OS X V10.7 Lion :: Unsecured Wifi Network On List
Mar 21, 2012
I see another unsecured wifi network (D Link) on my list. As I have recently replaced an old modem router (D link) with a new fancy one (wireless gateway), I am wondering if this is somehow still attached to my computer. The D link wifi unsecured network has a different IP address than my newly formed secure wifi network's IP address. Also - if I turn my wifi off (regardless of if I am on the dlink or my new secured wifi) I can still watch netflix etc. on my tv from living room which tells me the the wifi is still on. Why is this so?Does my Mac have two IP addresses or is that D link someone elses?

Is there any way I can safely browse the internet on my Mac using an unsecured wireless network? I know people do it all the time now and I'm wondering if there are any precautions I can take like when I'm paying bills for buying something online with my credit card?

There must be a way to rename one's own wifi network, but I can't seem to find where that can be done. I opened Network Preferences and tried clicking Advanced, but I don't see anything there that looks like it would do it. How is it done?

I worked out this bugger mostly by chance, some people online are offering some out date info on this topic. Which involves pressing a pencil icon in the advanced area of network to pull up the hidden password, but that is not available. I found it in KeyChain that is easy to find in the Utilities. Its pretty easy to work it out from there.

I have an iMac running Lion hardwired to an internet connection and want to create a wifi network from this connection I have gone to 'create network' and set up - all seems fine. I have then tried to connect to this network with my iPhone. The phone recognises the network and it looks as though it has connected as it is ticked in the networks, but unfortunately it hasn't as my phone won't connect to the internet.Â

I have a MacPro Early 2009, 2 ethernet ports.Ethernet 1 is connected to the LAN and Ethernet 2 is connected directly to a SSL Matrix console (an audio mixer), whom driver needs the used ethernet port to be first of the list in the Network connections list in System Preferences. So when I browse internet I can't use the Matrix's software, and vice versa.I had to create 2 different network positions to browse internet and to work with SSL Matrix, one with Eth 1 first place, another one with Eth 2 first place, and I always have to swap positions. Is there a way to force OSX to use by default the 2nd connection of the list for internet access?Â

MacBook. 2Ghz Intel Core Duo. OS Snow Leopard 10.6.6. I'm running a 2006 MacBook with Snow Leopard. A few months back it started dropping wifi connection. Airport would show no connection but would list my network along with others in my building. If I tried to connect with my WPA password it would just time out. At this time I was running Leopard.
Since then I've done a few things.Tried running the Netgear router with no encryption at all (same thing happens). Will lose connection and then time out trying to connect
I've tried the MacBook in a coffee shop with wifi access and at my parents (same NetGear router) and at my new apartment with a horrible Orange Livebox.
Taken the MacBook in to see the genius bar at Glasgow Apple store. Worked fine for them, but I explained it was intermittent but we could not force it to fail. I'm sure if it ran for an hour it would.
At present if I have the MacBook in the living room (where the Livebox router is situated) its fine and wont drop connection. If I walk some 5m to my bedroom it will work for approximately half and hour and then lose it. A few days ago I bought the Snow Leopard upgrade and installed it last night. MacBook runs a hell of a lot faster (yay!) but moving it away from the router and its dead as disco in half an hour.
So to clarify, the MacBook has been tested on 4 wifi networks/ locus with same issue. iPhone, Xbox 360 and PS3 all have no issues with dropping connection no matter where they are in the apartment.
Apartment is a new build and its walls are not made out of lead or kryptonite. Is this a hardware issue rather than software? When updating to Snow Leopard it was an update to the existing OS of Leopard not a clean install.

I have a Macbook Pro 2009 with Mavericks.I will be working happily on the internet then suddenly the wifi stops working. When I click the wifi icon, the list of wifi networks has disappeared.
The only fix I've found is reboot, then the list reappears, but only for a while then the wifi networks disappear again.
Could this be the Airport card needs replacing or something else? I'm guessing it is, but need to know if it could be something else first. Would a new airport card fix it?
I have a brand new macbook pro which doesn't experience this problem and works perfectly, so I guess it's not the router or Airport Extreme that I use.

In my house, there are several available WiFi networks, including my airport. I tried joining one of the others once when mine was down, and now my computer regularly attempts to join that one when ever it wakes up. Can I make it forget to join that network, or make mine its first preference?

I am trying to get G5 (10.4) to use a network printer MP160 connected to a windows XP machine.
This is what I have done so far: Downloaded and installed the latest MP160 printer package for the Mac. Plugged the MP160 directly into the Mac USB port, the printer is instantly recognised and is installed as the default printer. It prints just fine. This leads me to believe the MP160 driver exists in the Mac. Now I transfer the printer to the XP. Using another (wireless) networked windows laptop I have no problem printing to the XP printer so that shows the sharing is working correctly. At the Mac I open printer setup. I then add the printer, selecting it, where I see it listed on the XP machine in (mac) Windows Printing/Network Neighbourhood. The printer name is seen just as it is on the XP.
Now the point it all goes wrong. During the setup, the utility ask me to select the printer model I want to add from a list it displays under the canon group of drivers. No matter what I do the list cannot be updated or amended to include the MP160 model. The BJ gimp drivers don't appear to support the MP160. I get the print job message "Gimp printing.....20%" and various values depending on the model selected and eventually, "NT status network bad name error". The generic printer driver returns the same error. I have tried just about every type of connection using the setup utility and localhost 631 but I always end up at the same point, not being able to select the model. There are no networking issues as far as I can see. The Mac can see and use shared files on the windows machines.

I'm having some trouble adding network printers in Tiger. If I open the print&fax window and then click on the "+" sign to add printers, nothing comes up. I thought a new screen was supposed to pop up, but nothing happens. If I try to print something from Word or Excel and select "add printer" in the print menu, also nothing happens. I do find a list of "bonjour printers", but I'm not sure how this can help me. So in the end it seems I can't add any printers at all, and thus not print.

When I click the Airport Networks icon in the menu bar (top right), my airport detects all the available networks. It lists some networks which are not mine and don't even require a password. Is there some way to remove these specific networks from the list, and so they don't get detected again? (I don't want to click by mistake a network that's not mine)

I have a high speed wi-fi connection in my home. My MacBookAir looks like its always looking to connect to Network vs. just staying logged into the preferred Network. I see this is a slow process that affects the speed of my surfing the web. Â
What I'm I doing wrong in my settings? is it something to do with Configuration of IPv4 in TCP/IP; my is at "using DHCP". Should I have something in 802.1X Profile Information? Proxies; I have my set to "Auto Proxy Discovery" Â
Why cant I surf seamlessly? Why dos it look like my Wi-Fi is always trying to connect to my home Network?Â

my mother's MacBook Pro doesn't automatically connect to our home's wireless network. It's encrypted with WPA2. My MBP and my sister's MacBook stay connected fine. My mother's, however, requires her to click on the AirPort icon at the top and select our network each time she wakes it or boots it up. This only started happening when I put WPA2 on the network. How do I fix this?

Are there any PC Cards (I think that's what they were called) that allow you to get online when out of wifi range, when traveling etc.? Or I think I'd heard about a way you can connect your macbook to your iphone, and piggyback the connection that way, I think called a Leash perhaps? I'm travelling to my in-laws, who don't have wifi and we're trying to figure out how to get online there with our macbooks.

A friend of mine is having an issue with the wifi. When they use a MacBook on a wifi network, it tends to keep the family's IBM laptop off the network. This happens on all networks the two computers try to join, and in some cases other PCs on the network.
