I've created a PDF with 15 Pages. I created the PDF using Pages and the document using "Page Layout" not "Word Processing". Since the document was created in Page Layout mode, I can not create anchors inside the document.Â
I'm wondering if this is possible after converting the doc to PDF and using the Preview application.
I've been trying to create a keyboard shortcut for Preview (and perhaps it would work in Safari) so that when I click command and arrow up, the cursor will jump to the top of the document. For example, I'm reading on page 450 of a pdf file and want to go back to the top I'd have to grab the tiny, tiny doodah on the right side of the page and drag it all the way up. In Windows (I do have two Macs and two Windows PCs) you click on control-up arrow and it happens. I tried to modify the keyboard shortcuts in Lion and it does let me do it, but it doesn't work.
I click on System Preferences, Keyboard, Keyboard Shortcuts, Application Shortcuts. It gives me a choice to add a shortcut by clicking on the plus sign, then I I select Preview and it gives me the choice to write the Menu Title (this is probably the problem) and I write gototop (go to the top of document) and then on Keyboard Shortcut I press command and the up arrow. But it doesn't work. Where do I find the Menu Titles for all programs?

I'm a medical student and as such I have to read a lot of PDFs in Preview. I usually read the text and highlight as I go to mark the important stuff. I was wondering if there's a way to create a new document composed of only the stuff I highlighted. That way I would have a great study guide and I wouldn't have to re-type all the content. So to summarize:
Copy highlighted sections ONLY and paste selections into a new document
One would think this would be dead easy, but no. I've got a PDF that I need to draw a double arrow on. Placing an arrow is easy, but what the heck does the drop down menu do in the tool box that shows an icon for lines with arrows in both directions or double arrow lines. If I have the double arrow line selected and chose an new line I get nadda. I have not been able to connect to the AppStore. My internet connection may be too slow or there is some other problem. The Apple helpdesk is less than helpful. They do not assist with connection problems. Result: No AppStore for me. So How do I upgrade to Lion? (The problem started when the Lion USB stick was not yet available)Â One possible solution is to buy a new MacBook. I may have to, because the one I am using is falling apart.Â
So, suppose I have this brand new MacBook and no connection to the AppStore. Is there a way to create a recovery DVD or USB stick from the new MacBook, without buying the official USB stick?Â
All articles about Lion recovery assume that you have an internet connection. I have news: not every internet connection counts as an internet connection as far as Apple is concerned. Funny thing is, that all updates to Leopard and Snow Leopard went without problems.Â

In Windows XP/Vista, if you are navigating in a folder containing pictures, and you click any picture, it opens up Windows built in preview program. Much like OSX. However, in Windows, you can click "Next/Previous" within that program to quickly flip through those photos. Why do the up & down arrows in OSX not work? I still prefer my iMac to any PC I have owned, but this one little thing bugs me to no end. Is there a setting I can change somewhere to make that work like in Windows?

Before buying a song in Amazon MP3, to preview, I click the little play button - it used to play in the browser... now it plays it in iTunes. Anyone know what the issue might be? I'm forced then to remove the link it adds to my iTunes library after every preview.

There are several discussions about how to stop Preview crashing in Lion but none work for me. However, if I create a new user, Preview is back to normal. There is also information from Apple on creating a root user, which some people have suggested as a solution but the steps shown for Lion are not replicated on my computer.Â
So- has anyone an idea why Preview works with one user and not another? how to create a root user? Â

I want to compress a PDF I have created. I've been told that in Preview, in the Print dialog box, in the PDF menu there is an option "Compress PDF." That option doesn't appear in my dropdown menu. It doesn't appear in that menu regardless of what program I'm selecting Print from. I have a new MacBook Pro I bought last August with the latest version of Lion. How do I get that compression feature to work on my system?

I'm using a 2011 Macbook Air running Lion 10.7.2.I open a group of photos using Preview. I right click one and select "open in new window". It opens. I decide to close said window by clicking the red X button. Nothing happens. I click the red X button of the main preview window with the pane of thumbnails on the side. It closes immediately. I click on the red X of the other window again. Still nothing. I go to Preview>Quit Preview. I get 10-20 seconds of pinwheel spinning. Finally, it closes.I've also noticed Lion hanging sometimes, especially when booting up.

I can't seem to merge PDFs in Preview 5.5.1. I've read that you simply open multiple PDFs in the thumbnail and then place one PDF on top of another, but when I try, the two PDFs just wiggle around and change order. If not preview - what program should I use?

I can't seem to find a way to close all windows in Preview.
Can somebody try this and see if they get the same result I do.
1. Copy an image into the clipboard.
2. Open Preview
3. Hold down command-N for about 20 seconds.Â
You should end up with dozens of windows with the image that you copied.
Now, try to close them.Â
I've unchecked 'Restore windows when quitting and re-openng apps' in System Preferences
I've typed in the 'defaults write com.apple.Preview NSQuitAlwaysKeepsWindows' hack in the terminal window
I've quit Preview with the 'option' button held down and 'Quit and Close All Windows' showing in the menu.Â
No matter what I do, the windows keep coming back every time I start Preview.Â
This 'force restore' feature of Lion is starting to get really annoying.

I must be missing something. I've read the instructions for merging pdf documents in Preview, but it's just not working. Wants me to "duplicate" a file or something. This seems very un-Mac-like. I get 2 documents open, drag the thumbnails from one into another, one at a time, and then try to "Save As".

Since updated to Lion I have found that Save As in Edit is no longer available. Screen shots and certain other images and docs I need to Save As jpegs in order to use in Photoshop. I cannot name docs form the drop down menu but instead have to close and rename it in the label on my desktop. The only option is Save a Version but when I do this I have no idea if and where the image is going as it does not show up on my desktop. Why is this feature of Save As removed? Some image files cannot be opened by PS unles in specific fomat and the word document issue is just annoying as it adds additonal steps to naming.
View 3 Replies View RelatedRecently, I have been having difficulty with Preview 5.5.2 freezing while scanning from an HP Officejet 6500. I have been using the same arrangement (iMac, HP Printer, internet connection, etc.) for about 5 months with no problems. I scan documents for archiving, but in the past week, or so, when I try to open the scanner (printer) within the Preview App (file-->Import From Scanner-->HP OfficeJet 6500) the import window pops open, but I cannot select scanning details. Usually, I would do this by clicking the "Overview" button. Now, when I click the "Overview" button, I get a blank import screen. Through reviewing the various online resources, I have done the following:Â
- Library (get info) - In the Library Info window (right click...get info) all the users are set to "Read & Write".Â
- Library (containers) - I trashed all the contents of the "com.apple.Preview" and "com.apple.TextEdit" folders within the "Containers" folder. Upon reboot, no noticable change, although the information in the folder was reloaded. Â
- Library (preferences) - Trashed the Preview preferences, rebooted, then tried to scan again. When I launched Preview, I was able to see the "Overview" details and select scan, but the scan froze on page 3 out of a 10 page doc. Â

Recently, whenever I open a PDF file with Preview, the file opens fine, but the app itself is unresponsive. I can use shortcuts (to close the program or window, or to open other files), but when I use a mouse or trackpad I am unable to click anything in the app, even the menu bar. I can scroll through the PDF documents, but I am unable to highlight text. I have all updates, and Preview is working fine if I switch to another user. I have tried to Repair Permissions, to add my user account to the Sharing and Permissions category under the finder, and I have tried deleting the preferences file in Library to no avail.Â

When I edit an image I have on my desktop with the Preview app and then save it, everything works fine.If I edit that same image with Photoshop CS6, save it (same or copy) on the desktop, and then try for example to resize or crop it with the Preview app, it won't work. It says it can't autosave because I don't have the right permissions or something like that... I already tried to repair them. I use the latest version of Lion. I also tried to do the same thing on Snow Leopard and it works fine.
