Mac Mini :: Keeps Shutting Itself Down?

Jun 20, 2012

When I woke up this morning, I went to use my new Mac Mini. For some reason, it will appear on the monitor for about five seconds, and then nothing will show on the monitor at all. Attempting to restart the Mac Mini only finds it doing the same thing.

Mac Mini :: Mini Keeps Shutting Down When In Sleep Mode!!

Aug 5, 2009

So this past week when my mini hasn't stayed in sleep mode, it shuts itself down about a minute later after being in sleep mode. I haven't changed any of my settings in a year and a half, normally it would stay in sleep mode until i come back to it and logged on again. When it does shut down i just cannot power back on i have to unplug the adapter then replug it in for it to start up again. I've searched google and on here for possible ideas. I wouldn't think it to be overheating since I'm not running any applications when i put it in sleep. It might be the power supply since i have to do that process to get it to work again. Let me know what could be causing this or ways to troubleshoot this problem.

Mac Mini :: System Overheating And Shutting Down

Jan 14, 2010

I've googled to see if I can find a solution to this but not had any luck - wonder if you could help. My Mac Mini is 1.5Ghz PowerPc G4, 512Mb RAM, running Mac OS X Version 10.5.8. I bought it second hand a couple of years ago and in the past while it's really been playing up a bit. It first started overheating and shutting down when I was doing really resource intensive stuff - for example, opening a large amount of RAW image files. However, it's now started taking to shutting down when I'm doing normal browsing, using Spotify etc The machine also tends to hang a lot, and I can't really stream videos very well either. The vents at the back of the Mac definitely aren't blocked and there's plenty of space around the machine to let the air circulate.

Mac Mini :: Sleep Results In Shutting Off

May 13, 2012

When I choose sleep from the Apple menu my Mac Mini with 10.7.4 just shuts off without sleeping. Choosing shut-off however results in an ongoing gray screen with a rotating sign (not the beachball), until I press the on/off switch for about 10 seconds.

Resetting the SMC does not help. Programs like DiskWarrior, Apple hardware test do not find any problems.

MacBook :: Shutting Down Randomly - How To Prevent From Shutting Down

Mar 23, 2010

I have a MacBook which has recently been shutting down when it feels like :/ this all started a week or two ago (well not the shut downs but other issues that I'll get too), basically the fan I think has been knocked as it is bumping the top or something as the whirring is getting loud and it sounds like every now and again it hits something

Also CPU usage seems to be averaging out at 20% for Safari and 100% for HD Video where as it used to be very small amount for Safari and 30 - 40% for HD.

Mac Mini :: Unable To Get Dual Displays / Using Mini DVI And Mini DisplayPorts

Sep 12, 2010

I have an Early 2009 Mac Mini with Mini DVI and Mini DisplayPort. And I have two 1080p HDTVs. The Mac Mini is capable of dual display, and I've gotten it to work before, so the issue is not the TV or Mac. And I have tried both Mirroring and No Mirroring.

I got a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI Adapter (#5311) and a Mini-DVI to HDMI Adapter (#4852) both from MonoPrice. And for some reason I can't get the Mac Mini to dual display, it's only one or the other.

Before I had a Mini Displayport Male and USB Male AUDIO to HDMI Female Converting Adapter (#5969) and I got video on both HDTVs, but not audio at the same time b/c one was USB and one was TOSLINK.

I'm not sure why I can't get video on both monitors. Any help?

Mac Mini :: How To Conncet HDTV Using Mini Display Port Or Mini Dvi?

Apr 6, 2009

I need to connect my 09' Mac Mini to my Yamaha RX-V2700 receiver which outputs to my Sony XBR HDTV. I know the mini has both mini-dvi to dvi and mini-dp to dvi or hdmi available via adapters. I was thinking to go with option 1 however I was wondering what is your opinions? Is mini-display port better over mini-dvi or are they the same? Audio will be carried over optical toslink.

Option 1:
Using mini-dvi adapter to dvi: Connect Dvi-Hdmi cable to receiver and output audio with toslink adapter.

Option 2:
Using mini-dp adapter to dvi or hdmi: Connect Dvi-Hdmi cable to receiver and output audio with toslink adapter.

MacBook Pro :: How To Keep MBP From Shutting Down

Aug 30, 2010

I use Daylite and Daylite Server on my MBP connected to the net and sync my iPad running Daylite Touch through my 3G connection. It works great while I have my MBP running. I want to set up my MBP so that it will run without shutting down (screen blanked out). I just want to do this for a few days to see how it works out. If I like it I will get a Mac Mini to run as the server instead of the MBP.

The problem I am having is that no matter how I adjust the settings on the MBP, after awhile it shuts down Daylite and Daylite Server. Daylite Server shuts down and puts out an error message and everything just hangs there. I figure I must be doing something wrong in the settings but don't know what. I tried searching the forums, google, apple support, etc. but haven't found anything - of course I am probably searching all those wrong too.

OS X :: Mac Keeps Shutting Down While Playing WoW?

Dec 23, 2008

About 10-15mins after starting a WoW session in 10.5.6 on a Mac Pro, the screen goes into powersave mode, and cannot be returned. This is leaving me with no alternative but to hard reboot!

I can hear the fans going mad as I'm playing, so wonder if it's a heat issue. If so, what to do about it?

Can anyone suggest:

a) How to break out of screen power save without hard rebooting?

b) What the issue may be and how to investigate/resolve it?

OS X :: Mac 10.5.6 Shutting Down Spontaneously?

Feb 13, 2009

My mac os x 10.5.6, (2.8 Ghz Intel Core Duo, 2GB 800MHz DDR2 SDRAM) keeps shutting itself down spontaneously - no error message occurs before or after it shuts down, and when i press the power button on my mac i get no response.

I have to turn it off at the power point and turn it on again.

I have a power surge board and only my mac is plugged into it so i'm pretty sure it's not a surge problem.

It seems to mainly happen when the screen saver comes on, and i have checked all of my system preferences and i havn't selected to turn off hard disk's at any time etc. I have no idea why it's doing any of this!

MacBook :: It Is Shutting Off Out Of No Where

Apr 9, 2012

After I bought it, I noticed that the fan was making loud noises when I used it too long. I know it is normal for it to overheat after a long period of use but it doesn't just overheat, the fan starts making a weird grinding noise. I thought that it was just dirty and it wasn't affecting the way my computer was running, so I just ignored it.

It has been almost a year now since I first bought it used and the fan has gotten a lot quieter, but just starting last week I was watching a movie on Netflix and right in the middle of my movie, the computer just randomly shut off. I figured it was overheating. But, even after it had cooled down, I went back to watching my movie and within 10-15 minutes, it did it again!

Intel Mac :: Why Is It Shutting Down By Itself

Just to be clear, it shuts down and does not restart automatically. I never have the screen brightness higher than half so I don't believe I am overheating it? I have looked for teh Flashback Trojan and appear to be clean. If i boot the box in safe mode when booted in safe mode all seems okay. I have also recently reset the PRAM and have had the machine up for a few minutes and it has not shut down yet.

Windows On Mac :: Safe To Keep Shutting Down?

Sep 21, 2010

Having successfully installed Windows XP via Boot Camp on my new iMac and with everything up & running I am wondering what is really best for my iMac? From what I understand, when using OSX, you should never keep shutting it down all the time (unless you're going to be away from it for a while). It's best to put your Mac to sleep each night and restart the machine once a week. So what about Windows?

Having used a PC all my life, I'm very used to just shutting the computer down everytime when I have finished what I've needed to do and booting it back up when required. I'm going to be using Windows extensively for the next year on the Mac, so should I put it on Stand-by or Hibernate each time I'm finished? Or is it safe to keep shutting it down? (Note: I have the SSD + HDD option installed. I assume if I keep shutting it down, the performance of the SSD will degrade far quicker?)

PowerPC :: IBook G4 Keeps Shutting Down?

Nov 22, 2010

I had my iBook G4 a few years ago, and since I was about eleven when I had it, I'm not sure I always took the best care of it, but it's always worked pretty much fine up until about a week ago. It's started shutting down randomly. It also sometimes randomly goes to sleep in the middle of things. In particular, it doesn't seem to like starting up, or the internet, especially if I'm on youtube. I've tried a PMU reset, as it worked once before when my laptop wouldn't start up, but it hasn't worked properly. It's worked from anywhere from a minute from the time I start up again, to about a day or two at most, but it always seems to shut down again.

I really don't know what else to do with it... and I don't understand how computers work at all.

PowerPC :: Mac G5 Shutting Down - Overheating?

Nov 27, 2010

I've got an early 2005 model Power Mac G5. Bought it from a hospital and it's really clean inside. Lately it's been shutting down spontaneously without warning. I thought it might be an issue with overheating, but I'm not that familiar with normal heat levels for a CPU. I installed iStat nano and checked the temperatures. I took a screen shot of the widget. Temperatures are in Fahrenheit. Can anyone tell me if I'm on the right track? What do I need to do to solve this problem?

OS X :: New IMac 20" Not Shutting Down

Feb 4, 2009

I've learned quite a bit from this site in recent weeks as I found it following my purchase of a 20" iMac (2.66 GHz) a month ago. I've got a question for the group and I'm quite certain it's a stupid one so please be gentle. As I do every night, last night I put my iMac to sleep at around 11:15 pm before going to bed. Upon awaking this morning I couldn't get it to wake up. Hitting keys on the keyboard didn't do it, nor did moving the mouse around. I'm not sure if this is important but both my keyboard and mouse are wireless. Power to the other things on my desk was still on so it wasn't a power problem.

Anyway, I hit the power button on the back to see if it had simply shut itself off and nothing happened. I hit it again. still nothing. Finally, hitting it a third time did the trick and the computer roared to life and came on normally. It had never done this before. It had always immediately awakened in the morning upon hitting a button on the keyboard. First, is this common for an iMac to shut itself down? Second, why would the power button be unresponsive? Finally, if the machine had actually not been off (which I doubt very seriously) did I do a big "no no" by hitting the power button to turn it off/on?

(I have a desktop imac (intel core duo 2.66).)

1 The machine often refuses to shut down (or restart) and I get that black veil slide down the screen following the "you need to restart your computer..." message
2. The machine refuses to shut down and just stays on the desktop image with the black spinning wheel spinning endlessly.
3. I'm getting problems with applications refusing to quit (even when using opt-cmd-escape) . even when the computer "acknowledges" that the ap has quit, the icon is still active in the dock underneath.
