OS X Mountain Lion :: Can't Hide Folders And Files That Are Usually Hidden

Sep 8, 2014

This past weekend I transferred my OS and apps to a newly installed SSD drive.

During the process I had to move some files around in order to get The OS and Apps on the SSD.

I used a technique that utilizes the Terminal and the chflags command.

My issue is now I can not hide the files and folders that are usually hidden.

I can't remember the exact method I used to unhide hidden folders and files. I can't even find a reference to it in my web browsers history.I have searched on the web for solutions along these lines: defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles -boolean FALSE ; killall Finderchflags hidden sudo chflags hidden

But none of these approaches have worked. I have downloaded Onyx, TinkerTool and Show Hide Invisible Files.

I have used them as best I understand to hide the normally hidden files and folders, but nothing has worked.

OS X :: How To Hide Hidden Files

Aug 2, 2010

I was messing around in the Terminal and accessed root [sudo -s]

I assumed root access would end upon closing the terminal, but I guess not.

I can see all my hidden files (e.g., mach_kernal). How do I disable root and get back to not being able to see my hidden files?

I've learned my lesson - never mess around with things you don't understand.

OS X :: How To Hide Invisible Files On Leopard 10.5.7

Jun 25, 2009

On Leopard 10.5.7, I had to unhide my invisible files for some job using the command:
#defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles YES
#killall Finder

I am trying the reverse commands but the Finder still shows files what are supposed to be hidden.I tried:
defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles -bool false
defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles NO
followed by a killall Finder and even reboot.

I would like to avoid a re-install. Who can confirm a working solution as some in this forum suggest that the above reverse commands are no longer effective on Leopard?

Applications :: ITunes Duplicated Video Files And Hide Them

May 15, 2009

I tunes imported vid files that I had on my hd last year, now, I decided that I didn't want these in ITunes, so I deleted them from ITunes. I then burned all of these files to a DVD and then deleted them from my downloads folder where they were always kept. Today I noticed that deep within ITunes, there is a folder called ITunes music and in that folder there is a sub folder called movies, where I discovered duplicates of the vid files I had previously deleted from my downloads folder which were imported by ITunes last year. I didn't know this could happen in ITunes!

OS X :: How To Hide Files That Are Located Besides User/Username... In Terminal

Jul 13, 2009

I've been wondering, if there is a way to hide files that are not located in "User/Username/...." in Terminal?

The command I use to hide the files for example is: chflag hidden ~/Desktop/*

However, if I the file/folder I want to hide is not in 'User/Username..." I will not be able to hide it... So how do you change it so that you can hide the folders that are not located in "User/Username"?

Also, I've ran into a problem!

My "Username" that one that has an house icon is missing when I access it from Machintosh HD --> Users Folder.

I guessed that it was hidden somehow but not too long ago it was in the User folder... So I typed in "defaults write com.apple.finder ShowAllFiles True" and I found a bunch of weird files on my Desktop and my Machintosh HD... and I found the Username house icon... I do not know what I did in terminal that hid it.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Hide Items When Login Is Not Working

Mar 13, 2012

In Snow Leaopard if I check the box against apps to Hide them whem logging in it worked fine... I login and the apps are running but not open (dot underneath). After upgrading to Lion this setting is ignored. Everytime I restart all the apps I chose to Hide open their windows and I have to manually click the red cross to hide them.

For info, I have my computer do a scheduled restart every morning before I get to work. So I assume the checkbox to reopen windows when you login back in is checked as no one is there to uncheck it. BUT this should not be related, as the apps are marked to be hidden.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Hide Time Machine Volumes From Desktop

May 7, 2012

My last enquiry was with regards backing up Time Machine to an AirDisk connected to an AirPort Extreme Base Station, but this is not a recommended solution. Now that I have been able to afford a new HDD that works with my iMac, this is my current setup, which I established using the excellent website by Pondini:

- HDD connected via USB to iMac

- iMac backs up to its OWN PARTITION on the USB HDD

- Several Portable Macs back up to the other partition on the USB HDD using sparse bundles via WiFi (drive shared by iMac)

Now on my iMac, I have both partitions appearing on my desktop. However these partitions are SOLELY for TM backups and I don't want them to appear on the desktop (mainly due to other users perhaps fiddling around with them).

I know that I can use Finder to hide all connected drives from the Desktop, but I DO want USB drives that I connect to actually appear on the desktop. How can I hide ONLY the TM partitions (specifically) from the Desktop??

I have found something which suggests that I can use the chflags command in order to hide specific HDDs/partitions, but will this have any effect on Time Machine backing up LOCALLY and also via NETWORK? I was reluctant to "hide" these drives without checking first whether it would cause any problems for Time Machine backups.

After upgrade I returned to the app store to download ibooks author.  I can find ibooks author but when I try and install the app I have to sign in and I get a "connection failed" error message.

The same happens in iTunes when I try and view my account - "The network connection failed"

I can access the internet with no problems - including secure sites. I can access software update with no problems.

I have made no changes to my network settings - could sign in and download apps before upgrade, unable to after upgrade.
