How do I obtain a backup copy of Lion

With some minor exceptions, primarily for game playing for a few years in the late 90s, I haven't used Windows, well, basically ever (ok, I used DOS some until the mid-90s), mostly using various forms of Unix/Linux and Mac OS X. I have never purchased a Microsoft product directly (I've obtained licenses indirectly though).

I can't copy a Time Machine backup file (Backups.backupb) from one external hard drive to another. Both hard drives are Seagate 1TB Backup Plus. The Backups.backupb file is about 275GB. When I try to drag and drop the Backups.backupb file from one drive to the other (which I've tried three times) it to begins copy but after about 3GBs are copied I get a message that says "The operation can’t be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code -50)."
I formatted (erased) the new hard drive with Disk Utility as Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Apple Support says I should format the new drive in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) "with a GUID partition," but I don't see the GUID partition as an option when I format the drive. Is this necessary, and if so, how do it do it? I'm using OS 10.8.6 on a 2012 MacBook Pro retna.
I also tried copying the backup files to another drive (a Maxtor HD) and got the same error message.
I need to create a Watch Folder that when a file is dropped in, a folder action is triggered and that file is moved to another folder and an email is sent to say that the file has been moved.
The easy bit is creating the Watch Folder action, I have that working no problem. I can also send the email but what I can't figure out is how to customize the email content to say which specific file has been moved? How can I obtain the file name and paste that into the email notification?

Can someone advise please as I can't seem to find an option on my PC saying show hidden files etc, if that's the case?

I am using Retrospect 6.1.126 and created a 7 day rotating backup -- on the first day's backup all the files I wanted were backed up to my external hard drive, about 80 GB. On day 2 instead of just backing up the modified files as in a normal backup, all the old files were backed up again, another 80 or so GB. On day 3 the same thing. I now have 267 GB on the external hard drive, at that rate it will be filled in another few days.ow can I change the 7 day rotating backup to copy all files on day 1 and on all subsequent days to only copy modified files as in a normal backup?

View 6 Replies View RelatedI currently back up onto a 250gb external hard drive using Time Machine. This is now full, so today I purchased a new 1TB drive. I would like to keep all my backups in one place, so would it be possible to copy all my past Time machine backup data/files to my new disk and then start backing up to this in the future. How to do I get Time Machine to see that I have swapped disks when I come to restore files? Will doing this confuse Time Machine?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have just tried to back up my G4 Sawtooth computer with Carbon Copy Cloner (incremental backup). I put the application into "Applications," as the graphic indicated, then was offered "Macintosh HD" as the source for the files I wanted to back up (but nothing else) and chose my external LaCie drive as the target. Now, when I click on Macintosh HD, it shows a lot of files, but that is not all that is on the computer; there also are all those OS X folders, such as Applications, Desktop, Documents, Network and all that. I was not offered any other option than "Macintosh HD," but silly me, I thought that meant my whole drive, not just the files in the entity by that name that appears at the left side of my screen.

I'm trying to reuse an old imac (800 mhz G4 PPC 512 mb). It has 10.3.9 installed. I had hoped to install Leopard so I could use its built-in parental controls. Unfortunately the machine is 67 mhz too slow, and Leopard won't install. Anyone have ideas about how to obtain the same type of parental controls (auto logout at a certain time, no access during specified hours, etc) with a software solution?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a PS3 and a new Time Capsule. Want to connect the PS3 via Cat5e cable to Time Capsule and register an IP through the Time Capsule. The reason for this is that I am trying to stream wirelessly at 5Ghz from Laptop (wireless n) to TC (wireless n) and then have the Gigabit cable transfer data rapidly to the PS3 so that 1080p films can be played without stutter. The problem is that when I hook up the PS3 to the TC via "wired connection" in the PS3 network settings, it won't gather an IP address through the TC and network connection fails.
