I indadvertently hit some keyboard combo that caused my otherwise hidden-by-default dock to remain permanently visible. Worse, the "hide dock" option is now gone from my system preferences. how to make the preference check box reappear?Â

I found my dock is gone. When I moved my pointer over the edge of screen where the dock was, the dock does not show up. I went to the Dock preference, it seems that the option "Automatically hidd and show the Dock" is chosen. I turned it off. It shows no difference. And I went to the Dock preference again, the Option is still chosen. And the Mac->Dock-> Turn Hiding Off is not functional. And also the hot key combination. Now I have to went to the lunchpad to see my dock and all my applications. It is really annoying.

I wonder if it is possible to hide the Dock completely. If you go to Dock settings and hide it, it will appear when the cursor near its edge. What I want, is to hide it completely - dont want it to appear all of a sudden and interrupt me. I found the app Dock Gone, which hides the Dock and makes it accessible via a keyboard-shortcut. Thing is, it costs $14.95, and I just want the dock to disappear.
Is there a way to do this? A terminal command or something? I guess there must be - Dock Gone is doing it somehow.
I don't want some applications to show their dock icon when they're running. Preview is an example. I've used the freeware app "Configure Dock Application Tile", but it always gives me an error saying I don't have permission. Is there another app that can do this?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI like to autohide the dock but it reappears too slowly, is it possible to start the reappear effect before I touch the edge of the screen, say 1 inch in advance. Or just have the animation be faster?
View 22 Replies View RelatedI have my last.fm scrobbler hidden from the dock. I recently changed my password on my last.fm account and need to do so on the scrobbler, but I can't figure out how to do it. When I launch the app from the apps folder, the program runs but I don't have the menu items across the top and thus can't find the "Preferences" menu item.
Is there a way I can unhide it so that I can access the "Preferences"? Is there another way to access the "Preferences"?
I like to automatically hide the dock, because it gives me more space on the screen. Sadly, I can't see mail and Adium notifications when the dock is hidden.
View 7 Replies View RelatedIs there a way to only hide the menu bar, but keep the dock unhidden? I tried Menu Magic, but it hides both. Menu Eclipse can a put a black bar on top of it, but you can't maximize windows to fill up the space it takes up.
Basically I want a "Turn Hiding On" feature for the menu bar.
To the point... I use TimeOut to remind me to get up and move, while I am on my computer. It is a handy app that will make the screen go blank for how ever long I set my breaks to last.
The thing is... I don't need the application icon to sit in my Dock taking up space telling me the application is open. I know it is open since it tells me to get up and stretch every 20 minutes by blanking my screen.
So, is there any way to take the application's icon off the Dock while still leaving it open?
So I'm trying to find a way to hide the SpaceSuit icon in the doc while it's still running. The main reason is that I use the command+W to close my applications and sometimes SpaceSuit gets closed accidentally in the process. I added:
<key>LSUIElement</key>
<string>0</string>
right above
</dict>
and tried dockless, but I've came up short.
Is it possible to tweak the minimize to the dock to auto hide the window instead?

The dock has a quick key combo to show and hide. When it's in hide mode and my mouse hovers below (were it is located) it re-appears. How can I make it to only show and hide with my quick key combo?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI want to let my wife use my Macbook Pro until I can get her her own. But I have a lot of apps installed that she would never use and I want to make it as user friendly as possible. Â
So is there a way to hide apps on a per user basis to make it as easy as possible for her.Â

In Snow Leaopard if I check the box against apps to Hide them whem logging in it worked fine... I login and the apps are running but not open (dot underneath). After upgrading to Lion this setting is ignored. Everytime I restart all the apps I chose to Hide open their windows and I have to manually click the red cross to hide them. Â
For info, I have my computer do a scheduled restart every morning before I get to work. So I assume the checkbox to reopen windows when you login back in is checked as no one is there to uncheck it. BUT this should not be related, as the apps are marked to be hidden. Â

I recently installed an application to my macbook pro. However when I installed it the uninstaller also shows in the launchpad. It is so unattractive and I was wondering how to get rid of it? Everytime I open lanchpad I see it. Dragging to the trash does not work, it only works if I want to uninstall it.

Is there a way to disable the option to hide the finder? As it is the core of OS X i see no real need to hide it.

I have set up Lion Server and so far it is doing everything that I want it to do. I have sucessfully connected to the Lion server from my iPad using webDAV. I can see the sharepoints that I have created just fine. What I want to do is hide home folders when connecting to Lion from the iPad. I know I can skip seeing the home folders by typing in the sharepoint name directly but I want users to access several different sharepoints when they hit the server.

My last enquiry was with regards backing up Time Machine to an AirDisk connected to an AirPort Extreme Base Station, but this is not a recommended solution. Now that I have been able to afford a new HDD that works with my iMac, this is my current setup, which I established using the excellent website by Pondini:Â
- HDD connected via USB to iMacÂ
- iMac backs up to its OWN PARTITION on the USB HDDÂ
- Several Portable Macs back up to the other partition on the USB HDD using sparse bundles via WiFi (drive shared by iMac)Â
Now on my iMac, I have both partitions appearing on my desktop. However these partitions are SOLELY for TM backups and I don't want them to appear on the desktop (mainly due to other users perhaps fiddling around with them).Â
I know that I can use Finder to hide all connected drives from the Desktop, but I DO want USB drives that I connect to actually appear on the desktop. How can I hide ONLY the TM partitions (specifically) from the Desktop??Â
I have found something which suggests that I can use the chflags command in order to hide specific HDDs/partitions, but will this have any effect on Time Machine backing up LOCALLY and also via NETWORK? I was reluctant to "hide" these drives without checking first whether it would cause any problems for Time Machine backups.Â

This past weekend I transferred my OS and apps to a newly installed SSD drive.
During the process I had to move some files around in order to get The OS and Apps on the SSD.
I used a technique that utilizes the Terminal and the chflags command.
My issue is now I can not hide the files and folders that are usually hidden.
I can't remember the exact method I used to unhide hidden folders and files. I can't even find a reference to it in my web browsers history.I have searched on the web for solutions along these lines:Â defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles -boolean FALSE ; killall Finderchflags hidden sudo chflags hiddenÂ
But none of these approaches have worked. I have downloaded Onyx, TinkerTool and Show Hide Invisible Files.
I have used them as best I understand to hide the normally hidden files and folders, but nothing has worked.

I have the new MBP with Retina and Lion 10.7.4. I tried loading in safe mode with same problem. I don't use parallels or anything similar either.Â
For the update from 10.6.8 to 10.7.3 the dock settings - neither startup options, nor programm icons are kept for restart.Â
I've tried delete prefs: dock.db; dock.plist; finder.plist Â
My wife removed the Applications and Downloads folders from her dock. Can I simply drag these folders from Finder to the dock to restore them to the dock? If so, will they stay on the dock? On my iMac I do not see an option, "Keep on the Dock". for folders
