OS X V10.7 Lion :: Use Parallels To Create A Virtual PC Running Windows 7?
Mar 13, 2012
I use Parallels to create a virtual PC running Windows 7. I have installed Office 2010 on the PC side and Office 2011 on the Mac. All VBA works fine on the PC side, but bombs on the Mac. It was my understanding (directly from Apple) that with the release of Office 2011 for the Mac that all code was now conforming with the PC version. This is probably true for new code written under Office 2010 (PC), however, most all of my applications have been developed over time through many versions of Windows based software (probably the last 10 years)…to date I have never had an issue with compatibility (on the Windows side). I have done some online research into the errors that I receive, however I am really an novice/intermediate programmer and am unable to find adequate solutions to the initial problems (as shown below).
Once I receive the run-time error 1004 I use the debug feature, etc. and end with "Can't find project or library. The initial error is probably just the beginning, but I am unable to go forward from this point.

I have an HP windows xp disc that came with the laptop. It's not letting me install it on Parallels. I am thinking because it needs to hard drives for it? One for windows xp and the other one for recovery. The laptop has drive C and D. How can I make it work on Parallels?

I recently upgraded from my MBP to a new i5 iMac, and with the new HD space I'm now able to use some valuable disk space for a windows partition. I installed WinXP (seemed fine in Boot Camp), and began the process of installing Parallels 5. I was able to create a virtual machine, but when I try to run Parallels it goes into a "configuring your virtual machine" window (Steps 1 of 4) that just seems to run and run (ran it all last night with no progress further than about 25%).

Installed Windows 7 to my Parallels 5.0 setup earlier tonight. Everything went well, but for some strange reason, I'm unable to allocate more than 1Gb of RAM to Windows. My Mac has 4gigs of RAM and I would ideally like to allocate 2gigs to my Windows VM (I won't be using it that often) but when I open the Memory pane of the Virtual Machine Configuration panel, I'm unable to move the slider in either direction, nor am I able to manually adjust the RAM value. Sure this can't be right.

When I insert a CD or DVD into my 27" iMac (early 2012) my OSX side doesn't recognize the disk, I can't access data or eject it. However, I can access the disk and its contents thru my Windows virtual machine (Parallels) so I know the drive works. Is this a Parallels settings issue or do I need to change settings/other in my OSX systems preferences?

I just purchased a new iMac (2.66 c2d & 4gb of ram), Parallels 4, and Windows XP.
I would like to get great performance whenever I use Windows XP and would like to know which installation procedure would help accomplish that.
Would Parallels provide me with a better user experience by installing Windows directly via Parallels OR by having Parallels utilizing a Boot Camp Partition?

If I could I would get rid of everything related to Microsoft but unfortunately I need to use Windows applications for my work. Specifically, Autocad Civil 3D, Revit Architecture and a bunch of structural engineering programs. I have tried running these applications on Parallels on Mac systems such as MacBook Pro Mid 2009 (2.93 C2D, 4gb ram) but was not satisfied with the performance. Autocad was lagging even when working in 2D. I don't even have to talk about Revit... I never had the opportunity to test this on more powerful systems and this is where I need your advice. Is it possible for the Mac Pro to run these applications on Parallels seamlessly? That is, as if you were running Windows on a PC? What is more important CPU, RAM, GPU? To catch up with a few possible comments, a) I don't want to run Windows via bootcamp, b) I am aware that Autacad is coming to Mac OS but I need the extra features of Civil 3D and Revit.

I received parallels 4.0 as a gift 2 months ago and did not install the software. But now, as win7 is out, I am really interested to get it installed, but is it recommended to run Win7 (64-bit) on Parallels 4.0 and not the latest version of Parallels? Sadly, I could not get it exchanged for parallels 5.0 in my local stores. Will it crash or lag my macbook pro? My system is 2.66GHz and 320GB, bought in oct 2009 mbp.

I am having a very hard time installing doss 6.22 on my Mac. Why would I want too? Well cause of work, we have some a lot of old data at work that was collected over the years using dos programs and I need to go threw it and pull out what I need, when I need it. So having it on my laptop would be great. I have tried both Parallels & VMware with no luck. I can't get them to realize that I have a floppy drive, it's a usb floppy drive. I have 6gig of memory running snow lepoard. I have been thinking of trying the Sun Microsystem software but thought I would ask here first.

I have installed Windows 7 using bootcamp with no problems. I now want to use parallel so I can do some things in windows without restarting. I don't want to get rid of the bootcamp install though since I do gaming through it. Now that I've installed Parallel it's asking if I want to use the bootcamp partition in the virtual machine? Do I? I don't really understand.

My 8 gigs of RAM came today! Now I have 10 gigs in my Mac Pro. The first thing I wanted to do was to play a game in Parallels under Windows XP (32 bit, for now). However, upon booting into XP in Parallels and running the game, half the graphics are not displaying (very choppy) and I can hardly even move my mouse it's so slow. I right clicked My Computer and hit properties and it showed only 512 megs of RAM being used. I went into Parallels settings and changed Memory Allocation from automatic to custom and cut the RAM in half by moving the slider to the middle (4~5 gigs for Windows and 4~5 for Leopard, which is fine), rebooted the Virtual Machine and it still showed 512 megabytes, and the game was still slow. I know that my system recognizes the RAM because in About This Mac it shows 10 gigs.

I finally made the switch from PC to Mac buy selling my HP laptop and desktop computers and buying the new MacBook Pro. However, I have licenses for Creative Suite 4 for Windows and still need to run it on my Mac using Boot Camp and/or Parallels until I can afford to jump to CS5 for Mac (this MBP took a big chunk of my cash). I'd like to run Windows using Boot Camp AND Parallels - Boot Camp when I need all system resources and Parallels when I need to hop over to Windows to type a Word document or something quick (got Office 2007 for Windows too).
Can I use both Boot Camp and Parallels with one serial number for Windows 7? If so, how do I install? Would I install Windows on Boot Camp or Parallels first? If anyone has some guidance for installing one copy of Windows 7 on both applications

OK, I know that I can't run XP using Boot Camp under Lion and my new MacBook Pro - but can I use it running Parallels? I bought XP but have no desire to purchase Windows 7 at the outrageous prices that Microsoft charges. I got Parallels in a 'bundle' that I purchased through MacWorld, so I already have it.
Just wondering - before I go through the laborious task of finding my ancient XP disc.

This is the first time I've tried OWC memory. So far, so good - the Mac recognizes the RAM and boots okay. Everything I've tried thus far post-upgrade works. I am a happy camper now - my Mac was a bit sluggish due to running out of physical RAM running Parallels.

So I started using my MacBook Pro as a device I connect to my TV. I have an HDMI adapter, and, after setting up the display and sound, it is awesome! I even purchased a Trackpad so I can sit on my couch and navigate. The cost of the adapter and Trackpad are more than paid for with my canceling of cable.
Anyway, my question is about the virtual keyboard in OS X. It doesn't happen often, but I sometimes have to type in a user name or password for sites. I know how to go through "System Preferences", "Universal Access", and then "Keyboard Preferences" to turn it on, but is there a faster way?
What I really want to know is if I can create a shortcut in my dock for the virtual keyboard?
If not, does anyone know of any third party, virtual keyboard applications that would work this way?
