Mac Pro :: Installing Lion On A Partitioned Hard Drive?
Apr 11, 2012
I am having trouble installing Lion on a partitioned hard drive I have three internal HD's The first I am running the system on 10.6.8 (which is up to date) , the second I do most of my work on and the third I have partitioned into two and I am trying to install Lion on one of the patitions. But Lion has decided it will only go on the first HD. Above is the one I want to put it on, but it's not available and I can't change the partition scheme. None of the things the directions state are usable?

I replaced a 1 TB external drive partiotioned in 2 with a 3 TB extrnal drive run/store my corbon copy cloner back up and time machine.
The 3 TB drive was successfully partitioned through the disk utility and both back ups are installed and the initial back up is complete.
My question is about the 1 TB drive. I want to completely erase all data from the drive in order to use it for a different use.
Using disk utility one of the partitions deleted without incident when following the same protocol the second partition produced error messages.
Volume erase failed
Volume Erase failed with the error:
Couldn’t unmount disk.
If I try to eject the disk
It says it will not eject becaus e a program may be using it...
The only program that utilized this partition is Carbon Copy Cloner which is not being utilized on the new 3TB drive.
I do not see where there is a option to have more than on disk chosen for this purpose so am unsure why the disk utility is seeing the old partion as still in use.

I partitioned my harddrive to put Windows XP on it. Then I decided I didn't want to put Windows XP on it. So I unpartitioned the harddrive using Disk Utility and my Mac shows that the hard drive is not partitioned, however, when I turn on my computer I have to hold down the "Option" button in order for me to choose to boot from the Macintosh HD. If I don't hold down the "Option" button a black screen shows up that says "Please enter a bootable disk" or something of that nature.

So I just partitioned my drive to install Windows and noticed that my hard drive is now making that "crunching" sound that some hard drives make. It started during my Windows installation, and it happens regularly in Windows.
I also briefly hear it while OSX is starting up, but it doesn't seem to happen much in OSX. I've launched a bunch of applications and it is still pretty much silent. Any ideas what could cause this? Could it be NTFS? I have several hard drives in my PC that don't make that sound. I am using a 17" MacBook Pro unibody with the regular 320gb 5400rpm drive that it comes with.

After a couple of years of lurking around, searching for myself, I finally come out and ask for some help. My questions are intertwined, and I am unsure how to break up what into what. I am lost; forgive me my ignorance. The Scenario: I just got a Mac Box Set, and want to install Leopard.1. A new 400GB Passport. Existing 350GB--relatively new, getting a little glitchy. Only has copies of pix/video data on it.2. One MacMini, one Macbook Pro.3. Would like to backup bootable volumes for both macs.

1. Can I setup the external hard drive to be partitioned so I can keep photos on one partition and the backup on another? How?
2. Can I hook an external hard drive up to a wireless router and have wireless backups done. It is a Linksys router and has a USB port on the back. Can I? How?
3. If I were to hook up the external hard drive to the router (if possible), can Windows and Mac both view it and access and write files on there.

I partitioned my hard drive to in order to have an option of running tiger or leopard and thought that the partition would wipe my hard drive clean and was acceptant of this; however, I recently noticed that my disk space is running dangerously low and have discovered that all the crap I had on my hard drive before is still lingering in the depths of my hard drive. Anyways, is there any way I could just completely wipe my hard drive because I have a complete mess of duplicate files and songs that I don't want to even bother sorting through.

I think my problem started after partitioned my MacBook's hard drive. The thing is that when i click some apps (Skype, VLC etc.) they show up in the dock, but they just keep on bouncing, and when they stop bouncing after a minute it says "Application is not responding".

I am trying to create a bootable copy of my mac and would like to include the windows XP partition as well. I am planning to install this copy onto multiple CPU's after I have created it on the external HD. Is there a way to copy both partitions onto the external and what should the formatting look like.

Macbook Pro 17" Early 2011
Notes. Failed HDD ASD Test. A new hard drive was installed in September of 2011 after the previous hard drive failed. Having worked well until now the system seems to give the same problems as it had previously. I am wondering if this is a compatibility issue as others have pointed out.
I have been told by the technician my only option is to replace the entire hard drive again for the second time with a new one. However to my understanding a ASD test is very specific and this my not be necessary? Further I am attempting a final backup just in case. I don't have to take it in where I could just back it up myself without the system shutting down.

I am still just a little confused about installing OS X onto the second (new) hard drive.
Questions:
1. Is it necessary to install an operating system? What are the advantages of doing so? Can I use it without installing?
2. If I do install, do I have to buy another version of OS X or can I use the same one I installed on my first hard drive?

I have the disk image for Leopard on my external hard drive. I put it on there from my Powerbook. I tried to reinstall Leopard onto a Macbook but it wouldn't let me because I had to do a GUID partition on the external hard drive. I did that, put the DMG back onto the external drive and went to install it. I went to Startup Disk under System Prefences but my hard drive isn't showing up.

My hard drive recently died on my aluminum 15" g4 powerbook, 1.5ghz. I decided to replace it myself, it seemed like an easy enough task; simple pull and plug. The installation of the hardware was simple a 7200 rpm hitachi ata 100gb; compatible from what I read on [URL]
I Basically need to know how to get an OS on a Brand NEW Hard Drive. My specific problem is below:
When I turn on my machine, I get a small folder in the middle of the grey screen that flashes between having a "?" icon and the finder "Face" icon. I figured I need to install from the mac os x CD.
I don't have the Panther CD that came w/ my comp so I borrowed the tiger CD from my sister who just got a MacBook. With the disk 1 of 2 in my computer it loads to a screen with a large power button icon and a notice to restart the machine in 4/5 different languages. Overlayed on this screen is a code script with little english but some understandable stuff saying I don't have the right driver(s), that it is "hanging in", "Panic".
Can I only load Panther on it? I read something about some installers using 4 discs?
PS: despite my profile I don't have any OS on the hard drive right now.

so my boss' ibook g3 just broke, he brought it to apple and they said it needs a new hard drive and were going to charge him something like 400 dollars to replace it. He decided not to do it because it's so old. (not sure how old, but it's a white g3 with a cd tray). Anyway, i told him i should be able to do it. I've found directions online on ifixit and stuff but need a few more questions answered.
1. Will any 2.5 inch hard drive fit? I think i'm going for 5400 rpms because i don't want it to get too hot and he wants 80 gb. how is this one? [URL]
2. How will i run the os once it is installed? Do i need to installl 10.0 first and then move up? Can i install from the cd or do i need to do it from another computer via target disk mode?
3. ifixit suggests i get a "spudger" which i guess it a plastic anti static toothpic type thing to remove hard to get parts. Definitely needed or no? I have a set of small screw drivers that i've used for my powerbook that i thik should be fine.
4. Any tips at all you wanna throw at me.

my white macbooks hard drive broke along with my cd drive. I purchased a new hard drive and put it in but now I have no way to install Leopard since my cd drive is broke.I do understand the best way would be to buy an external CD drive and use that but I would rather not waste all that money on one use.I do have a firewire cable and my friend has a white macbook. I've heard that you can boot using another computer and use there cd drive via firewire by holding "T" or whatever.

I just thought I'd mention this for anyone who is thinking of using a Western Digital 1TB drive on your PPC Mac running 10.4. The MyBook Essential 1 TB external USB 2.0 drive is not compatible* out of the box with my Mac PPC G5 computer. If I plug it in, I get a message that the drive is not readable and an offer to initialize it. However when trying to partition the drive using Apple's Disk Utility (in 10.4), I get formatting error: Input/output error.
The solution is to download the WD Macintosh + Turbo Drive utility from Western Digital and install it on your PPC Mac. As previously mentioned, I have a G5, so while I assume this should work for any PPC Mac running 10.4.11, I don't know for sure. If you have an intel Mac there should be no issues with this drive requiring the utility to be installed. This hard drive worked as it should when it was first plugged into the MBP.

My newly acquired "ibook G4 1.33ghz 12 inch" is having problems booting just after recently insatlling a brand new WD Scorpio Blue 160GB hard-drive. I installed myself with the very useful [URL] tutorial which ran through the process quite simply. Basically the background story here is, I was given the ibook by a friend of mine who didn't want it as she didn't have the patience, money and time to invest into having it fixed. Some three years ago she dropped it from her coffee table and since then the hard-drive started failing, getting louder and slower to eventually one day not switching on at all. She took the ibook to an Apple Genius bar in LA where they ran diagnostics and resulted it with having a failed hard-drive.
She never had it repaired and has since been keeping it stored away as a spare. She was kind enough to gift it to me, I was well up for the challenge to repair it so here I am!! So, I bought a new hard-drive, successfully installed it and then the moment of truth, the ibook DID switch on, this itself was good news. But ever since I haven't been able to progress any further, as when I switch the ibook on it makes the apple start-up sound then goes to a white screen and says this:
Invalid memory access at SRR0: ff8486a4 SRR1: 00003030
Apple PowerBook6, 7 4.9.3f0 BootROM built on 07/05/05 at 11:14:11
Copyright etc.
Then says:
To continue booting, type "mac-boot" and press return
To shut down, type "shut-down" and press return
Reducing system power
So if I type "mac-boot" it goes to a grey screen with a folder icon in the middle containing a little 'finder' face and a flashing question mark, and then if left for about 5 minutes or so it just switches itself off. Of course it occurred to me that there is nothing on the new hard-drive so it can't boot from anything, I tried using my intel mac's start up disk which has OSX tiger on it, but this doesn't give any better results, I start-up holding C and I here the disk being read but it can't boot from it, it still goes back to the OpenFirmware screen as above.
