MacBook :: A1181 Starts To Power Up But Switches Off
Aug 30, 2014
Starts to power up from either mains supply or battery, but always switches off after anywhere from 10 seconds to a few minutes. Chimes, usually gets as far as screen coming on etc but then you hear the power cut and it just switches off (sometimes gets as far as login screen). Have tried NVRAM reset SMC etc.

It started a few days ago.... suddenly, the Computer switches off and the Power LED blinks continues very fast. But at irregular times. It seem to me, when I am not working on it. (I have also connected a PC to the same monitor and keep switching the monitor).
Yesterday i was working all evening, and it did not switch off. This morning while start up it turned off.I checked the memory in My Mac and all 16 GB show up. after I push the power switch for a while and turn it off, I can boot up again (except this morning, where I had to restart after the crash)

I have a late 2007 MBP 15inch 2.33Ghz Core 2 Duo. I have had since new and no problems. Over this last week I have had the same issue a couple of times. The MBP just switches itself off. The first time it did it, it was running on battery (I was using Aperture) and had 60% power available. It would refuse to re-start until I connected it to the mains and then it ran fine.
Then it did the same thing overnight at some point. I had left it connected to the mains (as I always do at home), had shut the lid to put it into sleep mode. When I came back it was switched off. No-one had touched it whilst I was away but yet it had just turned itself off.The only thing that I noticed was that when I started it up both times the little light on the magsafe connecter kept flashing between orange and green. However when the computer booted into OS X both times it showed a reasonable amount of power in the battery.

I have an ibook G4 (2years old, a part of the battery swap program) that charges normally... for about twenty minutes. Then the light around the charger turns from it's normal "i'm charging" orange to nothing, the light goes out and the ibook switches to battery power. I've just inspected the power chord and there are no strains or tears, the plug at both ends are in good condition and the ibook power socket is fine too.
I've turned the ibook off for a period of time (two days) and reset the power manager... still no difference. The ibook looks and acts just like it should until about twenty minutes into the charge then the light turns off and it's like it's been disconnected. The chord is in correctly, i've even tried the apple extension chord = no joy. If i reconnect the power chord at the wall it's fine, starts charging again... and yes i've tried different sockets on different circuits in the house!

My G5 has a feature some people might like, but I don't. Every once in awhile, at least once a week, my G5 starts up on its own. I have to be sure I turn down my audio whenever I shut down or the start up chimes will shock the whole house. Can anyone lead me to a solution? This has been going on for a few months.

I noticed 1 of the 2 wires wasn't connected to the wi-fi card. Wireless runs perfectly, and everything else seems to work regardless.
It was the wire on the left that wasn't connected.
Also, I love how the A1181 I bought when Apple first announced the WhiteBook still runs fast and smooth and is so easily self-serviced. Can't say that about any PC laptop.

i purchased two systems, both A1181 machines. one had a functional logic board but screen and clam shell were toast. the other only had the outer case with functional screen. i tried taking the clam shell from the one machine and attaching it to the one with the functional logic board. everything went well until the end when i tried to connect the three wires on the left side of the screen to the logic board. there is a gray and black single wire that connect to the video card i am guessing, and the last connection, which is comprised of 4 small black wires doesn't seem to match the connection on the logic board.
i am wondering if there are logic boards specific to different macbooks. having the same model number is a little confusing. i also found the keyboard connection didn't fit as well as most keyboard connections i have made in the past. i was able to turn the machine on with the power button, but without connecting the last 4-wire connection i didn't get anything on the screen. just a chime.

My macboock 3,1 (A1181) is very slow on boot.
At first i get the white apple logo en the round indicator and then the screen turns blue/turcuse and it takes aprox 10min before i see the desktop. Its fast but not very fast to boot into safemode. When the computer is all booted up everything work great!
Ive tried to reinstall Snow Lion after i formated the drive but without any luck. Ive resetted SMC and PRAM. The superdrive has stopped work to, when i insert a disk i spinnsup for a min or a half then it ejects the disc.
I installed snow leopard now thru a external dvd via usb. AND! I almost forgot, the computer doesent get out of sleepmode after i closed the lid,

I have a DP 2.5GHz PowerPC G5 which is giving me problems. It is on all the time (server). If I try and restart it switches off but will not restar. Also, if it crashes (only happens once every few months) then it will not automatically restart. I have replaced the internal battery but this has not helped. I have also reset the PMU. Any ideas what may be going on here?

I have a white macbook a1181 and it stopped charging the battery, it runs fine off of the magsafe adapter and the orange light comes on the adapter when the battery is installed and when it's first turned on it shows the battery but says 0% then after a few moments it brings up the x over the battery like it's not even there. I have changed out the battery connector, got a new battery, cleaned the contacts on the magsafe adapter and the magsafe internal connector with alchohol and cotton swab.

My 4/5 month old MBP has twice now "gone dead" and then just "come back to life". I'll just be browsing, nothing flash heavy and nothing else too taxing on the processor (email, itunes open but not playing, maybe text edit) and for no reason obvious to me the screen goes dead/black along with the back light on the keyboard dying. Then 2secs later the whole thing starts up again right were it left off, not a system restart like you might get if the battery dies, but the same way it would if you had physically pulled up the screen while it's been asleep.

I noticed that my battery cycle (according to istat) switches over at 15%. So as son as it switches over to the next cycle I plug in the adapter to make the battery run a cycle from 100%-0.(I know the cycle in 100%) But it still switches over at 15%, that means that the battery ran only 85% of its capacity. How can that be? Is it possible to reset (delete) battery cycle data?

I have a dead/stuck pixel that one day can be green and one day be red. I dont really know what triggers it, if it can be some different colors I show on the screen? Anyway for hours and hours I've tried these websites that switches color several times each second claiming it will fix stuck pixels, but with no success. What can I do? I've heard that Macbooks have a "outer layer" of some sort on the screen, so you cant use the method to apply pressure on the screen, true? If is was just dead I would have no hope, but as it switches colors at least its alive.. Also, its really annoying as I've to always change background picture to hide the pixel

My 10 month old Macbook Air 13" battery behaves weird every 4 weeks. When unplugged the MBA switches off suddenly without a warning even the battery is still more than half full. Plugging it in it tells it takes 20 hours for a full charge but never gets full. After unplugging it crashes after some minutes again and goes dark.
The battery' got 178 load cycles and 5675 mAh out of originally 6700 mAh (84%). Did several SMC resets and PRAM resets. I even reinstalled Lion from scratch without changing the battery's behavior. Calibrating the battery isn't possible because it does not discharge but crashes. I tried three different power adapters.

My Imac(Intel) occasionally switches itself off. To bring it back to life I have to unplug it from the mains for a couple of hours. On plugging it back in the fan immediately starts up very noisily but nothing else happens. By holding down the on/off switch I turn the machine off. By pressing the on/off switch in the normal start up manner everything is OK.

I recently upgraded to 10.6.5 from 10.5.8. Ever since then I have had a problem with spaces. The problem is as follows:
When switching Spaces, there is the onscreen graphic along the bottom, telling you which space you just switched to. However, sometimes when switching spaces on SL 10.6.5, the graphic will stay there and wont disappear as it should. When it just stays there, the entire keyboard stops working because Mac OS X still thinks I am performing the Spaces switch. A logout is required.
I am running 10.6.5 with all updates applied.
I searched for this problem both on MR & on google, and although it seems that I am not the only one with the problem, I can find neither a cause, nor a solution.

My ibook g4 (about 15 months old) switches itself off when I move it. Then have to force turn off (holding start button down for 10 secs). I then have difficulty turning back on, in that most off the time the fan just starts, with no startup noise, and the computer just doesn't turn on except the fan. After a few tries it eventually works, but its hit and miss. Its my first mac and I'm really scared something major is wrong that will cost a fortune to fix?

I have Spaces enabled to provide 4 virtual screens. My problem is that I am in a Pages document, and I press Command-F to do a search. Spaces switches to a different virtual screen because for some reason it thinks the Find window belongs in another screen. The workaround is to move the document into the screen where the Find dialog opens. I suppose the cause is because Pages was originally opened in another screen, and moved, but the Find window thinks it belongs in the original window. Again, to me this is not a feature, but a bug.

I have a G4 800 powermac Quicksilver tower. I haven't used it regularly for a number of years, although it has been started up say every 5 months or so without any problems at all. Last weekend I started it up and it worked for about 2 minutes before suddenly shutting down, without warning. I tried starting up again and it started up, only to shut down as soon as the desktop appeared.
I started up again, and whilst the light in the power switch on the front panel illuminated, and a short 'apple boing' noise came on, it just shut down immediately after. Having left the computer untouched until the following weekend (today) the same order of events has unfolded. two minutes for the first go until unannounced shutdown, and then progressively shorter amounts of power. Whilst this isn't a critical piece of hardware for me, it does hold some useful data.

Now close to once again fighting Apple in court, Mac clone maker Psystar has brought on a new legal team and has even begun steps to publish much of its knowledge about Mac OS X clones. The small PC builder on Monday was granted permission in a Northern District of California civil court to replace its existing legal team with the law firm of Camara & Sibley, a normally Houston-based team that required a pro hac vice order to operate outside of its normal jurisdiction. Why it's choosing new lawyers at this stage isn't fully evident. When it first mounted its defense, Psystar had gone out of its way to seek a legal team that had previously defeated Apple and which was an expert in intellectual property. Since then, however, the attorneys have had their counterclaims against Apple dismissed and were left in limbo when Psystar went into bankruptcy, putting a hold on the case until Apple had a stay on the case dismissed. Whether or not Psystar's previously non-payable debt contributed to the switch in lawyers is equally uncertain.
Now that the company is re-emerging, though, it's not only prepared to rely on new legal representation but on public support. The company sent an e-mail newsletter on Tuesday which promised an upcoming community page and a wiki page. The two would not only provide Psystar's own code contributions for running Mac OS X on non-Apple computers but planned to "explain and perhaps even standardize" ways of installing the software on any modern Intel-based PC. Not surprisingly, the same messages also reiterated Psystar's case for its potential customers and argued that, if anything, its business was doing Apple a favor. "We buy hundreds of copies of OS X legally, from retailers like Amazon and Apple itself," Psystar said. "We're probably one of Apple's biggest customers."

I am thinking of making the switch to a Mac, primarily because I am sick of Windows and PC's and all their shortcomings. I really cannot afford a brand new Mac, so I am thinking of ebaying it and going for a 2.4ghz early 2008 macbook. However, there are a couple of things I need to know:If the ebay product ships with software pre-installed on the machine, how do I save it in another location while I do a format and fresh install of Snow Leopard, and then load it back on without discs? I have heard that Time Machine backs up apps, but will it restore them to working order on the new install? (I'm thinking of software such as iLife and Office here)
Secondly, are the old style polycarbonate macbooks rugged in their design? I am careful with any laptop I handle, but I do travel with them a lot. I have had 2 dell laptops in my life, and on both of them the hinges and screen border have split right open after barely a year of use, as well as other issues such as audio failure, batterys, chargers and wifi not working right.

I have a 20" iMac G5 1.8 GHz which has been pretty reliable since new. A few weeks ago I fitted a new Hard-drive (Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB), other than that the computer is bog standard. For the last few days when I start up, the computer switches itself off straight away and I have to press start again. Sometimes it gets as far as the grey screen and sometimes it gets to a complete desktop screen before this happens. This may happen 2 or 3 times and then the computer works fine all day, I can even restart with no problems once it is running fine. As it stands I can live with the problem but I worry that it may get worse. Anyone know what this might be? Could it be related to the new hard-drive? Could it even be related to the cold weather?
