter or YouTube but again my flat mate who also uses Chrome but on a |PC has no problem with these.
I am wondering if I have a virus or well honestly dont know what is going on but things are not working as smoothly as 6 months ago and this is not what I expected from a MAC having had years and years of using sluggish PCs.
