OS X :: Way To Install OS From USB Flash Drive When Partitions Get Crashed

Dec 24, 2009

My MacOS partition recently crashed, fortunately my bootcamp Windows partition still works. The next problem I'm having is that my Mac OS cd is lost and I only have an image of it on my harddrive and dont currently dint have the possibility to burn it.This is what I want to do, I want to put the installation files on a USB driver I have to boot the "installation cd" from there. The problem is that all the guides show how to install it from a flash drive configured from Mac OS. I have MacDrive installed in Windows but im not able to format it to be bootable.

Mac :: Can't Install Windows From USB Flash Drive Installer

Oct 13, 2010

possible it install Windows using a USB Flash Drive configured to function as an Install Disk? Using the generally accepted method for converting a USB flash drive to act as an installation disc my 2010 iMac 27 will not recognize this drive using the boot drive 'option' key method. After formatting the drive as an MBR disk to act as in installer the iMac will not recognize it as a bootable drive. This works fine on other Intel based computers and my GUID USB Flash Drive OSX install image works just fine and is recognizable as a bootable drive.

Mac :: Possible To Install Windows 7 For BootCamp From USB Flash Drive Instead Of Burning It To DVDROM

Jan 10, 2009

Would it be possible to install Windows (7) for BootCamp from a USB Flash Drive instead of burning it to a DVDROM?Installing Windows (Vista) from a Flash Drive [URL]is possible and potentially faster than installing from DVD or ethernet. I'm assuming this should work for Windows 7 as well.So the question that remains is if BootCamp can boot? install from? USB. (I've never tried BootCamp, so I'm not familiar with the process of even starting an install.)

App Store :: Bought Sketch 2 And It Crashed, Can Re-install It

Jun 28, 2012

I bought Sketch 2 from the App Store two days ago. After working less than an hour it froze and I had to restart my Mac. After that every attempt to start Sketch gives an immediate crash. I submitted the error report to Bohemian Coding (the author) but no reaction so far.I downloaded the trial version from their site: it seems to work but it lasts only 14 days. I asked Bohemian Coding for a license key but I got no reaction.

I tried to reinstall following the method described elsewhere in the support forum. Unfortunately, that leaves me with 1) Sketch deleted, 2) App Store still mentions it as "installed". No way to download it a second time. It disappeared from my "purchased" list in App Store.

OS X :: Changing Partitions - Time Machine Will Be Reinstall If I Change My Partitions?

Mar 7, 2010

I have an iMac 2.4ghz with a 320g hd, that I partitioned 50/270 when I installed Leopard. I read somewhere to have the opp system partitioned and I have been kicking myself in the rear ever since. Too many apps and files want to run next to the opp system, so I'm starting over.I used time machine for a backup of the system (both partitions are showing) on my 1 TB iomega external hard drive (minimax). I partitioned the external 500/500, time machine/additional storage. So that is what I'm working with, now for the question:With my backup complete, if I do a clean install to the internal hard drive (320g) in order to remove the 50g opp/sys partition and just have one 320g internal hd; will my time machine be able to restore to a clean 320 without having the 50/270gig partition setup? If so will this be a somewhat simple process?

Software :: Snow Leopard Install Crashed On MBP With Broken Superdrive

Sep 23, 2010

So, I have an old Mac Book Pro (circa 2006) that had become sluggish and old, so I wanted to completely reformat it and use it purely for Logic Mainstage.

The superdrive stopped working about a year and a half ago, so I wirelessly (a not so great idea, I now realise) connected to my iMacs superdrive and began installing Snow Leopard. However, the install crashed 3/4 of the way through and now the MBP shuts itself down after spending around 5 minutes on the grey apple/spinning disc logo on startup.

It seems like a lost cause but is there any way to fix this?

OS X :: Mac Not Seeing All Partitions On NTFS Firewire Drive

Dec 27, 2010

I've had my MBP since August of this year, but only recently connected an NTFS drive via Firewire for the first time. I am primarily going to be moving the data from the NTFS drive onto an HFS drive. My only issue is that my MBP is only recognizing one out of two partitions on the NTFS drive (The "first" partition. If I connect back to my Windows PC, everything is recognized fine. I've since moved the data that I want to transfer from Partition 2 to Partition 1 and I'm able to access it correctly, however I'm confused as to why this is happening (still fairly new to Macs).

MacBook Pro :: New 640GB Drive - How Many Partitions

Dec 3, 2009

I replaced the 160GB drive in my 13" MBP with a 640GB drive. I now have the 160 in an external enclosure. I got the huge drive so I can finally copy all my crap from my PC to my MBP and have it in one place. I don't have any big external drives, so I had 2 ideas:

- Make the 640 into 100 and 540 partitions, with the system on 100, and use the external 160 with time machine (assuming that's possible with TM?).
- Make the 640 into 160 and 480, system on 160, clone the system to the external 160 regularly as a backup. This seems better since the external will then be a full working system (I assume), in case my internal drive would ever break.

With either of these, I'm wondering how easy it is to separate all my media onto the other partition, like the itunes library, pictures folder, movies, downloads, etc. Or Should I just stick with one huge partition, and figure out some other partial-backup solution / wait till I get a big external?

Mac Pro :: How To Recover Data From Crashed Drive?

Oct 23, 2010

So unfortunately, the hard drive on my 2005 G5 crashed, atleast that's my guess. All it does is click when I attempt to turn it on. I'm fairly good with computers, but when it comes to fixing one - I hand it off to someone with a little more knowledge.

I have two hard drives in the computer - one that's got the OS installed (factory 150GB), and another I use for saving videos, pictures, music, etc (750GB). Now, I'm assuming that because the computer doesn't boot up, that the hard drive with the OS is the one that crashed? Is that a safe assumption?

Secondly, is it possible to recover the application files and other data that's been stored on the crashed drive? If so, how much should I expect to pay? Is it something a local 'work from the home' computer tech could do? The reason I ask is because craigslist is full of guys willing to work on the computer for a decent price.

OS X :: Crashed Hard Drive Secure?

Sep 10, 2009

I swapped out my stock 160GB HDD for a 500GB WD HDD a year ago and put the old HDD into an enclosure. I guess I didn't screw it in tight enough and after jostling around a move or two, I just plugged it in to clear the clicking sound of a crashed drive. I can't even mount it onto my computer, so I pretty sure it's gone. My question is: I was about to take it to Best Buy to put in their electronic recycling bin, when I wondered if whatever data that was on there is secure, and if there's another step I should be taking before disposing of it properly.

OS X Mavericks :: External Drive Partitions Inside Themselves?

Dec 1, 2014

I use a 250GB external HD for most of my working files. It has five equal partitions. In one of the partitions--Cedar Mill (see attached images) --another partition (CM News) shows up in Finder. Inside CM News is another copy of itself ad infinitum...

I am reluctant to delete them without knowing what I'm doing. How they got this way.

I haven't noticed any particular problems, except possibly slow search times for opening/finding files...

Hardware :: External Hard Drive Crashed

Dec 21, 2009

My 500GB external hard drive (Hitachi DeskStar) crashed! The blue light comes on, and I can hear the hard drive spinning, then sounds like it's stuck, or clicking ...

Same thing happens to the internal HD on my iBook G4. Sometimes the internal HD works, sometimes not.

I desparately need to find someway to attempt to either fix the external 500GB HD, or recover the files. The 500GB was my main HD, and I have so much very important data that I need to recover (no backups!).

I have years of research (lots of family history), thousands of pictures (many very old), my personal journals that I've been keeping for years, personal information, letters, documents, family videos, and all of my e-mail.

Somebody was telling me that there is special software that will recognize the HD, and allow you to recover the files.

What would you recommend? At the present I have no money to do anything, but will save up for the recovery software. My uncle is getting me a new hard drive, so I'll have that to back up the files when I have the recovery software ...

OS X :: Hard Drive Containing Aperture Library Crashed

Sep 26, 2010

Luckily, this is not my primary Aperture library, but another one that I started a few weeks ago as I thought my first was getting a bit large. I am unable to open Aperture at all, nor can I copy to or from the drive. Because the drive is (I believe) bad, I can't repair the library, plus, as I mentioned, I can't open Aperture anyways. I can pull the drive, but then how do I get Aperture to redirect itself so that it opens my original library, instead of trying to open this new one? Pulled the suspicious drive from my Mac Pro. On restarting, Aperture asked which Library I wanted, adding that one was no longer available. So, I'm back on the original library and things look to be running fine. Unfortunately, I hadn't vaulted yet, so the last month is probably gone. Luckily, I think I already exported the few keepers I had during that time.

OS X :: Mac Crashed Repeatedly / Hard Drive Not Recognized

Dec 30, 2009

I have a 2007/2008 MBP 2.4Ghz running 10.6.2. I was having repeated hard crashes
due, I think, to some stupid firefox mods I made a few days ago. Every 1-3 hours, the system would freeze, make that crackly thinking really hard noise, spin the beach ball, and wait for me to hard restart. This happens 3 or 4 times today, and on the last crash, the system hangs on restart. Grey screen, spinning grey circle of circles for 10 or so minutes. I can't wait any longer, so I hard restart again, and again the system hangs indefinitely. Now I start to get a bit worried. I boot from the Snow Leopard install disk and open disk utility. From there, I attempted to verify permissions, but the process hangs with one minute remaining for at least 20 minutes. A crash while trying to repair a crash. Great.

So I hard restart AGAIN, and open disk utility, this time selecting repair disk. The utility detects a few errors, supposedly corrects them, then hangs for about 2 minutes, finally culminating in the hard drive disappearing act. The bar looks complete, but the hard drive is gone from the list! GONE! I can't select it from the sidebar in Disk Utility. It doesn't show up in the Startup Disk menu. The only drive I can access is the dvd drive with the Leopard disk. I opened System Profiler and looked under Serial-ATA, and found the only entry was for an Intel ICH8-M ACHI. I don't remember that being there. It used to be a Matsushita drive. Can't find anything on google, and I want to do whatever I can before giving up hope on all my data. Haven't made a backup in a while.
