Power Mac G5 :: Why Starts Up On Its Own
Dec 20, 2007
My G5 has a feature some people might like, but I don't. Every once in awhile, at least once a week, my G5 starts up on its own. I have to be sure I turn down my audio whenever I shut down or the start up chimes will shock the whole house. Can anyone lead me to a solution? This has been going on for a few months.
Information:
G5 single; FCP 5.1.4
Mac OS X (10.4.10)

It started a few days ago.... suddenly, the Computer switches off and the Power LED blinks continues very fast. But at irregular times. It seem to me, when I am not working on it. (I have also connected a PC to the same monitor and keep switching the monitor).
Yesterday i was working all evening, and it did not switch off. This morning while start up it turned off.I checked the memory in My Mac and all 16 GB show up. after I push the power switch for a while and turn it off, I can boot up again (except this morning, where I had to restart after the crash)  Â

Starts to power up from either mains supply or battery, but always switches off after anywhere from 10 seconds to a few minutes. Chimes, usually gets as far as screen coming on etc but then you hear the power cut and it just switches off (sometimes gets as far as login screen). Have tried NVRAM reset SMC etc.

I have a Mac Pro and when I put it to sleep, it randomly starts itself back up-sometimes after 2 minutes and sometimes after 3 hours. I've tried repairing permissions, maintenance, etc. and have no clue as to what might be causing this.

Every few months, my iMac will start up from sleep mode on its own. Why does it do this, and is it something to be worried about? i am not touching the mouse or keyboard or using any remotely connected devices when this occurs.

My imac starts typing by itself it usually starts in safari and if I open any other program it will continue in that. It also continuously toggles rapidly between items in the lists of drop down menus. Other weird stuff happening too like if I put it to sleep and re-login it will delete any text I try to put in the password box.

Here is my setup..
The BSNL modem's LAN 1 is connected to the iMac.
It all works fine.
But as soon as I switch on any of the windows PC on the both sides, the modem gets crazy and the whole line gets unstable.
Like the internet starts going on and off continuously.
I dont understand, what is the reason.

Mail started quitting a few days ago, just after it starts. I tried everything that has been suggested for these cases: removed beta version of Safari, remove Growl and any other third parties, remove the preferences file (.plist) and the user/Library/Mail folder. Nothing works! I set up another account on my Mac and Mail works there! I tried to use the new files that Mail generated for this new account for the old account but I couldn't make Mail to run.

I've been reading the documentation and googling but I haven't found a way of getting Parallels to start XP and log in with anything other than Administrator. I created a proper account in XP with admin rights which I was intending to use for the three or four applications I still need Windows for. However, when starting the VM I have to immediately log out and log back in with this username, which is getting annoying. I suppose I could just use Administrator for the apps, but I'd rather have a proper named user account. Anyone know if it's possible to configure the VM in some way so it uses a different username in XP?

I must have clicked on something somewhere to change things and can't figure out what I did.
System Info:
OS X 10.5.7
MacBook Pro 4.1
Firefox 3.0.10
App: Download Status Bar
Before screwing things up, when I clicked on a file to download, a pop-up box would appear asking me if I wanted to open the file and unzip it or save it.Now, when I click on a file to download, it automatically starts downloading and does not unzip it.Does anyone know what I screwed up?

A few days ago I began having trouble with my Mac Pro (Dual Proc. 2.8 Ghtz, 2 GB RAM, DVI display, OS 10.5) It would not wake up after going to sleep. I did the PRAM and SMC resetting thing, and I thought it had worked, but now just two days later, the computer does turn (the bell rings a la Wall-E and everything) but the display remains blank. I plugged the display into a MacBook pro and it worked fine, so I'm guessing the problem is the DVI port. 3 questions arise:
Does anyone know of a sure-fire way to find out if the DVI ports ARE the problem? I did hook up the computer to a Power Mac (G4 running OS 10.4.11) in transfer mode, and the HD did load, I also performed the first aid thing on it and everything came back positive.
Does anyone know if changing the DVI ports is simple enough to do, or should I definitely leave to a professional? (I am fairly familiar with putting stuff in and out of it)
Should I buy the DVI card directly from Mac or can I get by with a less expensive brand?

I have gone to system preferences and removed the checkbox near the mail app for login items. This is fine. But the mail app still starts on boot.If I look at the item in the dock, there is a tick next to the option "open at login". I can not remove this tick!If I select the item and re open the context menu, it's still there. If I do this with any other app, the tick toggles. Mail however, refuses to be unticked and wants to be started with the system.

I have a G4 533 and up till 3 weeks ago it worked wonderful for a mail server. I have 1.5gb and a 300gb hard drive which has been working wonderful with no conflicts. When restarting after a software update, I noticed on the start up screen that it restarted in "safe mode". I checked for a stuck shift key and of course they were just fine. I thought it might be a heat problem because the next day I started it back up and it started normally so I ran disk utility to make sure. The next time I started, no matter if it was cool or warm, it went straight to "safe mode" just for grins, I backed up all my information onto an external drive and attempted to re-install the 10.4 disk and it went straight to the black "kernel panic" screen. "OK" I said, so I took out the 300gb hard drive all together, installed a freshly "zeroed out" 120gb hard drive that I had and then tried to start it up and it went straight back to the "kernel panic" screen. Next, I not only unplugged the cord but also took out the battery which only then would it start up alright. So now that is the only way that I can get the machine to start up in anything other than "safe mode". At this point, it is a pain in the ass but so far it is working. Does anyone have any idea what I have overlooked or what is wrong? I would really like to use the box but it is just a pain in the a$$ to do this.

I recently restarted my imac from shut down and it went straight to the guest account. I've also noticed that the dock is empty except for Finder and two other folders. Did something happen during the shutdown process?

My MacBook Pro which is only a year old was working fine, the only small problem was that it wouldn't play a video, so I restarted it but it never came back on. So I restarted it manually, the small light on the edge lit up, the screen with the apple came up along with the load bar, the empty load bar flashes a couple of times then the computer totally shuts off. Have turned starting in safe mode, same thing. Have tried starting holding down apple + option + R + P when turning on, same thing, have started starting up with the install disc in, same thing..

Yesterday, a game that I used to play often, (a board game,so not cpu intensive and at least 5 yrs old) recently started crashing on startup. I guess my HD was full and I started getting error messages, then it would not start at all. I cleaned the disk with onyx, restarted, etc. It does not have a preferences file that I can tell.

I have an old g4 , the kind shaped like half a golf ball, which starts up and then quits at different places during the process. Sometimes with the gray screen and Apple logo, sometime later when the OS has fully installed, but fails quite rapidly after that. Then tries to reboot itself with varying degrees of failure.

So here the whole story of what I think is relevant to this problem.I tried to install a small program that can read and write NFTS.After installing it needed to reboot my computer.During the reboot my computer shut down before the things were completely installed. My macbook Pro (mid 2009) rebooted and immideiatly stated that the time and date was set to jan 1st 2008.When I tried to adjest this in preferences > time and date the preferences pane did not respond after opening it.I tried to restart my computer again. But now it will only start in Safe mode.

I'm really struggling to understand why my 2010 mini has trouble playing some QT videos that my 2006 mini handles just fine! The two machines are:Â
Macmini 1.1 (1.83 GHz)
intel Dual Core
Memory 2GB
Bus Speed: 667
Graphics Card GMA 950
VRAM: 64MB
[code]....
The problem first presented itself as I am working on a generative video installation using Max6. I've used the older mini for the installations for some time with very few issues. I've been using the newer mini for video processing, compression, and editing and making DVDs and blu-ray disks. No issues there that I have noticed either. However, when I recently tried to use the newer mini to run the generative video, I noticed that several of the videos were stopping and then starting up again (skipping). I know that Max can sometimes have trouble with videos due to processing issues - but why would it work fine on the older, less powerful machine and only have issues on the newer one?Â
To begin troubleshooting, I ran one of the videos in Quicktime on the newer mini to see if similar issues arose, and they do. No problem on the older mini. The video is formatted in DVCPRO50 anamorphic format, and I am using the same monitor in both cases (1440x900,60Hz), connected by VGA to the monitor PC input. I know that Quicktime can have similar issues with very large files sometimes, but I still don't see why the newer machine stumbles with the same video that runs fine on the older one.Â
I've been hoping to start using higher resolution videos in this work, but am worried that if a newer machine can't handle these SD videos, HD will be worse. I like the minis for installations because of their small size and portability.Â
