Mac Pro :: Computer Restarts Instead Of Shutting Down
Apr 7, 2010For the last few months, my MP has had a strange quirk. When I select Shutdown, the computer restarts instead. Then, at the login screen, I select shutdown and it will then turn off. I've tried disconnecting all USB and Firewire connections (except keyboard and mouse) with the same results. It does seem to be time related. For example, if I start up the computer, get to the desktop and then shutdown, it turns off no problem. However, after its been running for a bit it will do the restart thing instead.

Jan 15, 2010I have a late 2009 model MacBook Pro and lately I've noticed that it sometimes - seemingly at random - restarts itself when I tell it to shutdown (through the Apple menu then Shut Down)
Anyone encountered this or know how to fix it? I haven't had any other problems except for a month or two back it did an update then stuck on a blue screen with a little loading icon like you get under the apple when it starts up normally. After half an hour of waiting, I performed a hard reset, and it worked fine.

Jan 29, 2010I have a Macbook pro 2.4Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo witch i bought before 1 year before 3 days it started to doing this problem: i choose shut down and instead of that it restarts. I did the command option P R thing to reset but didnt work also does that when im going to safe mode. i also try to clean install my operating system but still nothing happens the problem is there i did also a hardware test and everything is ok verify disk : ok permissions ok: i dont know what else to do?

Jul 31, 2010I have a Macbook Pro from 2007 (aluminium keyboard). Everything was working great until a couple of days ago, when I replaced the battery.
No every time I choose to shut down the computer, it will restart and NOT shutdown. I have tried several things - the only thing that seems to work is to unplug the power chord - then it will shut down, but if the power plug is connected, the computer basically can't shut down - it just restarts.

Aug 5, 2009So this past week when my mini hasn't stayed in sleep mode, it shuts itself down about a minute later after being in sleep mode. I haven't changed any of my settings in a year and a half, normally it would stay in sleep mode until i come back to it and logged on again. When it does shut down i just cannot power back on i have to unplug the adapter then replug it in for it to start up again. I've searched google and on here for possible ideas. I wouldn't think it to be overheating since I'm not running any applications when i put it in sleep. It might be the power supply since i have to do that process to get it to work again. Let me know what could be causing this or ways to troubleshoot this problem.

Jan 14, 2010I've googled to see if I can find a solution to this but not had any luck - wonder if you could help. My Mac Mini is 1.5Ghz PowerPc G4, 512Mb RAM, running Mac OS X Version 10.5.8. I bought it second hand a couple of years ago and in the past while it's really been playing up a bit. It first started overheating and shutting down when I was doing really resource intensive stuff - for example, opening a large amount of RAW image files. However, it's now started taking to shutting down when I'm doing normal browsing, using Spotify etc The machine also tends to hang a lot, and I can't really stream videos very well either. The vents at the back of the Mac definitely aren't blocked and there's plenty of space around the machine to let the air circulate.

May 13, 2012When I choose sleep from the Apple menu my Mac Mini with 10.7.4 just shuts off without sleeping. Choosing shut-off however results in an ongoing gray screen with a rotating sign (not the beachball), until I press the on/off switch for about 10 seconds.
Resetting the SMC does not help. Programs like DiskWarrior, Apple hardware test do not find any problems.

Apr 10, 2012before a week ago i locked my macbook pro from icloud. something bud happened. my mac reboots and starts from recovery disk. the only think came to my mind is to install snow leopard from my installation disk(came with laptop) and then install lion.this is something i have done before and works ok.when snow leopard had succefully install i open app store and download my allready purchace mac os lion. when dowload finished i install it and nothing went ok. it puts me again to the recovery page and says re-install lion or online help etc. the only think that i could do is to delete recovery hd and install lion.when i did this it works but my software doesn't work right and find my mac not works.
i create again by myshelf a recovery hd drive and when i restart the laptop it opens from there not from os lion. so i open the terminal using my snow leopard disk and delete the recovery hd again.

Mar 23, 2010I have a MacBook which has recently been shutting down when it feels like :/ this all started a week or two ago (well not the shut downs but other issues that I'll get too), basically the fan I think has been knocked as it is bumping the top or something as the whirring is getting loud and it sounds like every now and again it hits something
Also CPU usage seems to be averaging out at 20% for Safari and 100% for HD Video where as it used to be very small amount for Safari and 30 - 40% for HD.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Screen Randomly Shutting Off?
Jun 17, 2012So frustrated with this situation. It appears this is only happening since upgrading to Lion so that's why I've chose to post it in this forum. My screen has been shutting off randomly. And I've only been able to get it to happen when I use gestures on the trackpad. (I.E.: "App Expose, "Show desktop" or "Show all windows.) I say my screen because the HD is still spinning, the keyboard backlights are still on and the status light is still lit. I can't do anything but hard shutdown. I've tried adjusting the brightness, clicking, keyboard commands (force quit) and nothing does anything. I've been sending the crash report to Apple but I feel like that is pointless so I'm turning to the forum for a possible answer. I've inluded my specs below as well as a copy of the log that got sent to apple (in blue). I don't know if it will say anything to anyone but it's worth a shot. I don't think it's a screen cable issue cause I'm not moving or adjusting the screen when this is happening.

Apr 14, 2012I have been shutting down my MacBook Pro OS X10.7.3 at night.I just read that OSX runs "maintenance" procedures early in the morning (between 3:15 am and 5:30 am) and that if Mac is powered off at that time, that these maintenance procedures will NOT run.True or False? AppleCare says that it won't make any difference and I won't be affected if these night procedures never run. But, if that's true, then why are they set up to run at night? ? I went to the Apple Manual but it does not address my question.

Oct 7, 2009I've just upgraded to 10.6.1 from leopard. Whilst on leopard I had no problems at all with my Macbook Pro (Early 2008, 2.5Ghz) and for the most part snow leopard seems to work pretty well. However I'm having some issues with sleep. To start with my computer wouldn't even shut down properly after installing snow leopard; it would shut down for 3-4 seconds and then restart of it's own accord.
I've tried a few solutions that I've seen in forums for people with similar problems (such as reset PRAM, SMC, repairing permissions and deleting certain PLIST files) and now my mac will properly shut down, but still not sleep correctly. Now my mac will only sleep if it is on battery power and I activate sleep by closing the lid, if I activate it in the menu or if the power cord is connected (by any method of activating sleep) then my mac will sleep then 3 seconds later turn back on. As far as I'm aware I've got no programs that are causing this and I have turned all network and bluetooth 'wake' demands off. I also have nothing connected to my mac.

Jan 1, 2010New owner of iMac 24" 2.8 since last March. Just recently I have noticed that when I take off for a few days, I shutdown the iMac and when I return home a few days later and hit the power button the iMac is already on in sleep mode. The only change I have made recently was to add Time Machine on a Guardian Maximus 1TB raid drive, but I usually power off that drive when I leave. I've checked and searched here and in the Apple discussions with no luck. Does anyone have any idea what might be happening?
