Power Mac G5 :: USB Port Disappeared When Adding Apple Keyboard
Oct 9, 2007
I'm one of the $200 suckers who bought an iPhone. For my $100 "rebate" I bought the new USB AppleKeyboard. I'm typing on it now. But when I first plugged it into the USB port, I got an error message like this: "The USB port is drawing too much power and it will be disabled." This is the same port the computer's original keyboard was plugged into and it worked fine. Now it's dead. The port is one of two USB ports on the back of my (original) Cinema Display. It's still dead. The AppleKeyboard is plugged into the second USB port now, and it works fine. But I thought I'd alert someone at Apple that this happened. Further, I'd like my USB port back but cannot find anywhere in the help files how to re-enable it. Unless it's fried, of course. But then again, how could the keyboard fry the port?

Why can't I hear my music keyboard when it is connected thru the Analog Audio line-in port? Looking at the System Pref. - Sound menu - in-put - Line in Built-in Audio, I can see activity on the input levels when I press the Kawai piano keyboard but no sound is heard. All other sound systems- I-tunes etc are operating properly.

I have just bought aluminium keyboard from Apple and sadly, I have the same problem described here, in this post: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5593479
Every 5 minutes the keyboard freezes for about 15 seconds. My Mighty Mouse and tablet connected to the keyboard won't work as well. I have tried to connect it to other usb ports but there's no difference at all. Please help, as this issue is really frustrating..

Well, I just recently received a used wired apple keyboard, but whenever I try to plug it into any USB port, I get the following error: Even when I unplug every other USB device, I get this error. I'm using a Mac Mini.

I got home tonight, placed my MBP on my BookArc after plugging in the Display port adapter, USB, Firewire and Magsafe to then realise that I couldn't turn on my MBP without taking it off the cradle, opening it and pressing the on button! "This can't be right" was what went through my mind, but is it? There surely must be a way to turn on a MBP when it is attached to an Apple Cinema display and a USB Apple Keyboard while in the closed clamshell state. Surely there's a key-combination.

Whilst working on my iMac as per normal, I get this little window that pops up declaring that a USB decice is drawing too much power from my computer and as as a result, one or more of my USB devices has been disabled.
This is not an alien dialogue box to me, I have seen it many times. The problem this time is that, when I removed all my devices to see which one was causing the message to pop up, I discovered that it was my keyboard that was misbehaving.
When the message pops up it states that the offending device has been disabled. This cannot be the case however, as I am able to press enter to close it, and if the keyboard truly is the problem then I shouldn't be able to close it with enter because it would have been disabled... right?
Wondering if anyone else has had this problem. My keyboard is the standard wired + number pad one shipped free with new iMacs. It's not a custom one, it's apple stock through and through.
The baffling thing is that this has only just occured. In the year or two since I bought my iMac it's never been a problem.
Yes I have tried using a different USB slot, and no that doesn't fix it.
This box keeps popping up unless I disconnect my keyboard which of course is no way to use the computer, and I don't have a spare keyboard handy.

This is my first post on the forums, although I'm planning on looking around in here once in a while, to see what people are posting.
For starters, I just wanted to tell you about this little problem I've been having with my MacBook 1,83GHz.
Sitting at my desk at work one morning, peacefully drinking my coffee, I suddenly received a rather discomforting error-message from my shiny new (about 1 month old) MacBook;
"A USB devise is currently drawing too much power and the port will be deactivated.".

Sorry to mention the 'W' word, but wondering if anyone has had this issue.
Basically Apple wireless keyboard works perfectly in Windows, but the Bluetooth power management kills it after just a few seconds, which is extremely irritating. It works after you've 'woken it up' again though.
I can't find anywhere to change this, and no joy with a forum search / Google.

Following on from my recent post regarding the new apple wired keyboard after very helpful feedback from people who responded to my post I decided to take the leap and purchase it! Good news is that I am really happy with it and am glad that I got it! Much nicer then old apple keyboard that I was using.
I also downloaded spark v. 2.1.1 which has enabled me to change the functions of Fkeys to enable to play, pause, etc... in itunes in accordance with the keyboard layout. However, there are two functions that I am having difficulty assigning which are the F1 and F2 keys which allow the decrease and increase of screen brightness. So that I can control my screen brightness using these keys.

I was in the middle of adding new contacts and two very strange things happened.
1) After adding the second to last contact, I clicked on "All" to start dragging contacts into a new group and there were all these blank address cards in amongst my regular addresses - as if I had accidentally held down apple N and created a whole bunch of new cards inadvertently - but I had not done this - I was adding people one by one - all morning and it had been going just fine.
2) I still had a couple contacts to add so I thought, well I'll just fill in one of these blank cards - don't know where they came from, maybe I did something, so I better just use them - BIG MISTAKE - poof! Address Book is now gone - completely empty and in Mail, all my address history is also gone.
I clicked undo till I couldn't und anymore and although it said 'undoing new entry', undoing x, undoing y - nothing was really changing - everything was still gone.
Apple freak BF then fiddled and fiddled and after half and hour found the meta data files with all kinds of gobbledy gook numbers and letters in the prefix but can't get them back into Address Book to open...
Why has this happened - it felt like some sort of viral attack but I though macs don't get those - what other weird stuff is going on in there and can I prevent this weirdness from corrupting other programs - mail? calendar? Is that possible or silly? And of course most importantly can I get my addresses back?

I added 2 sticks of 512 to my power mac g5 1.6. I had ahard time getting the computer to see the new ram, but finally was able to kinda get it working after zapping the pram. However my computer only saw these 2 sticks as 256, odd. So i attempted to troubleshoot the problem. I tried just installing the new ram, but the computer wouldnt boot. I tried a few different combos with the other 4 sticks i had, but nothing. I put the old memory back in, and still nothing. The power led looks to blink once every five seconds or so. I tried pressing the pmu reset button, but still the same out come. I also tried taking out the battery, nothing.

I have a PowerMac G4 Quicksilver model M8667LL/A, Dual 1.0 Ghz, that I'd like to see about adding an additional USB port to the back of the unit. It only comes with two, one is being used for the keyboard-> mouse, the other I have an external hard drive plugged into. I recently bought a cradle for my Fuji digital camera that comes with a USB cord, I'd like to hardmount the cradle and plug it in but don't want to swap with the hard drive every time I use it or run the cable to the spare keyboard port, that looks like hell. Is this a feasible option to do, and if so, how? Mind you I'm not a computer expert so I'd either need a very basic set of instructions or an technician to do it locally, but first I'd like to know if it's even possible.

I'm looking to add a second ethernet port to my MacBook Pro using this product designed for the MacBook Air: [URL:...] Comments on the Apple site indicate that the device can be used with other computers, but I want to make completely sure it's going to do what I want it to do before I make the purchase. The reason I'm looking to do this is that I want to link my MB (via ethernet) to another laptop running Windows 7 Ultimate and use the Microsoft Remote Desktop Client to operate programs installed on the WIndows machine. The catch is that the internet at my current location (a university accommodation building) is also supplied by ethernet LAN and has some kind of detection system that prevents unauthorised routers from accessing the internet. So basically what I want to do is have the university LAN/internet running into the existing ethernet port on my Mac and then connect the ethernet port on the windows machine to the USB/Ethernet adapter plugged into one of the Mac's USB ports. The Windows machine does not have to have internet access. Is this possible? Will I be able to configure the two ethernet ports separately to operate two network connections? I understand the connections would require a different subnet mask and possibly a static IP for the computer-computer connection. That was a bit long-winded in the end.

I am using my TC as the main router on my network, this means that my DSL modem is connected to it, as are my Macs and my NAS.
I have setup port forwarding, to allow for HTTPS access to my NAS, and it is working, so I can access my shares from out-and-about.
Now I would like to add a level of security, and I remember that on my old Netgear router I could specify which computers the ports were open to, using their MAC addresses.

I just bought one of the new dual-band AirPort Extremes, to replace an older AirPort Extreme (the last generation before this one). I exported my configuration from the old AEBS to a baseconfig file, disconnected the old AEBS, and plugged in the new one. I then imported the baseconfig file, only to find that although its light will turn green, the AEBS will no longer show up in AirPort Utility. To get it back, I have to do a hard reset of the AEBS.
Through painstaking troubleshooting, I have determined that the problem occurs if the configuration includes a port mapping for SMTP (port 25). If I create all of my port mappings (and there are many) BUT that one, then all is well; but as soon as I add a port 25 port mapping and Update the AEBS, it will not restart properly (green light but no one is home).

I have a PowerMac G5 dual 2.3 ghz w/ 1gb ram and a G4 Quicksilver with 2 internal ATA drives
Internal drive specs : 2 IBM 180GB IDE/ATA-5 Deskstar 8MB 180GXP 7200 rpm
There is also an ATA card that was installed to be able to run these drives in the G4 - don't have specs available right now. Is it physically possible to transfer these drives to the G5? Will I have to transfer the card also? Is it likely to cause any problems -compatibility , speed, etc? The drives are currently full of media - how risky is it to move them from one system to another?

I'm upping the RAM in two PowerMac G5's. One is an early 2005 DUAL 2G. The other is the later 2005 DUAL 2.3. They currently have the stock RAM that came with them: 512MB for the Dual 2.0G; and 1GB for the Dual 2.3. I'd like to get them both up to between 2-4GB's each. I'm willing to go with third party RAM if it's at all compatible, ya' know the Kingston kinda stuff. That's all I can afford to bring them up to par with RAM.
Is there any standard compatibility issues when running RAM outside of OEM stuff? Also, does the RAM need to be paired? or even numbered? For example, if I had 2GB+512MB of RAM in one machine would this work? Do they have to be even in slot usage? Also, if third party compatible, would any matching spec RAM work or is there something "APPLE" specific about RAM? Example: G5-dual 2.3 requires 533MHz DDR2 SDRAM (PC2-4200).... would any matching spec RAM work?

I just got my dual 2ghz G5 that I bought off ebay. I love it. Anyway, it has a 64mb Radeon 9600 Pro with the two monitor ports. I plugged my 22" Samsung into the DVI port. I want to buy another identical monitor for the other port, but it looks different. I found a graphic that shows the card's ports: [URL]. The top one in the graphic is where I put the connection. The bottom one is different. Is there an adapter or something? Or since I'm using two non-Apple monitors, should I just get a new card? BTW, I just bought and installed Leopard.

Messing around on new MacPro Work Station and discovered the icon in system preferences is missing; now can't adjust mouse and keyboard. Using os 10.5.6. Have fixed this once before on old g4 but am having a mental block {old age? } on how to now? I think you go into usr>preferences>trash the keyboard & mouse prefs and it will return to sys. prefs. I am at work now so can't try it.

I want to add GPS data to my digital photographs. I was thinking of using the Sony GPS-CS1 with HoudahGeo. However, I've read that there seems to be a bug which means PPC machines can't recognize the Sony device, whereas Intel Macs can. Does anyone know if this bug has been fixed. Or can they recommend an alternative GPS logger which is available in the UK.

Last Thursday, i shut my MBP down and gave it to a friend to look after while I went on a driving lesson, OS X has a password so he couldn't have got in, but when i turned it back on that afternoon, some of my apps were missing, such as Address Book, iCal, iChat, iSync, Safari and a few others I still haven't noticed. I have been able to re-install the apps, but why did it happen in the first place?!?!
Early '08 Macbook Pro 2.5GHz version
EDIT: I haven't been able to re-install iSync, it isn't available on Apple's website for download, and other sites want me to pay. It isn't a re-install option when i put the Mac OS X Install Disc 1 in. Any help in re-installing iSync would be very helpful.

I won't say that it's deleted because it's still in the accounts in preferences in Apple Mail, but the gmail imap folders used to be along the left side of the program are not there.
All I see are 2 Junk (Gmail) folders on the left along with my other two email accounts I use. My Mobile Me and Comcast emails are still there.

I'm using Apple Mail 5.2 on a MacBook Pro 13" with OS 10.7.3. I have 4 email accounts (3 x exchange and 1 x POP). The sent box for one of my exchange accounts has disappeared from the 'Sent' list, where all my account's sent boxes are listed. It is visible on my iphone, which makes me think it is a Mail issue rather than a server issue. I've tried restarting the app and rebuilding the mailbox but nothing will make it reappear.
