Power PC :: Mac PowerBook Won't Charge / Get It To Work?
Oct 18, 2009
Having an issue charging my mac. When I plug the charger into my mac, it turns orange, so I know its charging, but no matter how long I leave it in for it never has enough power to turn on.
If I move the charger around slightly at an angel in the hole it turns green and only then will it turn on, but the moment the green light goes back to orange the laptop turns off.
When I do manage to get it turned on, it says there is 0% battery.
I've tried using different chargers so could the problem be with the connector in the laptop?

I have a 1.67 GHz Powerbook G4. This morning it was fine. When I got home from work, it decided that it suddenly no longer wants to stay on when not plugged in. The battery is showing a full charge. The light on the plug is green. But the second I unplug the cord from the laptop, the entire thing shuts down.

Some days ago i finally added a Powerbook g4 to my Mac collection and since then ive been trying to fix this computer without any results. The Powerbook had the battery dead at first and i had to replace it with a new one i had. Now the problem/weird thing is that the computer detects the battery but it doesnt charge. It has about 18% of the charge and when i try to boot up all i hear is like a fan sound and nothing more, no boot up sound and no image on the screen.
If i boot up using the power cable thats when i see the 18% of the battery icon, but as soon as i take out the power cord, the image goes black although the computer still makes sounds as if it was on. Does it have any solution? PS: ive tried to reset the PMU,changed the pRam for a new one, reset the Nvram.

My 1.67ghz, 15" high resolution, Powerbook seems to be broken. I use my laptop all day every day on battery power, and charge it through the night. Today, when I got home, it drew no charge from the adaptor. I have a backup iBook G3 which still charges perfectly off the same adapter, yet the Powerbook doesn't. I have left plugged in for about 45 minutes now, but still no charge, so the computer won't start up. I have a lot of important work on this computer, so I at least need some way of getting my data off it without ripping it apart to remove the HD. What should I do? I suspect that the power port in the laptop is somehow deformed, and thus is not making a connection. If this is the poblem, will it mean a new logic board?

My girlfriend has a 12 inch Powerbook G4. She noticed that the battery life was starting to dwindle. Tonight, she tried using it. It wouldn't power up. The battery indicator showed one flickering power circle. The adaptor has the green circle on it, indicating the battery has a full charge. However, the computer won't charge up.I've read the 12 inchers don't have separate PMUs. Could that prevent the machine from starting? She was using it earlier this evening, as she e-mailed me pictures from our vacation.

im looking for an application that will allow to charge the macbook automatically when the battery is down. so although the charger will be in the power input the laptop will not charge but only if its batter runs down.
this way there will be less power used since the laptop will charge only when it needs to

I am thinking of using a solar panel setup to charge all of me and my family's MacBook's, iPhones, iPod, and iPads, and if anyone know the approximate number of watt-hours it takes to fully charge each of those you would make me very happy

well it does charge just not how it should. when i plug the ibook into the power adapter usually nothing happens. i have to jiggle the plug in just the right way to get it to charge and this involves putting pressure on it in some direction. it has gotten worse so now i have to have constant pressure on it for it to charge. i have tried 2 different chargers so i know its not that. i was thinking maybe the DC board but i was not sure.

I have a 2008 Macbook and when the power is plugged in, the light is green, however my battery will not charge, and it even says at the top "battery is not charging" If I remove the power cord from the computer it will still run off the remaining % of the battery, but If I reconnect the cord it lights up green and I never see the amber charging color. I traded out my battery as well as a different cord and still the same results. My battery will charge up on a friends macbook, but not on my own. I want to take it to the apple store but I'm at school and there is no store near me.

Basically I'm having issues with my newly acquired Powerbook G4. When i bought it the battery was not working at all so have now installed a new replacememnnt battery which works fine but having some slight issues. So...
First time I charged it, it reached 100% but green light never came on to indicate full charge. When I run the PB off the battery it gets to 20% and it shuts down without any warning it's low on battery (trying to switch it on after this is impossible, it clearly has no life) After the above I connect the power lead and start up the computer, the battery indicator starts charging from 20% onwards. Something fishy definitely going on and I have no idea what it could be, I calibrated the battery but it has always cut off at 20% since first charge/discharge.

MY powerbook g3 pismo, 500 mhz won't power up. It went bad nearly a year ago, and was put into storage, i don't remember the exact problem.
Anyway, just today i read that if i disconnect the PRAM battery and try and start it, and i did. It worked amazingly! then it it seemed to freeze, i did a hard reset holding the power button.
But it never started up again. What could be the problem?

My G4 Powerbook 17" 1.5mhz stays on most of the time. Only thing that really gets any rest is the screen once in a while. For this reason, is it better to just power it off the powersupply and take out the battery? Any harm done in having the battery there and charging for extended periods?

It got REALLY hot. I had to snap my hand back after touching it, and my hand was red. I noticed it had turned off, so I went to see what was the matter. It felt hot enough to possibly catch fire.

I've recently acquired a (rather old) PowerBook g3 (Lombard if you are wondering). However, I have by yet acquired a power cord for said notebook.
The laptop was free, but the power cord will apparently not be so I expensive. Basically PowerBook will be used for writing papers, other non-Internet stuff I need to do this year (senior in high school). Right now I am using my iPod touch as my primary computer. My question is, should I go ahead and just pay the money for a power cord or should I just suck it up and wait until may-isu when I get a new notebook? Obviously I'd like to avoid paying a lot but would the money for a new cord be worth it? If not I could always use google docs for papers when I'm not at the house, how advantageous would having an actual notebook be

I recently tried to upgrade my powerbook with a new HD (see but forgot to format the drive before trying to install the operating system. I gave it another go last night but with the new disk installed and everything back in place, it would not power back up. I took it to bits again and checked everthing was connected including the little ribbon cable from the keyboard but still nothing. I put the old disk back in with the same results. there is no response from the power key at all. Everything is pushed home where it should be so I'm a lttle worried about what could have happened.

I have a PowerBook G4 with a broken power connector, and a brand new hard drive for my Mac Pro which I bought to transfer the files to. What is the best way to do it?- I could attempt to open the case and remove the harddrive myself, get a 2.5-to-3.5-inch harddrive adapter for about $10, and put it in my Mac Pro. From what I've read this would work, although I've never tried anything like it and I'm not sure how hard it would be.

I have a PowerBook G4 1.67 that shut itself down sometime during the day yesterday, and will not power back up. It's completely unresponsive to the power button, with no signs of life whatsoever.
I've tried resetting the PMU. There has been no new hardware or software installed. This has been tried with 2 batteries, and 2 AC power supplies.
There is inconsistency with the color of the AC power supply tip, as it doesn't seem to indicate the strength of the battery. Regardless of which battery or how much charge is left, the tip is Green, and will flicker Yellow very quickly once, when plugged in. It was Green following the initial shutdown, Yellow when I placed a dead battery in it, and then eventually turned Green. Now, it seems permanently in the Green / flicker Yellow state.
It did fully charge one battery while like this.

We have about 10 PowerBook G3/400 computers in our school running OS 9.2.2. They haven't been used in a couple of years and now none of them will boot up. No power. I checked Apple's website and found an article called Power Management Unit. It says to hit the reset button, wait 5 seconds and then hit the power button, but it didn't work for any of them. Does anyone have any ideas?

Is it possible to mod a PowerBook to use the MagSafe adapter instead of the regular adapter? I'd be willing to do it myself, but I haven't found any real consensus on whether or not it's even possible.

Was on my PB last night, went to pick the power cable up by the transformer and it emitted a spark, a little bang and then some smoke.
It was very very hot. It was late, and I was slow to react and it remained plugged into the computer after this had happened still charging it as if nothing had happened.
The computer is fine too.
Basically, I'd like to know if anyone has had a similar issue happen to them, and if I should get a new power cord? Or if you think it is okay to carry on using this one.
I haven't plugged it in since last night to see if it works or not, I am worried it will break the lap top.
