Sep 2, 2008I'm installing OSX now but wondering if a direct hardrive copy is better than my time machine backup, or should i have just imaged my old HD?

Notes. Failed HDD ASD Test.  A new hard drive was installed in September of 2011 after the previous hard drive failed. Having worked well until now the system seems to give the same problems as it had previously. I am wondering if this is a compatibility issue as others have pointed out. Â
I have been told by the technician my only option is to replace the entire hard drive again for the second time with a new one. However to my understanding a ASD test is very specific and this my not be necessary? Further I am attempting a final backup just in case. I don't have to take it in where I could just back it up myself without the system shutting down.

I'm trying to copy my backup drive data to a new drive. The first one ran out of space, so I bought a larger one and am trying to transfer all the data. I have tried using disk utility, but it refuses to copy it. Also dragging and dropping the file doesn't work either.

I recently upgraded my iMac G5 which was running mac 10.5.8 to an iMac intel 10.6. I took the HD out of the G5, put it in an enclosure, and formatted it. Can I use that drive as a backup drive on my Macbook Air using Carbon Copy Cloner? The drive in the enclosure is powered so there should be no strain on the Air's system?

with cloning/copying the content one an external hard drive onto a new external hard drive. Basically, I have a 500GB FW400 drive which I use to store my media files. It's full, so I purchased a 1TB FW800 drive to replace it. Obviously, I thought I could simply copy and paste the media files from the old drive to the new one.I cannot copy the media files to my internal drive first as my internal drive is only 250GB and nearly full itself.I have used Disk Utility to attempt to close the old drive to the new drive, but keep getting "insufficient space" errors.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI just upgraded my HD on my new MBP13.
I upgraded it from 250GB to a 500GB 7200RPM WD Scorpio Black. However the noise was definitely noticeable for me and I have changed it back to the 250 5400RPM GB Seagate Momentus. Sucks to have lost the money
Now the thing is I need 500 GB and I want it to be a internal hard disk. I was thinking about buying 500 GB 5400RPM Scorpio Blue or a Seagate 5400RPM Momentus. Not decided yet(any recommendation?).
The problem is though I want to begin using my system. I want to install programs etc. Is there an easy way to copy the whole system to the new hard drive when it arrives?
I have another (windows) pc with an external NFTS disk.
My internal hard drive is running out of space, and I want to buy a new one. But to do that, I'll have to buy a external hard drive to back up everything and then copy it back onto the new internal hard drive , right? I don't have that much budget. So can I use the old internal hard drive that I took out of my Macbook and copy everthing back into the new internal hard drive after the repalecment? so I don't need to buy a external hard drive to back up everythingÂ

I want to drag files to an external hard drive as a hard copy. I have already set up "Time Machine".

I have had both my MacBook and external hard drive for over three years now, and have never had a problem. In the last week, my external hard drive stopped letting me copy files onto it. When you try to drag and drop it just comes up with the blocked symbol. I have tested this with other hard drives as well and keep getting the same error. I've read other forums where it seems the answer is just to reformat the hard drive to the correct format, but I've never had a problem before so it seems strange that the format would just suddenly change.Â

Basically I have a 750GB hard drive in my Macbook Pro and over 300GB is taken up with 'BackUp' data. This is more than the total of everything I have on the drive other than that. Time Machine has always been setup on an external drive and when searching all files on the Macbook there is nothing for backup files so don't know where it is coming from.

my white macbooks hard drive broke along with my cd drive. I purchased a new hard drive and put it in but now I have no way to install Leopard since my cd drive is broke.I do understand the best way would be to buy an external CD drive and use that but I would rather not waste all that money on one use.I do have a firewire cable and my friend has a white macbook. I've heard that you can boot using another computer and use there cd drive via firewire by holding "T" or whatever.

View 6 Replies View RelatedSo i was given a macbook Model: A1181, but without a hard drive. so i thought okay, ill go buy a hard drive. so i go to buy a hard drive, Sata, which what the computer is, and connect it. I have a copy of 10.4 laying around so i go to boot from that disc by holding down the "c" key on boot and there is the standard mac startup chime , but the screen remains white until it flashes the folder with a question mark saying that it can't find the startup disc i also tried to hold down option on boot for startup manager but all i get is a cursor and it never gets to the startup manager. How should i proceed, because i can't get the original hard drive.

My hard drive died last week on my MacBook and I failed to back up anything forever the last couple of months. Anyway, I took it to the genius bar and they confirmed its death, and showed me how to replace it. I decided to go ahead and do so on my own, and also upgraded the memory while I was in there. I also decided to upgrade to lion since my DVD drive was giving me trouble and it'd be easier to use the USB - and yes the computer meets the requirements for Lion. The problem is that when I try to boot up to format the HD, I only get a black screen. No disk utility when holding option, nothing. What am I doing wrong?

View 8 Replies View RelatedI think I'm going to format my hard drive to delete everything from it and start fresh with leopard. I already have leopard installed, but I think I should just format my hard drive (after backing up what I truly need like my music and other files) and then just install leopard.
Question, I have read that I go to disk utility to do this (format and install leopard), is this correct? If so, what else do I need to know before I do this?
Just wondering if it's possible to install games (like Diablo III) to an external drive so it doesn't take up any precious GBs on my MacBook Air. Â

I'm trying to put a 10gb sized video onto my hard drive but it won't allow me. I don't want to format it for 2 reasons.
1) i don't have space to back up and
2) the purpose of putting it on the hard drive is so I can watch the video through my blu ray player's usb port.
in disk utility, if i erase and use a volume format other than ms-dos (fat), the blu ray player doesn't pick p on the drive.
How to copy files to external hard disk and use it for both mac and windows. there is the fat32 formatting bt i dont wanna use formatting because i already have a lot of content on the exteral hard disk.
