MacBook Pro :: New Hard Drive; Leopard To Lion Or Directly To Lion?

Jun 8, 2012

I want to potentially upgrade my hard drive from the measly 160GB to something with more space, more current, and hopefully faster. I've been doing my homework, and the only thing that scares me is the OS. I don't want to clone my harddrive as I would love to start new. I have back ups, so anything important can be transferred, but I would really like a clean slate. That would mean installing the OS from scratch. Can I use the boot disc I made with the Lion installer to install Lion on the new drive directly? I bought my MacBook Pro with Leopard installed, and later that summer installed Snow Leopard, then last summer upgraded to Lion. I don't have the Snow Leopard discs anymore, but I wouldn't want to install each after the other. How do I go about installing that? If I have a brand new drive, there theoretically won't be anything on it, so when I get that in and turn on the computer, what will happen? Will it tell me to do something?

OS X V10.5 Leopard :: Upgrade Directly From 10.5.8 To Lion?

Feb 10, 2012

I am currently running 10.5.8 and want to upgrade to Lion.  Do I need to go through Snow Leopard first?  My iMac appears to have the correct spec to run Lion.

I recently split my hard drive using Boot Camp in order to also run Windows.  When I upgrade will this affect the Windows side of things?  Will I be able to upgrade to Windows 7?

Am I likely to get problems with software such as Sage 50 line 2011, MS Office for Mac, Rosetta Stone, Dreamweaver 8?

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Backing Up Two Macs To One Directly Attached USB Drive?

Jun 28, 2012

I have an iMac with a directly attached USB drive and a Mac PowerBook attached via WIFI to the same network.  I would like to have both devices back up to the shared drive via Time Machine.  To date I have been able to get this to work, in a limited fashion.  As soon as the iMac goes to sleep the PowerBook cannot see the drive and the backup fails.  I would think that since I have selected the power option on the iMac to wake up for network access that this should work.  This sounds like a simple requirement, I tryed to attach the USB drive to my Airport Extreme and we all know that that does not work.

OS X :: Installing Tiger Directly To External Hard Drive

Jan 29, 2010

For the moment I have my OS back up (10.3.9 )cloned to an ext FW HD. I have a 10.4 install or unpgrade disc (not sure which, nor if the disc is any good and would prefer not to risk screwing up my int.HD). Could I install Tiger directly to my ext.HD, thus being able to use the two systems depending on where I boot from. (if the install works?) Asking this because I'm not sure if I have enough free space on my Int HD (7GB) to do an Install and Archive, where as on my Ext HD I have about 11GB free space on the partition. Then if it all works could I CCC it back to my Int.HD?

MacBook Pro :: USB Hard Drive Is Not Recognized On It Running Lion

Mar 21, 2012

I have:

- Freecom ToughDrive Pro USB hard drive

- New MBP running Lion 10.7.3

When I plug the disk in an USB port in the MBP, the light that indicates operation starts blinking but very lighltly colored and the disk is not recognized by the computer. I have put data on it using iMac Snow Leopard. I have plugged the disk into a MBP running Snow Leopard and it works. I have also tried another Lion (older MBP) and it also works.

How come the disk is not mounted or shown in Disk Utility. Can it be a power issue?

I have noticed there a lot of similar posts in the forum and none has been satisfactorily solved. Is this a mayor Lion bug? If yes, how can I downgrade to Snow Leopard?

MacBook Pro :: OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5) USB External Hard Drive Not Showing Up

Aug 20, 2014

I have a Hitachi Touro USB 3.0 1TB external hard drive that has always worked on my Macbook. Formatted in FAT so it would work on both my PC and Mac. I can't remember exactly when it stopped working, but I think I had to reset my mac once as it stopped responding and the HDD was plugged in. After that it stopped showing up in Finder, but still appears in Disk Utility. It also shows up in Storage under "About This Mac".  I've tried resetting my computer, ran Apple Hardware Test, and have tested the hard drive on other computers and it works fine. Just doesn't show up in Finder on my mac!!

MacBook Pro :: OS X Lion Internet Recovery - Does Not Detect Hard Drive

Jun 24, 2014

I have a MacBook Pro running OSX 10.7.2 and it recently stopped booting. Got the gray screen with the folder that has the question mark on it. I have attempted to use Command + R to do a Internet Recovery of the system, but once I get to the Mac OS X Lion screen to select where i want to install OSX, there are no hard drives listed.

So I figure, the hard drive (Hitachi 500GB that came with the Mac) is damaged or not functioning correctly. This doesn't seem to be the case because I can hook it up to a notebook SATA hard drive enclosure, connect it to my other MBP and read all the contents of the drive! This was good news, as i was able to copy off all important data, etc.

Using Disc utility, the partitions check out, and the drive appears to be functioning OK.

Verify and Repair volume “Macintosh HD”

Checking file systemChecking Journaled HFS Plus volume.

Checking extents overflow file.

Checking catalog file.

Checking multi-linked files.

Checking catalog hierarchy.

Checking extended attributes file.

Checking volume bitmap.

Checking volume information.

The volume Macintosh HD appears to be OK.

Volume repair complete.Updating boot support partitions for the volume as required.

I have purchased a replacement hard drive and am waiting for it to arrive in the mail.

My question now is this:

Am I able to do some kind of time machine backup, make an image, or do some kind of target drive restore from this hard drive since it is accessible on my other computer?

I don't mind reloading the operating system on the original MBP, but would really like to avoid the process of setting up all the applications, settings, etc if this drive is in fact functional.

MacBook Pro :: Order To Upgrade To Lion After Putting In A Brand New Hard Drive In It?

Apr 9, 2012

I  have a 2008 macbook pro with brand new 500GB hard drive and 6GB new RAM.    My old hard drive is backed up on external drive, via time machine. When the shop put in the new hard drive (there was nothing wrong with old one, it was just stuffed to the brim), they loaded snow leopard from a disk, but I haven't put anything from the old drive back on yet....I haven't even configured my mail and am just reading mail  from ipad and phone these days.

Should I install Lion before I restore all the old backed-up stuff, or is it important to have anything, ( like maybe preferences)  already on the computer when I download Lion.  I want to be selective when restoring from time machine, because my old hard drive had a lot of ancient software and junk on it that had migrated from every computer we've ever owned, and that is many, many. So, I'm just stuck on the best way to proceed.  Also, should I install the latest update for 10.6.8 before I download Lion? I see today that some new updates have become available; java, security, safari, and apple software installer.
