I've seen several post about this issue, which was caused by either VMware or changing the desktop background. However, neither is the problem for me. I have the default background and I don't even have VMware installed. Here is a screenshot of my active programs:'Â
I have the new MBP with Retina and Lion 10.7.4. I tried loading in safe mode with same problem. I don't use parallels or anything similar either.Â
My wife removed the Applications and Downloads folders from her dock. Can I simply drag these folders from Finder to the dock to restore them to the dock? If so, will they stay on the dock? On my iMac I do not see an option, "Keep on the Dock". for folders

recently i have restarted my 2009 24" iMac with OS X 10.7.4 to find that the wallpapers flash on and off and there is no dock. i have tried deleting the caches, and have repaired disk permissions, to no avail. short of a fresh reinstall?
Info: iMac, Mac OS X (10.7.4), i have an additional monitor attach
How do I remove icons for applications from the Lion dock? I have a new iMac and can't use the normal drag and remove "poof" or add by dragging from applications folder.
I suddenly have a problem where I can't add or remove programs from the dock. When I try to drag a program icon to the dock it won't stick to it and shows a "+" next to it in green. When I try to drag an icon off the dock it shows a shadow of the icon that won't go away. I tried making a new user and the same behavior occurs in that user. I tried finding my com.apple.dock.plist but couldn't locate it. I was able to find com.apple.dockfixup.plist and tried deleting.
When I started my Mac today the icon from the Finder in the Dock was away.Â
What have I done yet? Repaired the disk persmissions.Deleted the .plist file from the Dock and restarted it. What can I else do? All users on the computer have the same problem.
Need to know if it is possible to remove the dock so that my little children don't get on it and start pressing all icons possible? I have the track pad so I can just use the launchpad to access anything that I need.
My download folder used to be in my dock. I have opened it in finder, dragged to desktop, but still can not drag it to my dock. Not sure why it disappeared from the dock and cant get it back.
Whenever I try to open a Folder from the Dock using the "Open In Finder" command the folder window does not show up but instead the Preview app starts up and scans the selected folder,i.e., Applications, for any files it recognises.Â
I have repaired the permissions but it makes no difference. I have removed all folder icons from the dock and replaced them but to no avail. I have deleted the dock preferences files in my Home folder & restarted but the problem remains. Â

I am a recent Mac convert and I just set up user profiles on my Mac Mini for my two kids. My son plays Pirates of the Caribbean online. I installed it on the Mac and when I opened the applications folder and tried to drag the icon into the doc it wouldn't drag and I got an error message saying I couldn't launch the application from there. I wasn't trying to start it from there, only drag it. There was no problem performing the same task with Safari. I also had no problem dragging the icon to the dock under my user profile (admin.)
The dock and toolbar at the top have disappeared from the screen. They re-appear when I click in the area where they should be but disappear once again whenever I click elsewhere. I have also lost the ability to minimize open windows. I can resize them manually, maximize and exit them I just cannot minimize them! (The orange button has gone grey.)
I have checked that I am not in fullscreen mode and I have unchecked all the automatic hide settings in the system preferences. This is only occuring when I'm using Mozilla Firefox.
I have a feeling that I accidentally clicked a button or unwittingly used a keyboard command to enter this setting, but I can't remember what I pressed!Â
I was able to cast a spotlight on an app in my dock, and then the rest of the screen became dim. For example, my Pages app was once open; after I clicked on it, along with pressing some other key (I assume), the Pages icon had a "light" shine on it in the dock, and the open window for the app moved to the center of the screen as the desktop darkened. It somewhat resembles what happens in Mission control. After having not seen that feature in many months, it happened again a little while ago by accident, but with a different app. What is this feature called? And what keyboard shortcuts are necessary to make it happen?Â
I got a new MacBook Pro 15" retina display, migrated my data from my old mac, and now the Dock application is consuming a ton of CPU on the system. I have found many other threads in these forums, many of them quite old. They typically suggest a problem with VMWare fusion or Parallels, neither of which I have on my system. They also suggest removing the com.apple.dock.plist file and killing the application, which did not help, nor did removing all applications from the dock and quitting all other applications.Â

I've been trying to change my docks theme for the past few days but have been unable. I've used Candybar, Dock Library etc. and none of them seem to work. I'm really annoyed because it used to work for me. Any suggestions on how I can remedy this problem?
I have just updated to OS X10.7.3 and now each time I start up the following apps have been added to the Dock:Â
Mission Control App Store Face TimeÂ
I don't want them in the Dock and have to delete them every time I start or restart my iMac. I have checked in Prefs and they are not listed under startup so I am at a loss as how to stop them auto loading onto the Dock.Â
I indadvertently hit some keyboard combo that caused my otherwise hidden-by-default dock to remain permanently visible. Worse, the "hide dock" option is now gone from my system preferences. how to make the preference check box reappear?Â
Is there a way to have certain apps only showing up on the dock in defined spaces? i.e. Calendar is only showing on the dock when you switch to space 2. So it does NOT show in the dock of space 1.
