I have had a problem for about a month whereby my MBP won't shut down, it just hangs after it has cleared the desktop and only the wallpaper is displayed. Now disk utility won't see the disk at all, and Software Update also does not find any updates. It checks for new software for ever. My mac starts up fine, and I can use it as normal.
View 5 RepliesI just upgraded my MacBooks hard drive and put in the install cd to restore from my time machine backup. Evedything went smoothly until I chose the new hard drive as the destination for the restore. I was told that the install failed to erase the hard drive and to restart and try again. So I did but when I try to erase or partition the drive, there is an error and it fails. The hard drve seems fine since it can be seen by disc utility but after it fails to partition or erase, it disappears from the disc utility forcing me to restart. The process I've done about 5 times now is boot the comp, choose time machine restore, then while the install is calculating the space the restore would require and searching for discs to install on, nothing shows up so I go to disc utility and try to erase or partition the drive only for it to fail and disappear from disc utility. At this point I hold down the power button to turn it off and restart the process.
The first time I tried, the restore process saw the drive while calculating the restores size requirements and allowed me to go the next step where it would automatically try to erase the hard drive (without me having to go into disc utility myself) but after the first try, it just says "searching for disks" and so I go into disc utility myself where I can see the disk.
I am trying to repair my mac. But in disk utility, the hard disk is not visible to proceed. Its showing disk0 -> volume with only 1.79GB. and all the options are disabled. The capacity of my mac book pro was 500GB.

However, my hard drive appears to be running fine - haven't noticed any degradation of performance since receiving the warnings two days ago. And HD is still running quiet (no strange mechanical noises I'm accustomed to hearing prior to a failure). Nevertheless, I'm installing a new HD tomorrow and recloning it from a backup external drive (operating from external until then).

I keep getting this error when trying to erase an external hard drive with Disk Utility. When I restart, the error appears again. I've seen others with this problem but haven't found a solution. I've tried removing iTunes from Applications and deleting select iTunes receipts.

I have a 2009 13 inch macbook pro with 2.4 ghz processor, 4 gb ram, all stock from apple. Machine has been working great until 2 days ago when my system froze, had to push the power off button, tried to reboot but got the flashing folder and the internal hard drive was no longer recognized. I did all the usual things and read the apple support page to no avail. I booted from the install CD and the drive is not recognized in disk utility. I took the drive out, put it in an external case and booted from there and the drive appears to be working.
I put in another internal drive, a Hitachi 500 GB/7200 RPM that looks mac compatible, disc utility will not even recognize it either with the external hard drive OS running or from the install CD. In system profiler, under hardware, it says this computer doesn't contain any ATA drives. Could this be a problem with the SATA cable internally? The rest of the logic board appears to be working as I am typing this on the affected machine running the OS from my former internal hard drive that is now in a casing.
I just replaced the internal hard drive on my G4 iBook. My problem is the drive is not showing up in Disk Utility, the system install disk, or when I have the iBook in target mode and connected to my tower. I believe the old drive had died. When I ran the Hardware Test on it, I received an error code on Mass Storage. After installing the new drive and running the Hardware Test, the Mass Storage passed. I take that as a good sign.?
Before cracking the iBook back open, I was wanting to find out what all the problem may be and what things to check while I have it open since that is not that quick of an operation. I'm already assuming to check the connections on the drive. But if they weren't secure, would it still pass the Hardware Test?
I just installed a Hitachi 1TB drive in my dual 2.5ghz powerPC G5.
I carbon copied my old harddrive over to it.
I didn't want to reinstall my OS.
However I think I copied some problems over.
In Disk Utility when I try to Verify Disk Permissions, Verify Disk, or Repair Disk Permissions (any of the options I am allowed to do to the startup drive) it moves like 1/5th of the time bar meaning it is working then changes to "It will be completed in 1 minute" then stalls there.

I tam trying to add a 75 GB partition to my aluminum iMac's internal HD using Leopard's Disk Utility, but after 7 hours the striped bar appears not to have made any progress and still says "Modifying Partition Map". How long does this usually take? Is this normal?

Other SD cards don't show up neither. There was no pbm accessing the data using an old Windows PC.A user friendly Sofware Function Test of the Internal Card Reader could give a quick answer where to look for error.

After installing a new account on the internal harddisc after software problems, my MAC OS 10 went into lock. Not only the internal harddisc, but also my three external harddiscs. My MAc says I don't have the priviliges to unlock, which is not the case of course. If I go to 'info' I can unlock the lock icon on my user account, but from then on the MAC does not respond to any commands or changes I would like to make.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a 2TB Western Digital My Book Studio FW800 external that has 5 partitions, connected to my 2011 iMac. I had help doing the partitions and don't really remember the reasoning, but one is just for my SuperDuper! backup, one is Miscellaneous, one for movie clips off my camcorder, one for misc scanned photo's and one for my genealogy research. I back up using Time Machine to a Time Capsule and also to this WD hard drive with SuperDuper!
Recently I'm getting a pop up message that "Mac OS X can't repair the disk "Genealogy"'. And it needs to be reformatted. It's become a read only disk. When I look in Disk Utility it shows all the partitions as "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" EXCEPT for the one in question. I also noticed that there are a lot of files with "date created" being the same date in 1969! These files may be letters I've written or photo's I added to that partition within the last few years.
I think I have to completely reformat the entire external hard drive to repair this, but I want to make sure. Because it's going to be a major hassle backing it all up to another external (having to get one first) and then figuring out how to make the files that have turned "read only" in that one partition, back to their original state! Does this sound right, that I have to reformat the entire external hard drive? And how do I get the read-only files back to their original state.

I have a Seagate 1 TB Backup Plus Drive which was working perfectly fine until I plugged it into a USB hub. It detected it while in the hub and I was able to get files off of it, but when I ejected it from the hub and put it back into the USB slot on the computer it was not detected by finder. It shows up in the disk utility and I clicked verify and repair and it says:

Updating boot support partitions for the volume as required.
Disk Utility can’t repair this disk. Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed-up files.
Is there any way to get this to work properly again? Or if not is there a way for me to recover my files on the external hard drive?

I am considering purchasing diskwarrior but want to make sure it can help my situation before I purchase it. My imac will not boot from the internal hard drive (Intel processor) When I use disk utility to try and repair the disk, I get error messages and it won't repair. I can see the HD but cannot repair it. When I connect using target mode with my mac book pro, the hard drive does not appear on my host (macbook pro) computer. I have reloaded OS X (Leopard) onto a firewire external drive and can boot my imac that way but I can not find my original internal Macintosh HD. Will disk warrior be able to help with this scenario. I would really like to access that internal Macintosh HD and retrieve my files.

Both were checked (with Disk Utility and DiskWarrior) and are OK. But only one of the two disks shows in the Startup Disk list in System Preferences->Startup Disk.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI got a Power Mac G4 from a friend. I realized i can store all my content on there and just access it remotely from my 2011 Macbook Pro. While my G4 was running remore desktop it froze. So i held the power button to shut it off and when i restarted it all i get is the Apple logo on the gray screen,and i t wont start in safe mode. I forgot to mention i started togo throught the G4 and take his name off and ad mine (hard drive name and user names). I took the hard drive out and attached it to my MacBook Pro. The hard drive works fine,And i can access everything. I tried running disc utility on the G4 hard drive with my MacBook Pro. and it said ALOT.

I have an external 500GB Freecom USB HDD with two Data partitions on it (FAT32 and NTFS). With a Windows tool, I made the two partitions smaller in order to free up some space (ca. 200GB) for an additional Mac OS Extended (Journaled) partition. This partition I wanted to create with the Mac OSX 10.6.4 Disk Utility. When I pluged in my USB HDD in my new iMac it mounted the two partitions, NTFS and EXT32 and the Disk Utility tool also showed the free (unpartitioned, almost 200GB) space on the HDD. Then, I chose to create a new Mac OS Extended (Journaled) partition and let the tool do it. ...which I probably shouldn't have done. Disk utility stopped and showed an error message saying that it cannot read the partitions anymore and that it needs to be closed. No partitions can be mounted anymore since then on this HDD. So I ran the disk utility, and selected analyze or whatever the button is, and it said I should load it from the INstall DVD, as the disk needs repairing.
Guess what. The disk cannot be repaired.
An error message about expecting 31 files but only finding 30?
It recommends erasing the disk and reinstalling from scratch.
Now, as far as I can see, apart form the slow boot times, everything else still works. Does this mean that it is just a ticking time-bomb that will break any time, or is just a couple of corrupt files that don't matter?
This is really annoying, I love my Mac, but having to reinstall so soon after purchase?
Apologies if there any other posts on here already, it is late, I am stressed, and would like a nice person to help me out.
My external hard drive has been corrupted and the error message is telling me to reformat it. However, through all the research I have done to find out how, everything I've found has told me to use Disk Utility to just erase everything on the disk to do this. When I try to do this, it tells me that I can't erase anything because the disk cannot be unnmounted. What should I do?

I dont know what happened suddenly my laptop stopped recognising internal hard disk. When i'm starting laptop its showing white screen, nothing else. When I keep mac OS dvd its processing but not showing hard disk. I searched in disk utilities there also not able see any hard disk detection. I'm not able to understand what happened.

I have created 2, 1TB partitions. One is for the time machine and the other is for my music, imovies, large artwork files and random documents. Now that all of that is off of the internal hard drive, I need to clean up the dirve do that when I look at the drive, it doesn't say 2 GB available.
