OS X :: When Use Disc Utility And Install Cd Will Lost Hdd Information

Aug 8, 2010

I recently updated my system to Snow Leopard which worked fine. Then I tried to upgrade some software the computer will not reboot. I have tried resetting the Pram but no luck. I can boot to the cd however it doesn't see the HDD. I can boot to an external HDD but I'm not able to mount the original HDD. Disk aid will not repair the HDD. I tried super duper to copy the disc and reinstall but it doesn't see the HDD. The HDD is a SSD drive. I need to at least be able to copy the information from this drive. However I am stuck at this point.

If I use disk utility and the source is my install cd and the destination the HDD will I lose all my information?

MacBook Pro :: Can't Use OS X Install CD To Get To Disc Utility

Sep 28, 2010

So I need to start my MBP up in OS X but i currently have windows selected to start up everytime through bootcamp. Problem is I don't have a serial key and I'm stuck at the authorization prompt. At this point I don't even care to use windows anymore I just want to get back to my Mac. Which brings me to the subject of the post: I've read that you can choose which partition to use at startup from the Disc Utility and I've tried to access this by inserting my OS X install disc and holding down the "C" key during startup. All this does for me is add a few seconds to Windows boot up time. Also, I've tried holding the "Alt/Option" key at startup to get to the disk selection menu but all this does is bring up a grey screen with a Lock on it and a password field. The admin password I made when I installed OS X definitely doesn't work and no serial numbers I've typed in works either. As a last ditch effort I tried changing the firmware password through Single-User Mode, but holding down "CMD+S" during startup does nothing for me either. Could it be that no Mac startup commands work when Windows is trying to boot up?

OS X :: New Hard Drive - Lost Install Disc - Time Machine?

Sep 4, 2010

I've just bought a new 500gb HDD, and 4gb of RAM for my late '08 MacBook. However, when I started to look for my Leopard install disc, I couldn't find it. So, I was wondering... The old HDD is running Snow Leopard, and is still in the computer. My friend has a MBP, which came with the Snow Leopard DVD. Would it be possible for me to back up the old HDD with Time Machine, install the new HDD, insert his Snow Leopard DVD, format the drive with Disc Utility, and then restore from Time Machine (with all the drivers/etc) installed?

The only thing I'm worried about is, I replaced the old HDD because it had some error - ivalid node structure - or something. The drive still works, but would the problem affect anything/be carried over? I'm not so concerned with keeping the files, I just want to have all the drivers/etc installed on my mac, and I couldn't think of another way. Woul this be possible, or is there an easier way?

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Text Information Lost After Saving A Pdf With Preview?

Mar 15, 2012

I have a problem when saving a pdf using preview.

I create a document using Xelatex and the document works fine just after it is created, i.e. it looks good, it can be searched, etc. The problem comes when I save the document using preview. For example if I add a note, or highlight something and save the document, it automatically losses all text information.

It can still be opened and looks good, but it cannot be searched any more. In addition, if I try to copy a part of the text all I get are some strange characters that look like a small square with a face on it.

If I do the same procedure (i.e. open, highlight some text, and save) using pdf acrobat reader, the file is still readable both in acrobat and preview. It has to be fonts related, since it only happens when I use xelatex or latex with some specific fonts, but not with all of them.

Windows On Mac :: Full Install Leopard / SL Disc To Run Bootcamp / Update Disc?

Oct 13, 2009

Please take pity on a confused newbie. I'm running 10.4.11 (Tiger) on a 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo 13" Macbook with 1GB ram. My school requires me to run Bootcamp to take my exams. They told us that we need 10.5 minimum OS and must have our 'original system discs'. The installation dics that I have are for Tiger. If I buy an upgrade disc to Leopard/SL, will that contain the windows drivers I need to install after I install bootcamp? Or do I need to buy a full installation disc of Snow Leopard (since I think you can't buy the Leopard full installation anymore)? Another issue someone mentioned is that both Leopard & SL require 1BG ram minimum, which is what I have. I'm worried the os will run very slow, but I don't really have the money to buy new ram and get it install (and don't want to crack the fragile top case) now that I have to buy the new software too.

MacBook Air :: Ripping Leopard Install Disc Via Remote Disc

Jun 2, 2008

Well, my question is very simple: I have a MBA and this other laptop from work, a crappy HP which is old as hell. I'm planning to use Remote Disc to reinstall my Leopard, since the upgrade to 10.5.3 really screwed things here, and I can't figure out why. Point is: instead of running all Leopard installation thru Remote Disc, I would prefer to share Leopard disc 1 over Remote Disc and restore it to a partition on my external HD, making a clone of it, which would install *much* faster. Has anyone tried anything like this? There's any Windows program which allows me to rip a Mac DVD to a Mac partition?

OS X Yosemite :: Disc Utility Uses Wrong Language

Dec 5, 2014

I just bought Macbook from someone who spoke Spanish, and they had the language set to Spanish.

I changed the language to English under the "language and region," setting in system preferences, and Mac Os seems to be all in English.

However, when I restart the computer and enter disc utility, the language is still in Spanish, and I can't figure out how to change it.

In the upper right hand corner there is a US flag that says, "Estadounidense", but I don't know if it this is a country or language setting.  How I can change Disc Utility to English?

MacBook Pro :: Recover Lost Disc Space

Jun 20, 2014

I have a MacBook Pro 10.6.8. I work with a lot of large files. When I'm done, I transfer these large files to an external hard drive, erase them from my lap top, and at least once a day, restart my computer, allowing for the formerly used disc space to be recovered. I occasionally will run ONYX and restart the computer, this also recovers lost disc space. Usually after restarting my computer there is between 100-150 GB of available space. My problem now is the space is not coming back. I'm down to 45 GB. Trash is empty. I've cleaned with ONYX, but the space is not recovering.

OS X :: Disc Utility Fails On New Internal Macbook Hard Drive?

Sep 5, 2009

I just upgraded my MacBooks hard drive and put in the install cd to restore from my time machine backup. Evedything went smoothly until I chose the new hard drive as the destination for the restore. I was told that the install failed to erase the hard drive and to restart and try again. So I did but when I try to erase or partition the drive, there is an error and it fails. The hard drve seems fine since it can be seen by disc utility but after it fails to partition or erase, it disappears from the disc utility forcing me to restart. The process I've done about 5 times now is boot the comp, choose time machine restore, then while the install is calculating the space the restore would require and searching for discs to install on, nothing shows up so I go to disc utility and try to erase or partition the drive only for it to fail and disappear from disc utility. At this point I hold down the power button to turn it off and restart the process.

The first time I tried, the restore process saw the drive while calculating the restores size requirements and allowed me to go the next step where it would automatically try to erase the hard drive (without me having to go into disc utility myself) but after the first try, it just says "searching for disks" and so I go into disc utility myself where I can see the disk.

MacBook Pro :: Lost Very Large Amount Of Disc Space For No Apparent Reason?

May 11, 2012

I have 750GB MacBook Pro and up until the other day I showed 250GB used and 500GB unused. I discovered this because the past two days my computer would just freeze and I couldn't do anything. So I ran the Disc Utility and it found some errors and fixed them. So I'm wondering if the 400GB of lost disc space now has something to do with the computer locking up? I've searched all the folders and added up their size and still come back to 250GB that I can see. So I'm assuming there's something hidden somewhere that's eating up over half my hard disc space?
