Mac Pro :: Hard Drive Just Disappeared - How To Fix It
Oct 29, 2010I was working on a file in photoshop, when it told me:
"Could not complete, scratch disk is missing"
So I went and checked, and one of my harddrives is completely missing from the finder.
I went to Disk utility, thinking it accidentally got unmounted or something, but the harddrive is missing from there too!

Sep 21, 2010I am trying to use my hard drive I have had for a couple years to back up some files on my computer, but the data I had stored on there already has disappeared. I previously had the hard drive connected to the Time Machine application, but have not used it in over a year when I received an error message trying to backup my computer using that application.
I know the data I already had on there is still on the hard drive because nearly half of the space on the drive is used up, but when I plug the hard drive in to my computer and open it there are no files to be found. I want to back up the current files on my computer, but I don't want to risk losing what I already had on the hard drive, so is there any way I can find and access the old files again?
I'll include my hardware information on here in case that helps to find a solution:

Aug 25, 2008Been using my MBA for 3 months now and noticed that I have lost a large amount of hard drive space, I currently have 40GB free when I have hardly anything on the computer, I have a few freeware apps and about 8GB of Music, thats it, I have looked at where the space has gone but can't figure it out. Is there any such tools for removing stuff that is not used and to do a "Spring Clean" to get rid of anything I don't need?

Mar 26, 2010After deleting windows 7, I went back into boot camp to merge partitions and after that operation completed, the 32gb of space that was used for the partition was gone. I tried using the disk utility to find second partition but can't, it only recognizes the partition that mac osx is on and says it is 120gb capacity when hard drive is 150 gb. I would like to format the entire hard drive and have it as one partition again

Jun 8, 2012I want to potentially upgrade my hard drive from the measly 160GB to something with more space, more current, and hopefully faster. I've been doing my homework, and the only thing that scares me is the OS. I don't want to clone my harddrive as I would love to start new. I have back ups, so anything important can be transferred, but I would really like a clean slate. That would mean installing the OS from scratch. Can I use the boot disc I made with the Lion installer to install Lion on the new drive directly? I bought my MacBook Pro with Leopard installed, and later that summer installed Snow Leopard, then last summer upgraded to Lion. I don't have the Snow Leopard discs anymore, but I wouldn't want to install each after the other.How do I go about installing that? If I have a brand new drive, there theoretically won't be anything on it, so when I get that in and turn on the computer, what will happen? Will it tell me to do something?

Sep 30, 2009Skype, Adium, IPhoto, Photobooth and preview have all just disappeared from my hard disk. I suspect someone might have been on my computer without me knowing but it seems unlikely they would've accidentally deleted all of that. Is there anyway I can get preview,iphoto,photobooth back without the apple cds? I'm afraid I don't have them anymore. Is there also any way I can check some sort of log to see what might have happened...

The situation I'm in is pretty akward and it's quite a long story but I'll try my best to explain everything.This afternoon I went to a friend's house to transfer some data to my external hard drive (MyBook Studio).Since my HD is formatted as HFS+ and my mate owns a Windows PC, I'd asked him to install MacDrive.
When we plugged in my HD, Windows just didn't detect it. We tried all sorts of things, including rebooting.. but nothing seemed to help. No matter what we did. The damn thing just didn't detect my hard drive. Not even with MacDrive.
I desperately wanted to transfer some data to my HD since I'd drove quite a while to get there. So after a bit of Google research we decided to create a partition. My HD has a capacity of 1 TB and only about half of it was being used.So we went on and created a NTFS partition of 400 GB. Now Windows could detect the partition we'd just made.
Everything went fine, we could now transfer some data to my HD.Nevertheless.. when I got home and connected my HD to my Macbook Pro, Finder could only see the partition which we formatted as NTFS. The other 600 GB, which we hadn't touched.. is nowhere to be found.
There's quite a lot of important data on there so I would really appreciate it if anyone could help me.

Sep 6, 2009Today I went to plug in my Lacie 250 GB USB external hard drive into my 13 in. MacBook to get a shirt template for a design I am making. I discovered that the hard drive just would not mount and show on the desktop, and I remembered that this happened a few days before, but all I did was unplug it and plug it back in, and it worked... except that today, that didn't work at all. I tried the other USB port, and the hard drive showed up on the desktop for about a second, and then disappeared. I kept on replugging it back into both USB ports, but nothing happened.
Then I tried to see if it would work on the PC beside me, and it was recognized as an external device; however, a message came up telling me the drive was malfunctioning. I am guessing this is from ejecting it incorrectly (because I am in a hurry to head to my next classes...I use this laptop at school), but I have incorrectly disconnected it before in the past and this problem never happened to me before.
Every single project I have ever created for my design career is on that hard drive, and all I want now is to get my files back. All I need it to do is show up on the desktop for just the right amount of time for me to copy my files onto my computer.
I read online to put it into the freezer for a while and it should mount, but that didn't work. I tried using Disk Warrior, Data Rescue 3, and Tech Tool Deluxe, but the hard drive did not show up on any of those apps.I tried plugging the hard drive into an iMac as well, but it did not show up either.
MacBook Pro :: Audiable Click Sound Of Hard Drive / Protection Of The Hard Drive Dropped?
Sep 1, 2009Got a new MBP last month to replace my white MacBook - loving it as an upgrade but one gripe - if I'm sat using it on my knee I regularly hear the "click" type noise of what I imagine is the protection of the hard drive because it thinks it is being dropped.
I never heard this on my old Mac and while it's not a huge issue it is a bit disconcerting, as though I'm being told off for moving it in a fairly responsible way.

Sep 9, 2009My PowerBook G4 (Alum) died. I've had it for 4 years, taken it with me to Alaska and all over the lower 48, and have had nothing but happy experiences. I knew she was gonna go, but I was hoping she'd hold on until I could afford a MacBook. Alas, no. The problem appears to be the ability of the logic board to communicate with the hard drive. I can hear the HD spin, but even with Disk Warrior, I cannot locate it. The Mac Geniuses at my local Apple store confirmed this and gave me a shoulder to cry on. I've run Disk Warrior, Disk Utility, and tried finding it using the target disk mode - no luck.
The problem is that I've got 4 years of teaching materials, 6000 songs, and irreplaceable pictures on the HD, so I can't bring myself to just trash it. It's true that you only fail to back up you stuff once. This is my once. I've heard that with PC hard drives, you can just drop the old HD into a USB HD box and use it as an external HD. I can't afford professional data retrevial, and I want to give this option a try if it'll work with a Mac HD. Any ideas or suggestions?

Mac Pro :: Partitioned Drive-folders Disappeared
Apr 28, 2012A whole folder full of mixed video files disappeared.
I have three internal drives in my Mac Pro. I partitioned one into 2 volumes. On one of those volumes, I keep an older OS (10.4) along with some folders for holding video files I'm either working on or downloaded and keep for viewing. I don't know what happened but suddenly, all the files in those folders disappeared. Other folders on that volume are ok. This is not my boot drive. The missing files amount to 20 or 30 GBs. They are not in the trash. They seem to have simply disappeared. I ran disk utility to repair permissions; I booted from my install disk and repaired all; I tried making invisible files visible; I shut down and switched drive bays for the three internal drives. Still, the one drive in question, shows no signs of all the files I had on it.

Feb 25, 2012This is not as simple as the question implies, I had created a partition because of my account/hard drive/whatever screwing up (its a long story). In the end, I have a partition so that I have 2 half sized drives. But I deleted the old, damaged partition and now I just have my current one with half taken up by 'free space'. Here is a screenshot of what I'm presented with: [URL]. My issue is that I cant resize my hard drive partition even though there's loads of space. So my 500GB drive has a 250GB partition and then 250GB of free space that I cant use!

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Lost Hard Drive Space
Mar 19, 2012I previously had a Windows 7 Boot Camp partition of roughly 50GB on my 256GB MacBook Air. I removed this partition after Wind'ohs driving me crazy after a while. However, now my Mac partition is only 200GB, and I'm not able to increase its size. Also, my Recovery HD shows up in permanently in Finder and Disk Utility.I now need to (sadly...) reinstall Windows, but Boot Camp won't partition my drive, giving me the error: "The startup disk cannot be partitioned or restored to a single partition". What's going on with my partitions? The Recovery HD seems to be causing the problem, but I don't understand why I can't use the 50GB of space that is empty.

Mar 25, 2012I had a black screen of death moment and since then, I've had a few weird anomalies with my iMac. I ran disk repair while logged in, and it told me there was a problem. I restarted in restore mode, and when I repaired the drive, it found no problems. I don't believe it.Â
1. My external hard drives do not appear on the desktop. They are mounted, and I can see them when I open the finder and the disk utility, but they won't show up on the desktop like they used to. I have played with finder preferences shutting the option to see them off and on, but this doesn't change anything. Very strnage.Â
2. iTunes completely whacked out. It "restored" itself by magic. Now all the Date Added dates are March 23rd. All of my podcasts disappeared, and all my settings were reset. I have no idea what else I lost. I want to restore from a back up, but I don't know how to do just my iTunes.

Apr 11, 2012I would like to back up my Blu-Rays to a hard drive in some kind of .iso or similar format, potentially for viewing through a player such as VLC. They are all mine and bought legally, but I have a few Region A Blu-Rays in my collection (which is mostly Region B). My question thus has two points:Â
Is there a good program for ripping Blu-Rays into either an .iso --type format or some kind of Video.TS -type file structure?
Can anyone recommend a good external Blu-Ray drive for my Macbook, preferably that plays discs from all regions (or at least A and B)?Â

Mac Pro :: Installing Lion On A Partitioned Hard Drive?
Apr 11, 2012I am having trouble installing Lion on a partitioned hard drive I have three internal HD's  The first I am running the system on 10.6.8 (which is up to date) , the second I do most of my work on and the third I have partitioned into two and I am trying to install Lion on one of the patitions. But Lion has decided it will only go on the first HD. Above is the one I want to put it on, but it's not available and I can't change the partition scheme. None of the things the directions state are usable?

As Iwrite this I am watching my HD space decrease by about .01gb every 10 seconds. I Am in the process of using Time Machine to restore to a time before the upgrade. Well that didn,t work as it has just told me that there isn't,t enough space to copy my hd.Â

Apr 20, 2012I had a necessity to install from an encrypted Hard drive using the Lion USB Boot Drive. When I attempted to restore from the drive, I was unable to do so.
After finally completing a complete install of Lion, I was able to use Migration assistant. But I still had to reinstall and reconfigure several things necessary to my business.Â
Is this a shortcoming of a reconstruction process or is there something I should have done?
