View 2 RepliesI have a new iMac and I want to transfer my Apple Mail from my older Mac Book Pro running Snow Leopard to it. I've zipped up the Mail folder that was under Library and I found out how to access the hidden Library on my iMac. I see mail has changed a bit in Lion and before I unzip my mail folder into /Library/Mail, I want to make sure I won't screw anything up.Â

I have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 on my Mac Pro and also backup using Time Machine. My main (startup) hard drive is close to failing-- before it does I want to transfer everything to a new internal drive. Seems to be there are several ways to do this:
1. Clone the original drive to the newer drive with 3rd party software (such as ChronoSync?)
2. Restore to the new HDD from Time Machine (which I believe requires me to clean install Snow Leopard on the new drive?)
3. Use Migration Assistant.
Which would be the best route?

So my current computer is an iBook G4, running 10.4. It's been a good computer for me, but it is certainly starting to show it's age and slowing down. I'm thinking of upgrading to a Macbook Pro with 10.6. My question is what would be the best way to transfer my data from my iBook to a new Macbook Pro? Thank you.

Simple, I have a file on the desktop and I want to copy it to a folder in my external drive.Â
The Problem Instead of pasting the file in the selected folder it is pasting it in the root directory. It does this with my external drive as well as my internal mac drive. Never have seen this before.

In order to use Lion’s encrypted (Core Storage) external drive feature, I needed to reformat an external 1TB drive with Apple Partition Map, as that works only with GPT. The only partition was HFS+J formatted and was used as Time Machine Backup, which I wanted to preserve.Â
Act I:
I connected the drive to another iMac running 10.6 which happened to have enough space on the internal HD. I read this article http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5096 , which describes how to copy the BackupDB just by drag and drop. In hindsight, that was a bad idea, I should have created a disk image like suggested elsewhere, but if Apple itself suggests it, it can’t be so bad right?Â
So I just dragged the whole BackupDB to random folder on the iMac (after enabling ownership), and apparently it copied correctly the dir-hardlinks, as the resulting folder had the same size. Â
It seems that the Finder activates a special dir-hardlink aware copying mode when one does this. This is also confirmed by the fact that the Finder will refuse to copy the BackupDB together with other files, you have to drag and drop the BackupDB only.Â
Act II:
I reformatted the external drive as HFS+J with GPT and activated ownership.. But now, when I try to copy the BackupDB back, it continues to count indefinitely the number of files to copy! I speculate that the special dir-hardlink aware mode is not activated, but what can I do? How can I trigger it? Is there some hidden command line tool which handles this?Â
The lesson I’m drawing from this is: use the method described in the article only if you copy the backupDB from your old to your new drive.Â

I bought a new MacBook Pro, which has Lion. My old MacBook Pro has Snow Leopard. Last night I used migration assistant to move everything from my old computer to my new computer. My instincts told me not to do it, because my old computer is 6 yrs old and has so much stuff on it. I was thinking it might be better to just go on an as needed basis, however, there is so much I need, I decided to do it.Â
Problem one, CS5 will not work. Maybe I need to do a clean install?Â
Are there any other issues I should be aware of? I see I need to re-enter my license info for Word ...Â
Have I messed up my new machine? Should I start over and wipe the new one clean and use another method?
